FROM THE PASTOR
On Being Content Once a rich industrialist, disturbed to find a fisherman sitting idly by his boat, asked, “Why aren’t you out there fishing?” “Because I’ve caught enough fish for today,” was the reply. “Why don’t you catch more fish than you need?”
asked the rich man. “What would I do with them?” “You could earn more money and buy a better boat so you could go deeper and catch more fish. You could purchase nylon nets, catch even more fish, and make more money. Soon you’d have a fleet of boats and be rich like me.” “Then what would I do?” asked the fisherman. “You could sit down and enjoy life.” “What do you think I’m doing now?” the fisherman replied. Someone once said: • Discontentment keeps a person from enjoying what he or she possesses. A drop or two of vinegar will sour a whole glass of wine – Thomas Watson • A little sprig of the herb called contentment put into the poorest soup will make it taste as rich as the Lord Mayor’s exquisite dish – Charles Spurgeon Contentment is realizing that God has already provided everything we need for our present happiness – Bill Gothard In this busy time of returning to school and work schedules – vacation time but a distant (and hopefully!) good memory…it would be well for us to remember that we are always called on to do our best and strive to be better – but we are NOT to be discontent with our present situation. God is here to help us be the best that we can be…but also to remind us that He provides for all our needs right here…right now. As Jesus reminds us: “Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these” St. Matthew 6:28-29. Enjoy your autumn…and may we look to God for all we need! Peace and love, Pastor John

The word "ultreya" is a Spanish word that means to persevere upward. This word is
used by Via de Cristo for a gathering of those that have attended a weekend. It is at these
meetings that we challenge each other to "keep going" on in our journey for a deper
relationship with Jesus Christ and our service to Him. There will be an Ultreya on
September 30th at Kimball. It is an open event for all. If you have not attended a VdC
weekend and would like to know more, please plan to attend. If you have attended a
weekend, come and get renewed with that Spirit. This will be a covered dish event,
starting at 11:30am. Lunch will be served first followed by a short program and worship with
communion. Come and see!

2018 ELCA Youth Gathering Houston, TX June 27th-July 1st, 2018
Devotion by Landon Ridgell published in the ELCA Yo uth Gathering ENEWS! An article published in Detroit during the 2015 ELCA Youth Gathering described how the “Skittles” were taking over the city. This was referring to the several thousand youth and adults in Hart Plaza wearing bright orange shirts. But these weren’t just any old Skittles that when they get hot their color stains your hands or they get hard to bite into. These Skittles only got better with time. On my service day, I was on one of the busses that went around to the hotels that people were staying in and collected diapers. It definitely didn’t seem or feel like a service project considering there were other people that had their orange shirt covered in dirt. Once we got to the place where all the diapers were to be dropped off, we saw the impact we had made – an entire gym full of diapers and wipes. So many families were helped by us just riding around and all of the people who brought diapers with them. The ELCA Skittles don’t make stains; we try our best to get rid of the previous ones, even though it may not seem like it at
times. We are all moving toward that common goal. I am one of the lucky few that will get to attend two Gatherings. Detroit was an experience I will never forget, and I can’t wait to see what Houston has to offer next year. – Landon Ridgell, North Carolina
