any of thetrucking profes-sionals I’ve beenspeaking withlately are opti-m i s t i c a b o u ttheir business. They tell me that the market challenges andcompetitive pressures of the past few yearshave reinforced the importance of loweringoperating costs – without sacrificing service.

As you know, asking customers toaccept rate increases is difficult even in thebest of times. So the question becomes howcan you protect your margin without rais-ing prices, yet continue to fulfill customerexpectations?

We believe Kenworth has the answer.Owning reliable, dependable trucks is prob-ably the single most important factor toconsider when it comes to lowering operat-ing costs. Reliability has a positive bottomline impact in two important ways. One is byreducing the costly downtime and repairsassociated with equipment breakdowns. Theother is seeing the payoff at resale.

For customers like Transport JulesSavard, whose T800s routinely carry 95,000pounds through mountainous terrain, boththey and their customers depend on Ken-worth reliability (page 10).“Our customershave very time-sensitive deliveries,” saysFleet Manager Guy Savard. “If our trucksweren’t dependable enough to meet theirdemands, they’d find someone whosetrucks could.”

We understand the importance of doingour part to hold down operating costs for ourcustomers. At Kenworth, that means strivingto provide you with the most efficient, reli-able, value-retentive vehicles available.

or a family that’s been in the trucking business foralmost as long as there have been trucks, theapproach to building a fleet at Ray Walker Trucking

in Piedmont, S.C., is wholly contemporary. The firm, which traces its roots back to 1924 when

M.A. Walker began hauling construction materials inKnoxville, Tenn., has been buying Kenworths exclusivelyfor the last two years. Most of these are Kenworth T800sin a tri-axle dump configuration for the local construc-tion projects which provide the firm most of its business. At about 60 trucks, the T800 now makes up a majority ofthe 100-truck Walker fleet. An additional 20 trucks areW900 tractors in day cab configurations for flatbed haulswithin a 250-mile radius.

Why Kenworth? For Mike Walker, the operations man-ager who represents the fourth generation of Walkers intrucking, that’s an easy question.

“Visibility out of the cab. Resale. Weight,” says Mike, whose father, Ray Jr., founded Ray Walker Trucking in1978 after 10 years of shuttling between projects in thePiedmont area and the Knoxville headquarters of hisfather’s company. At 78 years old, Ray Sr. remains activein the original Knoxville business, Walker TruckingContractors, Inc.

“We’ve run them all over the years, but Kenworth keepsa step ahead inthese areas, aswell as others.”

Visibility keyMike Walker assumed the duties of buying and spec-

ing trucks for Ray Walker Trucking about two years ago.Having spent some time in the driver’s seat himself, heknows both what will make a driver’s job easier and whatfeatures could have an impact on the need for fleet bodyrepairs. As a result, the sloped hood of the T800 becamea big selling point.

“We get in some pretty tight areas at housing sites andthat’s where visibility is such a big issue,” he says. “Youcan’t look right behind you in a dump, so the more youcan see in front of you, the better off you are.

“I also like the tapered bumpers on the fronts. I thinkthat has saved us fromtearing up a bumperor two at some ofthese sites.”

equipment resale. Ray, Jr., in fact, has been known to saythat every truck he owns is for sale, and he’s usually not kid-ding. But the fact is that most Walker trucks put in four tofive years of service before being sold, either to wholesalersor to individuals who know the T800’s reliability record.

“Kenworth is above average when it comes to resaleand I think part of that is that you don’t get the nit-picktype stuff going on with Kenworths after a few years,”says Mike Walker. “Whereas you might see wear prob-lems in other trucks of similar age, a Kenworth reallystays together, especially in the cab. Plus, it’s quiet in thecab. Other trucks don’t have the insulation in the cablike a Kenworth does.

“So if you spec these T800 dumps right, you’ll have atruck that is very attractive at a good price after four

or five years.”By spec’ing his T800s “right”,Walker is referring to packag-

ing necessary power incombination with weight-saving features as well as

heavy-duty features thatallow the T800 to per-

form efficiently andreliably in a severe

service applica-tion. To that end,he’s found thathe’s been able todownsize hiseng ine to a

430-horsepower Cat C-12 (Cat’s C13 engine, with its newACERT™ technology, will power future Walker T800s),gaining 800 pounds in payload. Other features, such asKenworth-standard aluminum crossmembers, Chalmerssuspensions and aluminum clutch housings, have pushedhis payload to nearly 24 tons.

Driver appealThe Ray Walker Trucking Kenworths, all painted a

highly visible bright red, also provide less tangible butequally important benefits. Washed regularly, the eye-catching T800s stand out among the vehicles typicallyfound on a construction site and appeal both to customersand drivers.

“We want to look good,” says Mike Walker. “Youknow, sometimes the only times a dump gets noticed iswhen somebody gets a cracked windshield from one,but I think having a good-looking fleet says somethingnot only to your customers but the community as well.

“Plus, this is a truck that can attracta better level of driver. We spec the Dia-mond interior. So the truck not onlylooks good, but has the power so thatwhen they hit a hill, they don’t have to bedigging through the gear box to climbit. That’s important to drivers.”

he typical municipal fire chief conducts a daily bal-ancing act that would make a gymnast shudder.

On the one hand are the duties of fire preven-tion and public safety. On the other are theadministrative tasks necessary in running a departmentthat is both highly functional and accountable in the eyesof the tax-paying public. Both can put a department’sfleet in a very scrutinizing light.

Fortunately for the community of Albany, Ga., theKenworth T300 is helping the fleet shine in that light.

“We have a very high local approval rating,” saysAlbany, Ga., Fire Chief James Arrowood. “These trucksplay a big part in that.”

Job oneWhile administration will take up the great majority

of a fire chief ’s time, job one is fire prevention. And inthat regard, the 14-truck fleet of the Albany Fire Depart-ment — nine of which are Pierce bodies fitted to 2001 or

newer Kenworth T300 chassis — is viewed in very quan-tifiable terms.

For example, the department’s goal for the 344-square-mile area it covers is a five-minute-or-lessresponse time for its first truck, with second and thirdtrucks reaching the scene within 12 minutes. Achievingthese goals contributes to another department goal ofcontaining a fire to its room of origin, which Arrowoodreports success at a 78 to 80 percent rate.

“We’re very proud of our record there,”says Arrowood.“That has a lot to do with theequipment we operate.”

But as a public employeewhose department is support-ed by tax dollars, Arrowoodmust answer to those payingthe bills, meaning the 75,000residents of Albany and anadditional 23,000 in the outly-

ing county. And that, at times, can be trickier thanputting out a fire.

After all, no one likes to hear the words “tax increase,”even if it means an upgrade in fire protection.

“Like a lot of other U.S. communities, our city budgetsare declining and we’re at the top of the limitations as tothe taxation our population can bear,” says Arrowood.

But a special tax referendum in 2001 brought relief tothe department, which was in need of both another fire sta-tion and an upgrade to the fleet, some of which had beenin service for more than 20 years. Not only was the age ofthe fleet an issue, but so too was its hodgepodge makeup.

“We would always buy a truck or two at a time and itwould always be a low-bid purchase,” says Arrowood.“And the spec would be written at the whim of whomev-er was in charge at the time. So we had a wide range ofvehicles — different engines, different front ends — andthat made matters extremely difficult from a maintenanceperspective as well.”

Once the referendum passed, establishing a tempo-rary 1% local sales tax that would generate $2.5 millionin money known as SPLOST (special local optional salestax) funds, Arrowood determined $1 million of it need-ed to be committed to fleet upgrades. He assembled acommittee to further determine how that money couldbest be spent.

“We picked a captain, a lieutenant, a driver and a reliefdriver, had them look at the best components and designa truck that fits the bill,” he says.“We saw this as the firststep toward fleet standardization.”

Commercial chassisWorking closely with Pierce, a noted fire body builder,

the Albany committee chose to look into customizing acommercial truck chassis instead of a custom fire chas-sis that had long been popular in the market. Kenworthengineers proved most willing to study the department’sneeds and customize the T300 to the department’s andPierce’s specifications.

But what provedto be thebiggest

benefit of the T300 was to the municipality’s bottomline. Originally planning on custom fire trucks thatwould cost about $250,000 complete, Arrowood bud-geted to get four trucks for his $1 million. Instead, his committee saw that the Kenworth chassis couldbe customized to a fire department’s needs and hegot five vehicles using the T300 chassis for $872,000.The only appreciable difference was that the Ken-worth design featured a 1,000-gallon water tankversus the 1,500-gallon tank available on the customchassis, but the 500-gallon difference was rarely nec-essary anyway, according to Arrowood.

“With the difference in savings I was able to buyother equipment, such as hose nozzles and positive-pressure ventilation equipment, not to mention anothertruck,” says Arrowood. “Then I was able to go back toour community and demonstrate how wisely we usedtheir dollars. That goes a long way in establishing pub-lic confidence.”

Popular with firefightersWhile Arrowood must remain sensitive to the con-

cerns of the populace, he also must answer to the needsand concerns of the department, which has more than180 members. He noted that the new T300s, spec’d witha Cummins ISC engine and a driver-friendly Allisonautomatic transmission, have received a high approvalrating from firefighters.

“They all like them,” says Arrowood. “There’s moreroom in the cab, they handle well, they have a short turn-ing radius and they have good get-up-and-go. Plus, if youstop hard at one intersection, you can have some confi-dence that you can stop hard at the next. That wasn’talways true with our other trucks.”

The trucks are also popular with the maintenancecrews who perform preventive maintenance on them.

“They all have the same parts, and they’re all readilyavailable,” says Arrowood. K

Few companies place premiums on truck depend-ability, driver appeal and performance likeTransport Jules Savard, Inc. of Jonquiere, Quebec.

Winter arrives early and stays late in this isolated cen-tral Quebec city, where the 30-year-old trucking firm’struck of choice is the Kenworth T800. Transport JulesSavard runs a fleet of 130 T800s, with a couple of W900sand T2000s thrown into the mix for specialized work.

The carrier’s heavy loads, difficult travel routes andits particularly acute need to appeal to drivers on mul-tiple levels bring out the best in the T800, according toGuy Savard, the fleet manager who is also the son ofcompany president and founder Jules Savard.

“Reliability, power and weight,” says Savard. “This iswhy we buy the T800. And with the AeroCab® sleeper,

we offer equipment that sets us apart from other com-panies. It is a reason we attract the best drivers.”

Double dutySavard’s T800s are often doing almost twice the work

of most of their U.S. counterparts. Hauling two-trailer“B-train”configurations, the T800s deliver about 95,000pounds of payload — mostly hot coils of aluminum thefirm transports from Quebec to their customers’ pro-duction facilities in the United States. The loads are oftentime-sensitive, given that they’re loaded hot; the coilsbecome more susceptible to water staining from con-densation as they cool, so timely delivery is important.

The production-to-loading schedule almost bringsnew meaning to the popular just-in-time turnaround

strategy, accord-ing to Ja cqu e sBrassard, TrafficManager for Alcan, one of Savard’slargest-volumecustomers.

“We produceand ship immedi-ately,” says Brassard. “This materialmust be at our production facility inIndiana within three days. We need atrucking partner with the personneland equipment to ensure it happensconsistently.”

Keeping a customer with suchneeds satisfied is compounded bythe difficulties of winter travel hereand by the fact that their majorroute runs some 100 miles througha mountainous, government-owned

wilderness locals refer to as “the park”.As a result, the T800’s performance record has become

a hugely important asset for Transport Jules Savard per-sonnel. Knowing that an ordinary truck might wilt in theface of such a dependability challenge, Guy Savard hasworked closely with Kenworth personnel to standardizea spec package that measures up to the task.

“We need good power in the ‘park,’” says Savard, whohas found a 430-hp Cat C-12 paired with a 10-speedtransmission and a 40,000-pound-rated rear axle pro-vide both sufficient hauling power in the hills whileremaining a weight-efficient combination.

“Weight is very important to us,”he adds, noting thatsuch specifications paired with the Kenworth T800 chas-sis engineered for maximum payload pay off in adifference of up to 3,000 pounds in payload over otherconventionals.

Driver appealBut as important as weight is the need to provide

equipment that helps retain and recruit quality drivers.Savard maintains a three-to-four-year trade cycle toensure his drivers operate like-new equipment and doesnot engage in slip-seating, thus allowing drivers to per-sonalize their rigs and their 72-inch AeroCab® sleepers.

Drivers are in high demand locally, a situation com-pounded by the fact that they must be conversant in bothEnglish and French — some estimates put the bilingualportion of the local population at just 10 percent.

“If I could find 50 more quality bilingual drivers I’dbuy 50 more trucks today,” says Savard. “Recruitingquality drivers is the greatest problem we face in theindustry, but running this equipment helps us keep theones we have.”

ISO Program BroughtFleet Into Focus

When Transport Jules Savard, Inc., com-mitted to ISO recertification in 2003,operations manager Christian Ricard foundboth similarities and differences from theoriginal ISO 9002 program they successfullycompleted in 1998.

“The first version was more productoriented, but this one was more manage-ment oriented. We had to evaluate every

part of our company infrastructure, and our fleet is certainly apart of that.”

After working with a consultant for a full year on the firstISO certification, Ricard alone spearheaded the recertificationprocess and completed it in four months. Recertification cast acritical eye on the fleet, he says.

“As a result of recertification, we worked closely with our Ken-worth dealership to develop conformity in our specifications,” saysRicard. “This streamlines our maintenance and buying processesand caused us to take a closer look at our needs and specifica-tions. For example, we found that we could shorten our wheelbaseand run a smaller, more efficient engine adapted to the size ofthe truck and still have the power we need for the loads we run.

“We first achieved ISO certification because our customers askedus to do so, but it’s paid off in operational efficiency for us as well.”

The Rewards of Loyalty

hen Jim and Bob Waller went shopping for newtrucks in 1986 after their company had spentdecades operating a mixed bag of pre-owned

vehicles, they made one point very clear to the peoplecourting their business.

They weren’t just buying a truck — they were begin-ning a relationship.

“We told the dealerships and the truck manufactur-ers that whatever we buy, we’re going to stick with it,”says Bob Waller, the presidentof family-run Waller TruckCo., the Excelsior Springs,Mo.-based truckload compa-ny his father Jack founded in1959.“We might change whatgoes into the truck, but thatemblem on the hood repre-sented the company that wewould go through the good times and the tough timeswith. We believed there would be rewards for that kindof loyalty.”

The Wallers’ 1986 shopping tripresulted in 10 Kenworth T600s, and theWallers have been true to their word eversince. The fleet is up to 231 trucks —about 175 of which are T600s withthe difference being made up ofT2000s and T800s — and morethan 700 trailers.

“That emblem hasn’t changed,”says Waller.“And our relationship with thepeople at Kenworth and our dealership isas good or better than it was that day wewere so excited to be getting our firstKenworth truck. We knew there weregoing to be some tough times and therewere. But when you partner with peo-ple like that you’ll get some help gettingthrough the peaks and valleys.”

Early changesWhile today’s peaks and valleys

include issues such as engine emissionmandates — which Waller met headon by integrating 30 pre-production

Cat ACERT™ engines into its fleet — some of the firm’smost challenging times came before they made thedecisions to commit to Kenworth trucks. In 1981, Jack, who had been passing responsibilities to his sons butwas still a guiding force in the company, passed awaysuddenly, leav-ing Jim andBob, both intheir mid-

20s and with little experience, at the head of the firm. Then came deregulation and the challenges it broughtan LTL carrier. It wasn’t long before the Waller broth-ers saw truckload as their future and by the mid-1980s,they discontinued their LTL operations.

“I think we were at the right age and had the rightamount of energy for the task at hand,” says Bob of thecompany’s evolution. “It was a tough transition.”

But if the Wallers recognized the potential rewardstheir loyalty to a truck supplier could bring, they also sawthat it was important that they developed similar rela-tionships with their own customers. To that end, according to Waller, they practiced a doctrine of fairness, honesty and quality service and as a result, three of theirpresent five top-volume customers have been with WallerTruck Co. since the 1970s and 1980s.

“We focus on long-term relationships with our cus-tomers and share the same goals,” says Waller. “Thesame way we buy our equipment, that’s how we wantto develop the loyalty of our own customers. That way

we both have something at stake, and we’re willing towork through each other’s ups and downs.

“But the bottom line is that our customers expectpremium service. That’s why we need premium qual-ity equipment and premium quality drivers andsupport personnel.”

Loyal driversNot surprisingly, the working environment at Waller

Truck Co. also breeds loyalty among drivers, whoseroutes typically carry them to Chicago, Denver andAtlanta with a payload ranging from Styrofoam® cups tobuilding materials. In fact, despite driver retention prob-lems that continue to plague the industry, Waller TruckCo. typically employs more drivers that it has trucks forthem to operate.

“We’re already providing them with a top-qualitytruck and an owner-operator spec. Plus we get themhome on weekends 90 percent of the time. I think oursuccess is mostly a matter of treating them the way wetreat our customers and the way we’d like to be treated— fairly and honestly.”

Rooted in relationshipIn the end, fairness and honesty has led to loyalty both

given and received, and that has served the Wallers well.As Bob Waller had predicted two decades prior, therewere some tough times, when resources got a little thinor a new technology needed additional tweaking to getthe equipment to peak performance. But with strongpartners, Waller Truck Co. has evolved into the $30 mil-lion-per-year firm that occupies a shining new 20,000square-foot facility.

“The Kenworth truck is what Waller Trucking is allabout and that’s quality and dependability. But at the rootof that is the relationship. That’s what makes this work.”

mpressive cargo deserves impressive transportation. This is the theory of Arne Hallin, an owner-opera-tor contracted to a Los Angeles-based manufacturer

of high-end exercise equipment.Arne and his wife, Linda, have delivered fitness

machines for six years, the last four with a 1999 Ken-worth W900L and custom-built, 53-foot Utility dry van.He says the color-coordinated tractor-trailer routinelyattracts attention and compliments both en route andat customer locations, which include hotels, universities, health clubs, corporate headquarters and private homes.

During a recent trip to New York City, the truckserved as a photo prop for tourists. “I was in thecab most of the day while the trailer was beingunloaded,” Linda says. “And every timeI looked up there were groups of peo-ple taking pictures of each otherstanding by the hood. I guess they werefrom other countries and had neverseen a truck like that.”

The interest is understandable. Thetractor, nearly always spotless, sports abroad Texas bumper, full rear fenders,Canadian style drive-axlespread, polished aluminumwheels, custom paint and awide assortment of chromeand stainless accentpieces (“safety devices,”Arne assures Linda). Thetrailer is equally deckedout and illuminated withnumerous LED lights.

Two names loom large on each side: Five Star Transport, which Hallin has named his operation, and Paramount, the maker of the fitness machines.

Hallin believes that his rig helps convey a positiveimage for Paramount. Company officials apparentlyagree because they feature it on the “about” page of theircorporate Web site (www.paramountfitness.com).

Trucking veteranAlthough he’s a relative newcomer to the fitness-

equipment business, Hallin is a seasoned truckingveteran. He started driving in 1954, the same year, coin-cidentally, that Paramount was founded. His first jobwas in Sand Point, Idaho, hauling lumber for a compa-ny that also employed his father. There, the two Hallinsbasically shared one truck, the younger filling in duringthe elder’s days off.

“I was only 16 at the time,”Hallin recalls.“But my dad’sboss told the insurance company that I would be drivingunder supervision. I don’t think that would fly today.”

This initial experience provided him with several ben-efits: decent pay, behind-the-wheel training (not availablein schools then) and an introduction to, and appreciationfor, Kenworth trucks. He began his career at the helmof a 1953 Kenworth High Mount.“Theywere pretty neat vehi-cles,” he says. “I stilllike theirdesign.”

Arne Hallin plans torun his KenworthW900L until heretires.“I started mycareer in a Kenworth,”he says.“It seemsfitting to end it in aKenworth.”

He also liked the early twin-stick transmissions, the5X3 and 5X4, and he continued to use the latter until 1978.

Advances in technology and equipment, of course, havea way of changing people’s minds. Thirty years ago, Hallinprobably would have laughed had someone predicted theway he trucks today.“In the old days, I always had a win-dow cracked open so I could hear the engine,”he says,“butnow we pretty much set the cruise, adjust the cab tem-perature, turn on the stereo and relax.” Thanks toKenworth’s SmartWheel®, most of those controls are justinches from his hands while he’s going down the road.

Owner-operator specsHallin has owned a number of trucks during the past

40 years, nearly all of them spec’ed for owner-operatorpride. His W900L, though, tops the bunch for comfortand performance. It’s powered by a Cummins Signature600 and geared through an Eaton Fuller 18-speed trans-mission and 46,000-pound drives. Inside, the cab hasleather interior, power windows and a complete gauge-and-switch package. The 86-inchStudio AeroCab®

sleeper holds a couch, television and refrigerator.Arne says he’s in no hurry to retire because he and

Linda thoroughly enjoy their occupation. “We’re pro-fessional tourists,” Linda says. “We always seem to havean extra day or two to do something fun.” Often, theyrent a car and explore some nearby destination or visitfriends or find a favorite restaurant.

Regardless of his retirement plans – or lack thereof– Hallin says he will keep the W900L until he stops

driving. “This is my last truck,” he says, “andit’s set up to go a million miles, which

is probably more than I’ll want torun it. I started my career in

a Kenworth. It seems fit-ting to end it in a

Kenworth.”

The perfect coupling...

For the past forty years, Jost fifthwheels have worked day in and dayout on the world’s most punishingroads, earning a reputation for highquality, safety, and durability.

Jost’s simple design means easy oper-ation, maintenance, and repair, makingJost the fifth wheel of choice aroundthe world.

Kenworth owners have already discov-ered this. With thousands of Jostwheels in service on Kenworthtrucks through aftermarket installa-tions, Jost has proven it can deliverthe high standard of quality set byKenworth’s nearly eighty years of inno-vation and superior performance.

With a fifth wheel designed for therequirements of North America,

Jost fifth wheels are now available fornew truck specifications at Kenworth.

There are two trains of thought: Buy based on lowestinitial price and hope for the best. Or, calculate the

total life cycle cost of the product and make an educateddecision. While the former philosophy may be good forcommodity items such as office supplies, evidence is over-whelming that for virtually everything else, it’s a must tolook at the long-term operating costs.

For Mifflintown, Pa.-based, Zimmerman Truck Lines, its strategy of buying with life cycle costs in mind is pay-ing dividends in its fleet of trucks. Recently the companyhas been purchasing Kenworth T600s with 72-inch Aero-Cab® sleepers in an effort to get more productivity and alower cost-per-mile as compared to its existing vehicles.

According to Ron Zimmerman, president of the com-pany which operates 215 trucks in van and flatbedoperations, the decision to move to Kenworth was a well-informed decision. “We analyzed information anddetermined that we could save conservatively $5,000 onup to $7,000 or more per truck with the Kenworthtrucks,” he said. “That calculation was based on sub-tracting the initial purchase price difference, andprojecting cost per mile and resale value as comparedapples-to-apples with our current fleet truck.”

Thus far, the numbers are on track, according to RalphSaner, Zimmerman’s vice president of maintenance.“Ourcost per mile is down with the Kenworths,” he said.“Andwe expect it to drop even further as our mechanicsbecome more familiar with the Kenworth product. What’smore, the Kenworths are easier to service. An example iswindshield replacement. The Kenworth windshield is eas-ier and faster to replace versus our other trucks.”

Fuel economy has also improved — Zimmerman’sT600s are averaging 6.2 miles-per-gallon with the CATbridge engines — a 3/10ths of a mile improvement overhis old fleet.

While Zimmerman and Saner are pleased with the“hard”life cycle costs, other softer numbers, not factoredin their original calculations, are making contributionsto Zimmerman’s bottom line.

“Our driver turnover rate has come down consider-ably,” said Zimmerman. “In these tougher times, we’reconcentrating on running the loads that are best for usand we want to keep our core drivers.”“And I think theKenworths play a part in this,” added Saner.“Drivers are

commenting about a better ride and how quiet the caband sleeper are. Since we run primarily teams in our vanoperation, a quiet running truck is important. I had onehusband and wife team comment that they used to havea hard time sleeping while the other was driving. Now,when they’re in the bunk, they don’t wake up.”

“That’s good for them, and it’s good for our company.”

Consider “Serviceability” Part of Life CycleCost Equation

In the race for profits, the fleets that keep theiroperational costs down themost typically win.

“Profit margins can beso thin that sometimes theonly way to make money isto run an efficient truckfleet. Controlling life cyclecosts is one of the fleetmanager’s most importantduties and vehicle service-ability plays a key role in that effort of keeping cost per mile low,” says JimBechtold, Kenworth chief engineer.

Operating trucks that are easy to service is often an underrated factor in striv-ing to lower life cycle costs. “Vehicle serviceability is often glossed over in the buyingdecision, and it shouldn’t be,” Bechtold says. “Every hour you save in servicing meansan hour more in productivity for your truck, and an hour less in maintenance costs. That’s why Kenworth designs serviceability into every truck it offers.”

Bechtold advises fleet managers to have their lead technician do a serviceabilitywalkaround on the truck they’re interested in purchasing.

“The electrical system is the most important from a serviceability aspect andone area to really analyze,” he says. Under the hood, Bechtold says some OEMslocate the engine in a doghouse in the firewall. “Kenworth, however, places theengine forward of the cab which gives the service technician more room to work.”

Bechtold says truck buyers must look beyond the initial purchase price. “It’s acombination of cost per mile which includes everything from maintenance andrepairs to resale value; driver retention; and serviceability of that vehicle. If thosethree buying criteria are followed, your bottom line can be vastly improved.”

Kenworth now offers selectedJost International fifth wheels

as published options on new Kenworth trucks.Jost fifth wheels have been previously available in the

aftermarket through participating Kenworth dealers inthe U.S. and Canada. Jost also has been the standardfifth wheel for years on trucks manufactured by DAF,PACCAR's European truck manufacturer.

"One key reason that fleets and owner-operators are

specifying the Jost fifth wheel is the safety and reliabilityof the locking mechanism," says Rich Carroll, Jost Inter-national vice president of sales and marketing. "Thecoupling design has some unique features that help indi-cate to the operator the Jost wheel is properly coupled. With only four moving parts, the Jost fifth wheel offersa positive locking mechanism, ease of operation andrequires less maintenance."

The wheel's cast ductile iron top plate features a cush-ion ring. The ring is designed to protect the wheel's

throat during coupling and reduces friction betweenthe top plate and trailer king pin, according to Car-

roll. In addition, the wheel can be rebuilt in less than30 minutes without having to remove the wheel from thetruck. This results in significant maintenance savings overthe vehicle's life as compared to older competitivedesigns. Jost fifth wheels also feature an easier-to-pullrelease bar.

Kenworth also offers a low-lube Jost model that isdesigned for mated tractor-trailer combinations, such asbeverage and tanker applications.

Montana owner-operator Doris Hansen has receivedmany safety and driving awards, but none bigger

than her most recent honor — American Trucking Asso-ciations (ATA) 2003 National Driver of the Year, the topprize among commercial drivers.

The owner of a Kenworth W900, Hansen has drivena truck for 36 years and traveled more than three mil-lion miles without an accident or a ticket. Over the years, she has driven both solo and as a team with her hus-

band, John, who taught her to drive a Class 8 vehicle.“I returned home from the Montana Motor Carriers

Association convention and found a letter telling me Iwon the national driver award,” says Doris Hansen. “Itwas a shock. I just couldn’t believe it and I still can’tbelieve it.”

Since her selection, Hansen has been busy attendingATA events in Jacksonville, Fla., and San Antonio, Texas.“I’m the first woman and the first driver from Montanato get this award and it’s quite an honor,” Hansen says.

The Hansens are driving their fifth Kenworth truck, this one equipped with a Cat C-12 engine and driventhrough an Eaton 15-speed transmission. “We knowKenworth trucks are durable and reliable,” she says.“Wedrive from coast to coast and need a truck that will haulour loads without fail. This is also a real comfortabletruck to drive. My husband likes the solid constructionand engineering features. We also like the W900’s clas-sic, traditional styling.”

The Hansens drive their Kenworth W900 solely forQuality Transportation Inc., a flatbed carrier that nomi-nated her for driver of the year in Montana. They haullumber, steel, pipe, feed and construction clay on a 48-foot flatbed trailer throughout the United States.

In the face of daunting driver turnover rates, MeltonTruck Lines Inc. has come up with an effective way to

keep its best drivers: the Tulsa, Okla., firm lets them speca new Kenworth truck.

Melton’s Ambassadors of the Road program, whichbegan in 1998, recognizes drivers who have driven onemillion safe miles for the company and are dedicatedand loyal to the carrier. Melton currently has 45 Ambas-sadors and has reduced its driver turnover rate thanksto the program.

Melton says “thank you”to these distinguished driversby allowing them to special order a Kenworth W900 orT600. A driver can choose from among nine exterior col-

ors and from a list of interior colors and can spec up to$1,500 in options, such as chrome, a refrigerator and alu-minum wheels.

When the University of Arizona needed tomove a huge mirror to a 10,480-foot moun-

tain top to begin building what will be the world’slargest, most powerful telescope, it chose heavy haulspecialist Precision Heavy Haul Inc. And when theTolleson, Ariz.-based company needed a powerfulyet nimble truck to pull the mirror up the moun-tain, it called upon a Kenworth T800 to do the job.

The recent project involved transporting a 27.5-footdiameter parabolic mirror and the mirror cell which sup-ports the mirror at the 16-story Mount GrahamInternational Observatory at Safford, Ariz. When com-pleted, the binocular telescope will be 10 times aspowerful as the Hubble Space Telescope.

“This was the most complex move with the most chal-lenges that we’ve ever had to overcome, but everythingwent exactly as planned,” says Michael Poppe, PrecisionHeavy Haul president. “This was an extraordinaryachievement between our team and our equipment.”

That equipment featured the Kenworth T800.“Thisjob shows why we have an all-Kenworth fleet of trucks.Kenworth builds the best custom-engineered heavy-duty trucks on the market and has always been there forus to provide superior product support,” Poppe said.“The combination of the biggest engine we could getplus the 195-inch wheelbase delivered the traction andthe tight turning radius we needed. This gave us greatmaneuverability for making those close-to-180-degreeturns climbing the mountain trail. Also, we needed aunit with a gear ratio low enough to go less than 1 mphwithout stalling.”

The $10 million mirror was hauled in a speciallydesigned steel box outfitted with 280 pneumatic actua-tors that restrained and cushioned it. Mirror and boxwere 30 feet square and 9 feet thick and weighed a com-bined 55 tons. The 29-foot diameter cell weighed 50 tonsand was moved separately.

Keeping an airport open can be challenging duringharsh winter weather. Yet, when the Washington,

D.C., area received one of its heaviest snow accumula-tions in its history with over 50 inches last winter,Washington Dulles International Airport in NorthernVirginia remained open.

Mark Philpott, the airport’s equipment programscoordinator, credited the Airport Equipment Mainte-nance Division’s staff and its fleet of trucks, includingKenworth T800 dump trucks, for meeting the chal-

lenge. The airport receivedthe American Associationof Airport Executives annu-al award for exemplarysnow removal.

The airport division’ssnow removal success result-

ed from scheduling the right vehicle for the right job.Following a program of smart spec’ing T800s, Philpottcredits features such as automatic transmissions and alu-minum and fiberglass cabs for their ability to endure therigors of winter.

“I wanted to specify the dump trucks for our severeapplication,” said Philpott. “They had to survive againstthe salt and, ideally, I’d like to see them last for 15 years. We don’t put many miles on them, but they have to bedurable and reliable.”

Miller TransferCalls onKenworth Reliability

Recently, Miller Transfer & Rigging Co. driver Roger Berg loaded a 27-footlong, 12-foot wide, 150,000-pound automotive press component onto one of the company’s 13-axle trailersat the manufacturer in Lansing, Mich. Pulled by a Kenworth T800, the load arrived a few days later in Lord-stown, Ohio, for installation in a giant press at the General Motors factory.

All in a few days’ work for Miller Transfer of Rootstown, Ohio. Since 1968, the company has specializedin hauling loads topping out at 325,000 pounds, serving customers nationwide and in Canada and Mexicothrough 19 terminal locations.

“If you’re a manufacturer needing to move heavy machinery, that’s what we do every day,” said JimUnger, Miller Transfer president. “Loads of 152,000 pounds, for example, are uneventful for us.”

Putting KenworthEngineering ExpertiseTo Good Use

When Pan Western Corp. needs extra muscle tohaul its massive loads of equipment for power

plants, the company calls on its Kenworth T800s.The North Las Vegas-based transportation company

recently hauled heavy machinery for the Arizona PublicService’s 570-megawatt Silver Hawk Power Plant in Apex,Nev. For the job, Pan Western hauled 25 loads, someweighing as much as 300 tons and stretching 87 feet.

“In heavy hauling, we need high capacity brakes, sus-pension and drive train to fit our severe service needs,”saysMike Porter,Pan Western’s heavy haul manager.“Kenworthhas always supplied the engineering know-how that fitsour application. With Kenworth, we have found that any-thing is possible in helping meet our requirements.”

T800s Boost Productivity forCarolina Sunrock

Bryan Pfohl and Graham Poole found ways to make their mixer fleetmore productive and easier for drivers to operate after working closelywith Kenworth, and the results are showing up on their bottom line.

Fifteen of 40-plus mixers at Pfohl’s company, Carolina Sunrock, aresturdy Kenworth T800s equipped with twin-steer axles. The company hasfound that their first twin-steer trucks can do more each working day, increasing productivity.

“On certain jobs, we can often make one more trip per day with theKenworth T800 twin-steer because of reduced round-trip times,” saidPoole, vice president for the Raleigh-Durham, N.C. company. “Our produc-tivity is also up because we have less downtime for maintenance. In ourfirst year of owning these Kenworths, our maintenance costs were muchless than our other trucks. The twin-steer trucks will pay for themselvesmuch quicker than the others.”

Extended Day Cab during a special ceremony at the company’s Ren-ton, Wash. plant.

The new Kenworth Extended Day Cab is one of the largest day cabs onthe market. It runs six inches longer and the roof is raised five inches overthe company’s traditional day cab. The result is a very spacious cab withmore head and leg room and 21 degrees of recline in the driver’s seat.

“While several more inchesof leg space might not seem likea lot, to a driver it’s huge,” saidGary L. Moore, Kenworth assis-tant general manager for salesand marketing.“To put it anoth-er way, wouldn’t you rather havethe leg room first class offers ver-sus what’s available in coach?”

Kenworth sent an ExtendedDay Cab prototype on an exten-sive roadshow to gather fleet anddriver feedback during visits tocustomers, dealer events, andindustry trade shows. “Driverswere excited about the addition-al space and roominess whilefleets think the Extended DayCab will help in driver retentionwhile still maintaining a light-weight vehicle for productivitypurposes,” Moore said.

Steve Garland always had trouble fitting his 6-foot-4-inch body comfortably behind the wheel of any

truck he drove. But after taking delivery of his newKenworth T800 Extended Day Cab, the logger fromGrande Prairie, Alberta, is finally comfortable.

Garland recently became the first vocational cus-tomer in Canada to take delivery of Kenworth’s newExtended Day Cab.“My legs were too cramped in thesmaller cab of the previous (non-Kenworth) truck Ihad — even with the seat pushed all the way back,”Garland says. “My head was hitting the roof and Ideveloped hip problems thatrequired physical therapy. It wasnot very comfortable spending12 hours a day or more in thatother cab.”

Kenworth’s new ExtendedDay Cab is six inches longer thanits traditional day cab and pro-vides an additional five inches ofheadroom. The Extended DayCab also offers more roombehind the wheel and a seat thatreclines 21 degrees for addedcomfort. “The KenworthExtended Day Cab is muchroomier,” Garland says. “I haveconsiderably more head and legroom. My nephew is my otherdriver. He’s 6-foot-1 so he appre-ciates the added room as well.

“An added benefit is the threestorage compartments acrossthe back behind the seat. Theycome in handy to store paper-work and supplies,” Garlandsays. The cab’s side visibility isalso improved from his priortrucks thanks to Kenworth’sDayLite® door.

Garland says he realized adream when he bought his newKenworth T800 with ExtendedDay Cab. “This Kenworth is theideal truck,” he says. “It has thebest resale value, which I willrealize in five years or so when Iam ready to sell. It’s a great valueon the front end and even moreso when I sell it. Plus, it’s puttogether for reliability.”

When the founders of Apollo Express Inc. werelooking to launch their business four years ago,

they couldn’t afford a new truck. So they turned to thenext best thing — a used 1995 Kenworth T600 with morethan 592,000 miles. The Kenworth truck has served thegrowing Jackson, Mich., business well since then, rollingover a million miles and still going strong.

“Our drivers love that Kenworth,” says Tom Cooke,Apollo vice president.“You’d be hard-pressed to tell thattruck from one that has one-third the miles. The paint isbright, the aluminum is shiny and the whole truck istight. Its fuel mileage is as good as or better than our othertrucks and it requires little maintenance. The only majorthing we’ve done to it is put in a bigger engine.

“We rely on that Kenworth T600 to haul auto partsto and from the auto plants and their suppliers through-out the U.S., and the truck has delivered for us from thefirst day,”Cooke adds.“We’ll probably drive it for at leastanother year.”

The outstanding performance of its million-mile Ken-worth, combined with the dedicated support fromMichigan Kenworth in Grand Rapids, Mich., has con-vinced Apollo to increase its reliance on Kenworth.Apollo has expanded to 15 Kenworth tractors andstraight trucks and plans to buy two tractors and twonew trucks in 2004.

Reliable T600 Passes One Million Miles,Delivers Dependability for Apollo Express

New Hours of Service Rules PutPremium on Kenworth Reliability

With new Hours of Service rules now implemented, a reliable, quality truck with dependable uptime is more important than ever, according to Jim Bechtold, Kenworth’s chief engineer.

“Under the new HOS rules, the clock starts ticking as soon asdrivers go on-duty and continues counting up to 14 hours, whetherthey are driving or waiting at the loading dock,” Bechtold says. “Thiswill put more pressure on drivers and their equipment to make on-time deliveries. Deliveries and unloading will need to be scheduleddown to the minute, so if a driver shows up late, it will cost every-one money.

“That’s why running a reliable truck is so important — it willhelp maximize uptime and productivity and minimize unexpectedrepairs. And for those who want to make a profit, it’s simply thesmart way to go.”

Bechtold feels Kenworth is ahead of the curve thanks to thecompany’s history of paying attention to the smallest of details tomake a better, more reliable truck.

“Engineering for reliability is a philosophy that filters down fromthe very top at Kenworth, to the people who actually assemble thetruck,” says Bechtold. “Our design engineers not only work on newproducts, but on ways to make existing products more productiveand reliable. With the resources we have at Kenworth and PACCAR,we have the ability to make those changes.”

Another critical impact on quality and reliability at Kenworth hasbeen PACCAR’s Six Sigma quality program that has been in placesince 1998. “It’s allowed us to make a great truck even better andadd to Kenworth’s high resale values,” notes Bechtold. “As an exam-ple, one of our first projects was to improve the torque control ona single critical joint. The project identified a number of variablesthat impacted clamp loadand it allowed our engineersto design a better mouse-trap. This was a project, likemany others, that our cus-tomers would never knowabout. It’s how we’re payingattention to even the littlestdetails to make our trucksthe ‘World’s Best.’”

Vocational truck operators recently tested thenewest Kenworth trucks equipped with the latest

The Kenworth-sponsored event attracted more than 130customers at two locations:Kenworth’s Chillicothe,Ohio,man-ufacturing plant and Caterpillar’s6,000-acre Tinaja Hills provinggrounds facility near Tucson, Ariz.

“We enjoy meeting with ourvocational truck customers andprospects to discuss and show thedurability, reliability and engi-neering features of our Kenworthtrucks,” said Gary L. Moore, assis-tant general manager of sales andmarketing. “It’s a great setting forvocational users to try out ourrugged truck models as well as anopportunity for us to listen tovocational operators.”

Steve Delfino, transportationmanager of Quikrete in Fremont,Calif., says he attended theArizona show to compare theKenworth T800 with a competi-tor’s truck. “The Kenworth wasfar superior,” he says. “The ridewas more comfortable, and thetruck maneuvered better andmade sharper turns.”

Manager Brad Wicks ofHoosier Hauling in Indianapolislikes what he saw in Kenworth’sT800 tri-axle dumps. “They ratehighly for their driver comfort fea-tures and their maneuverability indelivering materials to all kinds ofconstruction sites,” he says.

Chillicothe visitor Norm Ger-stenslager intends to buy anotherT800 for his fleet of six tractors inUniontown, Ohio. “I like thetransmission, the suspension andthe steer axles we need in comply-ing with ‘bridge laws’ in Ohio,”Gerstenslager says. “We need theversatility the T800 provides.”
