Living with ALS: ¶,NQRZLWGRHVQ·WGHÀQHPH·Kate Hibbard

Managing Editor

[email protected]

“I have a one and a half year old son at home... I can’t pick him up when he cries.”

Tim Dobos, a junior majoring in applied physics and nanotechnolo-gy, and a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, is living with Amyotrophic Lat-eral Sclerosis (ALS) - also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

ALS is an incurable disease that is sporadic - only about 5 percent of cases are genetic. There are no other known cases of ALS in Tim’s family.

Eventually, ALS with suffocate him.

Tim was diagnosed last April and has since been learning to balance his disease with being a student, husband and father. He feels his son’s growth is bittersweet, full of dark irony.

“He’s walking and running and smiling and laughing. He babbles a lot,” Tim said. “As Grove learned to walk, I lost my ability to walk. As he’s learning to talk, I’m losing my ability to do so.”

Tim is wheelchair-bound and, af-ter talking for a long period of time, feels fatigued and hoarse. Just last

spring, he was struggling to walk to his classes - he fell often and carrying his backpack was exhausting.

Despite his struggles, Tim is hop-ing to attend graduate school for a Masters degree, then follow that up with a Doctorate. After completing his education, he wants to go into neurol-RJ\HYHQWKRXJKLWPLJKWEHGLIÀFXOWHe plans to study ALS because, com-pared to such diseases as cancer, not much research has been done for it.

“I could choose some easier way, but I don’t want to,” Tim said.

But to make it that far, Tim needs to make it to graduation. And, to be the best student he can be, he devotes a lot of time to his health.

He gets his treatments through Veterans Affairs. Many of his appoint-

ments are at a clinic in State College. However, due to a lack of equipment, Tim often has to travel to Altoona - to see specialists, or to Pittsburgh - for surgery or tests.

“Health has to take a priority over academics,” Tim said. “I desire to do well - to be the best student I can be. But I can’t do that if I’m not in good health.”

Tim said he gets through the days thanks to his family. His twin broth-er, Stephen, is on family medical leave from work in their hometown of Mead-ville, Pa. to help Tim and his wife, Robyn, with Grove. He said he also gets help from a nurse, Sarah Buttorf, and from his and Robyn’s parents.

He also wouldn’t be where he is without the community, he said. Tim has received help from the local Vet-HUDQV RI )RUHLJQ :DUV VHUYLFH RIÀ-cers as well as LHU students like the members of Phi Mu Delta, University Players and others. He said they’re acknowledgement of his disease helps bring awareness to ALS.

“A lot of people in my situation wouldn’t want to be in the public eye, but that’s why ALS is so out of the pic-ture. So I will gladly share my story,” 7LPVDLG´,NQRZ$/6GRHVQ·WGHÀQHme. I’m a physicist. That’s who I am. I’m a father. I’m a brother. I’m a son.”

Straight out of Columbus Ohio, The Saturday Giant is a one-man band like no other. Using layers of guitars, key-boards, vocals, drums, bass, and even beat-boxing, The Saturday Giant creates an incredible rock performance all on his own.

He impressively performs all of these skills without the use of pre-recorded samples- it’s completely live! His per-formance not only provides an incredible array of resonating sound, but thought provoking and unique lyrics.

The Saturday Giant has produced three EPs since start-ing up in 2010, while playing shows all over the United

States. Last year as part of his tour, The Saturday Giant played in Lock Haven at Av-enue 209. He made his return this Wednesday, Sept 24, to the community coffee shop stage. He used Avenue 209 for the kick off of a 39 day tour.

This tour will serve as a test drive for his full length album in the spring of 2015. Previous songs from his EP have evolved during the last year throughout his multiple tours.

So he is giving them the WLPHWRUHDFKÀQDOYHUVLRQVthrough live performance. He wants to make sure he has the version he wants before record-ing and releasing the album in 2015. Innovative, fresh, but still holding on to that classic alternative vibe, The Saturday Giant is the act not to miss.

Season two of “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” premiered Tuesday night on ABC. The show started off with an amazing scene from the 1940’s starring the fabulous Peggy Carter and the Howling Commandos that immediately drew in the audience.

7KH ÀQDOH OHIW 6+,(/' EURNHQand reborn under the new director, Phil Coulson (played by Clark Gregg), who seems to be struggling under the new responsibility, working to ÀQG QHZ DJHQWV 7KRXJK *UHJJhad little screen time compared to episodes of the previous season, he still had the same endearing pres-ence that we have grown to love.

Meanwhile Skye (played by Chloe Bennet) and May (played by Ming-na Wen) are kicking butt and tak-ing names.

Under the tutoring of May, Skye has become a hardened agent who won’t hesitate to shoot you. This new level of character development is interesting and I admire the possibilities and exploration that

sure to come. This new character development is clearly seen in the scene with the im-

prisoned Grant Ward (played by Brett Dalton). Her cold and stoic interaction was chilling but not as chilling as Ward, who has become insane.

Dalton’s portrayal was perfectly creepy, but I feel this change in nature is WRRGLIIHUHQWFRPSDUHGWRWKHVHDVRQÀQDOHLQZKLFK:DUGZDVSRUWUD\HG

much more stable. It was an interesting element though and I look forward to further exploration of his insanity.

This drastic change in Ward isn’t the only unsettling feature of the premiere. The introduction (barely an

introduction) of new agents, new headquarters, and new attitudes has left the show with a com-

pletely different tone and a slightly sour taste. This is most evident in the lack of cohe-

siveness of the cast and the artful humor that creates such an engaging atmosphere.

Overall the premiere was rather rough. Despite plenty of action, suspense and mys-tery, the changed tone and characters pre-

vented it from reaching it’s full potential. Still, there is plenty of opportunities for

improvement such as new fantastic plot lines and hopefully more Fitzsimmons scenes that don’t

make me want to rip my heart out.

Come on down to the Sloan Fine Art building Monday, Sept. 29 at 6pm to see the opening of the new art show that will be on display in the art gal-lery.

The paintings that are going to be on display are done by visiting artist, Joshua Willis, of Brooklyn, N.Y.. On Monday you will be able to hear him talk about the inspiration for his paint-ings.

Willis will be displaying paint-ings such as ‘Oblivion’ (2012), ‘Forever Overhead’ (2013) and ‘In the Shadow of the Machine’ (2014).

The focal point of the art show will be Willis’s series called, ‘In the Shadow of the Machine.’

7KLV VHULHV FRQVLVWV RI ÀYH ODUJHpaintings that depict landscapes, which Willis said are “based on photos I took of sections of old paintings hang-

ing in the Kunsthistoriches Museum in Vienna, where Peter Bruegel’s ‘Tower of Babel’ (1563) is housed.”

“The old paintings I photographed hang in galleries around the ‘Tower’, so I imagined the landscapes I painted to be the spaces surrounding the mythi-cal tower, and the paintings represent a turning away from crowded, claus-trophobic urban spaces,” Willis said.

Willis has done with most of his paintings by using oil paints and ap-plying them on to wood panels.

He has also made his paintings appear to be old and weathered. “To Joe from Amanda with Love,” read the post-it note attached to a mixtape found in the dark depths of a box in the Eagle Eye. Who Joe or Amanda are is still a mystery. But I’m certain they’re not here any more to reveal them-selves either.

I wasn’t even sure who the artist was on the CD until I popped it into my PC. I haven’t heard of The CO-OP and apparently neither has google. I’m still not sure who these people are on this mixtape, but it’s not bad. It’s clear this project didn’t have a huge budget but they made do with what they had. It’s almost wrong to call this album a mix tape, it’s more like a collaboration of rappers.

With that being said, this album is pretty hilarious, with songs being titled, “Bumpy Bridge” and “Trappin’ at momma house,” I knew I was in for a treat. Some of the rappers are pretty good but it feels hard to take any of it

seriously. They’re not really rapping about anything clear. One track, “Sex Game,” featured about a total of 10 words and a lot of mention to sex...obviously.

I don’t know what kind of rap these guys grew up lis-WHQLQJ WR EXW LW LQÁXHQFHG WKHP WRPDNH RQH VWUDQJHDO-bum. I wish I could interview Amanda and ask her where the heck she found this CD. It’s clear that Joe had the same thoughts as I did, and left it at the bottom of the box.

From Chicago, Illinois, the use-to-be-punk-rock and now pop rock band, “Fall Out Boy,” released a new single entitled “Centuries” on September 9th.

Pete Wentz, the bass player and spokesperson for the band stated in an interview, “We’re writ-ing. I was just listening to something Patrick had ZULWWHQLQWKHWUDLOHU6RZH·UHZULWLQJÀQLVKLQJout the album cycle in South Africa in September.” The boys are back from touring and are already writing new songs for their sixth studio album.

7KHWUDFN´&HQWXULHVµPXVLFDOO\ÀWVLQZLWKwhat most people are listening to today, and I think that’s what the boys are trying to do. The song does have rock elements tied to it, but it lacks consistency throughout it, meaning it is clas-VLÀHGDVPRUHRIDSRSVRQJWKDQ)DOO2XW%R\·Vold punk rock style.

Patrick Stump’s lead vocals does the song

justice with being able to hit those high notes with strength and dignity. Patrick’s vocals are solid in WKHLUQHZVLQJOHEXWWKHUHZHUHGHÀQLWHO\WLPHVRIoverkill.

The lyrics of the song conveys a good message, that whatever you do in life, you will be remem-bered for many years to come or for centuries. “Some legends are told, some turn to dust or to gold, but you will remember me, for centuries,” is the opening lyric of the song. It’s a powerful attention grabber that is about to enfold a story of “David and Goliath,” a story about going against the odds and going down into history.

If you are a huge Fall Out Boy fan and you liked their previous album, “Save Rock and Roll,” you will want to get your hands on this single.

If you can’t stand pop music and only like Fall Out Boy’s older stuff, then this isn’t the single for you and you might have grown out of Fall Out Boy. The boys are starting a new chapter of music and they are highly respected for that. “Centuries” is out in the itunes store and no date has been released for their new upcoming album.

Every fall and winter, countless students fall vic-

tim to colds and illnesses. Living so close together

in the dorms and the stress of a new semester puts

college students at higher risk for falling ill. From

stuffy noses, to sore throats and even headaches

and stomach aches, hot herbal tea can be one of the

best cures.

1. Chamomile

Considered by some to be a miracle herb, Cham-

RPLOHÀJKWVKHDGDFKHVLVDQDWXUDOGHFRQJHVWDQWsooths both the throat and stomach, boosts the im-

mune system and will put you to sleep. Chamomile

tea bags can be found anywhere. The cheaper bags

that contain only Chamomile work the best. Simply

steep the bag in boiling water for 3-5 minutes and

enjoy.

2. Cinnamon

Cinnamon is a known spice but how many real-

ly know of this herb’s healing properties? Not only

does it soothe the stomach and help sore throats,

LWÀJKWVFRQJHVWLRQDQGKHDGDFKHVDVZHOO6LPSO\pour boiling water over a teaspoon of ground cinna-

mon, let steep for 8-10 minutes and enjoy.

3. Peppermint

with stomach problems. Peppermint tea bags can

be found anywhere, including Walmart and Weis.

I favor the cheaper tea bags that have only pepper-

mint in them. Simply steep the tea bag in a cup of

boiling water for 2-4 minutes and enjoy the soothing

feeling in your stomach. What’s even better about

peppermint tea is that you can make it taste like

a melted candy cane, simply by sweetening it!

4. Ginger

We all know that drinking Ginger Ale helps

with stomach aches, right? Well, drinking Ginger

Making a tea with Thyme could actually make

your coughs more productive (meaning it helps

clean your lungs out faster, making you feel better

teaspoons of fresh thyme (available at Walmart) in

a cup of boiling water for ten minutes.

Who would have thought that the

infamous“cuff”- that was used by all

young men so that their pants wouldn’t

drag on the ground - would make a

come back and be stylish today?

This fall, a cuff a day is a fashion plus.

How will this cuff work, you may ask?

Well, you only need a little cuff in my

opinion.

course, if the pants are a tad long.

Second reason (my favorite) is due

to showing off that sock. When cuff-

that pops and which complements the

I would just advise you to tell the tai-

cuff, and get him to hem your pants

a good half inch above your shoes to

show off that awesome sock. Also the

but also your shoe. It shows that you

Penn State: Show us more Jayson Moyer Co-Sports Editor [email protected]

The Penn State Nittany Lions have played four games under new head coach James Franklin. They have four wins. They have zero losses.

Two weeks ago, Penn State became bowl-eligi-ble. Penn State can win the Big Ten championship this year and can play in a postseason bowl game.

So judging by the undefeated start, one would think that the Franklin-era is off to a great start? Well, yes and no.

Yes, the Nittany Lions are 4-0 to start the year, but let’s look at this from a realistic standpoint, who have they played?

They started the season with a hard-fought win, traveling to Ireland to beat the University of &HQWUDO)ORULGDRQDJDPHZLQQLQJÀHOGJRDOas time expired. Okay, I’ll give that one to them. UCF’s program isn’t the worst and traveling across the Atlantic Ocean doesn’t seem easy, either.

Then they came home to Beaver Stadium and defeated Akron 21-3. Grant it, they had to come home from Ireland and get on a normal schedule with classes, practice, etc., but this is Akron we are talking about, people. Yeah, not a good program by any means. If it weren’t for two late touchdown passes to Jesse James, this game would have been much closer.

The Nittany Lions then traveled to New Jersey to take on Rutgers. The place was amped and rock-LQJ3HQQ6WDWHSLFNHGRIIÀYHSDVVHVLQWKLVJDPHKDGJUHDWÀHOGSRVLWLRQWRVWDUWGULYHVPDQ\WLPHVand failed to produce before scoring 13 straight points in the second half to win 13-10. This is Penn State’s best win this season, a hard-fought, grind-it-out road game in a tremendous atmosphere.

Week four was a total joke. Penn State hosted now 0-4 UMASS and won 48-7. D.J. Crook saw time at quarterback as Franklin pulled the start-ers, and Cole Chiappialle carried the ball 16 times in the second half. A total joke is an understate-ment.

So, if you all are wearing your realistic sun-glasses, I think you’d be right with me when I say that Penn State’s schedule so far has been not hard at all. Heck, the rest of the season isn’t all that hard of a schedule either, which could play into the Nit’s advantage.

Now, let’s look at the defense. It has been argu-ably the highest point of Penn State’s season so far.

The defense is sixth, yes, sixth, in the nation out of division-I FBS schools in points against. They are allowing a mere 11 points a game. But, ZKDW WHUULÀF RIIHQVHV KDV3HQQ6WDWH SOD\HG WKLVyear?

They have 12 sacks in four games. They have ÀYH LQWHUFHSWLRQV KRZHYHU WKH\ DOO FDPH LQ RQH

game against Rutgers. So I guess you could say the defense is a posi-

tive, but I need to see them play against a decent offense (ex: Ohio State or Michigan State – both at home).

The offense for Penn State has been hit-or-miss so far this season. The pass-game has been just ÀQH ² WKH\ GR KDYH DQ DOOZRUOG TXDUWHUEDFN LQChristian Hackenberg.

Penn State is No. 16 in the nation in passing yards per-game at 329.5. Hackenberg has accumu-lated for 1,261 yards this season and has thrown IRXUWRXFKGRZQVEXWÀYHLQWHUFHSWLRQV6RIDUWKLVseason his decision making has been suspect as he has tried to force some tough throws. But hands down, Hackenberg has been the spark-plug and the best player on the Nittany Lion’s offense this year.

And yes, now we have to talk about the run-ning-game. It has practically been non-existent. I’m not knocking Franklin, he’s a good coach, but his complete ignorance to go away from the run at points in some games is annoying, to me.

Penn State is No. 108 in the nation in rush-ing yards per-game at 113.8. Up until last week against a bad UMASS team, it was a completely missing part of their offense.

Bill Belton leads the team in carries with 41 and yards with 164 and is tied with Zack Zwinak for the team-lead in touchdowns with three. Akeel Lynch is Penn State’s second-leading rusher with 131 yards, but has only carried the ball 17 times and has been used in a limited role.

So, if Penn State wants to continue to win, they need to prove that they can run the ball ef-fectively like they did on Saturday against UMASS.

Arguably, perhaps, the most appealing part to Penn State’s team this year has been the play of one Sam Ficken. Yes, the kicker for Penn State – WKHNLFNHUZKRPLVVHGIRXUÀHOGJRDOVDQGDQH[WUDpoint in a game two years ago. What a remarkable run he has made.

)LFNHQKDVJRQHRQWRPDNHHLJKWRIQLQHÀHOGgoals this season. He has been clutch. I remember watching him the past two seasons and closing my H\HVDQG FOHQFKLQJP\ÀVWVZKHQKHZRXOGJR WRNLFNDÀHOGJRDO:HOO,GRWKDWQRPRUH7KHFRQ-ÀGHQFHWKDWHYHU\RQHVHHPVWRKDYHDERXWWKLVNLGis great, and he has made huge strides since two seasons ago.

So, what is this Penn State team? Are they for real? Are they a team that can win 8-10 games this season?

Two key games will show how good this team really is: October 25 against Ohio State, and No-vember 29 against Michigan State – both at home.

In my opinion, Michigan State would have a ÀHOGGD\ZLWKWKLV3HQQ6WDWHGHIHQVHULJKWQRZ

They certainly have momentum riding on their

side going into the Northwestern game on Satur-day at Beaver Stadium, but can they sustain it?

Penn State has shown that they can play well late in games. They have shown they can defend.

I am a believer in this team, but, in order for me to consider them “legit,” they are going to have to show me that they can continually play well in all facets of the game, for the rest of the season.

So my suggestion is that we all put on our re-alistic sunglasses, enjoy the hype as it surrounds this team now, and see how they play in the next month.

Week four college football roundupJayson MoyerCo-sports [email protected]

Week four of the college football season saw some key matchups, two upsets, and a bunch of predictable wins.

The key matchups began on Thursday as No. 5 Au-burn defeated No. 20 Kansas State 20-14 on the road. Nick Marshall threw for 231 yards and two touchdowns in the win. Marshall also rushed for 46 yards.

Perhaps the most anticipated game of the week was in Tallahassee, Fla., as No. 22 Clemson visited No. 1 Florida State Saturday night. Unranked, but undefeated Mississippi State traveled to Baton Rouge, La., to take on the No. 8 ranked LSU Ti-gers. Mississippi State shocked the college football world pulling off a 34-29 win on the road. Dak Prescott threw for two touchdowns and rushed for 105 yards and another score for Mississippi State.

Also unranked Indiana stunned No. 18 Missouri on the road on a three-yard touchdown run by D’Angelo Rob-erts with 22 seconds left. The Hoosiers went onto win 31-27.

In other games, No. 2 Oregon remained unbeaten as

The Lock Haven Bald Ea-gles (0-3, 0-2 PSAC) lined up against nationally ranked In-diana (Pa.) University Crim-son Hawks (2-1, 1-1 PSAC) looking for a win against WKHP IRU WKHÀUVW WLPH VLQFH1981 and despite several late opportunities, lost 21-16.

IUP started the second half scoring when they drove 74 yards on seven plays to go up 21-3. Quarterback, Caleb Walton (Manheim, Pa./Man-heim Central) led the Ha-ven offense on a 14-play, 69-yard touchdown drive when he connected with Bernard Smack (State College, Pa./Shippensburg Univ.) on a 12-yard fade to the back cor-ner of the endzone.
