President’s Column Dear LGS Members, The November meeting of LGS will be held jointly with SIPES Wednesday the 19th at the Petroleum Club from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM. Kathy Haggar will discuss the use of lightning strike data in the exploration for hydrocarbons. Within two weeks LGS will receive a share of the proceeds from hosting the GCAGS 2014 Annual Convention. The exact amount is not known at this time. In keeping with the LGS mission of supporting the University of Louisiana’s pursuit of the science of geology and the students who are preparing for careers in the earth sciences, the society will donate a portion of the funds to UL. The LGS Board has asked members of the UL faculty to apprise the Board of its priorities. The LGS Audit Committee under the leadership of Treasurer Barry Gidman has completed an audit. Barry will present the committee’s findings to the membership at the November luncheon. Many thanks to Andrew Vodicka, Jim Dungan, Da-vid Fugitt, and Samantha Leone for serving on the Audit Com-mittee. The Board is in the initial stages of planning a spring field trip. Details will be forthcoming. Congratulations to LGS Director Joey Grimball and his wife Nicole for the birth of their son, Briggs Jackson Grimball, weighing in at 6 pounds, 9 ounces. Keep warm. See you at the luncheon. Craig Glassinger

NOVEMBER LUNCHEON PRESENTATION

Using Resistivity from Lightning Databases in Exploration

Kathleen S. Haggar Dynamic Measurement, LLC

Abstract Lightning occurs everywhere. Where lightning strikes and the at-tributes of lightning strikes are related to terralevis (shallow earth) cur-rents. Both lightning strikes and lightning strike attributes cluster, based on geologic features in the first 20,000 feet of the earth. The skin depth of lightning strikes is measured in centimeters. However, terrale-vis and telluric currents vary at the depths which are of interest to hy-drocarbon exploration. Because subsurface geology does not change that rapidly, the primary geologic causes driving where different types of lightning hits the earth is fairly consistent across human time frames. Therefore lightning density and lightning attributes derived from the 16 years of available data can be stacked, somewhat like seismic data, in order to improve signal and decrease noise. Clusters on the resulting lightning density and lightning attribute maps create lineaments that are somewhat consistent across different attribute maps. Resulting maps define surface projections of fault and stratigraphic impact on terralevis currents. Lightning density and attrib-ute maps can be created anyplace on the planet, using exclusively li-censed satellite derived lightning databases. In addition, the electrical information in lightning databases enables calculation of resistivity vol-umes, via patent pending algorithms. Animations through a resistivity volume created over the Houston Metropolitan Area will be shown to demonstrate the resolution and value of resistivity volumes. These resistivity volumes can be created anyplace onshore in the continental United States and Canada, which is where there are ground based sensors, and out to the shelf break, or about 300 ft water depths. The lightning database derived resistivity volumes can be interpolated to be at the same line and trace spacing as any 3D seismic survey within this area. These resistivity volumes can be overlaid on the seismic vol-

umes in workstations, in the same way velocity volumes are overlaid. However, instead of showing velocity based characteristics related to lithology and fluids, they show the rock property resistivity. Because lightning occurs everywhere, these resistivity volumes al-low a first pass “filling-in of the gaps” between 2D seismic lines, be-tween well control, and between 3D seismic surveys. The lateral reso-lution of lightning derived resistivity traces is 100–300 ft. The ohm-m calculations show resistivity concentrations starting at about -1500 ft and going down as deep as 20,000 ft. Resistivity concentrations show faulting, hydrocarbon migration pathways, and traps. The vertical reso-lution of lightning derived resistivity data is far less than the vertical resolution on a resistivity log. Vertical calibration and ohm-m scale calibration of resistivity volumes to well logs are a current focus of DML geoscientists. This presentation will share a status report of DML’s most recent work. Combining the interpretations of resistivity volumes with surface projection from various lightning attributes de-rives a geologic framework for aquifer, hydrocarbon, and mineral ex-ploration, as well as for geohazard analysis.

Biography Kathleen “Kathy” Haggar is a native of New Orleans but has been steadily migrating north and west through Slidell to Baton Rouge. She earned her BS degree in Earth Science from UNO and got a job as a “Bug Picker” for Chevron, working the Miocene section of south Loui-siana. Later she received her first MS degree in Geology from Tulane, was promoted to geologist, serving in exploration, geophysics, and pro-duction for 16 years. She packaged out of Chevron during the great downsizing of the late 1980s. Jim Hartman hired her to work for Greenhill Petroleum on old fields Chevron had just sold to Green-hill. After Greenhill’s Metairie office closed in 1993, she started a wet-land consulting company, Riparian, Inc. She earned a second MS de-gree in Biology from Southeastern in late 2000. In 2013, while attend-ing the GCAGS in New Orleans, she met Roice Nelson, one of the three co-founders of Dynamic Measurement, LLC. DML had recently secured an exclusive license of lighting data for geophysical investiga-tions. This new direction with Dynamic Measurement marks her return to the O&G business. Understanding more about lightning makes it much less terrifying and actually quite interesting, especially consider-ing its potential as totally new geophysical data type.

(continued from page 9) The technical program is anticipating 100 or more talks in concurrent sessions. The talks and poster sessions will occupy two full days on the third level of the George R. Brown convention center, Sept. 21–22, 2015 (Monday and Tues-day). Check the convention website www.gcagshouston.com (and later www.gcags2015.org) for more information on contacting all the volunteers and log on to the latest news as the convention planning continues from now till mid-2015. Convention registration will open in August 2015. There are other projects initiated by GCAGS that deserve mention. There will be a GCAGS Transactions publication of all the talks and posters at the 2015 convention. This editor of the 2015 Transactions is HGS Past-President, Steve Levine ([email protected]). GCSSEPM Co-Editor will be Patricia Santogrossi, past HGS Bulletin Editor. In addition, GCAGS has a peer-reviewed technical journal called the GCAGS Journal that publishes full length geosciences papers each year in hard copy and online as pdfs. The 2015 GCAGS Journal Editor is HGS Past-President and former HGS Bulletin Editor, Barry Katz. Geoscientists will need to submit a 600 word abstract detailing their proposed Journal paper by Dec. 2, 2014, to be included in the 2015 GCAGS Journal. Contact Barry Katz at [email protected] for more information.
