GrannyPatCampOn Sunday we went to Granny Pat and

Gramps house to spend the week. Emma,Joel, andEvelyn that is. Andrew is not old

enough yet. The nextday,Monday,Morgancame. Wepaintedandrodebikesandeven

sleptoutonthescreened-inporch!

On Tuesday we went to Krispy Kreme for

breakfast. Then we went to the park and

hikedupthemountain.Afterthatweplayedinthe riverandgot a littlewet! Thenafterlunch and rest-time, we had a big puffy

pretzelforsnack!Afteroursnackweplayed

a lot,haddinner,caught lightningbugs, andwenttobed.Thatwasafunday!

OnWednesday,wewenttoGlennasandthen

went to Randys. We swam allmorning inRandys pool. We went back to Glennas

houseafterthepoolandhadlunchandrest-time.Wehadafunday!

On Thursday we went to Granny Pat and

Grampschurch toseewhereMomandDadgotmarried.Thenwewenttotheduckpond

to feed theducksandthe fish. Wewent tothebigstaronthemountainafterthat.Then

wecamehomeanddidtheusualnoonthings.

Then we went to see Cars 2 in the movietheater.Thatwasanotherfunday!

On Friday we just hung around the house

playing and getting ready for whenAunt Jo

andourparentscame.Whenwewereriding

ourbikesEmmafelloffhersandscrapedup

her leg plus both her elbows and hit hermouth! Itwasquitea fall! ThenMomand

Dadcameandwehadpizzafordinner.

Thenextdaywehadagoodtimecatchingup

with our family members. A little laterweplayedonthewater slide. Andrewloved it!

(ThiswaswhenhehadcomewithourMomandDad.)Fordinnerwehadacook-outwith

the Behrens, Granny Pat and Gramps

neighbors. After that Emma, Joel, MorganandEvelynwentwithDadandAuntJotothe

SalemFair.Itwasreallyfun!Dadwonaprize

andsplit it into 4 little prizes so each of uscouldhaveone!Wealsosawtheracingpigs!

BalletRecitalsOn June 25th Emma and Evelyn had ballet

recitals. Emmas dance was called, TheDance Over the Rainbow. Evelyns dance

wascalledASpoonfulofSugar.Weliketocall Evelyns dress The Pink Poof. Thename that came with Emmas was The

SecretGarden.Therecitalswentreallywell!

July4thOnthe4thofJuly,wewentblueberrypicking.Granny Pat and Gramps gave us a bag of

poppers and fireworks to use, so we used

someofthose. Thensomeofuswenttoseebiggerfireworks.Itwasagreatday!

OtherHappeningsAndrewgotabigboybed!Evelyn,whowassleepinginabunkbedwithJoel,movedinto

Andrewsoldroom.AndrewmovedintothebunkbedwithJoel.Helovesit!

This book is about a fourteen year old girlnamedMiri.ShelivesonMountEskelwhere

they work in the quarry to get blocks oflinder.Miriisverysmallforherage,andher

fatherwontletherworkinthequarrybeside

him and her sister Marda. She sits on thehillside watching the quarry workers work.

She doesnt understand why her fatherdoesntletherworkinthequarrytoo.

Peder, her friend, tries to tell her aboutquarryspeech.Apparently,whentheperson

working next to you is pounding too hard,

you sort ofsing inyourheadand the otherpersonshouldfeelasensationandhearinhis

ownhead,Lightentheblow.OfcourseMiridoes not know how to use quarry speech

becauseshedoesntworkinthequarry.

Thenonedaywhenthetraderscametotrade

thingswiththequarryworkers,therecamea

fancycarriage. In this carriage therewas amessenger from the palace in the lowlands.

Hesaid,PeopleofMountEskel,thekinghassaidthatoneofthegirlsinyourvillage,12to

16shallcometothelowlandsandgotothe

princessacademy.Thereyourgirlswilllearnto be young ladies and one of them will

becomeaprincess.Oursoldierswillbeheretomorrowtoleadthegirlstotheiracademy.

Pleasebereadyfortheirarrival.Mirididnot

wanttogotothisacademy.Os,amemberoftheMountEskel community, said, We cant

spareourgirlstothisacademyofyours.We

needthemheretoworkinthequarry.Theywillhavetostayhere.Butthenextdaysure

enough,thesoldierscameandtookthegirls

away.

MirithoughtthatherPafeltashamedofherfor being sosmall. Thatswhy hedidnt let

herworkinthequarry.Onthewaythereshe

caught up with Esa andFrid. They didnotwanttogototheacademyeither.Whenthey

got there a women stepped out of the

building.Theyfollowedherinsidewheresheshowed them the rooms where they were

staying.ShesaidhernamewasTutorOlana.Shewasmeantothem.Shelockedthemin

the closet, slapped their hands, and made

themcleantheacademy.Miristillworkedonherquarryspeech.Itevenletthemrunaway

onetime!

There was also a girl who lived in the

mountain with all the girls, but was alowlander. Her name was Britta. Miri

became friendswith Britta. One day Olana

told them that one of them would beacademyprincess. That the princess might

notbethegirlwhogetschosentobetherealprincess, but the girl who does best in her

studies.Sothegirlsgottoworkgettingready

for the ball where they would meet theprince. They practiced poise and

conversation.Miristudiedhardandhopedto

becomethe princess. But she keptthinkingabout Peder. Finally came the day where

theytookthefinaltesttoseewhowouldgettobetheacademyprincess.Olanasaid,after

the test had been made, that Miri, Katar,

Bena, and Liana, were the only girls whopassedthetest.Soshelettheremaininggirls

vote. Miri won! She was the academyprincess! She got to see the dress that she

would get to wear to the ball. It was

beautiful!

totheball. Theprincewasnotverycheery.

Hedidnttakemuchinterestinanyofthem.Infact,hesaidhewouldcomebackanother

timeanddecidethen!Sothegirlswentbackupthemountain. Whileshewasthere,Miri

saw Marda helping some boys with the

linder. It fell on her andMarda broke herarm!Miribegantocry.Then,Doter,EsasMa

cameuptoMiri. She toldDoterabout how

herPawas ashamedof her. Doter told herthat her mom had once gotten hurt while

workinginthequarryandthatwaswhyshedidnt get to work in the quarry. Miri felt

betterafterthat.

They went back to the academy for more

lessons. Thenone day,banditscame to the

academy!Thegirlsdidalltheycouldtogetthemaway,theyeventriedtorunaway,but

nothing worked. Miri surprised herselfbecause she used quarry speech and the

parents of the girls came and scared of the

bandits.SowhentheprincecamehechoseBritta for the princess. Miri lived happily

everafterwithherfamily.Ilikedthisbookbecauseithaslotsofactionanddrama.
