CARGO AIRCRAFT CHARTERS

Air Charter Service

NORTH AMERICA - SOUTH AMERICA - EUROPE - AFRICA - MIDDLE EAST - CIS - ASIA

Air Charter Service is one of the largest air charter companies in the world, generating revenue of over $350 million, coordinating 5,000 full charters and has offices across North America, South America, Europe, Africa, CIS, the Middle East and Asia.

ACS accredits the company’s success to dedication to its core values; providing outstanding service, unrivalled flexibility and unparalleled value.

HISTORY

ACS was first founded by Chris Leach in 1990, an aviation expert, who has experienced every aspect of the business first hand, from coordinating passenger flights across Europe in the 1970s, to transporting personnel and aid in and out of Sudan during the 1980s. It was this knowledge that enabled him to win his first key contracts with organisations such as the United Nations.

When ACS first opened, the charter market had been deemed saturated, with a small number of large established companies controlling the market along with a handful of smaller brokerages. Many thought that there was not enough room for a new big player; however ACS’s commitment to personal service proved popular, in what had been described, by some, as a complacent market.

In the years that followed ACS grew organically. With continual re-investment, ACS was able to open regional offices in strategically placed locations, across the globe. ACS now employs over 200 staff worldwide, who speak local languages and have expertise in their own regional markets.

HEAVY & OUTSIZE CARGO

Chartering an ‘outsize’ load (2010)

CARGO: Control unitWEIGHT: 36 tonsAIRCRAFT: Ilyushin-76ROUTE: Vatry International, France – Port Harcourt, Nigeria

In 2010 ACS’s expertise was called into action when a client, an experienced sea freight organisation, urgently required an aircraft to transport an extremely awkward load. The product could not be dismantled, so transporting the item in one piece was the only option.

Meticulous planning was required and the cargo only just squeezed inside the Ilyushin-76 aircraft. It was by applying years of experience and discussions with various operators that ACS was able to determine whether it was in fact loadable at all. ACS ensured the operation would be successful by making sure the loadmasters went to the site, measured and checked everything before a contract was agreed. The cargo fitted with only millimetres to spare and arrived safely in Port Harcourt.

Transporting heavy and outsize cargo is a challenging procedure which requires skill and expertise. By utilising a detailed knowledge of cargo aircraft volumes and loading abilities, ACS can organise outsize and heavy cargo to be transported effortlessly.

ACS is a longstanding, trusted supplier for many organisations who regularly require outsize and heavy cargo charters, to carry cargo such as;

• Oil industry equipment • Power station parts• Marine diesel engines• Engineering constructions• Aircraft components• Satellites and communication equipment• Vehicle transportation• Film and music stage sets

HAZARDOUS GOODS

Oil refinery charter in Africa (2010)

CARGO: Oil refinery componentsAIRCRAFT: Embraer 110ROUTE: Cape Town, South Africa – Pemba, Mozambique – Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania

In 2010, ACS was asked to provide a charter for 2 different pieces of dangerous cargo, class 1 and 7 explosives and radioactive materials.

Within 30 minutes ACS located an Embraer 110 aircraft available for immediate charter. Due to the size of the oil refinery components, the cargo could easily fit onto one aircraft as long as they were properly segregated in-flight. Once confirmation had been received the aircraft was positioned for loading first thing the next morning.

ACS also worked overnight, organising the over flight and landing permissions essential for the transportation of dangerous goods.

Volcanic ash cloud travel restrictions backlog (2010)

CARGO: Automotive spare partsAIRCRAFT: x 2 Learjet 35

ROUTE: Zurich, Switzerland - Gander, Canada - Chicago, USA.

Subsequent to the reopening of European airspace, following the air travel restrictions caused by the volcanic ash cloud in 2010, ACS received an urgent request to charter a small amount of automotive spares for a production line.

ACS immediately set to action, the cargo, originally built up on a number of wooden pallets, was broken down into individual boxes, thus enabling them to be loaded onto smaller jets. The cargo was then flown to the USA via Canada, where the cargo was transhipped onto its final destination using two separate Learjet 35 aircraft.

A European aircraft was used for the first half of the journey, and an American aircraft for the second part. By mobilising two separate, smaller aircraft and transhipping the cargo between them in Canada, ACS was able to save time by avoiding lengthy delays caused by traffic right applications and positioning flights. In offering Canadian accredited aircraft, ACS was also able to obtain Canadian permits much faster than flying the cargo direct from Europe to the USA, saving the client vital time.

TESTIMONIAL: ACS has been the mainstay for our emergency automotive solutions via aircraft charter. They provide a professional, reliable, cost-effective service that meets all our worldwide requirements. Thanks to Air Charter Service our emergency requirements are made that little bit easier to organise and fulfil.

Afghanistan Military Base cargo charters (2009 – 2010)

CARGO: Construction EquipmentAIRCRAFT: Ilyushin-76ROUTE: Fujairah International Airport, UAE - Camp Bastian Airport, Afghanistan

Due to the impending danger of travelling along the roads connecting Kandahar and Camp Bastian, ACS had been asked to conduct many charters into the region, at times up to 30 per month. One programme in particular ran for 8 months, whereby ACS organised a series of 65 charters, carrying essential construction equipment.

Having previous experience into the region ensured the project ran without a hitch, such as selecting the most effective aircraft for the mission, which was an IL-76. This was due to the aircraft’s ability to land on shorter runways, take off on a higher gradient and perform spiral landings - a technique commonly used when flying within war zones.

Other considerations included keeping to schedule, due to military permissions taking two days to authorise, the unavailability of fuel at the airport and ground handling limitations at the base.

Haiti Humanitarian Relief Response (2010)

CARGO: 5,000 tons of emergency aid and equipmentPASSENGERS: 400 passengersCHARTERS: 100+AIRCRAFT: 20 aircraft types

In January 2010 an earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale hit Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti, killing tens of thousands of people and devastating the capital and surrounding areas. In the months which followed, ACS chartered over 100 aircraft and carried 5,000 tons of emergency aid into the region.

The first ACS aircraft to depart for Haiti flew from London Gatwick with the British search and rescue team, and was airborne within 8 hours of confirmation. Despite the severe weather conditions in London, ACS, in partnership with Gatwick airport, was able to clear the runway of snow enabling the plane to depart ahead of other commercial traffic.

ACS played an important role throughout the entire Haiti relief effort, ensuring that, despite the ongoing communication problems, operations ran smoothly, with the help of 3 ACS staff members who remained on-site at Santa Domingo and Port-au-Prince airports. The ACS staff members coordinated aircraft slots, handling and passenger offloading and, by having local support, ACS was able to maximise the amount of aid delivered into the region and ensure the transit was fast and problem free.

Throughout the re-development of Haiti ACS was on hand, performing a long running program of cargo air charters for over 12 months after the quake. Moving more than 5,000 tons of aid, and utilising over 20 types of aircraft from Cessna Caravans to Antonov 124s, ACS moved vital cargo which included:

• Construction materials and equipment• Food• Relief kits• Tents• Blankets• Water purification tablets • Medical supplies• Toys• Books• Kitchen sets

In addition to this, during the initial response phase, ACS provided more than 75 rapid response aircraft charters delivering emergency aid and personnel, including:

• Search and rescue staff• Aid workers• Rescue dogs• Doctors • Search and rescue vehicles and equipment • Journalists

No matter the size of the required part, large or small, ACS are experts in providing ‘Go Now’ charters for outsized cargo, transporting everything from aircraft engines, nose cones and avionics equipment.

CASE STUDY

AOG Response (2009)

CARGO: Aircraft engineWEIGHT: 15 tonsAIRCRAFT: Antonov 124ROUTE: Stansted, London – Boston, USA In July 2009 ACS received a request from an in-house forwarder to a major British Airline who had an AOG aircraft in Boston which urgently required a new engine.

The engine manufacturer was based in the United Kingdom, so the only choice was to charter an aircraft to fly the engine from the UK to the United States. The selected aircraft was an Antonov 124 because of the size of the part being over 4 meters high. ACS quickly set to work and within 2 days of confirmation the aircraft was ready to load and depart.

The engine promptly arrived at the airport by trailer where ACS was on-hand to help coordinate the loading of the engine onto the aircraft. The charter was a success and the airline was able to regain its schedule and keep its fleet flying.
