It would be hard not to be inspired after hearing Thornhill native Paul “Rosey” Rosen speak.

The former goalie for the Cana-dian Paralympics Sled Hockey team, Rosen, 55, told his personal story of triumph and determina-tion to a gymnasium full of stu-dents in King City Tuesday morn-ing.

Holy Name Catholic Elemen-tary pupils from grades 4 to 8 were treated to about an hour of Rosen’s wit and wisdom as the four-time Paralympian – he participated in the 2002, 2006 and 2010 Winter Paralympics and 2007 Summer Paralympics – held the room in thrall.

Winner of a gold in Turin in 2006 in sled hockey and a bronze in 2007 in Rio de Janeiro in sit-ting volleyball, Rosen has a unique story.

He turned to athletics very late in life and entirely by accident.

To hear him tell it, his tragedy was fortunate, but to almost any-one else it would have been soul-crushing.

A severe leg break at 15 while playing hockey cut short his dreams of playing in the NHL. Fast forward two decades later and his leg broke again, revealing severe problems that would require 30 operations over the next two years.

It all came to a head in June 1999 when Rosen was 39, the father of three young children. He went to Israel and was told he would need to have his right leg amputated or he would die. He quickly decided to follow through with the operation and has never regretted it.

“I knew I was going to be OK. I said, ‘Now my life begins.’”

And in a way, he was right.Less than three years later after

playing a few years of sled hock-ey, Rosen was in the stadium at Salt Lake City, hearing the cheers as the Canadian Paralympic team marched out before a crowd of 55,000 people.

The team didn’t win a medal at that Games, coming fourth, but was able to capture gold in Turin four years later. Rosen continued on until he was nearly 50 at the Van-couver Games in 2010. He retired

later that same year.Rosen showed the students how

his artificial leg worked, took it on and off, told them a new leg costs “$80,000,” and explained his adven-tures with water-skiing one-legged.

And he used props to explain his journey. He showed off his “win-

nings” in Salt Lake City, a toque for coming in fourth place, the gold medal in Turin, and the Pan Am Games torch he carried at last year’s Toronto Games.

But it was the stories he told that will last in the memory of the hundreds of students who heard

him speak.“There’s no better experience in

sport than to put that Canadian jer-sey on,” he told the students about his 10 years as a Canadian athlete.

Rosen is very proud of being an elder athlete and relishes telling his story of his late-blooming athletic career. And he feels it makes him the ideal role model for youth.

“If you believe in yourself, any-thing is possible,” he told the kids.

Students admired what Rosen had to say.

“He was very confident in him-self and I was very impressed,” said Grade 6 student Daniel Sansone, 11.

Anthony Critelli, 13, in Grade 8, said, “He never let anybody stop him. He was determined to do something great.”

And 11-year-old Nicholas DeAn-gelis, in Grade 6 said, “He’s a great role model and has a fighting spir-it.”

Greg Maltby, Grand Knight of the King City council of Knights of Columbus presented a cheque for $1,000 on behalf of the knights and St. Bernard’s parish to Nancy Black of Special Olympics Ontario’s Aurora branch at the event.

❚ Charges for staged collision

Police have laid charges after an investigation into what they say was a staged collision in King Township.

On Sunday, Jan. 10, at 8:30 p.m., York Regional Police were called to a hit-and-run collision at Weston and Lloydtown-Aurora roads. Offi-cers found a damaged Volvo station wagon with two women complaining of injuries. The women had to be extri-cated by firefighters and were taken to hospital. Police say the injured driver told them she drove into the intersec-tion where her vehicle was struck by a white truck that fled the scene.

Officers obtained video surveil-lance of the intersection from a near-by business in which police allege the collision was staged and no hit-and-run took place.

Police say the accused submitted fraudulent claims to their insurance company.

Charged are Fatin Elias, 46, Jour-jeet Shahara, 52, Samid Shehara, 47, and Salam Shehara, 34, all of Toronto.

They are charged with fraud over $5,000, conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, false pretence, utter forged documents, public mis-chief and obstruct police.

❚ Nobleton pharmacy robbery

Investigators with the York Regional Police Hold-Up Unit are seeking public assistance in identify-ing a suspect following a pharmacy robbery in Nobleton.

On April 6, just before 2:45 p.m., officers attended a pharmacy located in the area of King Road and Hwy. 27, following reports of a robbery.

A lone male suspect entered the pharmacy, where he attended the prescriptions counter, placed a gun on the counter and made a demand for drugs.

The suspect obtained a quantity of prescription drugs and left the store.

No one was physically injured. The suspect is described as white,

clean shaven, 30 to 50 years old, five-feet, 10-inches tall with a slim build.

He was wearing a black toque, grey sweater-jacket with horizontal stripes with a black hooded sweater underneath, black pants, black shoes and carrying a black gun.

The suspect was last seen leaving the area in a black SUV-type vehicle.

ASK Studio Tour is April 23-24By Tim Kelly

[email protected]

The highlight of every art lover’s dream in King City is coming up next weekend when Arts Society King presents its annual ASK Studio Tour Saturday, April 23 and Sunday, April 24.

ASK executive director Teri Hast-ings said this year’s tour pairs local anchor artists like Karola Stein-brecher, Helen Hermanns, Liina Peacock and Brigitte Granton with a well-known guest artist.

She’s especially excited about renowned sculptor Gordon Becker.

“He’s known for doing real life-sized wooden sculptures of dancers

and he will be revealing a brand new piece on the first day of the tour at 11 a.m. at Studio Solo at 42 Manitou Dr., in King City,” Hastings said.

She also said visitors asked that more of the venues on the tour be bunched closer together so tour-ists wouldn’t have to travel so far throughout the township to see all the exhibits.

“We have really clustered our artists this year to make it easier to see them,” Hastings said.

The tour, which is free of charge, runs both days from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at numerous locations throughout King Township.

There may have been snow on the ground this week, but the farmers of the Holland Marsh can’t wait to get growing.

“It all depends on the mood swings of Mother Nature,” said farmer and King Town-ship councillor Avia Eek as to when farmers in the marsh can till the soil.

Often dubbed the ‘Salad bowl of Canada,’ the Holland Marsh stretches over several York Region municipalities including King Town-ship and covers 125 farms, growing more than 60 crops over 7,000 acres of prime agri-cultural land.

Many farmers have spent the long win-ter months doing the hard work of having their soil tested, deciding what type and how much fertilizer to use and doing some prep work on their fields, Eek said.

She’s been farming onions and carrots in the marsh with husband Bill for 27 years so

has plenty of experience with the ups and downs of the business.

“The climate and weather have a lot to do with the growing season but over the decades we’ve seen it start later and finish later. It now begins two or three weeks later and ends two or three weeks later than it used to,” Eek said. She notes the family used to aim for a final harvest of Halloween but now sometimes doesn’t wind up until the start of December.

It’s all weather-dependent.She said they’ll aim to start planting by the

end of this month or beginning of May.Locals who want to taste produce fresh

from the marsh can start taking advantage of it next month at the Canal Road Farmer’s Market in Bradford and then in June at the Schomberg Farmer’s Market and the King City Farmer’s Market.

About: Each month, The King Connection will publish a list of interest to the community. This month: We take a look at some of the local produce coming out of the Holland Marsh. While there are more than 60 different crops grown in the Marsh, we wanted to profile some of the more unusual and less traditional. These are ones that people might not think of right away (such as carrots and onions). List items presented alphabetically along with some suggested usages in the kitchen.

9 Holland Marsh produce items you might not know about

Special thanks to Avia Eek and Matt Sheppard for their help with this feature.

Planting in the Holland Marsh set to begin later this month

What will it take to stop scourge on our roads?

he anger and disgust in the room is palpable.

Every monthly meet-ing of the York Region chapter of madd —

Mothers Against Drunk Driving — an officer from the OPP and another from York Regional Police update members and volunteers on impaired collisions, charges laid and courtroom decisions.

Every single time, as we listen to details of wrong-way drivers, people swerving off highways or into other drivers, driving with open liquour in vehicles, or driv-ing impaired with innocent chil-dren in the car — mouths drop open, heads shake sadly and sometimes faces get flushed or eyes tear up.

You see, for many members of the madd York group, impaired driving is not just a faceless crime — it’s very personal. It’s a crime that has destroyed their fam-ily, maimed or killed a loved one, caused real pain and suffering.

But every month, the cycle just gets repeated again; different details and different drivers — but the same carnage and destruc-tion.

I drive home from the meet-ings each month worried about drivers on the roadway beside me, wondering if they are taking chances with their own lives or mine.

If you’re a sensible, responsible driver, you probably thought it was sad and ironic that as the trial fin-ished up for the King man found guilty of impaired driving causing the death of three children and their grandfather, another 13 driv-ers on York Region roads Easter weekend were caught by police and face impaired charges.

Now add to that another 13 drivers facing impaired charges from this past weekend — April 8 through 10 — and you may begin to feel the frustration of both police and madd members.

Frustration? Maybe I should say fury...

And don’t think these incidents are all young drivers joyriding in

their parents’ vehicles. Don’t think they are all men, either.

In November of last year we had a nine-year-old boy forced to call 911 to report his mom driv-ing drunk with him in the vehicle. Fortunately, they were pulled over by police in Newmarket and no lives were lost.

In mid-March of this year, a Newmarket mother was charged with impaired driving after a long investigation into a January two- vehicle crash, when another driver was killed, and two of her children and one friend were sent to hospital, as they had been in her car.

Just days later, a Georgina man was charged with impaired driv-ing after an ATV collision injured his five-year-old son.

Capping off this litany of woe is this past weekend’s near tragedy. A Toronto woman, 58, was driving the wrong way on Leslie Street in Richmond Hill, so intoxicated and oblivious — police say — that she didn’t even notice the police cruis-er with sirens and lights activated.

The officer was forced to box in the vehicle to stop it, after the driver narrowly missed colliding head-on with another vehicle. Breath readings after her arrest showed she had twice the legal limit of alcohol.

What’s going on? Are more citi-zens calling 911 to report suspect-ed drivers and thus more are being arrested by police? Are more driv-ers thinking it’s socially acceptable to drink and drive?

When are we — as a society — going to say enough is enough of this scourge?

COMMUNITY VOICES

By Eva FolksSpecial to The Connection

The muse finds the art-ist, taps them on the shoulder, and in an unspoken language inspires them to create. The muse is the source of inspi-ration; the spirit an artist breathes into their work, and each artist experiences the muse in a different way. We asked the artists taking part in this year’s Studio Tour King were happy to explain:

For landscape artist Dar-lene J. Winfield, the muse comes in the form of nature. “When I work in my studio, I have all the windows open and feel as though I am out-side.” Sculptor Brett Davis describes it this way, “Just hearing the birds and enjoy-ing the natural surroundings of my studio makes me feel complete as an artist.” And for photographer Steve Silver-man, inspiration is, “a journey into self-discovery. A spiritual connection. The sense of free-dom and the peace and soli-tude that comes from bond-ing with nature.”

Other artists find nature playing a different role. Textile

artist Ann Murray Livingstone, and painter Jacqueline Eng-land, both find their inspira-tion from their love of animals, especially horses. Jacqueline said, “I find their beauty, grace, and for the most part loyalty, to be the greatest reward any-one could hope for.” For artist Grazyna Tonkiel, these same qualities are found through her many years of devotion to the study of butterflies. “I try to express not only their fragile beauty, but the souls they carry.”

But it’s not just nature – colour is a strong supporter of creativity. Weaver Inge Dam said, “Sometimes, I find inspi-ration in nature, but most often I find inspiration from working with many differ-ent colours and combining them with complex weave structures.” Glasswork art-ist Kathleen Rodgers values colour above all. “Colour is the first thing that draws me to a particular piece of glass.” For jewellery artist Karen Hunter, a combination of shape and colour are the inspirations for her unique creations.

For photographer Tom Wray, inspiration has nothing

to do with nature or colour, but instead, “Seeing what most people don’t see. A dif-ferent perspective, angle or moment in time.” Though Sunni Anne Ball is drawn to colour, she expresses that she also finds, “The sun. Eyes. Unexpected details.” of interest to her muse. Sculp-tor Gordon Becker equates inspiration with emotion. “I am inspired by almost every-thing. Life, movement, pain, love, hate, laughter, tears, fear, ecstasy.” And then there are those who find inspiration in unlikely places. Artist Judy Sherman said, “Just standing in the shower under hot water, sketching in my mind, new ideas come to me.”

There is so much more that can be revealed about the inspirations in an artist’s life. The best approach to find out more is to connect with an art-ist on a personal level. A great way to do that is to take a jour-ney through creativity during this year’s Studio Tour King which takes place April 23 and 24 throughout King Township. ❚ Looking aheadOn Sundays Apr. 17 and

24, at 11:15 a.m., lay leader Ed Elliotson will lead us in worship.

The deadline for donations for the Syrian refugees to be matched by our church has been extended to Monday april 25. The cheque should be made out to “Nobleton United Church”, with “King for Refugees” on the memo line. We have a mail box at the rear of our church, located at 6076 King Rd., Nobleton, L0G 1N0 or you can call 905-859-0761 if you need Nancy to pick up your cheque.

❚ Looking BackLast Sunday, we joined

with Schomberg United to say “Goodbye” to their old build-ing. The service was a grand celebration of the life of the congregation. Minister Brian Nicholson informed us that he had received greetings and blessings for the Schomberg congregation from Neutral Bay Uniting Church in Aus-tralia from his partner Darren

Liepold. There were plenty of joyous songs, led by organist Jeane Whetstone and trum-peter Lowell Tipping of Tot-tenham. The group Front Porch Harmony sang several numbers while playing their instruments (guitar and zith-er). Dennis Posno, the Chair of Northern Waters Presbytery, provided an interesting story of children being taught the old “Here’s the church, and here’s the steeple, open the doors and see all the people.”

Sheila Darnowski provid-ed the history of Schomberg United from its beginnings in 1848 as a Wesleyan Method-ist Church, the amalgama-tion with the Union Sabbath School, the construction of a church building which became the Masonic Hall, the new church at the present location and all its extensions and remodels. Jack Camp-

bell mentioned that he had received information from a great-great granddaughter of one of the original circuit ministers, who felt that build-ings were not as important as doing the work of the church. She felt that her great-great-grandfather would have been pleased that Schomberg Unit-ed was now going to be doing more outreach activities. The Schomberg United congrega-tion was officially welcomed by Chris Crocombe, the People’s Church Warden of St. Mary Madalene Anglican Church.

After the service we enjoyed a lovely lunch down-stairs and a few members spoke of their memories. Betty Huisman gave a very heart-warming speech of her life in the church, her good wishes for Nicholson who was to fly to Australia on Monday, and her eager anticipation of good things for the future.

Plans are MOVE-ing for-ward in the massive project to transfer Township Hall to a brand new King Road loca-tion.

Township Council on April 4 confirmed the design/bid/build prime consultant will be The Ventin Group Architects Ltd., at a cost of $867,431.

The Ventin Group was chosen over Barry Bryan Associates after interview and evaluation score results were tabulated for the project, expected to cost $11 million to $13 million.

It will see the current township hall, located at 2075 King Rd. in King City closed,

declared surplus and sold. The new township hall will open at a refurbished and rebuilt former Holy Name Elemen-tary School at 2585 King Rd. several years from now.

This coming Saturday, April 16, from 9 to 11 a.m. three King Township Food Bank centres in King are open to provide groceries, produce and breads to over 200 people residing in King.

If you need some assis-tance, and are not already registered, call the Food Bank line 905-806-1125 and leave a message; your call will be returned as soon as possible.

The only requirement is proof of residency in King, but we need to talk to you to ensure the right amount of food for your family size is delivered to the proper loca-

tion. March brought Easter, with

generous donations of frozen turkeys by John’s No Frills, Round the Bend Farm and the King Fire Fighters Asso-ciation. Artisanal whole grain breads were on hand from The Stonemill Bakehouse, cour-tesy Hermanns Contracting and homemade Italian breads were donated by Dorio’s Ital-ian Kettleby Bakery.

Root vegetables, includ-ing carrots, onions, beets and parsnips were donated by Hill-side Gardens and a cucumber grower added several cases of English cucumbers to the

selection of produce available. It has been a time of sur-

prise donations...Nobleton Lions presented a

cheque for $1,500 to the Food Bank at their dinner on April 4. Their generosity continues to grow beyond belief!

Family and guests at a small surprise party for the President’s milestone birthday donated several hundred dol-lars instead of gifts in response to the suggestion by the party organizers.

❚ Stay tuned to this space next week as we update you on the corporate sponsorship front for the KTFB.

hen Dave Joslin passed away Feb. 21 at age 75, many resi-dents of Richmond Hill felt the town had

lost a good friend. The eulogy by Mayor Dave

Barrow brought mourners to tears.

“Jozzy”, the mayor said, was one of the best friends anybody could have.

“We all have a piece of Dave in our memories. Keep it there and think of him when you need a friend.”

Dave was a kind, gentle soul who loved life and loved his community and according to his sons, Jeff, Mark and Paul, he was following in the footsteps of his father, Herbert Joslin, a hero to the community 54 years ago.

Herbert died while trying to stop an explosion that nearly flat-tened much of Vaughan and Rich-mond Hill in 1962.

Herbert had worked as a store clerk for Superior Propane and was a volunteer firefighter in Vaughan.

He’d rushed to the scene of a gas leak, shutting of a valve at the plan to save countless lives. Seven houses were demolished that day but damage could have been much, much worse.

Dave Joslin was friend and inspiration to many

WKnowing his father died a hero

(awarded, post-humously, the Queen’s congressional award for bravery) impacted Dave deeply.

He and his twin sister, Peggy Viverette, carried on Herbert’s leg-acy, striving to be a good human beings, respected, loved and giv-ing to the community. He raised his own children and grandchil-dren Derek, Brett, Jamie, Kyle and Charlotte the same way, Paul said.

For the five grandchildren it was simple: “Our great grandad was a hero and our grandad was a legend.”

Today, his family remains well-known in Richmond Hill. Daughter-in-law Darlene Joslin is director of the town’s parks and recreation department, Paul is a firefighter for the town and anoth-er son, Mark, is a professional hockey trainer/coach in town.

Judy, his wife of 54 years, was the love of his life and family was everything to him. Their life together revolved around the boys’ games and tournaments and Dave volunteered as coach, convener and cheerleader.

Even after the boys grew older and could drive themselves to games, Dave and his wife Judy could be found perched in the stands, cheering them on — a tra-dition they carried on with their grandchildren.

“I don’t think that he realized

for the celebration of life and as tributes and condolences poured in online, it became clear the facilities at Marshall Funeral Home would not be large enough.

The service was held instead in the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts on a Friday morning, March 4.

how he was positively affecting 13 kids — making us feel like all stars,” said Mark Tullock, one of the athletes Dave coached.

“That encouraged me to want to coach myself using Mr. J’s method — fun first, winning sec-ond.”

When the time came to plan

Even that large venue couldn’t contain all the well-wishers who wanted to celebrate Dave’s life, leaving standing-room only to hear sister-in-law Jackie Richard-son and nieces Kim Richardson and Cori Byberg sing, the mayor eulogize and friends reunite and reminisce.

“Every time I and everybody else turned around, we were run-ning into people that we haven’t seen in a long time and we had stories to share with each other,” Bill Neilson, family friend, said.

“He was a friend to Richmond Hill.”

And he was a friend to many who frequented nearby Eagles Nest golf course, where Dave spent the past 12 years as the club’s best known, most respected greeter/starter.

“He truly was a goodwill ambassador, not only for the golf course, but for mankind,” said Ron Nicholson.

April 29, opening day at the course this year, will also be Dave’s birthday and it will be bit-tersweet, as golfers learn about Dave’s passing, and friends and family take his place at tee-off to greet them and offer tributes to a man well loved.

Dave Joslin passed away at age 75, with family and friends offer-ing tributes to the man as a goodwill ambassador in hockey arenas and ball dia-monds, on the golf course and in the wider community of Richmond Hill. Even the downtown theatre wasn’t large enough to accommodate all those wish-ing to pay their respects.
