All Chamber members will receive a ballot to elect new directors to the Chamber Board this month. Members vote to elect 7 new board members each year, and they each serve a three-year term.

A nominating committee assigned by the Chairman of the Board developed the following list of candidates. Members have the option to write-in candidates on the bal-lot, if they choose.

Nominees for the 2013 election include:Sharon Brass Owner, Director of Marketing Services - Kwik Kopy

Business CenterBorn in Amarillo, raised in Dallas, Sharon began man-

aging the printing/word processing department at El Cen-tro College at age 19. By 21, she was traveling the coun-try for Wang Laboratories. Following that, she managed a large computer operation, trained and supported sales & marketing professionals, and later at Compaq, direct-ed marketing teams to globally launch products, manage trade shows, build websites and create collateral. In 1999 she founded Market Dimensions in Houston and in 2004 she opened Parcel Plus, now Kwik Kopy Business Center, in Brenham, with husband, Barry. She continued operat-ing Market Dimensions and since 2007, her marketing team has been operating as part of Kwik Kopy, working with local clients. Sharon has served on the Board for Ro-tary Club of Washington County since 2008 as PR chair. Since 2009, she has led the annual fundraiser, Washington County Demolition Derby. She also volunteers for Main Street Brenham, where she helped plan and open Toubin Park in 2011. After 2 years of historical research, she di-rected the creation of the park’s historical displays and au-thored the book, “The Burning of Brenham.” Sharon has also volunteered for Brenham Heritage Museum, creating an exhibit about the Giddings brothers of Texas. She is now writing her second book on the topic to benefit the Museum. Sharon volunteered with Main Street Brenham to plan and manage the first annual Brenham ISD Local History Day in May 2013, and plans are in the works to continue and expand the program in 2014.

Cathy ColeRealtor/Partner - Heritage Texas Country PropertiesCathy has over two decades of experience buying and

selling private residences, farms and ranches. She has amassed a record of success that includes 30 Top Producer titles, and the South Central Texas Board of REALTORS® recognized Cathy as their first two-time “REALTOR® of the Year 1997 & 2005.” In 2013, she was awarded the People’s Choice Award for Best Realtor. She is a partner in Heritage Texas Country Properties, and a graduate and trainer of Texas Realtors Leadership Program. She has served as Secretary and Vice-Chair of the Texas REALTORS® Land Institute and on the Government Affairs Committee for the National Association of Realtors. She is a founding member and Director of the Texas Land Brokers Network. She has been

a member of Political Involvement Committee Board for the Texas Association of Realtors for five year and serves on the Land Use Committee. She also served on the Tex-as Association of REALTORS®’ Professional Standards Committee for eight years. A dedicated mother and grand-mother, Cathy believes that strong communities begin at home. She volunteers countless hours to charities to help ensure that Washington County and surrounding areas are better places to live and work.

Suzy HankinsOwner/Manager - Ant Street InnBorn and raised in the Texas Hill County, Suzy has

always loved bluebonnets and hot summers. Venturing north for college, she attended Texas Christian Univer-sity in Ft. Worth. (Go Frogs!) There she met her husband, business partner and friend, Keith. After receiving a BBA in marketing from TCU in 1988, she worked for Ameri-can Airlines, married Keith and had two children, Joyce and Tommy. She was blessed to be a stay-at-home mother while her children were growing up. During those years she volunteered and worked with schools and churches teaching, serving and mentoring. In 2006 they moved to another country named Missouri, where she learned Texas hospitality is truly unique and Southern hospitality is a gift. After six years abroad, it was time to return home! Ant Street Inn brought Suzy and Keith to Brenham in 2012 where they now enjoy a quiet home, a busy inn, and lots of amazing things in Washington County.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHTBrenham Clinic Prepares to Paint the Town Pink

Brenham Clinic invites you to wear pink and help raise awareness for breast cancer and its early detection. Join us for the Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours at Brenham Clinic on Thursday, October 17th from 5-7 p.m.

As Brenham Clinic prepares to host the annual “Paint the Town Pink” event, we look back at past celebrations and the diversity of those who participated and realize that breast cancer affects us all. Dr. Jeff Stoltenberg probably said it best when he stated, “If you haven’t yet been touched by this horrible disease, at some point in your life, you probably will.” Great physicians like Dr. Stoltenberg, who are honest about the reality of breast cancer, join together with patients to fight it. In order to fight effectively, you need certain tools at your disposal.

Brenham Clinic offers an impressive weapon in the battle against breast cancer…digital mammography and same-day reports. Digital technology allows the medical staff at Brenham Clinic to provide mammograms with sharper and more precise images than traditional mam-

mography. If ultrasound technology is needed, we can do it during the same visit. And to eliminate the anxiety of waiting for results, board-certified radiologist John McIntire, M.D., will provide a preliminary interpreta-tion, pending comparison to previous films, the same day. Dr. McIntire has been serving the Brenham Clinic for the past 30 years, and with his vast experience, he is able to discuss each scan, answer questions and provide referrals to physicians if further assistance is needed.

Brenham Clinic and College Station Medical Center are proud to invest in a service that promotes the health, safety and welfare of all women in Washington County and surrounding areas. To schedule your mammogram, simply call 979-836-6153. Please make it a point to join us in October as we “Paint the Town Pink!”

Leadership Team Building

Understanding and imple-menting different leadership and communication styles was the focus of Leadership Wash-ington County’s September session. Kurt Podeszwa from Camp For All led the day-long workshop.

The day was full of activi-ties to focus on team-building skills. The class was led through several exercises which helped each participant recognize their strengths and weaknesses in or-der to focus on growth. Through-out the day class members were reminded that leadership is proactive and effective leaders sometimes emerge due to their placement within an organiza-tion, not necessarily due to their position within an organization.

Chamber-CVB staff member Judy Hyman is part of the new Leadership class. She stated that her favorite part of this session was touring Camp For All.

As she explained, “Seeing the entire Camp For All property and learning how the founders came up with the plan and im-plementation was really amaz-ing. It’s obvious that the staff really has a heart for providing a unique camping and retreat ex-perience for children and adults with challenging illnesses and special needs. Campers learn what they can do at Camp For All, not what they can’t do.”

This year’s class will also conduct a Class Project. At their opening session, they brain-stormed over a dozen possible projects. They conducted re-

search since then, and at Camp For All they heard presenta-tions then voted on their proj-ect choice. Assisting with the Camptown Cemetery Clean-Up Project is what this class will fo-cus on this year. They will work with Doug Price at the Brenham Heritage Museum to determine specific project goals.

Leadership Washington County is a program of the Washington County Chamber aimed at educating and moti-vating current and future lead-ers. In the next session on Octo-ber 8, the participants will take learn and explore Washington County’s local history. The His-tory session will be facilitated by Mike Baker from MIC Group (LWC Class of 2007) and Page Michel (LWC Class of 2006).

Leadership participants engage in “Toe Tag” where participants clasp hands and try to “tag” the other persons toe while not getting “tagged” themselves.

Class members from left to right James Baker, Darren huckert, Jill Wallace, Pam Muegge, Becky Ballard, Brice Milliorn, hannah Roemer and Jenny Van Dorf are saluting as Kurt Podeszwa gives the command, “Captain on Deck!”

Participants walked into a maze then put on blind-folds and were told to find their way out. Class members could ask for help and many did. A few people tried to find their way out by themselves.

The group works together to toss as many objects into containers within a certain amount of time. Some group members were the “tossers” and some were the “retrievers.”

From left to right, hannah Roemer, Jenny Van Dorf and James Meyer admire the costumes that campers can choose from for their starring roles.

Spotters, are you ready for Christina Koehn to do her trust fall?

Set in the 1890s, a seaside resort in England plays host to a set of anarchic twins, their stun-ning sister and their highly unusual feminist mother. The Clandon family has just returned from 18 years in Madeira and the children have decided it’s time that their mother tells them who their father is, or was. What follows is a classic comedy with chance encounters, confused iden-tities and a reunion of a long-separated family – but not without a wrinkle or two!

Shows run through Oct. 13 with Thursday performances at 7:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday performances at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 4 p.m. For more information, call 979-830-8358 or visit www.unitybrenham.org.
