Art Where Wild Things Are

On Saturday, May 30, the American River Natural History Association (ARNHA, which operates Effie Yeaw Nature Center) and The Sacramento Fine Arts Center will present the sixth annual Art Where Wild Things Are, an art show, auction and gala celebrating interpretations of local nature subjects. This event brings together art patrons, philanthropists, artists and nature-lovers for what has become the most important fundraiser of the year for the Nature Center, a unique education and visitor center operated as a community service through a public/non-profit partnership.

The evening gala will feature elegant food, beverages, music, and silent and live auctions with the charismatic David Sobon as auctioneer and Dave Bender as Master of Ceremonies, and Honorary Chairpersons Moni and Greg Kondos and Congresswoman Doris Matsui. Featured artists include David Peterson, David Lobenberg, Tim Collum, Gregory Kondos and Maria Winkler.

A special segment of the live auction raises money specifically for ARNHA’s Urban Nature Program which provides free programs to Title 1 Schools from throughout the greater Sacramento area. During this school year, ARNHA pro-vided over $23,000 worth of free programs. For many students, this was their first time to a nature preserve or even to the Lower American River.

All of the funds raised by this event will allow the Center to continue providing science, history and environmental programs for adults and children year round. A visit to the undeveloped woodland and replica Maidu Village is like stepping back in time, and an up-close visit with the Center ’s birds of prey can be truly unforgettable. The Nature Center has a special history in this community, and the support of caring people is what keeps the Center open and available for future generations.

Amtrak Train Days Make a Stop at the Railroad Museum

All aboard for rail-related fun! In a partnership with Amtrak, Cali-fornia State Parks and the Cali-fornia State Railroad Museum are proud to present a special Amtrak Train Days event at the Railroad Museum – that includes FREE admission all weekend -- on June 6 and 7. Taking the place of Na-tional Train Day, this expanded and FREE two-day event is one of many happening across the country, all designed to celebrate the love of trains through a traveling, community-centric experience under the new name of Amtrak Train Days.

In addition to exploring North America’s most popular rail museum, Amtrak Train Days visitors to the California State Railroad Museum will enjoy viewing a variety of special trains on display including the Amtrak Exhibit Train, a fun and interactive Chuggington Kids De-pot, specialty merchandise, and much more. Amtrak will also showcase a “Reasons to Ride the Train” exhibit -- a dynamic experience that allows attendees to see, hear, and feel the benefi ts of train travel through interactive elements and informative graphics.

Visitors to Old Sacramento State Historic Park will also have the opportunity to enjoy excur-sion train rides behind the vintage steam locomotive Granite Rock No.10 that weekend on-the-hour from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. (regular train ride ticket prices apply). Regular excursion train tickets cost $12 for adults, $6 for youths (ages 6-17), and ages fi ve and under ride free. Train ride tickets are available to book online in advance at www.csrmf.org or can be purchased in-person starting at 10:30 a.m. the day of the train ride (based on availability) at the Sacramento Southern Railroad ticket offi ce located on Front Street between J and Streets.
