HEAD LICE POLICY

Parents and guardians need to check their children for lice and nits even if the most common symptoms of itching and scratching are not present.

If lice or nits are found, check other family members, treat

infected members and home, remove nits and notify the school. Lake County Schools has a NO NIT POLICY; children may not

attend school if nits remain in their hair after treatment. Any child that suspected of having lice or nits will be sent home

with directions for treating the child and home. Children will be allowed to return to school after treatment and all

nits have been removed. The student should be treated and returned to school the

following day, and should not be out of school for more than two days.

If absent for more than two days due to head lice it will be

considered an UNEXCUSED absence. Students who are not picked up from school must be separated

from the other students.

Facts about Head Lice

After the female louse mates, she lays four or five eggs (nits). In seven to ten days the eggs (nits) hatch. These eggs mature and mate; the cycle or re-infestation begins again. A single louse can lay as many as 150 eggs in 30 days. 30 days is the life span of a louse. Head lice may change color due to the level of blood content from the human host. Color varies: White, gray, red or dark brown. It is imperative that all nits are picked, pulled or clipped from the child’s hair, even after using the lice treatment or oil treatment (it does not kill all nits). All nits found on the hair are always considered alive and must be removed. Remember that the treatment does not kill all the nits and they can hatch as late as 10 days after treatment. Secondary infections could develop on a child’s scalp if head lice infestation is not treated promptly. Caution: Products used for Head Lice, may aggravate Asthma and Allergies and can provoke serious reactions in highly sensitive children. Lice sprays are not recommended for home treatment. They can provoke Asthma attacks as well as allergic reactions in some children. Other members of the household that have chronic lung or other medical problems may have increased illness episodes when lice sprays are used.

HEAD LICE PROTOCOL PREVENT A HEAD LICE INFESTATION

1. Use Head and Shoulders shampoo twice weekly leaving it on head for 5

minutes. For some reason, lice don’t like it.

2. CHECK YOUR CHILD’S HEAD AT LEAST THREE TIMES A WEEK ROUTINELY. IF YOUR CHILD HAS HAD FREQUENT INFESTATIONS, CHECK DAILY. CHECK FOR NITS OUT IN THE SUNSHINE OR IN A WELL LIGHTED AREA.

WHO CAN GET HEAD LICE: 1. Anyone. Some people are more susceptible due to hair type, age or activities. 2. Head lice prefer a clean head and clean hair. It is easier to grasp the hair while

they lay their eggs. However, they will set up housekeeping in unclean hair if that’s all that is available.

TRANSMISSION: 1. Head to head contact is the most likely source of lice transmission. 2. Sharing anything that is put on the head or in the hair. This includes hats,

combs, brushes, barrettes, ball helmets, and band hats. 3. Throwing personal items in a heap such as clothes, hats, or book bags. 4. Touching heads together when sharing information, sitting closely with hair

touching. 5. Coming in contact with infested upholstered car seats or furniture. 6. Students and staff with long hair should wear it as close to the head as possible. IDENTIFY A HEAD LICE INFESTATION: 1. Have someone at home routinely check the head, looking specifically for live

bugs or eggs (nits). 2. Constant scratching of the head MAY be a sign. If the child has been treated

recently, they will probably have an itchy scalp. 3. Anyone who is scratching their head constantly should be checked to rule out an

infestation or to identify other conditions such as dandruff. 4. Sometimes the child’s head may not itch until the infestation is severe and it will

be more difficult to get rid of them.

SAFE TREATMENT 1. Use a recommended over-the-counter product for lice treatment. Some lice

products should only be used once in a 2-month period due to studies showing that overuse can cause illness and possible brain damage in children. A few products on the market are considered safe to use more frequently. All products do not kill the nits. These must be pulled, combed, or clipped from strands of hair. For children 2 years of age and under consult the child’s physician before treatment.

2 If lice infestation and nits continue to be a problem after treatment, the following

steps may be followed:

a. Apply one of these oils to hair liberally (saturate hair).

1. Olive oil 2. Liquid vegetable oil

b. Cover hair for at least 3 to 8 hours, never leaving child unattended.

c. Rinse out with warm water and shampoo. You may have to shampoo

several times to remove the oil. All oil will need to be removed to check the hair for remaining nits.

d. Comb and pick out every nit from the hair until they are ALL gone! A

strong metal comb is more effective than the plastic ones found in the lice treatment.

3 Lice treatment does not kill all nits - they MUST be manually removed. When a

child has been recently treated and only nits are seen, it is not necessary to do complete house cleaning the second time. Concentrate your time on NIT removal.

UNSAFE TREATMENTS: 1. Agricultural grade pesticides 2. Kerosene / gasoline 3. Flea shampoo, soap, dip 4. Insect sprays 5. Alcohol 6. Excessive exposure to pediculocidal agents (Rid, Nix, etc.) 7. Vaseline WHO CAN CHECK FOR HEAD LICE: 1. Parents responsibility 2. School based personnel 3. School health nurses 4. Health Department nurses DECONTAMINATING THE HOUSE:

1. All persons in contact with the infested child should be checked and treated if lice are found. If nits only are found the nits need to be combed or pulled from the hair. (Children 2 years and under, consult the doctor for treatment).

2. Clothing and linen used by the infested person must be washed in hot water and

dried at high temperature in clothes dryer. If you do not have hot water or a dryer, hang the items outside in hot sun or cold for at least 48 hours.

3. Upholstered furniture, rugs, carpets, and bedding of person infected should be

vacuumed. The vacuum bag should be discarded in a tightly sealed plastic bag and thrown in an outside garbage bin.

4. Combs, brushes, and other hair care items should be soaked in hot water 5. Backpacks and headgear such as bike or sports helmets should be washed or

thoroughly vacuumed. 6. Pets do not have to be screened or treated; they do not get infested with head

lice. 7. We do not recommend the use of lice sprays; they are expensive and have been

known to cause respiratory problems and allergic reaction for some children and adults.

FOLLOW-UP PROCEDURE: 1. Parent accompanies child to school 2. School personnel or school nurse checks child for nits and lice.

a. If nits or lice are present, parent will take student home.

b. If head is free of nits and lice, child may return to class and parent is encouraged to continue to check child’s head daily for 14 days in case of possible re-infestation. Parent continues frequent periodic head checks throughout the school year.

If at any time nits or lice are found, student is to be sent home.

Protocolo Piojos

2. REVISE LA CABEZA DE SU HIJO/A AL MENOS 3 VECES EN SEMANA

RUTINARIAMENTE. SI SU HIJO/A HA TENIDO INFESTACION FRECUENTEMENTE ENTONCES REVISE DIARIAMENTE. VERIFIQUE LOS PIOJOS EN EL SOL O EN UN AREA BIEN ALUMBRADA.

¿QUIEN PUEDE RECIBIR PIOJOS?:

1. Cualquier persona.
