Welcome from the Hoyt’s!Spring is in the air, and once again preparations are underway for an enjoyable summer season. A week of temperatures in the 80’s at the end of March unfortunately brought King Pine’s 50th season to an early end, however it gave the rest of our resorts a jump start on spring improvements and upgrades.

The Mill was re-sided and solar panels were installed on the roof to heat the pool water. As always, room upgrades and new paint are in process throughout Purity Spring. A number of rooms at King Pine received bathroom touchups with new tile and vanities. Rooms at The Inn and Millbrook received new paint and décor, and almost all of the resort is now comfortably sleeping on pillow-top mattresses.

WEDDING INTERN JOINS PSRPurity Spring Resort is incredibly fortunate to have Charlotte Chico returning for her second season as wedding intern.

Charlotte has enjoyed learning about the diversity of events that we host at the resort. Some of her experiences have included:

• Hostessing a chair lift arrival of a beautiful mountain top wedding ceremony, calculated down to the second to preplanned music.

• Learning the behind the scenes details of a beach wedding ceremony and tented reception for 200 guests at a remote location.

• Experiencing the joy of greeting guests and seeing the importance of all the detailed planning, which is critical with every event.

• Participating in pre-wedding meetings and wedding rehearsals.

Purity Spring Resort has a busy wedding season this year and no two events are ever the same. Charlotte has an excellent eye for detail and knows the importance of creating the bride’s vision for a perfect celebration, which are important traits for a future wedding planner.

All the best to Charlotte as she heads into her senior year at Moultonborough Academy and to her future college endeavors as she pursues her dream of becoming an event planner.

LETTERBOXING... WITH A TWIST!Looking for something different to do for the family next you visit Purity Spring? Want to learn more about the history behind Purity Spring and The Hoyt Family? Stop in at The Mill and ask about the Letterboxing kits!

Letterboxing is an intriguing pastime combining navigational skills and rubber stamp artistry in a "treasure hunt" style outdoor quest. Purity Spring offers a customized Letterboxing activity for guests looking to get outside and explore various areas of the resort during the warmer months. Handmade stamps have been hidden around the resort property. The Hoyt Family History book, which was specifically designed for this

Letterboxing activity, includes the history of Purity Spring, Camp Tohkomeupog, Camp Wampineauk, King Pine, Danforth Bay and The Bluffs. The clues on where to find the 10 letterboxes can be found in the book. Stamps, stamp pads and the collectable books can be purchased at The Blue Heron Gift Shop located at The Mill.

For more information on Letterboxing, visit www.purityspring.com/letterboxing.html

Steven Hoyt has been doing bike trail maintenance around Purity Spring; widening trails, cutting new single track and adding bridges to make mud crossings more fun.

Susie Hoyt has been busy in the gardens and spring flowers are out in abundance. Remember to check with Susie in the fall if you want any of our perennial splits.

Designs are being made for shade structures at the pools at Danforth Bay and The Bluffs, which will also double as the support structure for solar panels to heat the pools in the future. The Bluffs welcomed new sites along Lincoln Lane and Madison Avenue and final designs are being approved for future sites on Owl’s Head Road.

Tohkomeupog Alumni will be rebuilding the cabin at Spruce Point this spring and summer with the help of a few campers.

We’re looking forward to a great summer and fall and hope you enjoy it, too!

Sincerely,

A very high percentage of Purity Spring Resort business is from returning guests and friends you have recommended. If you refer a new guest to us we will reward you with a 10% commission. We figure, why just pay travel agents commissions; why not pay commissions to our loyal customers. For more information on our referral program, please visit www.purityspring.com/referrals.html. Keep up your good work – it is appreciated!

BALLROOM DANCING SWEEPS GUESTS OFF THEIR FEETDuring the spring and fall seasons, Purity Spring offers unique theme weekends that combine popular interests and hobbies for all ages. The first theme weekend introduced at the resort twenty years ago was Ballroom Dance. Four weekends a year during the months of April, May, September and October have created a lot of happy dancers and a lot of happy feet!

Paul and Doris Demers of Danvers, MA, have been our hosts and instructors since 2000. They started professional dance lessons in 1988 with Miss Tina of Gloucester, MA, and were trained in American Style Rhythm and Smooth variations. They have instructed activities at Beverly (Sterling), Gloucester, Marblehead and Ipswich YMCAs, Salem State College, Reading Adult Education and West Point, among others. Paul and Doris have also been the dance instructors on Celebrity, Norwegian and Carnival Cruise Lines.

Purity Spring is a great location for dance lovers who prefer small and personal instruction. All Purity Spring dance weekends are limited to eighty people. Lessons include four hours of instructions on two different rhythms Saturday, plus two hours of review on Sunday. The weekend also includes a dance Friday night and a special dinner/dance on Saturday night. This year, Memorial Day weekend has an added dance on Sunday night. Lessons are conducted in Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, Cha-Cha, Swing, Rumba, Bolero, Mambo, Hustle, Merengue and Samba.

Our Ballroom Dance Weekends are quite popular and typically sell out. Many dance couples return regularly, which has made for wonderful friendships.

SCRAPBOOKING GOES DIGITALThe good thing about digital photography is taking as many photos as you want; the bad thing is dealing with all of those pictures later! One way to organize your photos is scrapbooking.

When most people think of scrapbooking they think of paper, scissors, adhesives, stickers, pens and sometimes, a mess! Now, with the newest and fastest growing trend in the scrapbook world, croppers are capturing memories using computers, software and their digital photos to create gorgeous digital scrapbook pages.

During this year’s Family Scrapbook Weekend, November 16-18, our experienced facilitators, Brenda White and Marge Huston of Creative Memories, will take you through several great projects and introduce you to some new digital scrapbooking software including Memory Manager 3.0 and StoryBook Creator 4.0.

Use Memory Manager 3.0 to easily organize, cross-reference and fine-tune your digital photos so they’re ready for your next project when you are.

StoryBook Creator 4.0 Software is an innovative tool with unlimited creative potential. This easy-to-use software creates anything from custom photo books, cards, calendars and page prints to custom photo gifts.

The mother/daughter team of Brenda and Marge has been part of Purity Spring Resort’s scrapbooking weekends since the beginning in 2000. Brenda’s daughter, Sloane is joining the family tradition and teaches workshops at our Family Scrapbook Weekend as well.Family Scrapbook Weekend is designed to be a

weekend to preserve memories and make new ones! Besides scrapbooking, the weekend will be full with lots of games and prizes, a photo shoot and family photo time, a pizza party, Wii games, movies, pool time, and Purity’s resort amenities!

Our scrapbook weekends are fun for traditional scrapbookers and digital scrapbookers, with most retreats being a mix of the two. Whether you have been scrapbooking for years or are just getting started, a scrapbooking weekend at Purity Spring is sure to be educational, productive and a blast!

THE CUMBERLAND COUNTY GYMNASTICS CENTER LOVES KING PINE!Each year for the past twenty years between thirty and one hundred fun-loving gymnasts from Cumberland County Gymnastics Center (CCGC), their family and friends meet at King Pine for an exciting day of outdoor winter fun. Young or old, novice or expert, brave or timid, it matters little. Fun, fitness, family and friends make the day. This year seven members of the group had also been with us twenty years ago on the very first CCGC King Pine Family Day.

The staff at King Pine most likely were gymnasts as youngsters themselves for they always bend over backwards to be sure the day is all that anyone can hope for.

Will we do it all again next year? Stay tuned!

Things have been very busy at The Mill! Since last fall, we have increased the size of both the sitting area and the Blue Heron Gift Shop, redone The Mill office and laid down new carpet to complete the look.

With more space in the gift shop, we have been able to rearrange the space and add a greater variety of items for you, our guests.

Aqua Zumba, has been added to The Mill indoor pool’s programs and has been a huge hit with the pool and fitness center members. We will be offering an additional morning class this summer and hope resort guests will join in for an exhilirating workout with lots of laughs.

A few new therapists have been added to our massage and reiki staff, which means you can enjoy some relaxing body treatments this summer.

With all of these additions we are excited to share what’s new, so please stop by The Mill when you arrive to experience the changes.

CAMP WAMPINEAUKThe spirit still lives in the valley Just a few years after Camp Tohkomeupog for boys was opened, Ellen Hoyt opened Camp Wampineauk for girls. From 1934 to 1977, hundreds of girls spent their summers on the shores of Purity Lake building friendships and learning about the land and wildlife.

Camp Wampineauk may be closed but the spirit still lives in the valley. Six ladies in these pictures now have homes in East Madison. Many others live in nearby communities. One Wampineauk camper vacations every winter at Purity Spring and King Pine with her husband and two sons. Many visit Purity Spring with their families during the summer season and some attend Family Camp during the end of August to partake in traditional camp activities that remind them so much of their days at Wampineauk. 5

CAMP TOHKOMEUPOG...81 Years of Outdoor Adventure, Friendship & Opportunities for boys

Tohkomeupog will open for the 81st season on July 1, 2012. We are currently gearing up for another summer of Outdoor Adventure, Friendship and Opportunity, and we’re happy to report that again we will have 100% of our staff returning from prior summers in East Madison.

Space is still available for campers during some sessions. Special incentives are being offered for new campers attending the first two week Session (Option “E” from July 1-15, 2012). Contact Andrew Mahoney at (603) 367-8362 or [email protected] for details.

SPRUCE POINT CABINShown above is a digital montage of the design for the new Spruce Point Cabin. The original cabin, built “many moons ago,” was disassembled and removed by a group of Tohkomeupog Staff and Alumni this past September.

Alumnus Jon Chace (principal of Chace Architecture) donated his design skills, and a new cabin will be built in 2012. However, because the new cabin will be a bit larger, New Hampshire shoreline protection approval must be secured. As a result, construction is pending the issuing of permits by the State of New Hampshire which we expect to happen this spring. Once we receive approval the cabin will be built by a combination of Tohkomeupog staff, Alumni and current campers.

Artist redintion of the new Spruce Point cabin to be built by Alumni volunteers this spring/summer.

Recognize anyone in this 1967 camp photo? Many are members of the camp Facebook group. Look it up!

The Girls Waterfront no longer exists, but the area can be found on the Audubon Property side of dam.

In the early 1970’s, campers used a clay court behind the Senior House at the start of Horseleg Hill Road.

The older campers made this hammock out of twine for the younger girls.

UPDATES AT THE BLUFFSThere are several new and exciting projects underway at The Bluffs this year. Four additional sites have been completed at the end of Madison Avenue and are already occupied. Additional sites at the end of Lincoln Lane are nearing completion and a number of sites throughout the park that needed additional work are also close to being finished. Final designs are almost done for Owl’s Head Road. If you are interested in seeing the proposed layout, a copy of the plans can be viewed in the Seasonal Office. Construction could begin as soon as this fall or next spring.

upgrades to the Clubhouse air conditioning system will begin shortly and additional washers have been ordered for The Bluffs laundry room. Several new WiFi antennas have been installed, as we work to improve the park wireless system.

We have had a number of requests for additional shade by the pools. In response, construction of a shade structure between the two large pools located behind the Depot at Danforth Bay will begin in the next two weeks. This will not only provide needed shade, but will also serve as a support for a solar collection system to heat the pools, which we hope to install next spring. A similar shade structure and solar collection system is being designed for The Bluffs pools.

HALLOWEEN TOWN

In October of 2009, with incredible support from our local community, Halloween Town was first established on the grounds of Camp Tohkomeupog in East Madison, NH. Hundreds of volunteers contributed creative talent to bring this event to life. Representing Purity Spring Resort, the Tohkomeupog Alumni Association and the Mount Washington Valley community, these enthusiastic “friendly ghosts” created a uniquely fun, fantastical experience for trick-or-treaters.

That first year, despite relentlessly heavy rains, about 300 people turned out to explore the haunted pathways of Halloween Town. In 2010, under starry skies, numbers soared to about 1,200 visitors. Last year, we proudly welcomed a conservative estimate of 2,000 individuals through the gates of Halloween Town. The response to this event has been absolutely incredible!

One simple explanation for this dramatic surge of popularity is the fact is that the traditional ability to ‘trick-or-treat’ is somewhat limited in our community. In many areas, houses are few and far between. By following the “Trick-or-Treat Trail”, kids are able to visit a series of theatrically transformed cabins in the search for treats, and adventure. It is a safe, entertaining way for kids from throughout the Mount Washington Valley, and beyond, to celebrate the spirit of this holiday.

BEHIND THE SCENES - FUNDRAISING & ITS IMPORTANCEIn terms of The Laura Foundation, Halloween Town serves two purposes. For one, we use the event to raise awareness about our existence… and also, of course, about our mission, which focuses on individuals living with autism and

epilepsy. For more information, check out www.thelaurafoundation.org.

Halloween Town is also a very important fund-raiser for our organization. Monies raised at Halloween Town will be used towards satisfying foundation goals: specifically, the development of an adaptive sports and recreation center, to be located in East Madison, NH. While specific

adaptive sports programs can be found in the Northeast - the center we envision will be the first of its kind based in New England.

VISION BECOMING REALITY Thanks to initial fundraising efforts, specifically Halloween Town, significant strides have been taken towards the realization of this vision. Following a thoughtful architectural strategy, and with unanimous approval from the Madison Planning Board, construction at the center began in earnest during the fall of 2011. A septic system was approved and put in by the state, and water lines were dug in preparation for Phase 1 of construction.

During Phase 1, an existing building at the site is being expanded and winterized to allow for programs such as music and art therapy. The building will include bathrooms, a kitchen facility, increased dedicated space for programs, as well as space for storage. Interior work

(carpentry, electrical, plumbing and heating) is currently underway. Progress has been steady and Phase 1 of construction is scheduled for completion by the end of June 2012, in time for summer programming.

The adaptive sports and recreation center also contains an outdoor arena for therapeutic horseback riding, sessions of which are slated

to take place this summer. With that in mind, Phase 2 of construction includes the building of a barn for the horses. Ultimately, the barn will become a very versatile facility on its own, comprising an indoor climbing wall and multi-purpose court. The Final Phase of construction includes outdoor multi-purpose courts, a playground area and a botanical area.

Obviously, a project of this scope requires lots of money. We are applying for grants and we remain hopeful that some of those applications will prove successful. Regardless, receiving community support through fund-raising is of critical importance. And so we return to Halloween Town. While we do intend to raise money at Halloween Town, there will be and has been no admission fee for the ‘trick-or-treat’ portion of the event. This is good, old-fashioned Halloween fun; we want kids to come and enjoy!

Continued at www.purityspring.com/news5-12

Phase 1 of 3 has begun which includes winterizing the existing building at the planned adaptive sports and recreation center for programs such as music and art therapy. Next phases include a barn facility for riding horses and recreation as well as an indoor climbing wall, multi-purpose courts and a botanical area.
