Early life • Was born Augusta Ada Byron on

December 10th 1815• Father-Famous Poet George Gordon• Mom studied math and wanted Ada to

study more useful subjects such as math and science.

• Ada contracted measles and was paralyzed, at sixteen able to walk with crutches

Page 3: Lady Lovelace

People Who Helped Make Ada• Her mother had Ada privately tutored

in order for her to advance in her studies.

• The tutors included: William Freud- Social Reformer Mary Somerville- Science writer and Augustus de Morgan- Mathematician.

Page 4: Lady Lovelace

The Main Man• Ada was introduced to Charles Baggage-A Lucasian

math professor at Cambridge in 1833.• Baggage had already began to develop the

Difference Engine- Which was suppose to an advance calculating machine, but he did not finish it.

• Later on he became interested in the Analytical Engine. (The 1st general all purpose computer)

• No one would support his interest. When Louis Menebrea wrote a memoir it included details about the Analytical Engine. One Problem…the memoir was in French. This is were Ada came in. She was able to translate it into English.

The Birth of Computer Software

• After Ada translated the memoir Baggage told her to add her own notes. She became infatuated with the idea and suggested that Baggage write the plan to translate Bernoulli’s numbers. This plan became the first computer program. The symbol for Bernoulli’s numbers look like the image below, look familiar??

What Exactly is a Computer Program?

• A computer program is a set of ordered instructions that allows computers to perform specific task.

• Most computer programmers speak mechanical language.

• Mechanical Language- Is a language for a CPU that can be used without having to be translated.

• Programs can be downloaded on a CD

And the Award Goes To….

• Women were not giving credit for technology and science breakthroughs because they were thought of as being the home maker who only takes care of kids and the house household.

• Not only did Ada develop the first computer program, she helped make a name for women in the “World of men.”

Books Written About Ada

• Ada: The Enchantress of Numbers• Ada Lovelace: The Computer Wizards of

Victorian England• The Bride of Science : Reason Romance and

Byron’s Daughter• She was also portrayed in the film Convincing

Ada, directed by Lynn Leeson.

Honors and Awards • In 1979, a software language was developed by the

U .S. Department of Defense which is used to program missiles, planes and submarines was named in her honor.

• Starting in 1998, the British Computer Society has awarded a medal in her name and in 2008 begin an annual competition for women students in computer science.

• Ada Lovelace day- First took place March 24th 2009. This is an international day to celebrate the achievements of women in science ,technology , engineering and math. This year Ada Love lace is Oct. 7th.

Death

• Ada became addicted to prescription drugs, opium, morphine and laudanum.

• She also developed a gambling problem, gambling her family jewels away twice. The 1st time her mom got the them back.

Conclusion• Without the wonderful work of Ada, we would not be

able to do the following:

• Complete Castle Learning• Play computer games• Use Facebook• E-mail granny in California

The great invention of the computer software allows us to be able to live everyday life with the use of computers.
