For 2 years, 4 months and 10 days, explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark explored the Louisiana Territory and the Western frontier up to the Pacific Ocean. They traveled with 40 men and a Shoshone guide named Sacagawea and her young son.They traveled by boat, by foot and on horseback. They faced many dangers, but made many discoveries about the land and its Native people. This journey became known as the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Here is their story.

In 1803, the United States doubled in size because of the Louisiana Purchase. In 1804, President Thomas Jefferson asked explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to explore the Louisiana Territory. Territory means an area of land.

On May 21, 1804, Lewis, Clark and 40 other men left St. Louis, Missouri to go on a journey that lasted 2 years, 4 months and 10 days to explore the new land. Expedition means journey.

1st Goal: to find a water route
to the Pacific Ocean
2nd Goal: to report on all the
plants and animals in the territory
