LEICA NA2 The classical level from Leica Geosystems

The NA2 universal auto-matic level meets allrequirements regardingprecision, convenience and reliability.

It was designed by sur-veyors and developmentengineers with years ofexperience and who knowwhat a field instrument has to be able to do.

The NA2 soon pays for itself, because it can beused for all types of sur-veying job; on buildingsites for routine levelling, in engineering projects, and for geodetic control atall levels of accuracy.

Universal application

• Levelling of all types andall orders of accuracy

• Precise levelling andsettlement determinationson buildings

• Routine heighting for the construction of roads, railways, pipelines, tunnels and so forth

• Setting-out work andcontrol measurements onthe construction site

• Area levelling of highaccuracy

• Tacheometric levellingwith the K-version on flatterrain by combining stadia and angular meas-urements with height readings

• Deformation measure-ment and monitoring ofbridges

Quickly set up, simple to use

Strong tripods

In principle, the NA2 can be set up on any LeicaGeosystems tripod. Inpractice, for all-roundpurposes, we recommendthe heavy-duty GST20telescopic-leg tripod. For precise levelling theGST40 fixed-leg tripod is suitable because of itsextreme rigidity.

The modular relationshipbetween instrument andtripod is an advantagewhen transport space islimited.

Centring is easy

The circular level onlyneeds to be centredapproximately to bring thecompensator well into itsworking range of ~30', andso setting-up goes quicker.

The bubble is viewedpositively via a pentaprismand is monitored down the eyepiece.

Play-free footscrews

The pitch of the smooth-running and backlash-freefootscrews is such that the bubble can be centredin a very short time.

Independent of temperature

Unlike the tubular level of a traditional instrument, theNA2 universal automaticlevel is relatively insensitiveto direct solar radiation and an umbrella need only be considered for the mostprecise levelling.

Adjust the line of sight automatically

Easy to level up

The advantage of thisinstrument is that, as soonas the bubble is centred, the line of sight is horizontalfor all pointings of thetelescope. The observer isfreed of the time-consumingcentring procedure involvedwith the traditional tubularlevel, and can concentrateon the business of staffreadings.

Minimum maintenance

In the unlikely event thatthe compensator isdamaged (and this can onlyhappen as a result ofextremely harsh treatment)it is replaced easily, beingheld only by three screws.

Push-button control –added security

With most automatics onetaps the tripod or instru-ment to check if the com-pensator is functioning.Leica Geosystems offers afar more sophisticatedsolution.

Pressing the button underthe NA2 eyepiece gives thecompensator a gentle tap,so that you see the staffimage swing smoothly

away and then float gentlyback to give the horizontalline of sight. This check, which takes less than a second, is technicallyperfect, as the pendulumitself is activated andswings through its fullrange. It is also immediatelyapparent if the bubble is not centred.

Robust and automatic

The compensator isessentially a pendulum with a prism (4).

The suspension systemcomprises four flexed tapes (1) made of a specialalloy to ensure faultlessfunctioning even at extremetemperatures. The compen-sator, which is locatedbetween the focusing lensand the crosshair reticle, is pneumatically dampedagainst mechanical vibra-tion and is screened againstmagnetic fields.

Top-class optics

Top-class optics

The telescope is of excellentquality and gives a bright,high-contrast, erect image, even in poor light – anessential for accuratelevelling. With the standardeyepiece the magnificationis 32×, the optimum formost applications of theinstrument. Optionaleyepieces are available; the40× may be preferred forprecise levelling, the 25×in hot, shimmer conditions.Eyepiece exchange takesonly a second or so.

The focusing knob has acoarse/fine movement:– coarse, for rapid setting

with minimum turning– fine, for the final delicate

touch to give the perfectimage.

Fatigue-free viewing

The reticle has:– a single horizontal hair

for reading normal staffs– a wedge-shaped hair for

use with invar staffs– stadia hairs for distance

measurement and three-wire levelling.

The general layout of the controls, the smoothfriction-braked rotation of the instrument, and theendless horizontal drivewith bilateral knobs, all combine to make theinstrument easy to use.

At an advantage on unstable ground

If a tubular level is used on unstable ground it tiltsout of range and has to becontinuously reset. Bycontrast, the pendulum ofthe NA2 “compensates”and keeps the line of sighthorizontal.

Angle measurement with the NAK2

Civil engineers and contrac-tors often require a circlefor angle measurement and setting-out work. Evensimple detail surveys, bytaking angle, distance andheight, and plotting withthe polar method, can bedone with a level.

The model NAK2 has aninternal glass circle whichis read via a scale micro-scope and which can be setto any value by turning the rim around the base of the instrument.

High-performance accessories for precise levelling

GPM3 parallel-plate micrometer

This optional accessoryslips over the telescopeobjective and blendsperfectly with the smoothlines of the NA2. With a compensator settingaccuracy of ±0.3“ (equiva-lent to 0.01 mm in 10 m)and a micrometer readingto 0.1 mm direct and 0.01 mm by estimation, theNA2 with GPM3 is an idealcombination for preciselevelling, deformation studies, and even opticaltooling. The micrometerdrive for raising and lower-ing the line of sight is con-veniently located and read-ings are taken on a glassscale viewed through aneyepiece just above thetelescope eyepiece. Thisoptical reading system, which is digital apart fromthe last and estimatedfigure in the metric andinch versions, is superior to the usual metal drumsystem.

GPM6 parallel-plate micrometer

There are tasks for which a micrometer is needed, yet for which the very highaccuracy of the GPM3 is not essential.

To meet this requirement, a simpler micrometerattachment, the GPM6 with drum reading, is available for the NA2.

The GPM6 fits on to thetelescope objective in thesame manner as the GPM3,but the graduation isengraved on a metal drum.

Eyepiece accessories forspecialized tasks

Because of the bayonetfastening of the inter-changeable eyepiece, alltheodolite eyepiece acces-sories can be used with the NA2.

• Diagonal eyepiece forobserving from above, below, and from the side;useful in cramped spaces

• Eyepiece lamp for con-verting the NA2 into a horizontal collimator for laboratory work

• Autocollimation eye-piece for setting machine parts and instrument components preciselyvertical

Abundant accessories; many applications

Effortless focusing

The rugged NA2 is indifferentto weather conditions and is extremely reliable in therough world of the buildingsite. The pendulum compen-sator is protected againstknocks and shocks. There isa highly-effective vibration-damping mechanism.

The high setting accuracyensures that the line ofsight stays put. The attach-able parallel-plate micro-meter renders the NA2 ideal for precise fine levelling.

The instantaneous checkfacility with the push-buttoncontrol not only makes work easier; it alsopromotes confidence.

The convenient, well-arranged controls aredesigned for maximum convenience. The bilateral, endless horizontal drive promotes rapid fine-pointing.

The instrument is quickly set up with the three rapid-action footscrews. Their self-adjusting threads make subsequent resettingunnecessary.

Telescope with excellently-corrected optics for bright,high-contrast images. All optical components arecoated on both sides.

The erect image seen downthe telescope is quickly and accurately brought intofocus with the convenientrapid and fine focusingknob.

Additional items such as the parallel-plate micro-meter, the laser eyepiece, or theodolite eyepieceaccessories, offer almostunlimited possibilities.
