2. Original research plan for the current year

I. Subject Research a. Project Title of Dr. Monica Ang: "Korea and the Philippines: A Comparative Study of Political Leadership in Development" This study seeks to look into the role of political leadership in development in South Korea and the Philippines, particularly during and after the dictatorship of Park Chung Hee and Ferdinand Marcos. The central question revolves around what are the major points of convergence and divergence of leadership in these two countries. b. Project Title of Dr. Leodivico Lacsamana: "Philippine and Korean Popular Literature of the 20s, 30s, and 40s: Comparative and Transnational Perspectives" This study will provide a comprehensive comparative and transnational study of the early 20th century popular literature, specifically poem, short story and novel, of Korea and the Philippines. Using the tools of history (rigor and primary records) and the theories of literature (formalism, realism and romanticism) as its methodology, this study will analyze the following: 1) similarities and / or differences in these literary works, 2) 'rhetorical strategies' used by the writers in their works to articulate and highlight the themes contained in them, and 3) ideas, themes, and values conveyed in these forms of literatures.

c. Project Title of Mr. Arthur Vito Cruz: "Comparative Content Analyses of the Korean TV Drama and the Philippine Telenovela"

This study ventures to seek an explanation from the perspective of art and proposes to identify the successful narrative format of the top-rating Korean TV Dramas in the Philippines. The top-rating shows will be treated as a cinematic narrative and subjected to a closed formal analysis of the plot, setting and characters. Using David Bordwell's neo-formal framework, this study will analyze the settings and the main plot and character development of the shows. The formal structure of narratives of each show will then be compared to draw-out the formal commonalities.
