Teaching Routines & Procedures

Teaching Appropriate Behavior (Dahlgren, 2005)*

Goals–Clearly state what you expect students to do Rationale–Explain why you want the students to follow this

procedure or routine Model–Model the expected behavior, showing how it is

correctly done. Correct/Incorrect–Show what the procedure is not. Role play

with a student who is not following the procedure. Practice–Repeatedly practice the procedure correctly. Review

the procedure periodically throughout the year.*Dahlgren, R. (2005). Time to teach. Coeur d’Alene, ID: The Center for Teaching

Effectiveness.

Teaching Routines & Procedures

Teach routines as you would any subject in the curriculum Teach routines and procedures as a lesson, not

an afterthought. Spend the first three weeks of school, reviewing

and practicing procedures.Worth time spent because learning will not be disrupted when students perform the routines by rote.
