“That revelation was reserved at the time the compilation for [the 1835 Doctrine and Covenants] was made by Oliver Cowdery and others, in Kirtland. It was not wisdom to publish it to the world, and it remained in the private [writing desk]. Brother Joseph had that revelation concerning this nation at a time when the brethren were reflecting and reasoning with regard to African slavery on this continent, and the slavery of the children of men throughout the world. There are other revelations, besides this one, not yet published to the world. In the due time of the Lord, the Saints and the world will be privileged with the revelations that are due to them. • 87:1. Not just the American Civil War: “wars that will shortly come to pass, beginning at the rebellion of South Carolina….” Wars “poured out upon all nations,” and

“eventually terminate in the death and misery of many souls.”

• 87:3. “Great Britain…shall also call upon other nations.”

• 87:4. “Slaves shall rise up against their masters.”

• 87:5. “Remnants who are left…shall vex the Gentiles with a sore vexation.” Who is the remnant?

Lamanites/Native Americans (19:27; 109:65), or

Scattered tribes of Israel (45:24, 43; 113:10), or

• 101:86–92. Appeal their cause all the way to the President. President Martin Van Buren,

February 1840: “Your cause is just, but I can do nothing for you.”

• 103:6. The Saints shall “begin to prevail against mine enemies from this very hour.”

Presumptions

• God exists within linear time (D&C 130:4–5; Abraham 3:1–9).

• Joy and anger are emotions felt from met or unmet expectations.

• Petitionary prayer makes God’s actions conditional upon asking.

I presume they would tell you, that all the wealth, honors, and riches of the world could not buy the knowledge they had obtained, could they barter it away.” — Brigham Young, October 1853
