Legal and Ethical Issues in Prescribing July 17, 2015 8:00 am – 12:15 pm Red Cross Ballroom Ft. Vancouver National Historic Site, Vancouver, WA Program Description Nurse prescribers in the Pacific NW have a broad scope of practice which includes scheduled, compounded, and offlabel prescriptions. The legal landscape for practice in Oregon and Washington has become more complex with the addition of medical and nonmedical marijuana, broad prescribing protocols for pharmacists and other healthcare providers, naloxone distribution for opioid overdose, telehealth, and changes in pain management laws. In addition to legal considerations, nurse prescribers often experience ethical conflicts regarding when, how, and what to prescribe, including when to discharge a patient from care. This presentation will update participants on current law as well as best practice considerations when prescribing for patients in Oregon and Washington. Program Purpose Legal and Ethical Issues in Prescribing will provide learners the opportunity to outline the current law as well as best practice considerations when prescribing for patients in Oregon and Washington.
