Rolf Korver was looking for a change of pace. He found it in rural Ste-phens County on the shores of Lake Hartwell. “I was a full-time program-mer,” said Korver, who hails from Th e Netherlands (Hol-land) in western Europe. Korver is now the propri-etor of Dutch Bait, a store located on Jenkins Ferry Road not far from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers boat ramp at the end of the road. Th e shop has functioned as a bait store under several previous owners. John Van Pelt purchased the store in 2004 from the former owner, Sted Isbell. Th e store closed after Van

Pelt lost a battle against liver cancer. Korver was friends with the Van Pelt family. He married the former Donna Van Pelt after her husband died and moved to Stephens County in the spring of 2014 — reopening the bait store in early March, 2015. “We are getting the old customers back,” Korver said, adding that most of their current customers through the fi rst two months had pur-chased bait at the store before it closed. Th e bait sold includes minnows of all sizes held in temperature regulated water at 54 degrees Fahrenheit. Dutch Bait has large and small worms also and have

started a worm farm for future use and stock the store with bait. Th e Korvers also plan to of-fer crickets, though none were in stock as of April 30. Korver, his wife and teen-age stepchildren, Austin and Amber Van Pelt, also make lures used by fi shermen. Although he sells bait for a living, Korver said he’s not much of a fi sherman himself. “I tried (fi shing) many years

ago, but these days I just don’t have the time for it,” he said, adding he continues computer coding part-time in addition to operating the bait store. Th e Korvers also sell snacks for their clientele and run a small boat storage facility on the property. Dutch Bait is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays.Th e store is closed on Tues-days.

The traditional earthworm bait also is available at Dutch Bait. The store is located on Jenkins Ferry Road, not far from the shores of Lake Hartwell.

Natalie Sanford sits in a swing overlooking the river at Th e Sandbar as kayakers come fl oating in at the end of their fi ve-mile journey. Natalie is not just wast-ing the day away on a sunny Th ursday afternoon. As man-ager, this is her job. Th is is her livelihood. It is also the family business with her father, Gerald Carey, owning the property. For 17 years the family has tried to transform Th e Sand-bar into a family-friendly venue where people can enjoy the weather, the river and just get away for a while. “We are not a bar,” said Natalie. “I think people have the impression we are, but we’re not. We’ve tried to create an environment where

people can feel comfortable taking their entire family.” While there may be people drinking alcoholic bever-ages on the property, Natalie emphasized that visitors won’t see those who over-indulge. Th e Sandbar has seen sev-eral drastic changes over the past 17 years (there was once a restaurant but it has been closed for the past year or so), but Natalie believes word of their eff orts to off er quality leisure activities for the sur-rounding area has not reached locals. While Th e Sandbar has rented kayaks for the past few years, their newest attraction, and the largest investment in the business, has been the addition of zip-lines. Yes, that type of zip-line.And yes, right here in Elbert County.

Th e zip-line course consists of 11 lines ranging from a short glide of 100 yards or so to the fi nale, a 1,200-foot drop down the side of a hill and across the bend in the river. Th e average-sized person can attain speeds of around 35 mph on the faster lines, said Natalie. At peak height the highest zip line suspends the guest about 100 feet above the ground. Th e zip-lines were installed by a professional company that specializes in the indus-try and every employee who accompanies guests has been fully trained and earned certi-fi cation through the Asso-ciation for Challenge Course Technology. When asked about the pri-mary motivation for install-ing zip-lines at Th e Sandbar, Natalie went right to the heart of the matter.

“Th is is such beautiful country, we wanted people to be able to experience it with the least possible impact,” she said. “Our course crosses Mill Shoal Creek seven or eight times.” While the cost of zip lining is not cheap, the prices at Th e Sandbar are very competitive with those in surrounding areas, and considering the amount of time and gas one saves by staying in the area, Th e Sandbar looks like a pretty good deal. Th ere are currently two price-points. Th e full 11-line course is $79 while a shorter 6-line course is $59. Th e price includes equipment, training and a professional guide. Natalie said they like to keep groups to eight or less due to the size of the platforms, though they can easily break larger groups into smaller ones in order to ac-commodate any-sized group

(with advance notice). Reservations are highly recommended for anyone interested in the zip-lines and with the summer season just around the corner, could be-come necessary during week-ends and holidays if Natalie’s vision comes to fruition. Th e Sandbar opens at 9 a.m. on weekends and 10 a.m. on weekdays and is open seven days a week. Th e last kayak run launches at 3 p.m. and the last zip-line group leaves Th e Sandbar at 5 p.m. For safety reasons, there are a few rules or limitations for the zip-lines. Participants must be at least 10-years-old and weigh at least 70 pounds. Participants cannot weigh more than 250 pounds. While there are no mini-mums for the kayaks, boaters cannot weigh more than 300 pounds.

Kayakers are taken up-stream and fl oat downstream the entire way. For those who want to just get away from it all and spend a couple of days kayaking and fl ying through the air, Th e Sandbar also off ers two primitive cabins (no kitchens) as well. While food is no longer prepared at Th e Sandbar, they do off er snacks and drinks, as well as T-shirts, river shoes, sunglasses and dry boxes. Th e Sandbar is located at 3435 King Hall Mill Road, which is just off Highway 172 a short drive from Bowman. On a sunny Saturday af-ternoon, Austin Smith wasn’t playing baseball, shooting hoops or goofi ng off with friends as most 13 year-olds would be doing. He was washing cars. And not to make money for a new video game either. Austin and a few friends were washing cars to make money to donate to the World Epi-lepsy Foundation. It is a cause close to the

seventh-grader’s heart as his little sister, Mayleigh, 5, has just been diagnosed with epilepsy. Mayleigh’s symptoms began in the fall. “She had a seizure in Octo-ber and we thought it was just a freak thing,” Jennifer Smith, Mayleigh’s mother, said dur-ing an interview after the car wash with her little girl and Austin at her side. Mayleigh had another seizure Jan. 22, however, and it lasted almost 30 minutes.

Jennifer, a longtime resident of Carnesville, took her to their pediatrician and was told Mayleigh had diabetes. A visit to the endocrinolo-gist negated that diagnosis however when that doctor told Jennifer it was not diabe-tes. Needing answers, and with Mayleigh having another long seizure on Feb. 6, a frantic Jennifer started looking for a neurologist. “We had been told it would take us six months to a year to

be able to see a neurologist,” Jennifer said. “We didn’t want to wait that long.” When Jennifer called Scot-

tish Rite’s Ascend Pediatric Neurology group, they didn’t ask her to wait, they gave Mayleigh an appointment immediately. “Th ey are wonderful,” Jen-nifer enthused of the Scot-tish Rite doctors. “I can’t say enough good things about them.” Doctors at Scottish Rite did an EEG on Mayleigh and on March 12 diagnosed her with epilepsy. Th ey put her on Kepra to help control the seizures and scheduled an MRI. “In addition to the long sei-zures she has had, Mayleigh also has petit mal seizures. She has the seizures at night when she sleeps and she usu-ally throws up after she has them,” Jennifer said. “I have her sleeping with me at night now so I can make sure she is OK.” Anyone looking at the

chubby-cheeked, energetic, adorable little girl would never know she has any medi-cal problems whatsoever. Mayleigh is happy, bright-eyed, alert and ready to play. As with most 5-year-olds, she can’t sit still. “Can I color?” Mayleigh sings as she twirls, her sun-kissed brown hair fl ying. “I like to color!” Her brother, Austin, watches over her, smiling at her antics and making sure she is OK. “When we found out Mayleigh’s diagnosis, Austin wanted to do something for her,” Jennifer said, smiling at her tall, dark-haired son. “It was his idea to do a car wash to make money for the World Epilepsy Foundation to give back and help others. We let him decide everything.” Which was why Austin was working washing cars on a Saturday afternoon instead of

hanging out with his friends or playing baseball. “I am planning to do a 5K, too,” Austin said determined-ly. “I have some of the plans made. I have the date set for May 9 but I haven’t got the location yet.” In addition to his car wash, which made $300, and the anticipated 5K, Austin has a GoFund page on Facebook for those who wish to make

donations. As for Mayleigh, she is happy and enjoys playing with her best friend, who also has epilepsy, her brother and her baby sister, Haleigh, 2. Jennifer hopes that there will be a cure for her little girl in the near future. Austin hopes so, too, which is why he keeps on helping and giving back any way he can.

Th e second Franklin County Citizen Leader photo contest drew more than 180 entries. From that, three winners were picked – Judy Hulsey for fi rst place, Crystal Roberts for second place and Derrick Gable for third place. Photographers – amateur and professional – were in-vited to enter as many photos as they wanted in the contest. Winners were picked through a two-stage judging process. Photos were renamed with numbers so that no names were on the photos for judg-ing. Th e staff of the Frank-lin County Citizen Leader looked through the entries and voted for any photo they thought was a “good photo.”

Th irty-six photos received at least two votes and were named fi nalists in the contest. Th e fi nalist photos were then sent to Th e Hartwell Sun and Th e Elberton Star. Judges at those papers were asked to rank the fi nalists from best (1) to least best (36). Each ranking for each photo was then calculated. Th e photo with the least composite score was declared the winner, followed by the next lowest score and so on. It was Hulsey’s second con-secutive win in the contest. She won last year’s contest with another photo of a hum-mingbird. Hulsey, Roberts and Gable all had other photos named fi nalists in the contest. Hulsey will receive a $100

prize and a year’s subscription to the newspaper. Roberts will receive $50 and a year’s subscription. Gable will receive $25 and a year’s subscription.

Th e winners and many of the fi nalists were printed in the April 30, 2015, issue of the Franklin County Citizen Leader.

Th e Pre-Fourth celebration on June 26 and 27, is one of the biggest family weekends of the year with a variety of activities. •Th e 18th-annual Dancin’ on Depot Street Dance will be hosted by the Hartwell Downtown Development Authority from 6-11 p.m., Friday. Music will be presented by Still Cruzin’ from 7-11 p.m. Gates open at 6 p.m. on Carolina Street. Admission is $5 and children 5 and under are admitted free. Food ven-dors and a children’s area will be available. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs for a night of music and fun under

the stars. •On Saturday, the Lake Hartwell Olympic and Sprint Triathlon will be held at Big Oaks Recreation Area at 8 a.m.

Th e Olympic Distance will include a swim in Lake Hartwell. Th e course is 1500 meters clockwise with buoys being placed at 150-200 me-ter intervals. Th e bike course

is a 40k (24.8 miles) loop on rolling hills. Th e run is 10k (6.2 miles) and is an out and back course, moderately shaded, fairly fl at, with aid stations each mile. For the Sprint Triathlon, the swim is 500 meters clock-wise with buoys being placed at 100-200 meter intervals. Th e bike course is a 20k (12.4 miles) loop on rolling hills. Th e run is a 5k (3.1 miles) and is an out and back course, moderately shaded, fairly fl at, with aid stations each mile In addition to the triath-lons, there will be Duathlons for the Olympic and Sprint. Looking for something your family can do this sum-mer that takes only one day and can be fun for everyone? Try a road trip to one of the recreational areas ad-ministered by the U.S. Forest Service. Th ere are many in northeast Georgia and upstate South Carolina. Here’s one that includes some exercise that will be rewarded with the sights and sounds of three waterfalls.

Raven Cliff Wilderness Area Trail: Located about six miles north of Helen in White County Th e Raven Cliff s Wilderness Area Trail follows Dodd Creek through the wilderness area to a

massive dark bluff near the headwaters some 2.5 miles from the parking area. Th e wilderness area has more than 9,600 acres in its boundaries and is only accessed by hiking trails. Th e area has abundant wildlife including black bears.

Th e trail is moderate in nature with only a few places where hikers are forced to scramble over roots or tackle steep in-clines. Th e trail closely follows Dodd Creek up to the falls. On the path there are several additional waterfalls including

two that are visually strik-ing. Th e trail rarely meanders more than 50-75 feet from the creek and there is a wide variety of vegetation including mountain laurel and rhodo-dendron. Many hikers report numerous rhododendron in bloom during mid-summer. Th e approach to the cliff s at the end of the trail is a high-light of the trip. A scramble among loose dirt and stones is required to get the best view of the cliff s and falls, but is manageable (the Laws were able to do so with some moderate exertion). Th e water rushes through a split in the rocks and splashes down in cascades to a waist deep pool at the bottom. Many hikers take advantage of the pool and wade through it at the end of their hike.

Take a scenic ride and enjoy the rich history that Hart County has to off er with the University of Georgia/Hart County Archway Partner-ship’s historic driving tour of Hart County entitled, “Th e Spokes of History.” According to historic driving tour committee chair Nancy Clark, the driving tour is an extension of the histori-cal downtown walking tour that was founded in 2011. “We thought it would be nice to have an extension of the walking tour and show-case important sites through-out the county,” said Clark. “We have a lot of major locations on the tour and we may fi nd others to add over time.” Th e concept for a driving tour began in Sept. 2013. Many sessions followed to brainstorm the original list of sites and condense that list into a manageable tour. Th e same volunteer com-

mittee that brought the walk-ing tour to life, with support from the Archway Partner-ship, decided to continue working together to create the

driving tour as well. “We’re focused on histori-cal preservation and tourism. Growing tourism is our goal and to do that, we need to

give people something to do,” said Clark. Hart County Archway Partnership coordinator Ilka McConnell said the driving tour project will highlight the rich history of Hart County. “Th e driving tour ties together historical sites and tourism attractions through-out the county, including historic school sites, the Hart County Quilt Trail, as well as properties listed on the Na-tional Register of Historic,” said McConnell. “It’s a great way to discover some of our local gems that you might otherwise not know about.” Committee member Richard Sanders believes the driving tour, like the walking tour, is a good component for Hartwell and Hart County. “Any opportunity for us to highlight places or events of interest that visitors might not otherwise notice is a good thing,” said Sanders. Th e committee includes representatives of local organizations including Hart

Th e Hartwell Region is full of historical lore, while much of it is inherited from the Cherokee Indians and from settlers who pioneered the area. Many local streams, riv-ers and recreation areas were named after Indians. Hartwell Dam was built by the U.S. Army Corps between 1955 and 1962 for the purposes of hydropower, fl ood control, and navigation. Lake Hartwell is named af-

ter the American Revolution-ary War fi gure Nancy Hart. Hart lived in the Georgia Frontier, and it was her devo-tion to freedom that helped make her name a common-place in Hartwell History. Hart Couty, Hartwell, Lake Hartwell and Hart State Park all have her name. Other historic fi gures were Andrew Pickens and John C. Caloun, were both prominent statesman from South Caro-lina William Bartram also traveled the area looking for diff erent vegetation types and plant species. Lake Hartwell is a man made reservoir which borders

Georgia and South Caro-lina on the Savannah River. Th e lake was created by the Hartwell Dam and consists of nearly 56,000 acres of water with a shoreline of 962 miles. Th e Flood Control Act of 1950 authorized the Hartwell Dam as the second unit in the development of the Savannah River Basin. Th e estimated cost was $68.4 million, which was based off of the 1948 price levels. Th e original project pro-vided a gravity-type concrete dam which was 2,415 feet long with embankments, which would be 6,050 feet on the Georgia side and 3,935

feet on the South Carolina side. Th e reservoir covers 56,500 acres and involved the reloca-tion of three sections of rail-road which totals two miles. Th e raising of two railroad bridges, construction of six sections of new state high-ways also had an eff ect on the original project. Th e large lake that was cre-ated by the waters in Hartwell have been used extensively for recreational use. Th e number of visitors to Lake Hartwell has increased regu-larly from around 750,000 in 1962 to over 9.6 million in the 2000s.

CARNESVILLE – Th e city of Carnesville is sporting some new, colorful, themed benches this year, courtesy of Franklin County Middle

School TSA members and eighth grade art students in Elizabeth Debban’s class. Th e benches, some in front of the Franklin County Reg-istrar’s building, some in front of the Franklin County Tax Assessor’s building, a couple at the new Carnesville Com-

munity Center and also in front of Carnesville City Hall, are not only decorative, but a good place to sit and enjoy the city scenes as well. “Th is is the second time we have had benches painted and constructed,” Carnesville Mayor Harris Little said. “We

had 12 done last year and another 10 this year.” Little said the city pro-vides all of the materials and members of the FCMS TSA construct the benches while the FCMS art students pro-vide all the decoration. Th is year’s benches each had

a theme. “Small groups of my eighth grade art students, anywhere from three to seven in a group, chose a theme, de-signed it and then painted the benches,” Debban said. Debban said the students

chose themes they thought would appeal to the commu-nity. “Th ey chose themes in faith, Georgia outdoor hunt-ing, humorous, a history of Carnesville, a decorative one with gold leaf and an Ameri-

can themed bench for those who had served in the Armed Forces,” she explained. It was a fun and educa-tional project for students and Little said, “a way for the city to support the school system.” “It is a good way to show

pride in the community,” Little added. Little said folks should tour the downtown area and get a look at the new benches and “sit a spell” to enjoy Car-nesville’s quaint charm and picturesque beauty.

Southern Fried Catfi sh

8 (5 to 6-ounce) catfi sh fi llets,

skin removed

Salt

Crab boil seasoning (recom-

mended: Old Bay)

4 cups all-purpose fl our

1 cup cornmeal

Oil, for frying

Heat a fryer or a deep pot halfway fi lled with oil to 350 degrees F. Sprinkle both sides of each catfi sh with salt and crab boil seasoning. In a sepa-

rate bowl, combine the fl our and the cornmeal. Dredge the catfi sh in the fl our mixture and place in fryer. Deep fry for approximately 7 to 8 minutes until done. Drain on paper towels.

Fried Hushpuppies

6 cups peanut oil

1 1/2 cups self-rising cornmeal

1/2 cup self-rising fl our

1/2 tsp. baking soda

1/2 tsp. salt

1 small onion, chopped

1 cup buttermilk

1 egg, lightly beaten

Using a deep pot, preheat oil for frying to 350 degrees F.Using a mixing bowl, stir together the cornmeal, fl our, baking soda, and salt. Stir in the onion. In a small bowl, stir

together the buttermilk and egg. Pour the buttermilk mix-ture into the dry ingredients and mix until blended. Drop the batter, 1 tsp. at a time, into the oil. Dip the spoon in a glass of water after each hush-puppy is dropped in the oil. Fry until golden brown, turn-ing the hushpuppies during the cooking process. Makes about 35 hushpuppies

Beer Battered Onion Rings

1 1/3 cups all-purpose fl our,

about 6 ounces

1 tsp. salt

2 large sweet onions, sliced

1/4 tsp. pepper

1 tbsp. vegetable oil

2 large egg yolks

3/4 cup beer

Mix together the fl our, salt,

pepper, oil and egg yolks. Gradually whisk in the beer. Refrigerate the batter for 3 to 4 hours before using.Slice onions into rings; separate rings and dip in the batter. Add a little more beer, if needed.Deep-fry in batches in 370° oil until golden brown.

Tartar Sauce

1 cup mayonnaise

1 tsp. prepared mustard

2 tbsp. chopped sweet pickle

1 tbsp. chopped drained capers

2 tsp. chopped fresh parsley

Blend the ingredients to-gether well. Refrigerate and chill thoroughly until serving. Th is recipe makes about 1 1/4 cups of tartar sauce but can easily be adjusted for more.

June 27 • Pre-Fourth Fire-works at Hartwell Dam’s Big Oaks Recreation Area. Th is fi reworks show has food and activities for kids, from 5:30 - 9:30 p.m., the Community Band will be playing patriotic music from 8-9 p.m. and the Fireworks show starts about 9:15 p.m.
