Student Expectations

Students will be expected to show the same professionalism in the classroom that would be expected of any professional in the field. This includes:

Attendance:

Students are expected to be present for each class period, on time. Students will be engaged in the classroom until the class period is over. If an absence is necessary, you are responsible for contacting your instructor to see about missed work and making that time up. Absences will result in points deducted from their daily grade until that time has been made up.

Behavior:

Students are expected to maintain positive behavior in the classroom. They will treat the instructor and classmates with utmost respect. Bad attitudes will be left outside the classroom. Students will be expected to behave as if they are in a professional working environment; this not only includes attitude, but appearance as well. Inappropriate behaviors will result in points being deducted from their daily grade, documented in student’s records and/or referral to the office. Students should pay special attention to hygiene and dress. Wednesday will be professional dress day, and part of the student’s extra credit grade will be determined by how well they participate in this activity.

Work Ethic:

Students will come into the classroom ready to work. They will grab their materials and head straight to their workstations, and begin assignments for the day. Students will keep their workstations neat, and in order, and keep walkways free of debris. Students will do their own work. Failure to do so can result disciplinary action and possible dismissal from the program. If a student needs help they should use all the resources they have first, and then seek help from the instructor. Students will adhere strictly to due dates for assignments, failure to do so can result in loss of points, a zero on an assignment, or dismissal from the program.

Instructor Expectations

Knowledge:

The Instructor should be knowledgeable in the subject matter being presented in the course. The Instructor should be committed to increasing their knowledge, and staying up to date with present knowledge. The Instructor should also convey the desire for continual learning to the students.

Page 3: Learning Competencies - Geary High School€¦  · Web viewDemonstrate proper phone etiquette and techniques.—conference calls, voice mail, pagers, video conferencing, transferring

Preparedness:

The Instructor should always be prepared for the day’s activities before they walk into the classroom, including back up plans for complications, or students that work faster or slower than the other students. This includes being knowledgeable of policy and procedures, and methodologies to help all students learn to the best of their ability.

Professionalism:

The Instructor should convey the same level of professionalism expected by supervisors in prospective job markets to the students in order for them to exhibit the same level of professionalism when they leave the program and enter the workforce. The Instructor should also hold students accountable to exhibit the appropriate level of professionalism in the classroom.

Facilitation:

The Instructor should facilitate an environment where all students should feel comfortable and accepted for who they are, and not be afraid of discrimination or any other harm. They should also facilitate an appropriate environment for multi-level learners. Every student should feel as if they can reach their full potential in your classroom.

Resourcefulness:

The Instructor should be able to provide any and all resources the student might need to understand and complete assignments.

CTSO:

The Instructor should encourage active involvement in student organization, and encourage student to go beyond basic membership requirements.

The student will be required to make an 85% on each exam to receive certification, but they can complete course without certification. Semester Finals will be at the end of each semester. Students may be exempt from finals in this class if they meet the exemption requirements. For the purposes of finals any 3 tardies will be equal to one unexcused absence.

Finals Exemption:

Grade AbsencesA 3B 2C 1

Late Work-will be accepted up to three weeks. Each week late will result in 10% grade reduction up to 30%. In the case the student has an excused absence, they will be given one day per excused absence to make up their work. There will be no time in class granted for this unless the student has already finished that weeks assignments. Students may come to the lab before school 7:30 am-7:55 am and after school 3:20 pm-4:00 pm. The student must notify the teacher of when they plan on attending. Under no circumstance may any of the class work be taken home

Students will show appropriate grammar and spelling level on all their assignments. A point will be deducted for every mistake in grammar, spelling, or punctuation.

Students will receive a grade sheet at the end of each nine weeks, and a progress sheet between each of these periods. These reports will show assignments completed and current average. Students may return these to class the following day, with parent/guardian signature, for 10 points extra credit.

Students will be responsible for completing their own work. At any point cheating is suspected, a zero will be given for the assignment, if the suspicion continues the instructor reserves the right to dismiss the student from the program.

Student Information

COMMUNICATION

TALKING during class is permitted as long as it is course related. Students participating in excessive talk will have points deducted from their daily grade. Repeated demonstrations may result in a formal counseling session to be documented in the student’s file and the loss of the privilege of conversing during office hours. Students are encouraged to seek help from their peers when you find yourself having a hard time with an assignment.

STUDENT AND INSTRUCTOR COMMUNICATION: It is your responsibility to contact the teacher to make arrangements for out of class help.

Suggestions are welcome. Some suggestions or concerns will need to be voiced to your instructor privately in a professional manner. Not every work situation is going to be perfect. You need to learn to communicate with your instructor and fellow classmates. You need to learn to solve your problems. It is important that you follow the chain of command when you

Page 14: Learning Competencies - Geary High School€¦  · Web viewDemonstrate proper phone etiquette and techniques.—conference calls, voice mail, pagers, video conferencing, transferring

wish to offer suggestions for improvements. Always consult your instructor about questions or problems.

NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION: You should exhibit professionalism at all times--do not take off your shoes, prop your feet on the desk or a chair, lounge on the floor, etc. You should refrain from loud sighing, complaining, or other disruptive behavior. Any disruptions will result in loss of points on the daily grade.

CELL PHONES/HEADPHONES: A school wide policy does not allow cell phones or headphones in the classroom unless the instructor has instructional plans for the phone. Any use of a cell phone that is unauthorized will be confiscated and turned into the office for parent retrieval. Cell phones may not be used to listen to music during class.

TEAMWORK is allowed only when we have indicated its need. On the other hand, if we have instructed you to participate in a group project or task, we expect you to give it your best. Businesses are emphasizing a team concept for problem solving and decision-making. This is your opportunity to begin that implementation. An evaluation form may be used to determine grades with each team project.

DRESS AND GROOMING

Appropriate dress will be worn.

It is important to realize that not only a person’s skill but also personal appearance and personality are valuable in obtaining and keeping a job. Grooming is a vital part of your training. Please shower, use deodorant, brush your teeth, and wear clean clothing every day. No visible hickies are allowed.

In order to encourage business-like appearance, all Wednesdays are designated as business dress days. Students are encouraged to wear clothing appropriate for business. Jeans or sweats are not considered appropriate business dress. If you have a question about the appropriateness of an item of clothing you wish to wear, visit with your instructor.

Begin now to gradually acquire clothing and accessories you can wear when you obtain employment. It is important to wear clothing, colors, and styles that look good on you.

Internet Policy

Page 15: Learning Competencies - Geary High School€¦  · Web viewDemonstrate proper phone etiquette and techniques.—conference calls, voice mail, pagers, video conferencing, transferring

You are not to load any programs on the computer unless instructed so by your instructor. This includes using personal USB devices.

Usage of video equipment, E-Mail and Internet privileges must be carried out in a professional manner when an assignment dictates the need to utilize such technology. Under no circumstance should this technology be used without prior approval of the instructor; further, this technology should not be utilized for personal or inappropriate use. Failure to abide within these guidelines will result in a reprimand and possibly termination of internet access or computer privileges. All students will establish an E-Mail account through the school ([email protected]) and may check E-Mail ONLY during the first or last five minutes of class, as designated by your instructor. NO CHAT ROOMS, iChat, FaceTime, changing your computer settings, downloading files or programs without advance approval of your instructor each time.

All students are required to sign the Computer Usage agreement. Students are not allowed to use any school technology with out this on file.

Any misuse of technology will result in one or more of the following depending on the severity of the misuse: deduction of daily points, parent notification, loss of technology privileges and in the case of damage it will be the students responsibility to financially replace the broken item. A list of replacement cost can be obtained by contacting the teacher.

BREAKS

All personal business, use of restroom facilities, phone calls, etc., should be completed during passing period only.

The student should leave the classroom only during emergencies. The student must sign the checkout sheet before leaving the classroom. Repeated check-out trips may result in a formal counseling session to be documented in the student’s file and may result in a deduction in the time management grade on your daily time sheet and/or loss of this privilege.

Students who come to class tardy will lose points on their daily time sheet. Excessive tardies will result in documentation on student’s file and/or disciplinary referral.

NO FOOD OR DRINK will be allowed in the classroom.

COMPLETION CERTIFICATE

A certificate is awarded to each person who has satisfactorily completed the following requirements:
