husband of aMary, of whom wasborn Jesus, who is called Christ.

17 So all the generations fromAbraham to David are fourteengenerations; and from David untilthe carrying away into Babylon arefourteen generations; and from thecarrying away into Babylon untoChrist are fourteen generations.

    Birth of Christ

18 Now the abirth of Jesus

    Christ was1

on this wise: When ashis mother Mary was 2espoused toJoseph, before they came together, she was found with child bof the3Holy Ghost.

19 Then Joseph her husband, be-ing a 1just man, and not willing atomake her a publick example, wasminded to put her away 2privily.

20 But while he thought onthese things, behold, the angel ofthe Lord appeared unto him in adream, saying, Joseph, thou son of

David, fear not to take unto theeMary thy wife: afor that which is1conceived in her is of the HolyGhost.

21 aAnd she shall bring forth ason, and thou shalt call his name1JESUS: for bhe shall save his peo-ple from their sins.

22 Now all this was done, that itmight be fulfilled which was spo-ken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,

23 aBEHOLD, A VIRGIN SHALL BE

WITHCHILD, ANDSHALLBRINGFORTHASON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAMEEM-MAN-UEL, which 1being inter-preted is, God with us.

24 Then Joseph being raisedfrom sleep did as the angel of theLord had bidden him, and tookunto him his wife:

25 And 1knew her not till she hadbrought forth aher firstborn son:and he called his name JESUS.

    MATTHEW

MATTHEW is the gospel written by a Jew to Jews about a Jew. Matthew isthe writer, his countrymen are the readers, and Jesus Christ is the subject.Matthews design is to present Jesus as the King of the Jews, the long-awaitedMessiah. Through a carefully selected series of Old Testament quotations,Matthew documents Jesus Christs claim to be the Messiah. His genealogy, baptism, messages, and miracles all point to the same inescapable conclusion:Christ is King. Even in His death, seeming defeat is turned to victory by theResurrection, and the message again echoes forth: the King of the Jews lives. At an early date this gospel was given the title Kata Matthaion, Accordingto Matthew. As this title suggests, other gospel accounts were known at thattime (the word Gospel was added later). Matthew (Gift of the Lord) was alsosurnamed Levi (Mark 2:14; Luke 5:27).

9 Blessed are the peacemakers:for they shall be called the 1chil-dren of God.

10 aBlessed are they which arepersecuted for righteousnesssake: for theirs is the kingdom ofheaven.

11 aBlessed are ye, when menshall revile you, and persecuteyou, and shall say all manner ofb

    The Similitudes

13 Ye are the salt of the earth:abut if the salt have lost his 1sa-vour, 2wherewith shall it be salted?it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trod-

den under foot of men.14 aYe are the light of the world.A city that is set on an hill cannotbe hid.

15 Neither do men alight a 1can-dle, and put it under a 2bushel, buton a 3candlestick; and it givethlight unto all that are in the house.

16 Let your light so shine beforemen, athat they may see your goodworks, and bglorify your Fatherwhich is in heaven.

    Almsgiving

6 Take heed that ye do not your1alms before men, to be seenof them: otherwise ye have no re-ward 2of your Father which is inheaven.

    2 Thereforea

when thou doestthine alms, do not sound a trumpetbefore thee, as the hypocrites do inthe synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men.Verily I say unto you, They havetheir reward.

3 But when thou doest alms, letnot thy left hand know what thyright hand doeth:

4 That thine 1alms may be in se-cret: and thy Father which seeth insecret himself ashall reward thee

    openly.PrayerLuke 11:24

5 And when thou prayest, thoushalt not be as the 1hypocrites are:for they love to pray standing inthe synagogues and in the cornersof the streets, that they may beseen of men. Verily I say unto you,They have their reward.

6 But thou, when thou prayest, aenter into thy 1closet, and whenthou hast shut thy door, pray to

thy Father which is in secret; andthy Father which seeth in secretshall reward thee openly.

7 But when ye pray, ause notvain repetitions, as the heathendo: bfor they think that they shallbe heard for their much speaking.

8 Be not ye therefore like untothem: for your Father aknowethwhat things ye have need of, be-fore ye ask him.

9 After this amanner thereforepray ye: bOur Father which art in

    heaven, Hallowed be thyc

name.10 Thy kingdom come. aThy willbe done in earth, bas it is in heaven.

11 Give us this day our adailybread.

12 And aforgive us our debts, aswe forgive our debtors.

13 aAnd lead us not into temp-tation, but bdeliver us from 1evil:For thine is the kingdom, and thepower, and the glory, for ever.A-men.

14 aFor if ye forgive men their

trespasses, your heavenly Fatherwill also forgive you:15 But aif ye forgive not men

their trespasses, neither will yourFather forgive your trespasses.

    Fasting

16 Moreover awhen ye fast, benot, as the 1hypocrites, of a sadcountenance: for they disfiguretheir faces, that they may appearunto men to fast. Verily I say untoyou, They have their reward.

    17 But thou, when thou fastest,aanoint thine head, and wash thyface;

    Oaths

33 Again, ye have heard thatait hath been said 1by them of oldtime, bThou shalt not 2forswearthyself, but cshalt perform unto theLord thine oaths:

34 But I say unto you, aSwearnot at all; neither by heaven; for it

    isb

Gods throne:35 Nor by the earth; for it is hisfootstool: neither by Jerusalem; forit is the city of athe great King.

36 Neither shalt thou swear bythy head, because thou canst notmake one hair white or black.

37 aBut let your 1communicationbe, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for what-soever is more than these cometh2of evil.

    Retaliation

38 Ye have heard that it hathbeen said, aANEYEFORANEYE, ANDATOOTHFORATOOTH:

39 But I say unto you, aThatye resist not 1evil: bbut whoso-ever shall 2smite thee on thy rightcheek, turn to him the other also.

40 And if any man will sue theeat the law, and take away thy1coat, let him have thy cloke also.

45 That ye may be the1

judge, ye shall be judged: aandwith what measure ye 2mete, itshall be measured to you again.

3 aAnd why beholdest thou the1mote that is in thy brothers eye,but considerest not the 2beam thatis in thine own eye?

4 Or how wilt thou say to thybrother, Let me pull out the 1moteout of thine eye; and, behold, a2beam isin thine own eye?

    5 Thou hypocrite, first cast outthe beam out of thine own eye;

it shall be opened unto you:8 For aevery one that asketh re-

9 aOr what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will hegive him a stone?

10 Or if he ask a fish, will he givehim a serpent?

11 If ye then, abeing evil, knowhow to give good gifts unto yourchildren, how much more shall

your Father which is in heaven givegood things to them that ask him?

    Golden RuleLuke 6:31

12 Therefore all things awhatso-ever ye would that men should doto you, do ye even so to them: forbthis is the law and the prophets.

    Two Ways of Life

13 aEnter ye in at the 1strait gate:for wide is the gate, and broad isthe way, that leadeth to destruc-

tion, and many there be which goin thereat:14 1Because strait is the gate,

and 2narrow is the way, whichleadeth unto life, and few there bethat find it.

    False and True TeachingLuke 6:4345

15 aBeware of false prophets, bwhich come to you in sheepsclothing, but inwardly they are1ravening wolves.

    16

    a

Ye shall know them by theirfruits. bDo men gather grapes ofthorns, or figs of thistles?

18 That thou appear not untomen to fast, but unto thy Fatherwhich is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall rewardthee openly.

    WealthLuke 11:3436; 12:2234

19 aLay not up for yourselvestreasures upon earth, where mothand rust doth 1corrupt, and wherethieves break through and steal:

20 aBut lay up for yourselvestreasures in heaven, where nei-ther moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not breakthrough nor steal:

21 For where your treasure is,there will your heart be also.

22 aThe 1light of the body isthe eye: if therefore thine eye be2single, thy whole body shall befull of light.

23 But if thine eye be 1evil, thywhole body shall be full of dark-ness. If therefore the light that isin thee be darkness, how great isthat darkness!

24 aNo man can serve two mas-ters: for either he will hate theone, and love the other; or else hewill 1hold to the one, and despisethe other. bYe cannot serve Godand 2mammon.

25 Therefore I say unto you,aTake1 no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shalldrink; nor yet for your body, whatye shall put on. Is not the life morethan 2meat, and the body than 3rai-ment?

26 aBehold the fowls of the air:for they sow not, neither do theyreap, nor gather into barns; yetyour heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?

27 Which of you by 1taking

thought can add one cubit unto his2stature?28 And why 1take ye thought for

raiment? Consider the lilies of thefield, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:

29 And yet I say unto you, Thateven Solomon in all his glory wasnot 1arrayed like one of these.

30 Wherefore, if God so 1clothethe grass of the field, which today is, and to morrow is cast intothe oven, shall he not much more

clotheyou, O ye of little faith?31 Therefore 1take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or,What shall we drink? or, Where-withal shall we be clothed?

32 (For after all these things dothe Gentiles seek:) for your heav-enly Father knoweth that ye haveneed of all these things.

33 But aseek ye first the king-dom of God, and his righteous-ness; and all these things shall beadded unto you.

The Need for Delegation of Power

35 And Jesus went about allthe cities and villages, ateaching

in their synagogues, and preach-ing the gospel of the kingdom, andhealing every sickness and everydisease among the people.

36 aBut when he saw the mul-titudes, he was moved with com-passion on them, because they1fainted, and were scatteredabroad, bas sheep having no shep-herd.

    37 Then saith he unto his dis-ciples, aThe harvest truly isplente-ous, but the labourers arefew;

38 aPray ye therefore the Lordof the harvest, that he will sendforth labourers into his harvest.

5 These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, aGonot into the way of the Gentiles, and into anycity of bthe Sa-mar-i-tans enter ye not:

6 aBut go rather to the blostsheep of the house of Israel.

7 aAnd as ye go, preach, say-ing, bThe kingdom of heaven 1is athand.

8 Heal the sick, cleanse the lep-ers, raise the dead, cast out 1dev-ils: afreely ye have received, freelygive.

9 aProvide neither gold, nor sil-ver, nor bbrass in your 1purses,

10 Nor 1scrip for your journey, neither two 2coats, neither 3shoes,nor yet 4staves: afor the workmanis worthy of his 5meat.

ye go thence.12 And when ye come into anhouse, 1salute it.

18 aWhile he spake these thingsunto them, behold, there came acertain ruler, and worshipped him, saying, My daughter is even nowdead: but come and lay thy handupon her, and she shall live.

19 And Jesus arose, and fol-lowed him, and so did his adis-ciples.

20 aAnd, behold, a woman, which was diseased with 1an issue

of blood twelve years, came be-hind him, and btouched the hem ofhis garment:

21 For she said within herself,If I may but touch his garment, Ishall be whole.

22 But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said,Daughter, 1be of good comfort; athyfaith hath made thee whole. Andthe woman was made whole fromthat hour.

23 aAnd when Jesus came into

    the rulers house, and sawb

    Sight Is Restored

27 And when Jesus departedthence, atwo blind men followedhim, crying, and saying, bThou sonof David, have mercy on us.

28 And when he was come intothe house, the blind men came tohim: and Jesus saith unto them,Believe ye that I am able to dothis? They said unto him, Yea,Lord.

39 But he answered and saidunto them, An evil and aadulterousgeneration seeketh after a sign;and there shall no sign be given toit, but the sign of the prophet Jo-nas:

40 aFor as Jo-nas was threedays and three nights in the1

whales belly; so shall the Sonof man be three days and threenights in the heart of the earth.

41 aThe men of Nin-e-vehshall rise in judgment with thisgeneration, and bshall condemnit: cbecause they repented at thepreaching of Jo-nas; and, behold,a greater than Jo-nas is here.

42 aThe queen of the south shallrise up in the judgment with thisgeneration, and shall condemn it:for she came from the uttermostparts of the earth to hear the wis-dom of Solomon; and, behold, agreater than Solomon is here.

11 And he said unto them, Whatman shall there be among you, thatshall have one sheep, and if it fallinto a pit on the sabbath day, willhe not lay hold on it, and lift it out?

12 How much then is a man bet-ter than a sheep? Wherefore it is

lawful to do well on the sabbathdays.

13 Then saith he to the man,Stretch forth thine hand. And hestretched it forth; and it was re-stored whole, like as the other.

26 But when the 1blade wassprung up, and brought forth fruit,
