FANRPAN Origins and legitimacy

Origins

• Call by Ministers of Agriculture and Environment in Eastern and Southern Africa in 1994

• Created in 1997, and registered in 2003 in Zimbabwe

• FANRPAN secretariat accredited with diplomatic status by the Government of the Republic of South Africa in 2005

Legitimacy and convening power

• FANRPAN has convening power at national and regional levels

• Membership and stakeholder categories- governments, private sectors, research institutions, women’s organisations, youth organisations, farmer organisations and other civil society bodies.

Vision: A food secure Africa free from hunger and poverty

Mission: To promote effective Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources (FANR) policies by • facilitating linkages and partnerships between government

and civil society, • building the capacity for policy analysis and policy

dialogue in southern Africa, and • supporting demand-driven policy research and analysis

Mandate: An Africa-wide with presence in 17 African countries Angola, Benin, Botswana, DRC, Kenya, Lesotho, Namibia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.



2008: The Beginning

• FANRPAN/COMESA partnership was launched at the UNFCCC CoP 14: Poznan, Poland as part of the Agriculture, Forestry and Land Use (AFOLU) initiative.

• International Food Policy Re-search Institute (IFPRI)/ FANRPAN partnership undertook the Assessment of the Vulnerability of Agriculture to Climate Change in 7 Southern African countries.

• FANRPAN/Rockefeller Foundation established climate change food security policy dialogue platforms in East Africa

• Co-convened the Agricultural Rural Development Days (ARDD) in partner-ship with European Global Donor Platform.

• UNFCCC CoP 15: Copenhagen, Denmark

– With support from the Norwegian Government launched the "No Agriculture No Deal" Campaign

– Reached 5,000 people with "No Agriculture No Deal" Campaign Messages

• Windhoek, Namibia: Hosted the 2010 FANRPAN Regional Policy Dialogue on livestock and fisheries in a changing climate

• Nairobi, Kenya: Participated and delivered a paper at the Climate Change Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) Launch Conference

• Venice, Italy: Issued a statement during the Climate Change Policy Dialogue on a Shared Action Framework for Agriculture, Food Security and Climate Change in Africa

• UNFCCC CoP 16 : Cancun, Mexico – 6 number of engagements (facilitated, presented and/or panellist)

– 15 Journalists trained on Climate Change responsive reporting
