This issue we catch up with Laura Jo Hawk who has just completed a busy year as a mem- ber of Leadership Stark County’s 22nd Class Signature Program in addition to being involved with the Mercy Service League; Canton Rotary; and the board of the North Central Ohio Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. Laura Jo, how did Leadership Stark County help you grow personally? Some of the experiences were simply beyond my comfort zone, putting me into a world that I knew existed, yet had not personally experienced (the poverty simulation, the Samaritan’sTable meal program, and the Stark County Jail tour). Through it all, I had the opportunity to discover the personalities of my class mates; developing relationships and hope- fully, lasting friendships. Any surprises throughout the program? During the Cultural Diversity program I discovered that people whom I thought were the most like me, had had totally different upbringings than I had – yet we all found ourselves in the same place and time through Leadership Stark County. As a development and fund-raising professional, give us your viewpoint on the Signature program. The Leadership program content has been first-rate – from the variety of the activities, to the various speakers and guests, to the diverse locations through- out the region. I don’t think we ever met in the same place twice! I am extremely glad that I got to meet so many interesting people. What leadership lessons have you learned that you could share with others? I have learned that leaders come in all sizes, from all walks of life, and are formed by many different experiences. But all leaders have the same basic traits of being able to connect with others, have a vision and ability to articulate it, are willing to learn from new experi- ences as well as learn from mistakes, and have the ability to get others to share in their passion. Stark County’s 22nd Signature class?

The entire year has gone so quickly; itseems like just yesterday we were atthe Class Retreat – strangers yet eagerto get to know each other, a bit nerv-ous, yet excited to be together. TheLeadership year was one of discovery, both personally and professionally, as Ilearned and experienced so manythings that I had never thought to con-sider before, or if I had, I simply tookfor granted.

I am extremely proud to now be aLeadership Alum and Grad. It is anexperience that will be with me for alifetime. And I am sad to see the yearcome to an end yet hopeful for thefuture that we can create for our littlecorner of the world in Stark County.

What’s your best career advice?

Be open to the story unfolding aroundyou, be aware of opportunities as theyarise, do not limit yourself but exploredifferent paths, have courage and

don’t be afraid to make mistakes andremain confident in yourself becauseyou are far more capable than youmight realize.

Faces of Leadership ...

In recognition of our achievements,HealthGrades honored Mercy with aCoronary Intervention ExcellenceAward™ for the second year in a rowalong with three five-star ratings forcoronary bypass surgery, coronary inter-ventional procedures and treatment ofheart attacks.

These ratings reflect our commitment toconsistent delivery of quality care, as wellas our investments in technology, whichare intended to make health care saferand more effective.

This year we became the first in ourservice area to perform minimally inva-sive, robot-assisted heart surgery allowingsurgeons to perform an open-heart pro-cedure with significantly less trauma andfaster recovery and healing for eligiblepatients.

Other heart center firsts include theworld’s first accredited emergency chest

pain center and the nation’s first fixed,state-of-the-art cardiac catheterizationlab in an emergency department. Mercyalso became Ohio’s first emergency chestpain center with accreditation to performangioplasty 24/7.

The communities we serve can continueto be confident in Mercy, knowing theyhave access to some of the very bestcare in the nation.

Not only does the Stark County commu-nity benefit from Mercy Medical Center’shigh quality of care, we have long beenleaders in giving back to the community;as part of our mission, we make a specialeffort to reach out to provide neededservices to all segments of societythrough programs such as ProjectC.A.R.E., summer Peace Camps, MercyPALS, Pathfinder Program and more.

Leadership StarkCounty’s firstexecutive directorand one of its

founders, HarlanD. Dobry passed away on October 14,2009 at the age of 90. In 1997 as partof a “focus on the Charter Class series”Kathy Poporad, 3rd class, wrote the fol-lowing tribute which is a fitting remem-brance of Mr. Dobry.

At a time when most men andwomen are thinking about makingplans for retirement, Harlan D. Dobrybegan a new career as ExecutiveDirector of Leadership Canton.

As early as 1984, Harlan had becomefamiliar with other community leader-ship programs around the state andfelt that Canton could truly benefitfrom such a program. With otheritems having greater priority on the

Chamber agenda, Harlan, as the thenCanton Chamber of CommercePresident realized that this dreamwould have to wait. But later thatyear the Chamber board approved ofestablishing the program and accord-ing to Harlan Dobry,“the movers andshakers of Canton set about to makethis dream a reality.”

Although Harlan was set to retire asChamber President in 1987, heagreed to serve as the first executivedirector of Leadership Canton, “justto get it started.” His enthusiasm forevery aspect of the program was evi-dent, including: generating supportfrom the business community, brain-storming with other Leadership pro-gram Executive Directors around thecountry, and establishing a very effec-tive marketing and promotion planfor Leadership Canton.

His willingness to serve comes as nosurprise to those who know ofHarlan’s history of stewardship andcommunity service. Early in his careerhe became acquainted with Jaycees’activities and as he puts it “… beganto make my avocation my vocation.”This led to his career shift fromhuman resources management tochamber executive. For sixteen yearshe served as President of the CantonRegional Chamber of Commerceleading this organization throughmajor growth years. In 1991, Harlan Dobry decided totake the term “retirement” seriouslyand although he had lived and workedin a variety of cities and states choseto remain in Canton, the city whichhe served so well.

Recognizing Harlan’s tireless efforts inestablishing and administering such astrong, credible leadership program in
