TRACY HARDING

One of Jodies favoritememories of Christmas, would have been whenshe was 13 years old, andliving in Abbotsford,B.C. Her Mom and Dadhad volunteered to deliv-er Christmas Hampers tofamilies in need, and shewent along with them tohelp.

They had visitedmany homes to deliverpresents and food tothese families, and oneparticular home stays inher memories, as well asher heart. They arrivedto the door, and gotgreeted with excitementfrom all. The family had4 kids, and one little boywas 3, maybe 4.

While the other 3 kids

were so excited to see thepresents and everything, this one little boy, whowas hiding a little bitfrom these strangers inhis home, saw a jug ofmilk, and the box offood. This is when hisexcitement came out.

Jodie remembers thisfondly, as she had neverseen someone so excitedto get a jug of milk, andhave no care for the pres-ents that were there.

To this day, this mem-ory still tears at Jodie’s,and her Mom’s heart

strings.Ever since that time,

Jodie has made a point tonot make Christmasabout the presents, butabout the little things. She remembers that it isabout what we can do forothers, not always whatwe can do for ourselves.

Jodie hopes to instillthese same traditions inher children, and givethem memories just asgood of to hold on to.

Merry Christmas toall!

TRACY HARDING

There are many stepsto preparing a turkey forthat big turkey supper, that we all look forwardto all year long.

Before you can eventhink about thawing, orcooking this bird, youneed to choose the sizethat you require for, quite possibly thebiggest meal of the year. When looking at whatsize of turkey you need, you should generallyallow for about onepound per person. So ifyou are feeding 20 peo-ple, you will need a 20pound turkey.

To defrost this deli-cious turkey, you need toallow for three to fourhours per pound. Thawyour turkey either underrefrigeration, or in thesink with cold water, thatyou are continuouslyreplacing.

Since it takes a longerperiod of time forturkeys to cook through, and reach the internaltemperature to kill bacte-ria, you should makesure to prepare theyummy stuffing, thatgoes with every turkeydinner, seperate.

Once you havethawed the bird, cleanedit all out, and preparedand stuffed the turkey, itis time to get it in theoven. This is never a fastprocess, so be preparedto smell that delicious, mouth watering, aromaall day long. On averageyou want to cook theturkey for roughly 20minutes per pound, atthe temperature of 325degrees fahrenheit.

So for that 20 poundbird that you picked up,to serve 20 of yourfriends and/or familyyou will need to cook theturkey for approximately

six to seven hours.Around every hour youwill need to baste theturkey to keep all thejuices flowing, and helpit stay moist. Anotherhint is if you cook theturkey breast side down, this also helps to keepthe juices in.

Once the turkey hasreached a temperature of135 - 140 degrees, thenyou can turn the temper-ature of your stove up to400 degrees for a brieftime, to help withbrowning.

For that perfectlycooked white meat youwant the inside to be 160- 165 degrees. If you letthe meat get to 180degrees, your white meatwill be dried out.

Once the turkey isfinished, let it sit foraround 20 minutes, thencarve and enjoy.

How to prepare the Christmasturkey for all to enjoy

The Museum’s finalspecial event for the yearwas held on Sunday,December 13th. SusanChristie, the Museum’sSpecial Events Coor-dinator, welcomed the 55people in attendance andintroduced Bob Voelker, the Museum’s Board ofManagement Chair-per-son, who led the serviceand explained both thesignificance and unique-ness of this Moraviantradition.

As has been the tradi-tion of Moravians world-wide since the mid-1700’s, a service of gos-pel readings telling thestory of Christ’s birth, with appropriate hymnssung following each, guests were treated to atraditional Moravian Ch-ristmas Eve candlelightservice complete withdecorated beeswax can-dles. Since its introduc-tion in Germany in the1740’s, Moravians havebeen decorating beeswaxcandles skirted with redribbon or paper to sym-bolize the purity ofChrist and His light inthe world. The candlesused during this after-noon’s service werethose made by volun-teers and guests duringthe Museum’s popular“Christmas in July”event.

Music also plays an

integral part of anyMoravian service orevent and as guestsarrived they were firsttreated to an instrumen-tal ensemble that wasorganized by Morey Sch-neider of the Bruderheimcongregation and includ-ed two trombones, a so-prano saxophone, a tru-mpet and flute.

Accompaniment forthe service itself wasexpertly provided byGary and Irene Gabert ofMor-inville, with Garyplaying the organ (withchi-mes) and Irene the1912 Gourlay piano.

While the Wudel fam-ily, of the Heimtal con-gregation, beautifully sa-ng two Christmas carols,“Dieners”, or servers, pr-epared to hand out thecandles. Just before thesinging of the Moravianhymn, “Morning Star” (which is traditionallysung by a child or youthof the congregation) the irst candle was lit fromthe “Christ candle” ofthe Advent wreath and

was then passed on do-wn the rows of pewsuntil everyone’s candlewas lit. Young GraceBaker of the Bruderheimcongregation angelicallysang the lead in thisresponsive hymn and on the last verse the lit can-dles were raised high to“let Christ’s light shine”.

Everyone had theopportunity to visit andpartake of the deliciousrefreshments that wereprovided, as well as pur-chase Moravian stars orother decorative itemsthat can be found in thegift shop!

The doors of themuseum are now closeduntil May 2012, when theMuseum directors hopeto open again with muchneeded new carpetingand bathroom renova-tions completed!

Away in a MangerAway in a manger, no crib for a bed,

The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head. The stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay,

The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes,But little Lord Jesus no crying he makes.

I love thee, Lord Jesus! Look down from the sky,And stay by my side until morning is nigh.

Be near me Lord Jesus,I ask thee to stay.

Close by me forever,And love my I pray.

Bless all the dear children,In thy tender care.

And take them to heaven,To be with thee there.

holiday!

Twas the Night before Christmas PoemTwas the night before Christmas, when all through the house

Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,

In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads.

And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.

Away to the window I flew like a flash,Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snowGave the lustre of mid-day to objects below.

When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,But a miniature sleigh, and eight tinny reindeer.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,I knew in a moment it must be St Nick.

More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!

"Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen! On, Comet! On, Cupid! on, on Donner and Blitzen!

To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall! Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky.

So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,With the sleigh full of Toys, and St Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roofThe prancing and pawing of each little hoof.

As I drew in my head, and was turning around,Down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot.

A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back,And he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack.

His eyes-how they twinkled! his dimples how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,

And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow.

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.

He had a broad face and a little round belly,That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly!

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself!

A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk.

And laying his finger aside of his nose,And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose!

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.

But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!"

Tracy Harding’s favoritemoment of the Christmas season

Quality family time togetherOne of Tracy’s fond-

est memories at Chri-stmas time, is more of atradition that her and hermom had.

Every year at Chri-stmas time her brotherand dad used to head tothe mountains to gosnowmobiling, whileTracy and her momwould stay home soTracy could keep skat-ing.

During this time,Tracy and her momwould decorate thehouse, bake shortbreadcookies and tarts, makechocolate cherries. All inthe while listening toChristmas Music.

Also every year, Tracyand her mom used makea gingerbread house. Hermom would make theshell, and Tracy woulddecorate it. She alwaystried to copy the box.

This time alwayscame after her parentshad finished working ongetting the poinsettiasout, and it was kind oflike boys time in themountains, and girlstime at home.

Her and her momwould watch Christmasmovies, and wrap someof the last presents, andget everything ready forwhen the boys wouldcome home.

For as long as she canremember, Christmashas always been aboutspending time with yourfamily and loved ones. And to this day she hascontinued that traditionthrough. She now bakeswith her kids, and deco-rates the house while lis-tening to Christmas ca-rols.

Also every year, theymake sure to watch someof their favorite Chri-stmas movies.

The most importantthing for Tracy atChristmas is to spendquality time with herfamily and loved ones. She has always preferedto make presents insteadof buying them, and istrying to teach her chil-dren the same ideas. That Christmas is abouttraditions and specialmoments.

Christmas! The very word brings joy to

our hearts. No matter how we may dread

the rush, the long Christmas listsfor gifts and cards to be

bought and given--when Christmas Day comesthere is still the same warmfeeling we had as children,

the same warmth that enfoldsour hearts and our homes.

On the twelth day ofChristmasWatch A Christmas Carol.

Choose an age appro-priate version for yourfamily. Younger kidslove The Muppet Chris-tmas Carol, while olderchildren can appreciateGeorge C. Scott as Ebe-nezer. For adults, Scro-oged with Bill Murray isa comedic twist on theDickens tale that incl-udes plenty of tear indu-cing scenes. It's the per-fect time for munchingold fashioned home-made buttered popcorn, while curled under cozyblankets to chase offwinter's chill. On the eleventh day ofChristmasSend Christmas Cards.

This is the time ofyear to reconnect withthose you care about, especially long-distancefriends and relatives. Geteveryone to help, fromwriting notes inside andsigning the cards to put-ting the stamps on theenvelopes. You'll beat themailing frenzy at thepost office by getting

your cards out early, while letting someoneknow they're beingthought of at Christmas. On the tenth day ofChristmasDecorate a GingerbreadHouse.

You can bake the gin-gerbread house fromscratch using a templateor you can buy a pre-baked kit at most dis-count stores. Anotheralternative is to use gra-ham crackers for thewalls, attached to an em-pty pint container ofmilk or cream. The milkcarton provides stabilityfor the graham crackersto be stuck on with frost-ing. Decorate using avariety of icing colors, hard candies, licoriceand other colorful con-fections.On the ninth day ofChristmasDecorate a Christmas Tree.

If you haven't alreadydecorated your Chris-tmas tree, go ahead anddecorate it! If you havedone it, or are waitinguntil later in the month, get a small tree to deco-

rate for each child'sroom. Let each child dec-orate their own tree withpopcorn strings, tinsel, homemade ornaments ordollar store decorationsand lights. On the eighth day ofChristmasCelebrate Christmas Past.

Get out the photos ofChristmases past. Every-thing from the oldendays when Mom & Dadwere little, to the recentyears when the kids werea bit smaller. Watch theprevious Christmas cele-brations that you record-ed with your video rec-order, taking time to cel-ebrate what has past andwhat the future holds. On the seventh day ofChristmasWatch Classic ChristmasShows.

Some Christmas spe-cials have remained fav-orites year after year, with both adults andkids alike. Get a DVDwith one or more of theclassics - Rudolph theRed-Nosed Reindeer, Fr-osty the Snowman, The

Little Drummer Boy andThe Grinch Who StoleChristmas. Popcorn, Ch-ristmas cookies and atoasty fire are bonuses. On the sixth day ofChristmasHave a Game Night.

Bring out the boardgames that haven't beenplayed in a while. Pla-ying nice is a great exam-ple of Christmas spirit. On the fifth day ofChristmasChristmas Light Drive.

Pile everyone in thecar and drive throughyour local neighbor-hoods admiring housesdressed in their Chris-tmas finery. If it's coldout, bring blankets andpillows to make the careven cozier. Take votesand choose your favoritelight show among themall. On the fourth day ofChristmasWrap Presents.

Help younger chil-dren wrap gifts to otherfamily members or tea-chers, older kids can cho-ose their favorite wrap-ping paper and get their

gifts wrapped. On the third day ofChristmasRead Christmas Stories.

Snuggle with every-one on the couch to readChristmas stories. Pict-ure books are perfect fortonight, no matter whatage the children are. Chr-istmas picture bookshave beautiful illustra-tions to add to the expe-rience. A few favoritesare: The Polar Express,Rudolph The Red-NosedReindeer, and 'Twas theNight Before Christmas. On the second day ofChristmasEnjoy family
