Quick Job Tip: Develop your “elevator speech”
Think of the “elevator speech” as a 30-second commercial about you. ● Use the elevator speech when talking to potential employers at job fairs or in other networking situations. ● Include your name, major, year and a snippet about your professional or educational background. ● Finish by asking about a specific job opportunity you’ve researched or for more information about the company. ● With a polished elevator speech, you can’t lose!
Department of the Month:
Geography
Each month, we sit down with a representative from one
of the liberal arts academic departments to learn about
what makes liberal arts majors great job candidates.
A Note from Your Career Advisor: Further your career exploration with
informational interviewing!
Informational interviewing is a
conversation with someone working in
your desired field. Use the informational
interview often to get an on-the-ground
look at your future professional life.
Follow these steps to get the most out of
your informational interview:
Evaluate. Explore your skills, inter-
est, values, etc. Find out what ca-
reers you might enjoy.
Research. Look into the career or
company you are interviewing with.
What’s the company’s mission?
What do they value?
Find your interviewee. From your
research, draft a list of
employers of interest.
Make contact. Reach out to the
employer you want to interview by
email. Be concise and polite when
asking to interview them.
Draft your questions. They might
pertain to job duties, educational
requirements, personal experienc-
es, etc.
Interview! Show up on-time and
dressed professionally, listen care-
fully and ask tons of questions.
Follow up. Always send a thank
you email or note.

This month, we caught up
with Geography
Internship Coordinator
and Senior Lecturer Mark
Carter to ask a few ques-
tions about the career
perks of an geography
degree. What is the most valuable
piece of advice you’d give a
student or recent graduate
just beginning their job
search?
Networking. You should figure out what you want to do, then find someone in that field or with that compa-ny. After you’ve found someone, do informational interview with them. With the connection from the informational interview you could have a foot in the door with that company or in that field.
How can a job seeker “sell” his/her liberal arts degree to em-ployers?
Create a professional
portfolio: collect all your best work and be able to show an employer what you can do. For example, Geographic Information System students should show a map that they have done, a report writing sam-ple and an example of their quantitative analysis.
What are some popular career choices for Geography majors? Geographic Information System (GIS), which includes remote sensing, visualization, cartography, spatial modeling and quanti-
tative methods; environ-
mental management careers; resource management careers; and urban and regional planning. What advice would you give to new geography majors on building their resumes while still in school? Start by joining student organizations. Get involved with Career Service by attending job fairs, which is a good way to network with
employers. Then do some job shadowing in the field of your interest during the summer or the winter break. And be sure to get an internship. What are some skills geography majors
utilize as successful profes-sionals? Research and report writing skills, quantitative static skills and mapping skills, just to name a few.
