Gospel Acclamation Glory to you, Word of God, Lord Jesus Christ! If you serve me, follow me, says the Lord; and where I am, my servant will also be. Glory to You, Word of God, Lord Jesus Christ ST PATRICK On Friday 16 th March, our St Patrick’s school community at Nanango put on an awesome ‘green’ show to celebrate their patron saint; St Patrick. This was a gentle reminder to us all of the legend that Patrick was. As part of the celebraon, the story of Patrick was told. It is very important that we always remind ourselves the reason why we venerate saints in the church. The feast day of St Patrick is one that is widely celebrated but I wonder how many people stop to ask what the celebraon is really about. It is more than just wearing green and drinking Guinness etc. It is a celebraon of a missionary par excellence who was sold into slavery at a very young age, but who eventually turned that experience into a spiritual catalyst to free people from their spiritual bondages. This he did by introducing people to Christ as the only one who could grant the liberaon that lasts. This one me slave, aſter escaping from Ireland to France and studying for the priesthood, later on heard the call from God to go back to minister to the people of Ireland. This he did with the greatest zeal and was able to inspire the faith of the Irish. He was appointed Bishop of Ireland where for about 40 years, he was successful in spreading the message of God and converng many to Chrisanity. One of the biggest things he accomplished was to establish missions that went out to extend what he had started in Ireland all over Europe and other parts of the world. We have Patrick to thank for the faith we have here in Australia (and even for my people in Nigeria). It is because of his sacrifice and dedicaon that we enjoy the awesome relaonship we have with God. Now, this is why we celebrate this awesome saint. We thank God for using him. We also thank him for making himself available to be used by God. It couldn’t be more fing that the gospel of this weekend presents us with the ‘agricultural metaphor of the seed that has to die for it to produce fruit.’ This describes St Patrick perfectly; a slave with humble beginnings but whose sacrifice and dedicaon has benefied a lot all over the world (who would have thought?). We really have a lot to learn from Patrick. God always wants to use us to reach out to people. This may not come easy somemes. It may come at a cost. But that’s what we are about. Let us ask God for the grace to discern his voice and to use our giſts and talents for the good of all.
