How does the cinematography positively or negatively affect your opinion of this film? In the beginning, the dark, the fog, and the steam from their breath add to the boys desperation and reality of being lost. In the hospital, it is stale and clean, the lighting shows the changes David is undergoing and his preference to the dark over the day light. The imagery of the werewolf in Pica deli circle was crucial in setting up the tone of how overwhelmed David was with dealing with his new ordeal. All of the cinematography in this film added to the enjoyment and positive opinion of this film. 2. How does the mise-en-scéne (visual theme) affect your perception of the film? The film opens with the desolate country side in London; we get a clear picture that they are two students backpacking, they are warned to “stick to the mores”, and the setting is created for what is to come. Once the film moves back to London the imagery is livelier and shows a busy city, what I would think London is like. I enjoy when Jack comes to visit David that each time he is more and more decayed and nasty. During David’s rampage on London seeing a couple in their modern English home, the London Bridge in the background, the attack in the London underground all add to the feeling of the wolf roaming around London. The visual usage of the landscape adds to my enjoyment of the visual theme of the film. 3. How does the use of sound affect your perception of the film? Wind blowing over the mores, a clock the only sound in a quite pub give both give a feeling of desolate isolation. The movement of the wolf around Jack and David in the mores gives a true feeling of being followed and adds to the drama of them being scared. During David’s change in the full moon the sound effects of his bones changing, hair growing, and his skin stretching ads to the legitimacy of the change.

An American Werewolf in London (1981)

All use of the sound affects left a positive impact on my perception of the film.

4. How does the use of music affect your perception of the film?

The film opens with “Blue Moon”, kind of a nod to what is to come. During the scene where Jack tells David he was attacked by a werewolf the music is mystic and haunting. In London “Moon Dance” plays, another nod to what is coming. “Bad Moon Rising” plays during the day before David changes. “Blue Moon” is what plays when he goes through the transformation to wolf. The music in this film is comical, enjoyable, and very fitting.

5. How does the editing of the film affect your perception of the film?

The editing of the film was done very well to show the special effects. When Jack is first attacked the repeated cutting away during the mauling provided a way for additional blood, and other damages to be done. The dream sequences before the full moon offer a good transition of the changes taking place in David. The editing during David’s change to wolf is done very well, there are few shots of cutting away and with no CG it had to be stop motion filming. The editing of the film left a positive feeling of enjoyment in the film.
