At our next membership meeting we will discuss some of

our next steps and ideas for civic engagement around the

2012 vote. As well as committees that will be formed to

continue the work of Fuerza Unida. Mark Brooks from

the Wesley Center will speak about the center and some

health and wellness resources on the Southside.

Youth of Fuerza Graduation

Fuerza Unida held a special film screening and graduation ceremony for the youth who

participated in the Fuerza Unida Summer Youth Leadership Program. The youth partici-

pants’ video projects were showcased at the ceremony and focused on social, economic

and political issues such as elderly abuse, immigrant worker’s rights, Mexican-American

identity and the separation of mixed-status families. Four short video biographies high-

lighting the women of Fuerza Unida were also showcased. The videos are available for

Three local community leaders spoke at the cere-

mony. One of them was Five time Emmy award

winning journalist Patricio Espinoza, who was also

nominated for a 2009 Lone Star Emmy for “The

Women of Fuerza Unida.” Mr. Espinoza spoke

about his personal history as a journalist working on similar issues as those depicted in

the youths’ films and encouraged the young people to continue their work in the media

sector. Also Patricia Castillo, founder of the P.E.A.C.E. Initiative spoke about the impor-

tance of youth programs that encourage young people to follow paths that do not lead

to violence. And lastly, the new San Antonio District 4 Councilman, Rey Saldaña spoke

about growing up on the Southside of San Antonio and his experience as a young person

in our community. He spoke about the importance of voting, community involvement

and encouraged the young people to follow their career goals.

The Summer Youth Leadership Program took place for 7 weeks from June 14th to July

30th and the young people met 4 days a week to complete their videos. The thirteen

young people that participated in the Summer Youth Leadership Program were each

awarded a $500 scholarship at the graduation. This was thanks to the contributions of

countless community members and organizations across the city of San Antonio.

Fuerza Unida organizo una graduación para los jóvenes que participaron en el pro-

grama de Liderazgo durante el verano. El evento incluyo los videos que los jóvenes

crearon sobre las cuestiones sociales, económicas y políticas como: el abuso de la

gente mayor de edad, los derechos del trabajador inmigrante, nuestra identidad

México-Americana y la separación de familias con diferentes estatus inmigratorio.

Tres líderes comunitarios hablaron durante la ceremonia. Uno de ellos fue el re-

portero y escenográfo, Patricio Espinoza, que también fue nominado para un 2009

Lone Star Emmy por su video “Las Mujeres de Fuerza Unida.” El Señor Espinoza

hablo sobre su historia personal y trabajo como periodista en cuestiones parecidas

a los cuales escogieron los jóvenes para sus videos. El animo a los jóvenes a que

siguieran su trabajo en los medios comunicativos. También hablo, Patricia Castillo,

fundadora del Iniciativo de Paz, ella hablo sobre la importancia de tener programas

de jóvenes donde puedan ellos seguir un camino sin violencia. Y finalmente, el nue-

vo concejal del distrito 4 de San Antonio hablo sobre su experiencia como joven en

el sur de San Antonio. También hablo sobre la importancia de votar, involucrarse

en su comunidad y animo a los jóvenes para sigan sus sueños en cualquier profesión

que ellos escojan.

El programa de Liderazgo para jovenes durante el Verano duro siete semanas des-

de el 14 de Junio hasta el 30 de Julio y los jóvenes se juntaban 4 veces a la semana

para completar sus videos. Los 13 jovenes que participaron recibieron $500 de be-

ca ese dia. Esto fue posible gracias a las contribuciones de varios miembros en

nuestra comunidad y organizaciones en todas partes de San Antonio.

Esmeralda Baltazar, Sean Encino, and Luis Reyna attended the Highlander Research and

Education Center Seeds of Fire Camp in Tennessee. Sean and Luis led a workshop on Me-

dia Justice and spoke about the work that has been done this summer in Fuerza Unida’s

Youth Leadership Program. During their workshop young leaders from across the Southern

U.S. were asked to consider, “what are the dominant stories being told in your campaign/

movement for social justice and what is the reality of the struggle. What do you want people

to be saying?” Great dialogue and ideas were shared, but most importantly the workshop

impacted Sean and Luis’s views on their work at Fuerza Unida. We held a Skype conference

with the young people at Fuerza while we were in Tennessee to discuss the videos we were

making. Our focus was to discuss how we could improve the scripts to counter what popular

media outlets are saying about our community and struggles for social justice. Esmeralda,

Sean and Luis have plenty of stories to share about the rest of the camp which included: Im-

migration 101, community organizing, juvenile justice, power analysis, art and culture and

many other workshops. We have committed to offering a Mini-Seeds of Fire Camp in San

Antonio and will be sharing more about that in the coming months.

Fuego en el histórico Centro de Investigación y Educación Highlander. Sean y Luís dirigie-

ron un taller sobre la justicia en los medios comunicativos y hablaron sobre el trabajo que

han hecho este verano en el programa de Liderazgo Juvenil en Fuerza Unida. Durante el

taller, les pedimos a lideres jóvenes de todo el sur de los Estados Unidos que consideraran,

“cuales son las historias dominantes que se dicen en su campanas/movimiento por la justicia

social y cual es la realidad de la lucha.” Fue un gran dialogo e ideas fueron compartidas,

pero mas importante el taller impacto las vistas de Sean y Luís en el trabajo de Fuerza Uni-

da. Llevamos acabo una conferencia por computadora con los jóvenes en Fuerza cuando

estábamos en Tennessee para discutir los videos que estábamos haciendo. Nuestro objetivo

fue discutir como podemos mejorar los guiones para combatir lo que dicen los medios de

comunicación popular están diciendo acerca de nuestra comunidad y las luchas por la justi-

cia social. Esmeralda, Sean y Luís tienen historias abundantes para compartir acerca del re-

sto del campamento incluyendo: Inmigración, organización comunitaria, arte, cultura y mu-

chos otros talleres. Nos hemos comprometido a ofrecer un campamento de Semillas de Fue-

go en San Antonio y vamos a compartir más información en los próximos meses.

Fuerza Unida was formed in 1990 when one of the Levi’s Strauss factories on the South side of San

Antonio closed, leaving over 1,150 workers without jobs and with unjust severance pay. The

women organized themselves to demand fair compensation and better working conditions from

Levi’s. Through organizing efforts, Fuerza Unida has become involved in many other social struggles,

working on issues of women’s empowerment for self-sufficiency, women’s and labor rights, immi-

gration, environmental issues and health education. Fuerza Unida empowers women workers and

their families to achieve social, economic and environmental justice through education, organizing

and advocacy. We host a sewing cooperative, food catering, youth leadership program, member-

ship, education program and food pantry.

Fuerza Unida se formó en 1990, cuando una de las fábricas de Levi Strauss en el lado sur de San An-

tonio cerró, dejando a 1,150 trabajadoras sin empleo y compensación por despido injusto. Las mu-

jeres se organizaron para exigir una compensación justa y condiciones de trabajo mejor en Levi's. A

través de los esfuerzos de organizarse, Fuerza Unida se ha involucrado en muchas otras luchas so-

ciales, que trabajan en temas de apoderar a las mujeres para la auto-suficiencia, los derechos de la

mujer y laborales, inmigración, medio ambiente y educación para la salud.
