Haitian Revolution Influenced immensely by the French Revolution. Started as a civil war between white plantation owners and free men and women of mixed race. A vast slave uprising added to the conflict.
Toussaint L’Ouverture
Had the experience to bridge the gap between slave and master. Organized the rebel forces into a legit fighting force. French forces sent by Napoleon eventually captured L’Ouverture. Although L’Ouverture was in prison the revolution still continued.
Latin American Revolutions
Latin American Wars of Independence
First brought along by Francisco Miranda, who saw both the American and French Revolutions. Goal was to launch a continent-wide fight for independence against the Spanish crown. When Napoleon put his brother on the throne in Spain, the time was right.
Local elites formed “juntas”, rejecting Napoleonic Spain. Individuals like Miranda, Simon Bolivar, and Jose de San Martin saw the opportunity to win complete independence. Building a case for independence would require appealing to the native and mixed-race groups of people.
