Luke 23:1-2

1 And the whole multitude of them arose, and led him unto Pilate. 2 And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ a King.

New Allegations

The delegation knew that Pilate would not crucify Yeshua for a religious taboo and they saw that their attempt to keep the charges general and ambiguous had failed. They quickly offered three additional specific charges.

1. Sedition 2. Tax Evasion3. Revolution

Luke 23:3-4

3 And Pilate asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answered him and said, Thou sayest it. 4

Then said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people, I find no fault in this man.

Innocent Blood

Six witnesses affirmed His innocence:

1. Judas (Matthew 27:4) 2. Pilate's wife (Matthew 27:19) 3. Pilate (Matthew 27:24) 4. Herod (Luke 23:15) 5. Criminal (Luke 23:41) 6. Centurion (Luke 23:47)

Luke 23:5-7

5 And they were the more fierce, saying, He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee to this place. 6 When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked whether the man were a Galilaean. 7 And as soon as he knew that he belonged unto Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who himself also was at Jerusalem at that time.

Luke 23:8-98 And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him. 9 Then he questioned with him in many words; but he answered him nothing.

The Sceptre Departed

• When the members of the Sanhedrin found themselves deprived of their right over life and death, they covered their heads with ashes and their bodies with sackcloth, and bemoaned.

- “Woe unto us for the scepter has departed from Judah and the Messiah has not come!”

18 Judges and officers shalt thou make thee in all thy gates, which the LORD thy God giveth thee, throughout thy tribes: and they shall judge the people with just judgment. 19 Thou shalt not wrest judgment; thou shalt not respect persons, neither take a gift: for a gift doth blind the eyes of the wise, and pervert the words of the righteous.

Christian preachers and teachers like to contrast the chants of the crowd with their acclamations at the triumphal entry. They point out the fickle disloyalty of “the Jews”.

The people who welcomed Yeshua to Jerusalem with palms and acclamations were not the same people gathered around Pilate’s tribunal at 8 AM on Passover Eve.

Isaiah 50:4-6
