I used to sell alarms door-to-door. We would have a daily team meeting at 1:00 p.m. and hit the road at 2:00 p.m. to start knocking on doors. On one particular day, I was pretty down and didn’t feel like being at work. I just wasn’t in the swing of things, and work was the last thing on my mind. As I was about to leave our sales van, my friend said, “Kevin, come here. I want to show you something.” He wrote out on a piece of paper: “A . T . T . I . T . U . D . E.” Unenthused, I just shrugged and said, “Yeah, it says attitude, so what?”

He placed his hand on my left shoulder, looked me in the eye, and said, “I want you to leave now, but before you knock on your first door, replace every letter in attitude with the num-ber in its alphabetical position (for example, A=1, T=20). Once you have done that, add all the numbers together. In-stead of leaving and working it out in my head, I went to the back of the sales van, got my pen, and started to work it out right then and there. A=1, T=20, T=20, I=9, T=20, U=21, D=5, E=4 1+20+20+9+20+21+5+4=100

Guess what - the numbers added up to 100! I looked up and said, “one hundred.” He then said, “That’s how important your attitude is.” A 100 percent attitude was important if I was going to spend my day working. He said that I was wast-ing my time being there if I wasn’t going to have a 100 per-cent attitude. Today I look back and thank him for that great piece of advice. A powerful secret weapon had just landed in my lap.

With what attitude are you playing the game of your life? Are you a can’t-do-this and can’t-do-that person? Or are you someone who looks at all stumbling blocks and asks, “How can I overcome this, one way or another?” Do you see the cup half full or half empty? Or maybe you are a person who will grab a jug of water, fill up the cup, and say, “Now it’s a full cup.”

Do you look at a situation and say, “How can I make it work?” Or do you just decide, “We have a problem, and I can’t do much about it”? Do you take control? Or do you give up? Can you look up in to the sky - when you are facing down? Your attitude will determine your altitude in life. If you are com-ing from an attitude of negativity, the direction you will see is down. If you were to only look at one side of the coin, does that mean the other side doesn’t exist? Of course not. You may simply be choosing not to look at the other side. Suc-cessful people who win the game of life have acquired and mastered a how-can-I-do-it Attitude.

Virgil said, “They can because they think they can.” Do the fishes stop swimming simply because the water con-ditions get rough? Do they stop swimming because people are fishing? Do professional athletes stop playing their game because they are not ahead of their game in the first half? Does a mother give up on a child simply because her little one is slow to walk? All successful people see through the tough times in order to win their game of life. They are always ask-ing, “How can I do it?” So, how can you do it?Most people think about what they can’t do all the time. If you keep on doing that, you will end up being like the major-ity of people. Doing what the majority does will result in you

having what the majority has. Do you want what most people have? I’ve spoken with thousands of successful people, and they’ve all said that, in many instances, they had no idea how they were going to win their game but didn’t let that hold them down. They just knew that they were playing to win, and they’d figure out the “how-to” along the way. Most peo-ple spend most of their time worrying about how they won’t be able to succeed. You give a recommendation to help them with their challenge, and they are quick to reply with con-cerns as to how and why they can’t do it, rather than thinking, “How can I do it? How can I make it happen?’

So You start a project—launching a new business, learning to play a musical instrument, playing a sport, or getting a de-gree, to name a few. You are all excited at first, but then you come across a stumbling block. You get annoyed, then frus-trated, then depressed, and then you give up. What have you achieved? Nothing. Should you receive a medal for it? There will always be challenges in life, so you’d better start think-ing about how they can be smartly overcome or used in your favor. By asking, how can I do it, you are orientated toward finding a solution rather than focusing on the problem. Don’t play victim; be a victor. Choose to be a winner. It’s not what happens to you that matters; rather, what you do when things happen is what’s important. Do you think that a winner might have a different attitude when confront-ed with situations than those who don’t make it? Absolutely.

To be a winner, you must first have a winner’s how-can-I-do-it attitude. Most people say that, when things get better, their attitude will change. I am here to tell you that, until you acquire and master the powerful weapon that is a how-can-I-do-it attitude, things will be the same. The change needs to come from you first. Make the move. Start instilling and practicing a winning attitude, and you will start to win the game of life. As long as you always get up one time more than you fall, you will still be standing, won’t you? You don’t have a chance of winning if you remain on your back. Can you win a boxing match with your back on the mat? The only way to win is to get back up again and stand another chance. So if you have been lying down from a previous hit, use what you are reading right now and choose to stand up. Stand up and smile at adversities because you owe it to yourself to live a full life. You want to be able to look back and be proud of the 100 percent attitude that led to you living a full 100 percent life.

The only way to win is to ask, “How can I do this? How can I land my K.O?”
