AN INTRODUCTION TO CLASSROOM LIGHTING

LC&D offers advanced lighting control solutions that dramatically lower electricity use in school designs. No matter what instructional methods are used, light-ing controls will improve the learning environment.

And since fl exible school facilities often serve as hubs for community meetings, local organizations also benefi t from the improved lighting environment.

By reducing the need for electricity, schools will also see lowered utility bills, allowing them to reallocate funds to other areas.

The Digital ClassroomDigital lighting controls improve upon the functional-ity of traditional (non-digital) controls because they provide advanced programming capabilities simply not available with old analog systems.

With digital lighting controls you get:

• Customized lighting scenarios• Better device-integration features• Advanced scheduling• A quicker installation process

IIncorporating Daylighting into Your School Design

“Among twelve models considered, we identifi ed a cen-tral tendency of a 21% improvement in student learning rates from those in classrooms with the least amount of daylight compared to those with the most.”*

Energy SavingsControls ensure that lighting levels are automatically reduced or off when they are not needed.

This saves the school district a good deal of money, because (according to the U.S. Department of En-ergy) lighting constitutes the highest percentage of electric energy consumed by educational buildings.

LC&D’s GR2400 system pays for itself in reduced utility bills, lowering energy consumption by as much as 35% or more.

Increased Teacher SatisfactionTeachers love the control that LC&D’s digital con-trols provide. Intuitive control stations allow them to choose pre-set lighting scenarios that complement their lessons. With the push of a button, lights are

dimmed for slideshows and quiet times, and then easily reset for normal lecture. Lighting controls make teaching more effective with just the right controls for classroom activities.

Improved Student Performance Studies show that better lighting improves the learning experience, resulting in improved test scores. The cor-relation between lighting and student progress is unde-niable, especially with systems that capitalize on natural daylight coming through windows and skylights.

Proper daylighting in classrooms result in an aver-age 21% improvement in learning rates.* LC&D of-fers the most advanced technology in the industry to help schools capitalize on this simple and proven daylight harvesting solution.

MULTI-USE SPACES

14

LLC&D’s digital lighting controls are fl exible enough to handle multiple lighting scenarios. This is impor-tant for areas that have a variety of uses, such as gymnasiums, cafeterias, and auditoriums.

In these spaces, pre-confi gured settings for common day to day scenarios are supplemented with on-the-fl y scheduling for special events.

Multi-use space controls include:

• Flexibility to meet the needs of different functions• Control of architectural and theatrical lighting

through one system• Intuitive controls for the system’s many users

Multi-Use Lighting ControlsAdaptable solutions for large, diverse spaces.

Teacher and Student Satisfaction• Faculty can choose the right lighting from a large

number of pre-programmed event scenarios• Changing schedules for any given scenario takes

a simple phone call• Use DMX panels to work lights in large audito-

riums as a slave to the house dimming system • Lamp life may be monitored, so that the main-

tenance staff can schedule changes – especially important for hard to reach lights, like those in a gym

• The system adapts to serve any purpose, so stu-dents enjoy optimal lighting for various activities

Energy Savings• The GR2400 system integrates devices, such as

occupancy sensors and photocells, for energy savings and increased effi ciency.

• Reduce design time while simplifying installation with digital connectors

Flexible Controls for Multiple UsesLighting controls in multi-use spaces section out the lights into groups. Gymnasiums that double as dance fl oors, cafeterias serving a prom banquet, and audi-toriums hosting a number of recitals and lectures – all need appropriately pre-confi gured controls. In this space, control stations are strategically located and confi gured to suit each activity. Additionally, switches can be disabled digitally during special events.

Food PrepThe Food Prep area uses a multi-button switch to control the caf-eteria (Zones 1 & 4 are controlled together) and food prep. The buttons are programmed for a “high”-”low”-”off ” scenario for each space.

StageStage lights are controlled with a small (4 circuit) Phaser dimming panel. The control station controls 4 scenes and raise/lower for 4 stage dimming circuits (expandable to 12 scenes). The 6-button switch on the left is used to control the House lights. Back-of-House (zones 1, 2 & 3) are controlled separately from Front-of-House (zones, 4, 5 & 6).

Coach SwitchSimilar to the Food Prep switch, the Coach switch controls their of-fi ce and each of the two gymnasi-ums (Zones 1 & 4, and 3 & 6 are grouped and controlled respective-ly). The buttons are programmed for a “high”-”low”-”off ” scenario for each space.

Durable Switching for Extreme ConditionsThe SwitchBolt is used at every entrance to the gymnasiums and locker rooms. LC&D recommends using this vandal/water resistant switch in areas with exposure to moisture or intense physical activity.

Illuminating School SpiritOutdoor sports complexes usually serve a variety of needs, such as home games and community carnivals. Because of this, outdoor lighting controls should also have optional settings for event-specifi c lighting needs.

In large campuses, control panels may be located throughout the campus, yet scheduling and manual control needs to be accomplished from a single lo-cation – a standard feature with LC&D.

1. Pathway lighting and Parking Lot lighting are zoned into two levels. The fi rst level operates from dusk until a scheduled off-sweep. The second level is usually considered a security lighting level and op-erates from dusk until dawn.

2. Stadium lighting should be zoned to account for differing activities. For ex-

ample a “Practice” scene may not be as well lit as a “Track Meet” scene. Manual controls should be provided in a box or admin area. The Smart Breaker Panel is the preferred control panel, due to its extremely high AIC rating and as a space savings solution.

3. Sports fi elds are often separately zoned to ac-commodate mixed night time use.

4. Due to the multi-purpose nature of most school campuses, manual controls for each of the above areas should be provided in appropriate adminis-trative offi ces.

EEstablish LC&D as your campus standard and reduce maintenance by the elimination of most fi eld calls.

Instead of programming on-site or making adjust-ments with a screw-driver atop a ladder, program or monitor your lighting controls right from your desk, eliminating time consuming (and costly) work orders. Better yet, make us part of your maintenance team – LC&D provides free lifetime remote programming, trouble shooting, and adjustments.

LC&D offers a number of hardware and software options for any application. We can even link your new buildings with existing ones to create a compre-hensive campus-wide or even district-wide system.

Building-WideSince our system is 100% digital, it is completely scal-able: the same relay panels, digital switches and ac-cessories are installed in both the smallest and larg-est applications.

This is how every room in the building is able to be part of the same lighting control bus – regardless of the room’s function.

Every component of the system is part of a single contiguous network: the Facility Manager only need access one lighting control system for schedule revi-sions and maintenance.

Campus StandardWhile classrooms are the focus of the learning insti-tution, other spaces common to typical K-12 cam-puses propose different lighting demands. The light-ing controls must be fl exible enough to satisfy all the scenarios (classrooms, offi ces, multi-use rooms, and outdoor facilities). It also must be scalable, so that the same technology is used regardless of the size of the application.

All of the indoor spaces of this K – 12 school (class-rooms, administrative offi ces, and multi-use facilities) are part of the same lighting control network. The entire system is accessed from the Facility Manager’s

The best strategy for any campus standard balances maximum energy savings against ease of use. LC&D offers the best of both.

Spaces are linked through a digital bus and controlled as appropriate to their use. All settings and sched-ules can be adjusted locally or remotely. Trending, run time, and event logging allow for complete en-ergy management.

Clasrooms & Labs: These rooms will use a combination of occupant sensors to switch lights off, photosensors to create automatic lighting levels, and Teacher Control Stations to manually override all automatic settings.

Common & Public Areas: They are controlled through centralized panels. Hallways will be controlled with a time clock during operational hours and an occu-pant sensor after hours.

Closets, Small Private Offi ces & Utility Spaces: These do not require a digital system - occupant sensors alone should suffi ce - unless remote programming/monitoring is required.

Presentation & Meeting Spaces: These spaces use multi-media controllers supplied by others. LC&D controls them via a Link-To Card for off-sweeps, etc.

Not shown: LC&D also offers a complete line of Links to Building Automation Systems.
