Library Consortia
A Consortium could be described as a group of organizations who come together to fulfill a combined objective that usefully requires co-operation and the sharing of resources. And need to have a clear mutual goal in order to ensure their success.
The aim should be to deliver “more than the sum of the individual parts”. A library Consortium formation can be local, regional, state, national and inter institutional level.

Disadvantages of Consortia

UGC InfoNet Digital Library Consortium
The UGC-Infonet Digital Library Consortium was formally launched in December, 2003 by Honorable Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam, the President of India soon after providing the Internet connectivity to the universities in the year 2003 under the UGC-Infonet programme.
The Consortium proved to be a recipe to university libraries which have been discontinuing subscription of scholarly journals because of "Serials Crisis". The term "serials crisis" refers to exponential and continuing increase in subscription cost of scholarly journals.
About UGC Infonet
The Consortium provides current as well as archival access to more than 7000+ core and peer-reviewed journals and 10 bibliographic databases from 26 publishers and aggregators in different disciplines. The programme has been implemented in phased manner.
In the first phase that began in 2004, access to e-resources was provided to 50 universities who had Internet connectivity under the UGC-Infonet Connectivity programme of the UGC.
In the second phase, 50 more universities were added to the programme in the year 2005. So far 160 Universities out of 181 that come under the purview of UGC, have been provided differential access to subscribed e-resources.
The benefit of subscription to e-resources would also be extended to the colleges, to begin with the College for Potential with Excellence (CPE) and autonomous colleges

INDEST
The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has set-up the "Indian National Digital Library in Engineering Sciences and Technology (INDEST) Consortium"
The Ministry provides funds required for subscription to electronic resources for (48) institutions including IISc, IITs, NITs, IIMs and a few other centrally-funded Government institutions through the consortium headquarters set-up at the IIT Delhi.
The Consortium has an active mailing list and a Web site hosted at the IIT Delhi.

N-List
The Project entitled "National Library and Information Services Infrastructure for Scholarly Content (N-LIST)", being jointly executed by the UGC-INFONET Digital Library Consortium, INFLIBNET Centre and the INDEST-AICTE Consortium, IIT Delhi provides for i) cross-subscription to e-resources subscribed by the two Consortia, i.e. subscription to INDEST-AICTE resources for universities and UGCINFONET resources for technical institutions; and ii) access to selected e-resources to colleges. The N-LIST project provides access to e-resources to students, researchers and faculty from colleges and other beneficiary institutions through server(s) installed at the INFLIBNET Centre.
Current Status
As on Aug 6 2011, a total number of 1960 colleges have registered themselves with the N-LIST programme including 1398 Govt. / Govt.-aided colleges covered under the 12 B Act of the UGC.
Log-in ID and password for accessing e-resources has been sent to the authorized users from these 1398 colleges.
Members
Universities: Universities covered under the Phase I of the UGC-INFONET Digital Library consortium will have access to Web of Science subscribed by the INDEST-AICTE Consortium for the technical institutions (IITS IISC).
Technical Institutions (IITs, IISc, IISERs and NITs): IITs, IISc, IISERs and selected NITs, i.e. core members of the INDEST-AICTE Consortium, would get access to selected e-resourcesINDEST-AICTE Consortium would get access to selected e-resources namely Annual Reviews, Project Muse and Nature (1 title) subscribed by the UGC-INFONET Digital Library consortium.
Colleges: 6,000 12 B colleges that are funded by the UGC will have access to electronic resources subscribed by the UGC-INFONET Digital Library consortium or its member universities as well as few selected e-resources that were found most appropriate for colleges including e-journals and e-books. These resources include more than 2100 e-journals and 51,000 e-books.

Theses and dissertations are known to be the rich and unique source of information, often the only source for research work that does not find its way into various publication channels. Doctoral dissertations are manifestation of result of four to five years of intense work involving huge investment of resources, both mental and physical and infrastructure and other support from the universities. A thesis reflects quality of research work conducted by a student and the ability of an institution to lead and support original work of research in a given discipline.
