II. GRAMMAR REVIEW:

Topic: Sentence Patterns - Complex(5-6 minutes)

The basic composition of a complex sentence is as follows:

one independent clause + one or more dependent clauses

Ex .Although the League of Nations was abolished, the United Nations was established. 。

Dependent Clause Independent Clause An independent clause is a clause that can stand alone as a sentence. It contains the main idea in the sentence; as such, it is also known as the main clause. On the other hand, a dependent clause is a clause that cannot stand alone as a full sentence. It functions to support the main clause; hence, it is also called the subordinate clause.

Connectors are always at the beginning of the dependent clause.

a) Cause/Effect as, as such, because, since, so that

b) Place/Manner how, however, where, wherever

c) Possibility/Conditions if, whether, unless

d) Relation that, which, who, whom

e) Time after, as, before, since, until, when, whenever, while,

f) Comparison/Contrast although, even though, though, whereas, while

Connectors relate the idea in the independent clause with that in the dependent clause.

Remember: The idea in the independent clause is more important than the idea and information in the dependent clause.

Examples:

a) Cause/Effect As the Treaty of Versailles failed, the League of Nations had to be replaced.

b) Place/Manner Wherever a person is tortured, a violation of human rights is committed.

c) Possibility/Conditions If a certain country does not respect intellectual property, the World Intellectual Property Organization will intervene.

d) Relation The International Red Cross Movement aims to help people who are victims of armed conflicts.

e) Time The United Nations was formed after World War II ended.

f) Comparison/Contrast Although the globally accepted standards of behavior are established, a few countries still do not adhere to them.

Note: The dependent clauses have been italicized to distinguish them from the independent clauses.
