Klimaforum09The people’s summit

THe IDeA

A global people’s summit on climate change7.-18 December leaders from 192 nations will come to-gether in Copen hagen to try and agree on a climate deal to succeed the Kyoto protocol, which will expire in 2012.

It’s an open question whether they will reach an agreement or not, but in all likelihood a new deal is not going to be sufficient to solve the climate crisis. New ways of thinking, new values, and new ways of organizing society are called for as well.

The Heads of State can make news laws but they can’t change values. To do that, you and I will have to get involved in the process. In the end it’s up to us to take action on climate change. Klimaforum09 provides an open, free space where people from all corners of the world can come together, discuss, get inspired and work out constructive solutions. We unite people to create a green, socially just future.

Klimaforum09 is the first truly global people’s summit on climate change. So far more than 5.000 peoples from all continents have registered to participate. They include repre-sentatives from global NGO’s, fishermen from eritrea, rainforest activists from Paraguay, scientists, indigenous people from Alaska, students, artists, and engaged citizens from all walks of life. In short: Where the official UN conference brings together Heads of State, Klimaforum09 unites representatives from global civil society.

The initiative to establish this unique climate event came from a broad range of Danish environmental organizations. More than sixty international environmental networks and people’s organizations support the initiative. Among them are Friends of the earth, Cam-paign against Climate Change, Global Forest Coalition, Via Campesina, Permaculture Inter-national, and Indigenous environmental Network. Klimaforum09 is funded by the Danish Government.
