Canadian golf industry drives for better numbersBy Chris [email protected]

anadian golf is alive and well, according to a state of the game survey from

six National Allied Golf Associa-tions.

Director of golf at St. Andrews Valley Golf Club in Aurora, Rob Pearce, shared his thoughts on the State of Canadian Golf report from six National Allied Golf Associations.

CFor some York Region golf pros and

administrators, however, the operative word is “well” in an industry that yearns for “great”.

The allied group, including Golf Canada, the PGA of Canada and bodies represent-ing course owners, superintendents and club managers, was buoyed by the posi-tive impact of golf and the spike in rounds played in the past 36 months. The group met and compared data last month during the 2015 RBC Canadian Open at Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville.

Golf play in 2015 to June 1 increased 14 per cent compared to a three-year average and was up 27 per cent over 2014, the group said. Regionally, only the Maritime provinces were down, explained by unusually poor spring weather conditions, while the western provinces led the country with exceptional early-season results.

An economic impact study released last summer said golf accounts for an estimated $14.3 billion of Canada’s gross domestic product. Included in that financial picture are more than 300,000 direct and indirect jobs, $8.3 billion in household income, $1.4 billion in property and other indirect taxes and $2.2 billion in income taxes. Overall, the Canadian golf industry’s value is estimated at $19.7 billion.

“The evidence of golf’s popularity in Can-ada is not surprising to those aware of the sport’s economics, and the good stories don’t stop there,” Canadian Society of Club Man-agers executive director Elizabeth Di Chiara said. “From environmental benefits to the charitable impact and tourism revenues, there are many reasons for the Canadian golf industry to be encouraged.”

There’s plenty to smile about, the group enthused. Some 5.7 million Canadian golfers play approximately 60 million rounds annu-ally. Environmentally, more than 175,000 hectares of greenspace is managed by about 2,308 golf course operators, including 30,000 hectares of wildlife habitat under golf course

stewardship. In 2013, there were nearly 37,000 charita-

ble events hosted at Canadian golf courses, compared to 25,000 in 2009. Using conser-vative estimates, these events raise more than $533 million for non-profit causes across Canada.

Golf’s good for tourism. In 2013, Cana-dian travellers spent $2.5 billion annually on golf-related travel within the country. For-eign golfers spent $1.6 billion on golf-related travel and on-course spending. Albeit, visi-tors spent $2 billion in 2009, according to an earlier study.

The recently released Golf Facilities in Canada 2015 report notes that since 2010, 29 facilities have opened in six different prov-inces. During that time frame, 158 facilities have closed. One in five of those closures was located in Ontario.

York Region, with its high concentration of more than 70 private and public courses and numerous retail and practice facilities, is a microcosm of Canadian golf.

In the recent past, we’ve seen favoured courses shuttered. These include Glenway Country Club in Newmarket, Kleinburg Golf Club, Highland Gate in Aurora and the deci-sion to explore the sale of Unionville’s York

Downs Golf Club to developers. The private Lebovic Golf Course, a sump-

tuous track on a freshly minted 75-home development at Leslie Street and Blooming-ton Road in Aurora, is the sole new offering and will open next spring.

While the golf associations paint a cheery national golf scene, members of York’s golf trade are a tad more pragmatic.

St. Andrew’s Valley Golf Club director of golf Rob Pearce has issues with the associa-tions’ statistics up to June 1. The Aurora professional agreed conditions were ideal in April and May, however, our near-record soggy June eliminated some 30 per cent of anticipated rounds.

“Due to Mother Nature, there’s a signifi-cant decline,” he said. “The numbers are trending to be flat by year end.”

Weather aside, golf is in flux, said Pearce.“People are conscientious,” he said. “The

spend is on hold. Everyone is looking for sales.”

The prevailing mood of golfers has also led to slightly lower merchandise purchases.

“Golf is experiencing a challenging time right now,” he said. “There’s an over-supply. That will adjust over time and golf will rebound.”

STAFF PHOTO/MIKE BARRETT

Part of the fix, Pearce believes, is for courses to distinguish themselves, offer value and quality and appreciate existing and new customers. Golf operators must also focus on young people. As such, St. Andrew’s’ 11-week junior golf program is drawing well from the 10-to-16-year-old demographic.

Bushwood Golf Club teaching pro Jelana Duncan agreed. A longtime advocate for involving more women and youths in the grand old game, the former Du Maurier and BMO tour player is optimistic about golf’s future.

“There’s still a lot of competition for the recreational dollar,” she said. “To grow the game, we need to promote programs for girls and women, bring kids to the course and get school classes involved.

“We’ve got to keep reminding people that the golf course is a wonderful place to socialize, do business and unwind.”

Duncan applauds the Golf Association of Ontario’s NXT program and the PGA of Canada for its youth and junior develop-ment initiatives.

A glass-half-full type, Shayne Dysart is a 30-year golf industry veteran. The longtime PGA of Canada professional and consultant at the Lebovic golf facility, admits the mar-ket is tough.

“Golf is holding its breath and it’s holding its own,” the Newmarket resident said.

He views golf course attrition as a posi-tive in that closures help distribute more players among existing venues. In terms of green fees lost to weather, Dysart is confi-dent dedicated amateurs will find ways to fulfill their annual quota before season’s end.

Course managers hosting golfers are well advised to engage their customers meaning-fully, he said.

From his experience, golf’s demograph-ics are static, with the number of players leaving equalling those coming into the game.

Still, golf clubs aren’t recession-proof, he said. To ensure that golf not only survives, but thrives, it’s imperative to approach the game from a generational perspective.

“It’s most important to drive junior golf and keep families engaged,” he said. “We need to cater to seniors, the cornerstones of the game.

“It’s critical we promote the recreational and competitive streams and make golf fun. We should not overburden the leisure golfer with all those rules.”

ith Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s visit to Governor General David Johnston on Sunday and the longest elec-tion since the 19th century,

you can look at the next 74 days until Oct. 19 as a good news/bad news proposition.

It’s good news for the media of course as we can, if we choose to, go flat out covering the candidates, leaders and issues for more than 10 weeks.

Hey, during the dog days of summer and early fall, it helps fill the news hole before the kids go back to school, councillors return to township/city hall and people tell us about the things that bug them.

It’s bad news for taxpayers because this twice-as-long election will hit you in the pocketbook. For every ad the parties put on the airwaves and in print, you’ll pay at least 50 per cent nationally, 60 per cent if it’s a local candidate spending the money.

And in an election that’s more than twice as long as the last two elections were, at 37 days each, that means the price could total hundreds of millions of dollars more than normal to the taxpayer.

In a way you can see it as good news because it does put the spotlight on lead-ers and local candidates like never before and that means democracy has a chance to shine.

With the first leaders’ debate tonight and let’s hope more to come, people will have a real chance to judge Conservative Leader Stephen Harper, Tom Mulcair of the NDP, Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau and Elizabeth May of the Green Party, warts and all. None of them will be able to say they didn’t get a fair examination by the end of this cam-paign.

It’s bad news because the party with the most money, the Conservatives, will have an unequal chance to influence the electorate.

To be fair, all parties had the same oppor-tunity to raise cash over the past four years, but the Conservatives were able to raise the most and they will be able to run the most ads over the longest stretch of time, targeting their opponents.

Is that right? Voters will have a chance to make that

judgment come Oct. 19.It’s good news because those less inclined

to vote, young people, will be pushed like never before to get out and get involved, especially with a longer campaign period. You can bet those parties who want the sup-port of the youth vote will push to get them to the polls using social media tools. With 2-1/2 months until voting day, they’ll have the time to make an impact.

It’s bad news because with such a long campaign, some voters will get turned off and tune out well before voting day and decide not to show up.

Will we break a 60 per cent voter turnout – the new gold standard for national elec-tions on voting day? With a tight three-way race, here’s betting yes.

Good, bad news with election call

■ EDITORIAL LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Instead of attack ads, discuss issues, facts

What can we, as individuals, do that will help to restore public confidence in Parliament?

Why should we, as members of the United Church of Canada, try to improve Parliament?

The United Church of Canada takes stands on social justice issues in the spirit of the New Creed that says, “We are called to be the Church... to love and serve oth-ers, to seek justice and resist evil.”

The founders of this church believed that ours is a living faith, a faith that is expressed not only in ministry, but also in mission in and with the world.

Has the United Church tackled prob-lems that were not necessarily church related? Yes, the church has made reso-lutions about resource extraction, racial justice, truth and reconciliation regarding the legacy of residential schools and the Israel/Palestine issues in the occupied territories.

We had much discussion at North-

ern Waters Presbytery’s peace and justice committee on how to have the federal system of Parliament work better.

All parties were represented on this committee.

One of the items that we were dis-turbed about is attack ads, particularly when an election has not been called.

We believe it is time to ban these types of ads.

Remember that ad that showed Steph-ane Dion having a bird fly over him and drop some dirt on him?

We should be having ads that actually discuss issues and facts. We need good people to run for Parliament and to all the members of the committee, this kind of attack will likely discourage many good people from running.

Long campaign will cost ushe race to become Canada’s next govern-ing party officially began Sunday with very little fanfare.

Of course, the fact the writ drop flew under the radar was predictable, given it came in the middle of a long weekend that falls in the heart of summer.

That’s precisely what the gov-erning Conservatives wanted, as they aim to draw as little atten-tion as possible to the fact this inordinately long, 78-day cam-paign will cost hundreds of mil-lions more public dollars than a typical election and only benefit them.

The current Conservative gov-ernment introduced the changes to the Canada Elections Act that allow for campaign expenses to go up proportionately with the length of the election. As a result, a long campaign benefits the party that can raise the most money.

Right now, that’s the Conser-vative Party.

There was a good reason the rules used to place a hard limit on campaign spending, regard-less of the campaign’s length. The Conservative Party tradi-tionally appeals to a wealthier demographic than, for example, the NDP, which means the Tories’ supporters, as a whole, have more money to donate to their political party of choice. A typical family with a combined household income of $60,000, for example, is much less likely to donate the $1,500 annual maxi-mum to its party of choice than a family with a combined income of $200,000.

Under the new rules, for every campaign day beyond the tradi-tional 37-day length, the spend-ing limit increases 1/37th, which for this election, works out to $675,000 per day.

The Conservatives are known to have raised the most money of any party as of the end of last year, and that trend wasn’t likely to change, so the lengthy campaign gives them a spending advantage.

At the local level, Conservative riding associations have more money than the Liberal, NDP,

Green and Bloc Québécois asso-ciations combined, according to an analysis conducted by the Canadian Press.

The start of the election cam-paign also places strict limits on third-party campaigning, mean-ing groups such as Working Fami-lies, the coalition of unions that has campaigned heavily against the Progressive Conservatives in provincial elections, won’t be able to buy much advertising. This restriction ensures most of the campaign spending will be done by the parties and candidates, which benefits the Tories.

To make matters worse, a whole lot of your money will go back to the political parties after the election.

Candidates are eligible to be reimbursed 60 per cent of their expenses if they get 10 per cent of the vote in their ridings, while parties can get a 50-per-cent reimbursement nationally if they get two per cent of the popular vote.

Therefore, if the Conservatives spend the most on their cam-paign, which they most certainly will, they will get more of your money back than any other party, giving them a massive financial head start for the next election.

Plus, public money also funds tax credits of at least 50 per cent for anyone who donates to a political party.

In a healthy democracy, one person or party should not be able to have their voice heard louder than others simply because they have more money.

Unfortunately, our democracy hasn’t been healthy for years and was made sicker by the Conser-vative government’s changes to the elections act.

King Township’s mayor and a local environmental group appear to be on a collision course over the need for a proposed massive road to be built in the coming decades just south of the township.

The GTA West Corridor, which would see a multi-lane highway built from Hwy. 401/407 in the west to York Region and Hwy. 400 in the east and could run just south of the King Township bor-der, is still many years away from construction.

But Concerned Citizens of King Township (CCKT) has joined with the Ontario Greenbelt Alliance (OGA) to question the need for the proposed highway at all.

Tim Gray, executive director of the alliance, sent a letter to the GTA West Corridor project team last week saying, “We don’t believe this highway will be needed.

“Instead of investing in the GTA West highway, we encour-age the province to continue the significant investments in tran-sit expansion, expanding existing highways and supporting future rail connections.”

Gray says expansion plans for highways 407, 410, 427 and 400 should handle anticipated popu-lation growth over the next few decades. He also suggests that with intensification expected in northeast Vaughan and Brampton in the decades to come, the GTA West corridor roadway won’t be required.

Greg Locke of Concerned Citi-zens, said his group firmly sup-ports Gray’s conclusions.

“Is this thing really necessary? Is it really in line with the pro-vincial diversified transportation network that’s going to be sustain-able? No public transit corridor is identified in this thing, no cycling corridor, it’s purely a highway,” said Locke.

He worries that it’s “going to cut through significant Greenbelt.”

While King Township hasn’t released a formal position on the

corridor, Mayor Steve Pellegrini said he’s not opposed to the east-west corridor.

While pointing out he’s “one of the largest advocates for pub-lic transportation – I’m excited the province is doing all-day GO service and I was active in getting both buses that King has in route 22 and route 61 – reality is the car is not going to go away,” he said.

“As long as people have cot-tages… we need roads. We need to move goods and services and people. It’s great to push public transportation and we need it, but the reality is, the car will always be around, it’s been around for 115 years, it will be around for another 100 years.”

Pellegrini would like to see the corridor run as far south of Noble-ton as possible, but also sees an advantage in that it can provide the perfect township bypass King

has been asking for.“Council has been on record

the last two terms as saying we need a bypass. Here’s a golden opportunity to get a bypass. To say don’t build this, is not realistic,” he said.

Even Locke admits the bypass is something Concerned Citizens had to consider in its thinking.

“We’ve (CCKT) been taking a balanced approach, a hands-off approach. Nobleton and King City are both in need of an east-west bypass.

“But we’re not looking for another major highway. We’re concerned it will just bring huge amounts of traffic north on Hwy. 27. What we think we have left of Nobleton could just get blasted away,” said Locke.

“Building more highways just builds more sprawl and it’s not a long-term sustainable solution.”

GTA West Corridor faces opposition from 2 groups

They golfed like they had “Satur-day Night Fever,” but when the last putt dropped at the mayor’s annu-al golf tournament, with a Disco Inferno theme, the final tally was $84,000 raised.

The tourney, held in mid-July at Cardinal Golf Club in Schomberg, gives money to a couple of impor-tant local causes, said Mayor Steve Pellegrini.

“For the past five years now, the money has gone to parks, recre-ation and culture within the town-ship. It’s very important for me and the other members of council that the money stays within King Town-ship,” Pellegrini said Tuesday.

Some beneficiaries of the event are children with special needs who attend local camps and require one-on-one care.

Pellegrini said care for such chil-dren can cost as much as $450 for a week. He said the tournament subsidizes special needs children in King Township who need assis-tance with one-on-one care, who would otherwise not receive it for camp.

“The rest of the money (from the tournament) goes into astroturf for a King City field at Villanova College or at Seneca College. It will allow for more playing time, earlier in spring and later in the fall,” he said.

The first priority for such a field, once constructed, would be King United Soccer.

Mayor’s tourney raises $84K

Schomberg’s Eric Lamaze helped Canada win a gold medal during show jumping in the Pan Am Games last month.

“I was really happy for Cana-da, but I was happy for my horse as well,” said Lamaze, who was riding Coco Bongo, a 10-year-old stallion. “I knew… we had a chance at winning this and for sure a good chance to qualify for Rio.

Lamaze was joined by team-mates Yann Candele of Caledon riding Showgirl, Tiffany Foster of North Vancouver, B.C. riding Trip-ple X III, and “Captain Canada” Ian Millar of Perth riding Dixson at the OLG Caledon Pan Am Equestrian Park.

“We wanted this so badly as a team and for our country,” said Mil-lar. “Here at home, you can feel how much the crowd wants it for us. It makes us want to do it so much, and it’s a proud day.”

Canada won with a total of seven penalties from two rounds. The scores of the three best riders from each team in each round were counted.

Argentina took silver with eight penalties and the United States won bronze with 12.

Both Foster and Lamaze had

penalty-free rides during the final round of team jumping. Candele had one penalty for going over the allotted time of 83 seconds, and

Millar had five penalties. But despite the golden finish,

the day did not start so easily for them.

Foster’s horse refused to jump the 10th jump during her first run and it knocked the bars, which were shaped like hockey sticks. She was able to continue the ride but finished with seven penalty points.

“It was not an ideal start; that was not the plan,” she said. “When you come out of the ring after a run like that with this team, you never feel like anyone is down on you. They are just behind you all the way and you just really want to do a good job on the next run for them.”

Foster’s points from the first round did not count toward the team total, so Canada entered the second round in third place.

During the first round, Luis Lar-razabal from Venezuela fell. An ambulance arrived on the track, but he was able to get up and walk.

Juan Luzardo from Uruguay also had a fall near the end of his second run, but he was also OK.

This win guarantees Team Can-ada a spot in the Olympics.

“It’s not necessarily the same team who will go to Rio next year,” Millar said. “Although, I have a sus-picious feeling it might be.”

llan Mills left his legacy as a Tuscan Lodge member.

Born in 1906 on the family farm in

Tecumseth Township, he attended elementary school in Schomberg.

When he and his older brother, Clarke, were ready to attend high school, the family sold the farm and relocated to Newmarket, where Mills continued his educa-tion at Newmarket High School.

Mills studied at the Univer-sity of Toronto, where he earned his bachelor of arts degree and went onto earn a bachelor of laws degree at Osgoode Hall. He estab-lished his law practice in Newmar-ket in 1929.

After 13 years of courtship, Mills married Selena Lorine Rut-ledge, a nurse, and they raised three children, William, Margaret and Norman, in their home at 167 Prospect St.

In his solo practice, he quickly became known for his expertise in wills and estates before joining the Stiver, Vale, Peppiatt and Errington firm.

It wasn’t all work and no play for Mills, however, as he is remem-bered by his son, Norman, as an enthusiastic sportsman, partridge and deer hunting in the fall and fishing in the spring and summer in the Dunkerron-Horning’s Mills area, where he spent much of his childhood.

His green thumb and farm upbringing also had him tending to gardens at home.

In the cold months, Mills could be found socializing during a game of bridge or refinishing antique furniture.

He and his wife were both members of Trinity United Church, where he served on the board.

offering to do the legal work with-out charge for the lodge when it purchased its own building at 441 Millard Ave. and loaned the lodge building committee $1,000 out of his own pocket.

Mills was also the driving force behind the lodge incorporating to become a private company with-out share capital in 1957.

His dedication didn’t go unno-ticed, as he was presented his Grand Steward’s regalia for his ser-vices to the lodge and community and was considered the traditional installing master of Tuscan Lodge.

Mills died Nov. 26, 1981 and his funeral service was held with full Masonic Honours the day after.
