Athletic Director

John J. (Jack) Conboy was namedLa Salle athletic director on Jan-

uary 3, 1969, succeeding James J.

Henry who had retired after 35 yearsas Explorer A.D.

A 1950 graduate of La Salle,

Conboy recently retired from the

U.S. Army with the rank of lieutenant

colonel after 20 years service. A vet-

eran of three wars (WW II, Korea and

Vietnam), he served on the ROTCstaff at La Salle from 1960-64.

Conboy was a member of St. Joseph's Prep's last city championshiofootball team in 1939, and after three years of World War II service in

Europe, Conboy enrolled at Georgetown where he played football for

two years before transferring to La Salle.

He was assistant football coach at St. Joseph's Prep from 1948 to

1950. He also coached Army football and basketball teams in Europe

and Hawaii and organized a triathlon team at La Salle which produced

three former members of the U.S. Army modern pentathlon team-Don Walheim, Bill Conroy and Gary McNulty.

Conboy, 47, who holds an M.B.A. degree in Industrial Management from

Temple University, resides in Drexel Hill, Pa. with his wife, Anne, and

four children.

JOSEPH F. O'DONNELLAssistant Athletic Director

Joseph F. O'Donnell was appointed

assistant A.D. and coordinator of

Hayman Hall, the college's new $4.0

million physical recreation center

in March of 1972.

A 1965 graduate of La Salle with

a B.A. in economics, O'Donnell had

taught social studies at Father

Judge, his high school alma mater,

from 1965-70. During the latter

period, O'Donnell coached the

school's soccer squad and was cred-

ited with developing 28 All-Catholic

players, four of whom achieved All-Scholastic honors, and one All-

American status.

In 1970-71 O'Donnell moved to a full-time position with the City of

Philadelphia as recreation leader at the Jardel Center. He was a memberof the Department of Recreation Soccer Committee, and also assisted

Bill Wilkinson with the 1970 Explorer soccer team which posted the

first winning season in the college's history.

O'Donnell, 29, and his wife Marie, reside in northeast Philadelphia.

MEET THE EXPLORER COACHING STAFF

PAUL W. WESTHEADHead Basketball Coach

La Salle College basketball coach

Paul Westhead, 33, who rapidly es-

tablished himself as one of the better

young strategists in the game, is in

his fourth year as the Explorers' head

mentor.

Westhead lists a career coaching

mark of 41-36, highlighted by his

1970-71 five capturing 20 of 27 con-

tests, upsetting NCAA semi-finalists

Western Kentucky and Villanova, andparticipating in the NIT.

Last year, Westhead guided his

young squad to a 15-10 record, which earned him the 'Big Five Coach of

the Year' Award from the B'nai B'rith Sports Lodge of Philadelphia, and a

new four year contract from La Salle.

Westhead began his career at Cheltenham high in 1964, gradually build-

ing a winning tradition, which culminated in the suburban Philadelphia

school's first appearance ever in the P.I.A.A. state finals in 1968.

From 1968 to 1970, Westhead served as assistant athletic director at

St. Joseph's College, and coached the 1969-70 Hawk freshmen to an un-

paralleled 21-2 season.

The Explorer coach added some additional credits during the summerof 1972 when he coached the Santurce team of the Puerto Rican 'Superior'

league to a first place regular season finish. This past summer, Westhead

visited Bahia, Brazil to stage a court clinic as part of the state depart-

ment's 'Partners of the Americas' exchange program.

A 1961 graduate of St. Joseph's College, Westhead received a master's

degree from Villanova University in 1963, and had done some Ph.D. work

at Temple University. He has also served on the English department facul-

ties at Cheltenham high, St. Joseph's College, and La Salle College.

Westhead, his wife Cathy, and three children reside in Drexel Hill, Pa.

compiled a 34-11 mark, highlighted

by his '71-72 yearlings winning 20 of

23 contests.

The 31 year-old mentor with the

knowledgeable basketball mind, is no

stranger to this kind of success. As

coach of South Jersey's Bishop

Eustace Prep from 1966-70, O'Connor's amazing coaching log read 78-17,

including the New Jersey State Championship in 1969.

O'Connor, a resident of Upper Darby, Pa., is a 1963 graduate of St.

Joseph's College with a bachelor's degree in history.

THE ATHLETEThe young man who accepts the exciting challenge of representing

La Salle College on basketball courts throughout the nation will be one

who recognizes that he is supplementing his classroom participation

with athletic participation.

He will learn to discipline himself toward achieving a goal, to work

in close association with other men, and to acquire judgment and

responsibility. As such a student athlete, he will be, above all, a

gentleman.

PAUL GALLAGHERAssistant Coach

Paul Gallagher, a former Explorer

varsity basketballer and later headcoach at Drexel Hill. Pa's MonsignorBonner High, returns for his fourth

campaign as an assistant to coachPaul Westhead.

The 1964 graduate of La Salle

served as an assistant coach at Bon-

ner before becoming head coach at

St. James High in Chester, Pa. in

1966-67. Gallagher returned to Bon-

ner the following year, and went on

to compile a brilliant 57-19 career

coaching mark. His 1969-70 quintet finished with a fine 24-6 log, wonPhiladelphia's Catholic League Southern Division title and capped the

season with the Alhambra Catholic Invitational trophy at Cumberland, Md.

Gallagher, ^!9, who captained Bonner's 1960 City Championship five,

resides with hfs wife, Sue, and three children in Havertown, Pa.

DAVID A. (LEFTY) ERVINAssistant Coach

David "Lefty" Ervin is in his sixth

season as an assistant basketball

coach, and also distinguishes him-

self as an assistant baseball boss

at La Salle.

While a student at the college,

Lefty was a two-sport standout and

co-captain of the Explorer baseball

and basketball teams in his senior

year. In 1968 he was honored with

the Joseph Schmitz Jr. Award as

the senior who best exemplified the

high traditions of La Salle Collegein loyalty, sportsmanship and courage.

A starter on the basketball varsity as a sophomore, Ervin spent mostof the next two years as the Explorers' sixth man and gained a reputa-

tion as one of the outstanding substitutes in the nation. He scored a

total of 756 points for his career.

Lefty played baseball and basketball at Abington High before grad-uating in 1963. In addition to his duties at La Salle, he serves on thefaculty of Archbishop Ryan High.

Although we were satisfied with last year's 15-10 record, which included

victories over Southern California, New Mexico State, Duquesne, Niagara,

Western Kentucky, Canisius and Villanova, our 73-74 varsity will be point-

ing toward improvement.

Of course we'll miss the services of graduated Big Five and MAC All

Star Jim Crawford (19.6 ppg.-9.0 rpg.), but we do return several capable

veterans.

Gifted 6-5 junior Billy Taylor (17.7 ppg.-6.1 rpg.), a remarkable shooter

who had such a fine rookie campaign in '72-73, and 6-6 senior Joe DiCocco

(9.0 ppg.-9.5 rpg.), last year's leading rebounder, provide a sound nucleus

for success.

Adding even more optimism to our prospectus are two newcomers with

previous high school All-American credentials, 6-10 soph Joe Bryant in his

initial year of eligibility, and 6-8 Soph Varick Cutler, a transfer from

Maryland who becomes eligible in late December.

In addition, seniors 6-1 Steve Baruffi, 5-10 Frank Moffatt, and 6-4

Frank Doyle along with 6-0 soph Charlie Wise have each seen duty as

regulars and key reserves in their careers so depth will not be a problem.

Veterans 6-5 Joe Rapczynski, a senior, and juniors 6-8 Kevin McBainand 5-11 Steve Wiley are additionally capable performers.

Also in the picture are several promising rookies, 6-2 soph Glenn Collier,

6 10 freshman Donn Wilber and 6 frosh Barry Brodzinski.

We view the 1973-74 season as an exciting challenge, and with the

solid combination of experienced lettermen and talented new faces, our

expectations are success oriented.

Meet The

Explorers

With one of the finest rookie seasons in La Salle history behind him in '72-73,

Billy Taylor (no. 24) will again be a key factor in the destiny of this year s

Explorers.

GuardSenior 21 6-1 170

Vineland, N.J.

Steve has been a valuable asset off the

bench thus far in his career, but should be-

come a key backcourt figure in this year's

Explorer plans. While averaging only 4.7

ppg. as a junior, the quick and aggressive

J^ Jf^^^* £uard was explosive on occasion, getting a

career high 17 points in 15 minutes vs.

American University and 15 points in a re-

serve role vs. Villanova. In the latter contest,

Steve shut off the Wildcats' hot-shooting

Tom Inglesby while his mates opened an in-

surmountable lead. At Vineland high (Vineland, N.J.) Steve was a standout

cross-country and baseball team member besides playing some steady

basketball for coach Joe Richards. Biology major.

Barry D. Brodzinski

Frosh 18 6-0 175 Guard

Philadelphia, Pa.

With all the attributes of the mature floor

general, Barry figures to be a 'sleeper' on

the Explorer varsity despite his first year

status. Combining superb shooting with lead-

ership and initiative, Barry led the 1972-73

North Catholic high squad (coach Tony

Costantino) in scoring with 24.0 ppg. He

was named All-Catholic and All-City, and

closed his career with 2,053 pts., the best

ever at that Philadelphia school. English

major.

Joseph W. Bryant

Sophomore 19 6-10 200 Forward

Philadelphia, Pa.

A tower of talent whose initial eligibility

begins this season, Joe possesses unlimited

potential for greatness. His particular

uniqueness as a big man lies in a magic

shooting touch and superb mobility, making

him an offensive threat from anywhere on

the floor. A former high school All American

who was the most sought after player in

greater Philadelphia in 1971-72, MB' had a

stellar career at John Bartram high (Phila-

delphia) under coach Jack Farrell, averaging

27.1 ppg. and 14.0 rpg. Sociology major.

Glenn N. Collier

Sophomore 19 6-2 150 Guard

Philadelphia, Pa.

A nifty 'do-it all' backcourt ace, Glenn led

last year's La Salle sub-varsity in scoring

with 15.9 ppg. He's capable of making the

clutch play with an overall floor game that

makes things happen. The former 1972 All-

Catholic selection from West Catholic (coach

Bill Hoy) will be heard from over the next

three years. Business major.

Varick F. Cutler

Sophomore 20 6-8 200 ForwardNorth Tonawanda, N.Y.

A transfer from the University of Mary-

land, Varick will make his presence felt as

the strong and steady type when he becomeseligible in late December. A powerful forward

who can 'stick the ball' from medium range,

Varick averaged 15.2 ppg. and 8.4 rpg. as a

starter for the 1971-72 Terrapin frosh. Pre-

viously, he had achieved high school All-

American status with a brilliant career at

North Tonawanda high (N. Tonawanda, N.Y.)

under coach Ted Moore. Sociology major.

Joseph S. DiCocco (Co-Captain)

Senior 21 6-6 190 Forward /Center

Upper Darby, Pa.

A competent starting center for all 50

games in his varsity career, Joe led the 72-

73 varsity in rebounding with 9.6 rpg. and

scored 9.0 ppg. His brilliant 26 point (ca-

reer high)-17 rebound performance helped

La Salle crush Villanova, and Joe added su-

perb board jobs vs. Niagara (17 rbs.), South-

ern California (16 rbs.) and Lafayette (16

rbs.). The rugged frontcourt battler regis-

tered his top all-time rebounding effort of

18 grabs vs. Lehigh and Tulsa as a sopho-

more. At Monsignor Bonner high (Drexel Hill, Pa.) Joe achieved All-Cath-

olic status under coach Paul Gallagher in 1970. Business major.

Senior 21 6-4 190 Forward/GuardGlenolden, Pa.

Hampered by back trouble, Frank saw only

limited duty last year, after a fine sophomoreseason in which he averaged 13.1 ppg. and

shot a team-best 49.6% (128-258) from

the floor. A superior long-range marksman,Frank hit a career high 21 points vs. Fair-

field and notched his all-time best nine re-

bounds vs. Niagara, Biscayne and Baylor

during the 1971-72 campaign. The Explorers'

'70-71 frosh scoring leader (16.8 ppg.),

Frank was an All-Catholic standout at Cardi-

nal O'Hara high (Springfield, Pa.) under coach Jim Purcell. Accounting

major.

Kevin M. McBain

Junior 20 6-8 190 Center

Cliffside Park, N.J.

A rugged pivotman with lots of potential,

Kevin appeared in 21 contests primarily as

a frontcourt reserve in 72-73, averaging 1.5

ppg. and 1.5 rpg., and tabbing a career best

eight points and eight rebounds vs. Western

Kentucky. As an Explorer yearling, Kevin

topped his mates in scoring (16.2 ppg.) and

rebounding (12.5 rpg.), exhibiting sound of-

fensive talent. A former All-State player at

Cliffside Park high (Cliffside Park, N.J.)

under coach Bart Talamini, Kevin led his

scholastic squad to the New Jersey State championship in 1971. Liberal

Arts major.

Frank X. Moffatt (Co-Captain)

Senior 21 5-10 145 Guard

Cherry Hill, N.J.

Frank has run the Explorer attack with

precision and cleverness as both a starter

and key reserve in the backcourt over the

past two years. The 'mighty mite' averaged

4.2 ppg. for the '72-73 campaign, and has

highlighted his career with an 85.9% (55-

64) shooting mark from the charity stripe.

His career high of 17 points came vs. Fair-

field as a sophomore. A former track star at

Bishop Eustace Prep (Cherry Hill, N.J.),

Frank also played some fine basketball for

coach Joe O'Connor. Business major.

Joseph M. Rapczynski

Philadelphia, Pa.

A stable forward who knows how to hit the

boards, 'the Rabbi' averaged 1.0 ppg. as a

reserve frontcourt specialist last year. His

six points vs. Western Kentucky matched his

previous career high of six points (four re-

bounds) set vs. Biscayne as a sophomore.Joe notched 10.0 ppg. and 7.0 rpg. as a

starter for the '70-71 Explorer frosh, after

being named All-Catholic at North Catholic

high (Philadelphia) under coach FrankDougherty. Business major.

Edward W. (Bill) Taylor

Junior 20 6-5 190 Forward

Tuskegee, Ala.

A versatile, sharpshooting forward, Bill

had one of the finest rookie seasons in La

Salle history in 72-73, scoring 17.7 ppg.,

shooting 49.7% (204-414) from the field,

and hitting the double-figure scoring columnin 24 of 25 games. Topping 20 points on

nine different occasions, Billy exceeded 400points (444) in his first varsity year, a feat

which has been accomplished by only five

previous Explorers. The former MVP of the

Central Pennsylvania Catholic league had anoutstanding scholastic career under coach Joe McGlynn at St. Francis Prep

(Spring Grove, Pa.). Accounting major.

Donn was the starting center for coach Al

THE EXPLORERS' 1972-73 SEASON

IN REVIEW

The University of Southern California, New Mexico State, Niagara, Duquesne, West-

ern Kentucky, Canisius, and Villanova, have long been associated with collegiate

basketball prowess across the nation.

But what bound these teams together during 1972-73 was that they were each vic-

tims of Paul Westhead's resurgent La Salle College five. The Explorers, who could

win only six of 25 contests the previous year began their inevitable return to

basketball prominence with a solid 15-10 record in their most recent campaign.

Lacking a big man, Westhead instead used a "Sky Man" in 6-5 senior forward Jim

Crawford. Co-captain Crawford took his rafter-hanging act to a horde of opponentgiants to the tune of 19.6 ppg. and 9.0 rpg. He shot a torrid 53.4% (175-328) from

the field, hit the double figure scoring column in 24 of 25 games, and led his matesin assists with 79.

Crawford's 1213 career points give him ninth place on the Explorer All-Time scor-

ing list, while his 732 career rebounds make him the seventh best boardman at the

college since 1950 (rebound records only exist since 1950).

Flanking Crawford in the other corner position was 6-5 sophomore Billy Taylor.

"Ballet Billy," the shooter of La Salle's frontcourt, notched 17.7 ppg. with a fine

49.7% (204-414) from the field, and 24 of 25 games in double figure scoring.

Taylor's topping of 400 points (444) in a single season is a feat which has only beenduplicated by five previous Explorer rookies (Tom Gola, 504 pts., frosh, 51-52; KenDurrett, 480 pts., soph. 68-69; Jack George, 469 pts., soph, 50-51; Larry Cannon,448 pts., soph, 66-67; and Bobby Fields, 411 pts., junior, 69-70).

Crawford registered over 20 points 13 different times with a career-best 32 tallies

coming vs. Canisius, while Taylor topped 20 points nine times and had a career-

high 26 points vs. Eastern Michigan and Notre Dame.

6-6 junior Joe DiCocco from Upper Darby, Pa., rounded out the La Salle frontline

at the center position. DiCocco (8.7 ppg. -9. 6 rpg.), who battled opposing centers four

and five inches taller with great success, had his season-high game of 27 points and

17 rebounds in the destruction of Villanova.

In the backcourt, 6-0 soph Bobby Jones and 5-10 junior Frank Moffatt provided the

quickness and leadership ability necessary to any successful quintet.

Jones, a blonde-haired flash known to his teammate as 'the snake,' was second

to Crawford in assists with 72, led the club in steals with 71, and found the time to

average 12.4 ppg.

Bordering on the spectacular at times, Jones burned Canisius with 23 points in the

first half, and lists a career-high of 26 points vs. Rider.

Moffatt, the quieter half of the dynamic guard duo, ran the Explorer offense with

precision and cleverness, contributing 4.2 ppg. and solid playmaking.

And it would be an injustice not to mention the late-season heroics of 6-1 junior

Steve Baruffi, whose 17 points led a fantastic Explorer comeback at American Uni-

versity, and who then in his next game proceeded to shut off Villanova's Tom In-

glesby, while pouring 15 points through the hoop himself. Or the early season antics

of 6-0 frosh Charlie Wise, whose defensive expertise frustrated so many opponentsin La Salle's first 14 games.

And the list goes on! Senior co-captain Bill Fox, juniors Frank Doyle, Jim Haggarty,and Joe Rapczynski, and sophomores Steve Wiley and Kevin McBain, who were asmuch a part of this team as any other individuals, contributing time and talent to the

success of the unit.

Color the 1972-73 Explorers a surprise team of the East! They have done what is

necessary to win games, going the deliberate route in a heart-stopping triumph overDuquesne, running the fast break to perfection in a win over Western Kentucky, andshooting with amazing accuracy in the victory over Villanova. Color this La Salle teamexciting, well on their way to basketball's elite circles! But most of all color their

season a success!

La Salle's basketball squad played before a total of 113,204 fans during

the 72-73 campaign for an average of 4528. The Explorers attracted

36,036 spectators in nine road shows (over some 9420 miles) for an

average of 4004, and 77,168 court followers in 16 home battles for an

average of 4823. The La Salle five's largest crowd was 9330 at Notre

Dame's Athletic Convocation Center.

THE LA SALLE

STORY

President, La Salle College

La Salle College, now in its 110th year of service to higher education

and the Philadelphia Community, was founded March 20, 1863 by the

Brothers of the Christian Schools and derives its name from the founder

of the Christian Brothers, St. John Baptist de La Salle.

In 1929, having outgrown three previous Philadelphia locations, the

campus was moved to its present site at 20th and Olney Avenue in the

East Germantown section of the city.

Since 1945, La Salle has experienced dramatic growth. Before the

closing days of the war, the college had an enrollment of less than 500

attending classes in plant facilities valued at only $1.5 million. Today,

6600 day and evening division students attend classes on La Salle's

40-acre campus, appraised at $30 million.

Olney Hall, a $4.4 million, 100,000-square-foot complex opened in

September, 1971, contains 39 classrooms, 15 student seminar and study

rooms, and 107 faculty offices as well as such special-purpose areas as

a planetarium, an amphitheatre, language laboratories and audio-visual

rooms. It houses the liberal arts area departments of English, Education,

History, Languages, Political Science and Sociology.

Hayman Hall, the college's new $4 million physical recreation center

which opened this past September, contains the Joseph Kirk Memorial

Natatorium with separate swimming and diving facilities, an underwater

observation deck, and seats for 1700 spectators. Three regulation-size

basketball courts, a one-twelfth mile indoor suspended track, and areas

for fencing, wrestling, squash, handball, gymnastics and general exercise

are the other features of the complex.

Ten modern residence halls accommodate 800 out-of-town students.

A $2 million, three-story College Union Building, completed in 1959,

includes a Little Theatre as well as dining halls, assembly rooms, ball-

room and other student facilities.

The $2.5 million Holroyd Science Center, opened in 1960, houseslecture rooms and laboratories for study and research in Biology,

Chemistry, Geology, Physics and Psychology. The David Leo LawrenceMemorial Library, built in 1952, contains 175,000 volumes and periodical

files for some 700 journals, and a new library is in the planning stages.

Additional educational areas are located on a 52-acre campus in

Elkins Park and on an 80-acre site in Springfield Township. The ArmyROTC program, initiated in 1950, is available to freshmen, who mayapply for ROTC scholarships for advance studies. Nearly 350 students,

including those enrolled in advanced courses, participate in the program.

La Salle's day and evening divisions offer degree programs in Arts

and Sciences and Business Administration. The 350-member faculty is

composed of Christian Brothers, priests and lay professors. The college

has been co-educational in the evening division since February, 1967and in its day school since September, 1970.
