They didn't stay in Mississippi long and shortly moved to Louisiana where they planted their family roots. Growing up in Louisiana, Roosevelt went head to head with new challenges such as the civil rights movement from 1954 to 1968. Roosevelt stated, "I remember being the object of hate, and the only black senior at Glen Oaks High School. I was apart of the Integrated soft opening that allowed one black person at a time to go into the classroom. I wanted to learn, not all the foolishness." A common incident was when the teachers asked a question, "I would raise my hand to answer a question and they would just ignore me." Despite all the obstacles he had to endure, he went on to serve in the Army for 8 years and was promoted to Captian. He said, "I loved to travel and they sent me to Hawaii, Germany, and Vietnam. Being in the Military Intelligence made you think." He went on to Southern University in Baton Rouge Louisiana and graduated with a BA in Political Science and Liberal Arts. People would tell me, "That has never been done before, so that was my challenge to do it!" One, of many accomplishments in his life, was when he became the Precinct Chairman of The Colony, Founder of The Colony Democratic Party, Band Announcer for Southern University College Band, and Ordained Minister. He stated, "The crowning achievement in my life is my daughter, Cherrone. She and her grandkids are the pride of my life." I asked Roosevelt, "What are some words of wisdom you would like to share with the youth?" He said, "Listen to your elders. I don't understand the hate, what's the purpose, why? If you practice what you preach you won't hate anymore. Make an impact in your life." Thank you, Roosevelt and it was a pleasure to write about your amazing life!
