Titles For Allison, Cole Woods, And Mullet Pace W.H. At O.C.C. Championship Tournament
For the second year in a row the West Holmes High School wrestling team settled for team runner-up honors Saturday, February 6 at the ‘2016 Ohio Cardinal Conference Varsity Championship Tournament’ held at Ashland High School in Ashland, Ohio.
The Knights (205 pts.) were able to place all 12 wrestlers in the top-four, but Ashland (279) filled all 14 weight classes placing 13 in the top-three and had 8 individual champions to West Holmes’ 3 champions making the difference in the team score. Mansfield Madison (147) finished third in the team standings.
West Holmes was led by champions Josiah Allison (Sr., 126 lbs.), Cole Woods (Sr., 138 lbs.), and Jake Mullet (Jr., 182 lbs.). The titles were career firsts for Allison and Mullet while Woods copped his third O.C.C. crown, and was tabbed in a vote of the coaches as the ‘2016 Ohio Cardinal Conference Wrestler of the Year’.

Woods’ title was also his 148th career win to move him into second place on the all-time W.H.H.S. wrestling career wins list. Woods needs 9 more victories to surpass Knights legend Colt Sponseller’s mark of 156 career wins set between 2004 – 2007.
The Knights also got runner-ups finishes from Thane Kaufman (Soph.,106 lbs.), Skylar Cline (Soph., 145 lbs.), Ricky Dutter (Sr., 152 lbs.), and Michael Kashuba (Sr., 170 lbs.). Taking home bronze medals were Harley Batdorf (Soph., 120 lbs.), Cody Woods (Jr., 132 lbs.), and Alex Walker (Jr., 195 lbs,) while Damon Harris (Sr., 220 lbs.) and Isaac Hoxworth (Sr., 285 lbs.) place fourth.
“We’ll take second”, West Holmes mat boss Jeff Woods said following the tournament. “Everybody placed and I’m happy with that. It was fun to see Josiah and Jake both get their first O.C.C. crowns. Cole did what we knew he could do.”
Allison (3 – 0) scored two fall wins to move into his second conference championship match where he fought out a 6 – 2 decision win over Caleb Gibson (Mansfield Madison). With the match knotted at 2 – 2 with less than a minute to go in the match, Allison hit a takedown and then turned Gibson to get 2 near fall points before riding Gibson out to clinch his title.
Woods notched a pair of fall wins to move into the championship bout where he produced a workman-like 9 – 3 decision win over Kris Collins (Ashland) for a 3 – 0 day and O.C.C. title No. 3.
Receiving a championship quarterfinals bye Mullet (2 – 0) scored a fall win the semifinals to move into his first O.C.C. title bout where he stopped Brycen Light (Ashland) with a fall at 2:29 for his gold medal.
Kaufman faced long-time adversary Clay Eagle (Ashland) in the 106 lbs. title bout and Eagle had the upper hand posting a 6 – 1 decision win over Kaufman. In the 145 lbs. first-place match Cline faced Rickey Maffett (Ashland) and fell by fall @ :59 while Dutter dropped his championship match to Sid Ohl (Ashland) by fall at the 3:19 mark. Kashuba faced Devin Goschinski (Ashland) in the their title match-up (170 lbs.) and dropped a 10 – 3 decision.
Batdorf stopped Matt Mendiola (Orrville) at the 2:32 mark for his bronze medal while Cody Woods won a 4 – 2 decision over Tyler Elkins (Orrville) and Walker scored a fall win at 3:37 over Ozzy Cross (Mansfield Madison) for the their third-place finishes.
Harris lost to A. J. Adams (Lexington) by fall at 3:34 in the 220 lbs. third-place match and Hoxworth was stopped by Sean Williams (Mansfield Madison) at :13 in the heavy-weight bronze medal bout.
“Everyone contributed today,” coach Woods said of his team’s performance. “Seven kids got to the finals and the other five made it to the third-place match. It would’ve been nice to get some better finishes, but all in all we did pretty well. It was a fun day.”
For their first ever O.C.C. championships both Josiah Allison and Jake Mullet were lauded by coach Woods with the Knights Varsity Wrestling Hammer of the Week Award.

Middle School Squad Runner-Up At O.A.C. State Team Duals Qualifier, Advances To State Championship Tournament
The West Holmes Wrestling Club middle school squad finished 3 – 1 Saturday, February 6 at the ‘2016 Ohio Athletic Committee Junior High State Team Duals Tournament District Qualifier’ at Northwestern High School near West Salem, Ohio to score runner-up honors earning a qualified berth in the O.A.C. state team duals championship tournament.
The squad made up of all West Holmes Middle School grapplers and two Triway Middle School wrestlers, Alex Merwin and Luke Daley, (the O.A.C. allows up to 4 wrestlers on an entered team that do not attend the entered teams home school) opened their pool wrestling with a 70 – 21 drubbing of Northwestern, followed by a 93 – 0 shut-out over Bucyrus and followed with an 84 – 7 shellacking of Elyria Northwood.
The undefeated pool mark moved the club into the championship match where they faced a powerful Lakewood St. Edward squad. The W.H. team did their best in the match-up and wrestled respectably well but fell to St. Ed’s by a 62 – 30 count.
“It was a good day for us”, coach Andy Toye said of his team’s performance. “We were definitely in the easier pool as the other teams were not very competitive. We did have some good individual matches though.”
When asked how he would describe the championship match-up with St. Ed’s coach Toye stated, “The finals match with (St.) Ed’s was tough, but we also had some good performances there as well.”
West Holmes wrestlers finishing the day with 4 – 0 marks were Cael Woods (8th Grade, 86 lbs.), Tyler Masters (8th Grade, 92 lbs.), Jarek Snow (8th Grade, 116 lbs.), and Cruz Alexander (8th Grade, 134 lbs.).
Knights posting 3 – 1 marks were Jack Welsh (7th Grade, 74 lbs.), Gavin Harter (8th Grade, 98 lbs.), Walker Uhl (8th Grade, 104 lbs.), Hunter Bowling (8th Grade, 116 lbs.), Nick Morris (8th Grade, 128 lbs.), and Stephen Baldridge (7th Grade, 150 lbs.).
Kendel Weber (8th Grade, 80 lbs.), Gavin Greer (7th Grade, 122 lbs.), and Chase Middlesworth (8th Grade, 205 lbs.) all finished 2 – 2. Hayden Baker (8th Grade) and Brayden Myers (7the Grade) each went 1 – 1 at 142 lbs.
Merwin and Daley, the Triway wrestlers on the W.H.W.C. team, each finished 3 – 1.
Picking up exhibition wins were Sean Over (7th Grade, 80 lbs.), Erik Marmet (7th Grade, 98 lbs.), and Justin Stapleton (7th Grade, 116 lbs.). Max Pratt (7th Grade, 128 lbs.) went 0 – 2.
The O.A.C. state team duals championship tournament will be held March 6 at Worthington Kilbourne High School in Columbus, Ohio.

Varnes’ 5th Place Best For Attack Team At O.Y.W.A. District
The Holmes Area Wrestling Club elementary Attack Team had tough day on the mats Sunday, February 7 as Conner Varnes fifth-place showing was the best of 9 Attack Team wrestlers competing at the ‘2016 Ohio Youth Wrestling Association District Championship Tournament’ at GlenOak High School in Canton, Ohio.
“It was a tough day for the Attack Team”, volunteer head coach Jarret Mathie said following the tournament. “We lost a lot of close matches. When you have number 1 seeds coming out of a sectional go 0 – 2, that speaks volumes for the quality of wrestling at our district.”
Varnes (6th Grade, 90 lbs.) finished 4 – 2 for the fifth-place and will be an alternate from the GlenOak district for Sunday’s (2/14) O.Y.W.A. state championship tournament. Varnes won his
opening round match by fall (:57) then got knocked into the consolation bracket after suffering a quarterfinals loss by fall.
Varnes fought back through the consolation bracket with a fall win (:37) and a 5 – 3 decision victory to reach the consolation semifinals where a win would guarantee a state berth. It was not to be as Varnes fell to Jordan Marsh (Magnolia Sandy Valley) by fall (1:59) missing out on a state qualifier spot. Varnes rebounded in the fifth-place match posting a 14 – 2 tech fall victory over Nate Gager (Uniontown Lake Blue).
“I want to honor Conner as well”, coach Mathie said of naming Varnes as his Holmes Area Wrestling Club Attack Team Hammer of the Week. “After losing in the quarterfinals he came back through the wrestle-backs to get to the ‘go to state’ match where he got up ended. In a short turn around, Conner came back and scored a convincing tech fall to secure fifth and the state alternate. The toughness he showed speaks to his character.”
Dylan Strouse (6th Grade, 73 lbs.) finished 2 – 2 while Peyton Martin (3rd Grade, 52 lbs.), Logan Vansickle (4th Grade, 60 lbs.), and Blake Norman (5th Grade, 76 lbs.) ended their day with 1 – 2 records.
Finishing 0 – 2 were Justice Hendrix (3rd Grade, 56 lbs.), Mason Taylor (5th Grade, 64 lbs.), Curtis Sampsel (6th Grade, 86 lbs.), and Caleb Gregory (5th Grade, 95 lbs.).

“Regardless of what happened, my hat is off to the all the boys who competed today”, coach Mathie stated. “As a coach, all you can ask of your team is they give it their all every match. They did all season. Sometimes things don’t go as planned, but we will take everything we can from our experiences today and apply them to next season.”
The Attack Team tied for 27th of the 38 teams in the tournament with 26.5 points. Uniontown Lake Blue just edged out Massillon Perry (181 – 180) for the district championship. Gnadenhutten Indian Valley (163.5) placed third.

THE WEEK’S SCHEDULE
Duals For High School, Tournament For Middle School Team Wrestlers This Week
The West Holmes wrestling program will see all levels of wrestling in action this week.
The high school team will wrap up their dual meet portion of the season Wednesday, February 10 when they host Ontario, Navarre Fairless and Warsaw River View in super duals action in ‘The Dungeon’ at West Holmes High School near Millersburg, Ohio beginning at 6:00 p.m. Prior to the meet, 7 Knights will be honored on ‘Senior Night’ – wrestlers Josiah Allison, Cole Woods, Ricky Dutter, Michael Kashuba, Damon Harris, and Isaac Hoxworth, and statistician Paige Miller.

West Holmes will wrestle two of the three visiting teams and if they match-up with Ontario and Fairless it will be the first time in years the Knights have faced either the Warriors or Falcons in a dual meet. West Holmes has dominated River View in recent years owning a 7 year win streak over the Black Bears going back to the 2008 season, including last season’s 54 – 21 victory. The two teams didn’t wrestle in 2010 when the dual was originally postponed a week due to winter weather, and then eventually canceled when inclement weather struck again.
Members of the West Holmes middle school team will battle Sunday, February 14 in the ‘2016 Ohio Athletic Committee Junior High State Championship Tournament District Qualifier’ being held at Steubenville High School in Steubenville, Ohio. A top-6 placement advances that wrestler to the March 12 & 13 O.A.C. state tournament. Looking to repeat as district champion is Cael Woods, along with Walker Uhl (3rd in ’15), and Stephen Baldridge (4th). Kendel Weber (7th) just missed an automatic state berth last season, but made the state tourney as a district alternate. Several other Knights middle school wrestlers are expected to compete. Wrestling begins at 9:30 a.m.
Biddy wrestling registration for the Holmes Area Wrestling Club takes place Thursday, February 11 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the West Holmes Middle School wrestling room. Biddy wrestling is an introductory program for kindergarten through 6th grade youth and no experience is necessary. Rohskopf Clinches Dual Meet Win For N.C. State
Former West Holmes wrestler Max Rohskopf scored the clinching win Saturday, February 6 in the North Carolina State University (No. 3 NWCA/USA Today Coaches Poll) wrestling team’s 19 – 15 victory over the University of Nebraska (No. 11) in Lincoln, Nebraska.
With the Wolfpack holding on to a 16 – 12 lead with two matches left in the meet, Rohskopf (Jr., 165 lbs., No. 4 Intermat Poll) stepped onto the mat against the Cornhuskers Austin Wilson (No. 14) and scored a 4 – 1 decision win to sew up the meet for N. C. State. After a scoreless first period, Rohskopf started the second stanza on top and scored a two-point near fall. In the third period Rohskopf worked an escape and was awarded a stalling penalty point against Wilson to clinch the win and meet. The former Knights three-time state pacer (3rd in 2013 and ’12, 7th in ’11) and four-time state qualifier is now 11 – 1 on the season, 11 - 0 at 165 lbs. His only loss occurred when Rohskopf bumped up to 174 lbs. in the Wolfpack’s dual against Oklahoma State University in December.

Rohskopf will get back on the mats Friday, February 12 when the Wolfpack hosts Virginia Tech University (No. 10) in a key A.C.C. battle, and then close out the dual meet regular season Sunday, February 14 when the University of Missouri (No. 5) visit Raleigh, North Carolina.
Cox Still Looking For First Win Of Season
West Holmes 2013 graduate Caleb Cox went winless this week as the sophomore 184 lbs. wrestler at Muskingum University continues to battle for that first victory of the season.
Cox competed Saturday, February 6 at the ‘John Summa Invitational Tournament’ at Baldwin-Wallace University in Berea, Ohio where he finished 0 - 2. After a first round bye Cox fell to eventual champion Riley LeFever (Wabash College) at 2:47 and then after two consolation byes lost to Ryan Shank (Waynesburg University), who went on to finish third, by fall at 1:47. Cox’s week began Tuesday, February 2 when he lost by fall (1:12) to Dillen Decker (Heidelberg University) in the Muskies 45 – 4 loss to the Student Princes.
Cox (0 – 11) will look to break his winless streak Tuesday, February 9 when the Muskies host John Carroll University.
