Helicopter paths crossing runway axis

While transiting in the D-class Paris CTR some helicopters (mainly Sécurité Civile and SAMU) might have to

cross the runway finals. The separation between VFR helicopters and commercial traffic is performed with traffic

information and visual acquisition. Helicopters cross the runway axes in accordance with aircraft on final.

Windshear / Standard API RWY 25

In specific weather conditions, notably strong winds (25kt to 35kt) from the southwest (200° to 220°), windshear

could be experienced on final for runway 25.

Although not determined with certainty, air flows created by the Seine Valley under the final flight path for runway

25 could partially explain this phenomenon.

In the case of a missed approach to runway 25, windshear on final can result in the standard path with its left turn

climbing through 700ft not being followed.

This turn to the left has been devised to avoid

converging conflict with departures from runway

24.

Please inform ATC of any windshear experi-

enced on final for runway 25; the controller

will adapt departures from runway 24 accord-

ingly.

Use of visual docking guidance system

Orly airport is equipped with advanced visual docking guidance system on the majority of stands. When the visual

docking system is activated, crews must follow displayed instructions.

When not provided or if the system is not active, stand entries will be compulsary performed under instructions

from a marshaller.

Stand entries without an activated visual docking system or a marshaller are forbidden. In such a case, crews will :

Hold position on taxiway centerline, Not enter the stand, Contact immediately ATC.

PAPI settings

PAPI approach slope is set in accordance with glide path signal.

PAPI is set with an eye to aerial height (EAH) corresponding to the most demanding aircraft (B747).

Pilots whose EAH is significantly lower may therefore receive information from PAPI indicating they are too low, while their antenna follows glide path plan.

Reduced runway spacing

An aircraft on approach to RWY 06 or RWY 25 may receive a landing clearance while following another landing aircraft which may still be on the runway if the landing distance available is at least 2,500m. Operational Conditions of use : dry runway, visibility > 5 km, cloud base height ≥ 1000 ft. The landing clearance includes the words “reduced spacing”.

RUNWAY

HIRO procedures

HIRO procedures (High Intensity Runway Operations) are in force and active 24/7 at Paris Orly Airport. Pilots are expected to ensure minimum runway occupancy time (MROT). Before landing, crews must plan the exit taxiway minimizing runway occupancy time, based on landing perfor-mances. If necessary, the preferential clearance taxiway is given on ATIS; warn Orly ATC at first contact if the performances of the day do not allow its use. At take-off, when cleared by ATC, pilots must line up and take off without delay.

Warning

Orly airport has features (pushback directly onto taxiways, compact taxiway system… ) making aircraft ground movements complex.

Any taxiing mistake may lead to taxiing conflicts or collisions risks while taxiing.

Pilots must respect taxi clearances.

Risk of confusion with taxiway W47 when taxiing on W1

When taxiing westward on W1, near L4, it is necessary to turn right heading north in order to stay on W1.

In case of error in pursuing straight on W47, aircraft whose wingspan is greater than 36m must either continue to runway 06 or be towed by ground equipment

Upon identification of taxiing error, pilots must immediately contact ATC.

Taxiway markings are reinforced to avoid taxiing errors at this taxiway crossing.

HOT SPOT ! Runway incursion risk Paris-Orly features a HOT SPOT runway incursion located at the crossing of runway 02/20 and W5/W31 taxi-ways.

Caution, at this location, when taxiing eastward on W1 it is necessary to turn left to stay on W1. Failure to do so, could lead to a runway 02/20 incursion via W5.

REMINDER :

Only ATC may give clearance to cross any runway,

It is mandatory to read back all instructions before crossing any runway

HOT SPOT location and taxiing on W1 :

Authorized taxi paths (centerline marking and lighting)

To avoid any risk of taxiway excursion or collision with an obstacle, any path without a centerline marking is

prohibited.

Any turn whose centerline marking show an angle is forbidden. An authorized turn is necessarily shown by a

curved centerline marking (yellow marking sometimes completed by green centerline lights) .

The figures below represent examples of turns.

B52, B61 et B62 stand entry and exit paths

It is mandatory to taxi via WG (maxspan 36m) taxiway when entering B52, B61 and B62 stands. Taxi via the un-

marked area (no centerline marking nor lighting) behind Bravo stands is forbidden.

It is mandatory to push back from stands B52, B61 and B62 to one of the two following areas:

Pushback area facing North,

Pushback area facing South.

Any other pushback path is forbidden.

Crews must imperatively transmit the pushback clearance given by ATC « facing North » or « facing South » to

staff in charge of pushback.

ARRIVALS

DEPARTURES/PUSHBACK PATHS

Speed limitation below FL100

In A-class Paris TMA (part 2 to 10), below FL100 speed is restricted to IAS 250 kt maximum except if there are

safety reasons. In addition to European legislative rulings, this French-initiated limitation has been adopted for the

following reasons:

The analysis of safety events shows that a too rapid approach speed (“too high, too fast”) is a well-known

contributive factor of non-compliant or unstabilised approaches, which could potentially lead to a CFIT or a

runway excursion on landing.

In France, A-class airspaces below FL100

are high density traffic spaces where an IAS

250kt restriction speed facilitates the blend-

ing of the traffic and ease its management.

However in case of a departing ACFT:

freed from environmental needs,

climbing to FL100 or higher,

the ATC can give a speed greater than IAS 250kt in order to speed up the traffic or to quickly create a separation

between two successive departing flights. This instruction must be followed immediately.

Transfer from Orly TWR to Orly DEP

After take-off, Orly Departure FREQ 127.750 MHz is not announced. Preset it and wait for TWR instruction to

contact Departure.
