GHSATING A NSWPAPER TO SERVE OPPRESSED Wfim; PEOPLE

I t i s important that people understand how White Lightning came to publ i s h i t s own newspaper. There are no newspaper experts or technicians who = belong to White Lightning, Most of us who contributed a r t i c l e s for our f i r s t -issue don't have a high school education, and our a.rticles represent the f i r s t time we have ever gotten anything in print.

Although some 3rd World brothers assisted UG In obtaining necessary materials and some basic s k i l l s , the newspaper was fundamentally a result of a l l of us pooling our labor and know ledge together. We learned that what i s important i s not so much the s k i l l s or the finished product but the process of learning and struggling together.

Individually, we have a l l been made, t o f e e l by Amerikan s o c i e t y ( i n sctibols. Churches, factories, correctional i n s t i t u t i o n s ) stupid, uncultured,

LIGHTNING STRIKES know that our personal experiences, i t i s obvious to us that making when p i e c G d together and connected, pledges and promises about fighting for] give a much more honest picture of the oppressed peoplefe Interests and actu-r e a l i t i e s of Amerikan society t h a n most a l l y doing i t are two different of t h e rubbish and apologies for oppres-things. Many so called white revolu-s i o n t u r n e d out by professional writers, tionary groups are always shooting off

We also know that our experiences at the mouth about poor and working are not Isolated and different from the c l a s s white people, but i n practice majority of poor and working c l a s s white people,. Unlike many white " l e f t i s t s " , " r adicals", and "movement people" who come from privileged s o c i a l positions and who fancy themselves as our saviours, the members of White Lightning know by painful experience what i t means to suffer. We connect our experiences and interests with those of a l l suffering people. We are not out to save some abstraction pointed to as 'oppressed white people*,, because we are oppressed white people. We r«cognize that i t i s in our. s e l f -i n t e r e s t to build a revolutionary movement among oppressed white people so that we can unite on an equal basis with our 3rd World comrades. We recognize this f i r s t and foremost beeause we fgel and understand the nature of our own oppression.

Our aim i s to develop a news-and not possessing a n y idoas worth writ- paper that genuinely expresses the ing about. People f r o m our c l a s s background are not supposed t o w r i t e anything" more thtin o u r Kignaiur^s on a los.n a p p l i c a t i o n * Koru conditioned to py.l..leve that ^.ritin,:: i n e x c l u s i v e l j resGr/o ' 1 for the profess lona-l'^'• • know now tha t t h i s ir^ b u l X o h i t , We

interests of oppressed white people--par t i c u l a r l y white victims of the heroin plague. We want i t to be our tool and weapon in struggle against tiiat c l a s s of wealthy bosses and t h e i r i n d u s t r i a l and military empire that i s the pause of 0".r suffering,

they continuously i n s u l t and sabotage our efforts (along with the efforts of 3rd World people) at organizing ourselves. They treat us as though we are i d i o t i c sheep that have to be led by thei r middle c l a s s values.

To maintain our base among white oppressed people as well as to grow larger and more effective,we need the active participation of a l l poor and working c l a s s white people. Oppressed people and t h e i r experiences are our teachers. The only power that can fundamentally change t h i s society l i e s i n our c o l l e c t i v e haiKls,

We are especially appealing for c r i t i c i s m so that we can correct wrong ideas and learn from our mistakes.

SPILLING THE BEANS Logos i s a therapeutic eomnunity

for dru^ addicts vhich serves the South Sronx, I t was s t a r t e d by ex-add ICtS from Synanori awi Daytop and i s l i k e those programs, I came t o Logos i n July 1970 as a peychievtrist who knew nothing; about drugs. Everyone at Logos was wrapped up in dreams about h i s own mysterious hang-ups. There were no newspapers. Pr a c t i c a l problems never seemed to come,up. The phony smiles of the residents are not l i k e anything i n New York City, l e t alone the Son+h Bronx, I n so many ways Logos looked a f t e r my "interests!** i t forgot r a c i a l and c l a s s issues; i t spoke my psycholoE^ical language 1 i t blamed i n i i v i d u a l s rather than society? and i t even served me lunch I n the director's o f f i c e .

The job system i s the most important part of Logos. Addicts entering thn procrram b©gin work i n the kitchen or on the service crew. As long as a person f i t s into the system, he or she i s promoted to job using business s k i l l s or an administrative position, AH work i s based on the American mili t a r y model. No work i s done with cooperation. The sergeants (called "expediters" i n Logos) are trained to be mean and expect to be hated by those under them. Discipline, not help, i s the t h i n g . People succeed who can function w e l l in a brutal setting. Women are channeled Into typing, f i l i n g and ironing jobs, Spanish-speaking people remain in manual labor. Once I heard, "He r e a l l y knows English but his mental l l l n e s f s makes him pretend t h a t he doesn't,"

The encounter group came from Syn-anon. Every resident has a group three times a week. I n con-trasst, s t a f f raem-bers, also ex-addiets, almost never participate i n encounters—even as l e a * ders,,Older zresidents te^ch newcomers the method. Residents are not supposed to "react on the floor," Rea^^ting means showlnio; a strong negative emotion or attitude. The "floor** i s anywhere but inside an encounter group. Anger i s limited to encounters. Since the s t a f f — a n d the outside wor'ld"-are not m the groups, an^er pan never be directed toward them. The encounters teach residents to channel angry f e e l ings toward themselves and t h e i r friends. Understanding of s o c i a l causes of addiction i s suppressed by the encounter method.

Heads are shaved for "reacting" outside a group, A person i s insulted and given worse jobs to make him keep more arvi moire ,^ui3t inside. The s t a f f s a y s , "you have t o learn t o accept i n j u s t i c e s , " This attitude also suppresses e r i t i c i s m of the s t a f f and prepaipes -the ex-addict t o be a d o c i l e ( e x p l o i t e n ) person. They teach e5c-addicts -Lo work 12^Ib hours a day at meaningless jobs and never complain. They t r a i n people to be l i k e whipped dogs,

went through changes at Logos, I always f e l t close to the residents and sometimes f e l t close to the s t a f f . From the a t a r t I h^rld back my o r i t i - , c i sms, feeling t h a t "ex-addicts can handle t h e i r own problems best" and t h a t a "partly good program i s better than none," T took a strong < tand on

some things t ^ d ) I refused to deal with gay residents as though being gay was a sickness J (^) T gave seminars attacking the use of psychiatric d i ^ -noses (character disorders) to explain away the epidemic of heroin. I n two weekly groups we discussed the strengths of col l e c t i v e leadership (doing things together) and the bad effects of the Logos system on the sergeants and the privates. Many of the older residents hated promotions which forced them to treat t h e i r friends i n a hostile way.

Nevertheless I went along with the Logos program i n many way«, I did not confront the destructiveness of Logos f u l l y . This weakness was caused by my prejudice toward addicts, I saw unreal s i m i l a r i t i e s between ex«^dicts. One ex-addict's leadership had the same value to me as any other ex-addlcts' leadership. I did not understand c l a s s differences between addicts. As time went on, the residents taught me about the r e a l i t y of drug addiction. According to the crazy medical system I was supposed to "cure" them, but actually they "cured" me,

jgos i s ;]ust ITke the oppressive outside world. The encounter group system suppresses feelings ju s t as surely as heroin does. Those on top ^rab for fancy clothes and cars. The only way to get ahead i s to be more age-ressive than the other guy. Women are oppressed by job discrimination and by special encounter groups which discoss t h ^ i r sexual performance.

Businessmen's v a l u e s are pushed on the residents. I n a group of older r e s i dents, most thought they would be able t o s t a r t a s m a l l business when they l e f t Logos,

People who leave Logos "without our good graces" become taboo. No one i n the house can mention t h e i r names. Society's myth that once an addict always an addict i s used to put down residents' c r i t i c i s m of s t a f f and to b l a c k l i s t people who leave ahead of schedule. I n two years no one was given permission to leave.

The people i n Logos, for the most part, love each other warmly. Logos— the organijsation, the director's plan, and the Synanon t r a d i t i o n — i s an enemy of the people.

Small scale protest occured in Logos before December 1970, A women's movement made tiny gains before the i r meetings were banned. Black groups and Puerto Rican groups were resented by the s t a f f and never allowed to confront the obvious racism i n the house. The high drug use of lower l e v e l s t a f f personnel was explained away as individual f a i l u r e s .

The r i s k s of leaving or being expelled are g r e a t . Many residents are paroled to Logos and could return to prison i f a bad report i s sent In, Most residents have no non-addict f r i e n d s or r e l a t i v e s who could help thetfti They a l l havA l i t t l e hope of getting a straight job. Logos' policy of b l a c k l i s t i n g " s p l i t e e s " from the welfare r o l l s and Jobs i n the drug f i e l d drives the f i n a l n a i l into the c o f f i n . Because of Logos' repression, the myth of always an addict becomes a r e a l i t y .

When Logos bought a 5?6sert hotel i n the C a t s k i l l s , the struggle between the director and the residents reached a c r i s i s . The golf courses and other useless luxuries represent a l l that i s wrong with Logos. The resort needs a va s t amount of repairs before i t can be used. Only the cheap labor of ex-addicts from the South Bronx could make the h a l f m i l l i o n d o l l a r investment pay off. As winter started, residents who never received education or job training were being shipped to Liberty, New York to build a Logos empire. I t was ugly.

The common oppression in Logos andl the great warmth built by l i v i n g together helped the residents fight more and more c o l l e c t i v e l y . Together they could protect themselves, A few older residents resigned from Logos us a public p o l i t i c a l a ct, Dosens more followed. The S p i r i t of Logos was established.

The S p i r i t of Logos has grown steadily i n the l a s t twelve months. Many people, e s p e c i a l l women, who had been attacked as "blank personal i t i e s " i n Logos have already become leaders i n the revolutionary group.

As the African psychiatrist Frantz Fanon wrote, the struggle against p o l i t i c a l oppression i s the path to mental health.

111 1 67 I caught hepa t i t i s . At the sailfe time 1 also had a hahlt or) heroin, but due to the hepatitis I couldn't stand the sight of a bag of dope much les s shoot I t , Sverytime T stuck the needle in my arm I would vomit u n t i l my stomach hurt so bad that I f e l t as though I had been stabbed, I told a doctor what I was going through and he gave me a proscription for 100 dolophine p i l l s (methadone in p i l l form), I kicked the heroin habit and no longer had a craving for i t , because now I had a methadone habit instead. At the end of a s i x month period I was taking 18 dolophines a day(10 milligrams per p i l l ) , (To give the reader an idea of the addictive powers of methadone, I w i l l use the following i l l u s t r a t i e n . An addict who i s going through the peak of withdrawal from heroin w i l l be given 60 milligrams a day or leas in order to block the pains of withdrawal, 180 milligrams of methadone a day could be compared to shooting 50, 75 or more bags of heroin depending on weight and quality,)

After about days I got balled out and went right back to heroin again—mainly because I was s t i l l s i c k from withdrawing from methadone. After about a year I got busted again a«l kicked the heroin hi-bit i n j a i l . While in j a i l I decided to t r y to do something about my addiction to drugs, I went to a therapeutic community called Phoenix House and was a f f i l i ated with them for about I 6 months.

Wften in time the s t a f f at Phoenix House discovered that I was a good driver and had other mechanic a l s k i l l s , they related to me more as a tool than a human being, I was working so much that 1 didn't attend any encounter groups (therapy) for over 7 months, I l o s t f a i t h i n the empire building plans of Phoenix House and myself, and I began shooting dope in the program, I was copping ^ bundles (15 bags) and bringing them back into the program, Eventually found out I wasn't the only one getting high there, I shared my dope with people when I found out. Some people s p l i t from the program;

mas I caught her and a male resident i n a s t a f f office about 2 o'clock in the morning. She was performing f e l l a t i o on him (this was true). So the s t a f f wanted me to be punif?hed for holding on to g u i l t and not t e l l i n g anybody e a r l i e r .

I l e f t and of the 80 people who we3^ there while I was only I 5 stayed,

30 days a f t e r I s p l i t , I got busted again for a robbery. 1 didn't want to go through the, horrors of j a i l again so I asked to be put i n the NACC (Rockefeller drug prog?:am). At the time the NACC was being phased out, because t h e i r funis had been sharply out. So the judge sentenced me to 5 years probation on the grounds that I stay on a raetheuione maintenance program.

I t was my only choice. After I got strung out on methadone for about 7 months, I got busted again and had to kick the methadone habit i n j a i l , I was detoxified i n 21 days, which wasn't long enough, T w/»s s t i l l s i c k for about 60 days a f t e r they cut my methadone completely. I wasn't able to sleep properly for much longer.

Once I began using heroin I had no re a l choice where I could go. I could (1) be a work slave i n a therapeutic community for years, (2) be forced to " o to j a i l under the p o l i ceman's gun, or (3) have my every movement for the r e s t of my l i f e controlle d by a weapon more powerful than a gun—methadone maintenance,

I now re a l i z e that i t i s because I have been a worker and am from a working c l a s s family that my choices were always limited and controlled by th i s society.

White Lightning has now offered me control of myself and another choice—the power of the people!

I was s e l l i n g dolophines and , tradin^r them for goof b a l l s (barbiturates) or speed, Then one day I got busted and went to j a i l , I was sent to Rikerr^ Island hospital to k i c i The doctors wouldn't give me any methadone to kick with, because I was not enrolled in an o f f i c i a l c i t y program. According to the rules I couldn't prove I had n. method one habit. I was so sick and my body hurt so bp-dly that I thous^ht I was going to die. The doctors a l l thought I was jo-aming on them jus t to get high.

Others stayed. After about 5 more months, more than half the people i n the program were getting high, Everybody kept t h i s fact secret.

One day one of the g i r l s who had s p l i t came beck 6 months l a t e r and reported that I was pushing dope in the therapeutic community. The s t a f f refused to believe her. The s t a f f was reluctant to believe her because I was dolrig private work for them in th e i r personal home and they didn't went to blow the frpe labor.. But the s t a f f wanted to know why she was lying about me. T told them that l a s t Christ^

Poor and oppressed white people, like all oppressed peoples haw been blaming others for their poverty. The others usually have been other Pippiessed white people or peopltf 6f color-black «Bd brown, who are just as oppressed or more, instead of |l»l«iiting the real enemy-tbe Wealthy.

By oppressed peoples flatting and blaming each other for their poverty, they never have the time or energy to fight the Real Enemy-the Fbwer of the Blch. But, to thin* one group is better is only i n our minds, put there by the rich. In reality, if yott sate poor and oppressed, then that's what we are, and as long as the conditions exist for our poverty, we can fight other oppressed p ^ p l e s ftom now to eternity, and well still remain poor and op{Hressed.

The rich lying politicians say they are helping poor and opprespd people with their "war on po¥«rty" programs. Bu t . t iWfT^ U ^ M l n ) ^ which serves the basic needs and desires of oppressed white people, says—enough of your "war on poverty" program We know its another lie to keep us poor, so we are declaring a "war on the rich" p r o ^ m and because we recognize the true enemy. We recognize that oppressed white people have been fooled long enough. We say that we have had enough poverty, and that we ar« about setting things straight. We see a lot of feUow poor and oppressed white people, hung up within their own culture, race or religion and the has beffl used to disorganize, confuse and separate our peopfe. We say it is time, to get together, to drop all old ideas that keep us apart; if not, we will remain

In the jcam« state of «oB&ist9n ond poverty. and we will not tolerate ttiis any longer. We. must expose to the People, all those elements

which are kecpmg us aeiiaated, we must draw that clear line of demarcation between thoee that conAise the People and those that ai^ trying to serve the People's needs, not by words, but by active programs.

The ultimate cnoice is always up to the People..

But, we say that the People want out of this poverty and oppression. We demand decent housing, food, clothing and medicine {ie««. The People h a ^ n» time for those elementis which only confuse us more and hold us back from getthig out of this op|»es8ion. Any elem«it or group that tries to destroy or stop programs that are meecmg the needs and desires of our People, must be designated an Enemy of the People. Any person or group that keeps our peo[de separated, confused and Hghting each other, must also be designated an Enemy of the People; because only our Enemies would be opposed to programs that feed, clothe and keep our Peo^e in good health. LOGOS: A CO?JCEKTRATIC'N CAMP On one hundred-e ighty- f i f th street and

Washington avenwe i n the Bronx, there is a therapeutic c ommun i t y known as Logos 2, This i ns t i tu t i on is one o f three such camps; Logos 1, 2 and 3. Logos I is located on 137 street between Cypress and Brook avenues. Logos 3 is located i n L iber ty , Nev.' Yo rk , upstate. Logos 2, however, is where the condit ions are most severe and the oppression is most clearly seen. This is where the white racist p i g . director Marvin Weinstein rules. Weinstein is the over-all d i rector o f all these centers.

The concentrat ion carqp aspect does not come in w i t h the fact that they are poor ly fed or badly clothed because they are wel l fed and c lothed. However, I can't help but reiTieiriber the blank unemot iona l expressions on the faces o f the Brothers and Sisters inside this nherapeutic c o m m u n i t y ' designed t o 'rehabi l i tate ' drug addicts. Instead, what they are is a systematically planned out , 1984 type o f nightmare in which the inmates have been stripped o f their identit ies as Black and P u e r t o R i c a n peop l e , and o f their personalities.

I had the oppo r tun i t y t o in f i l t rate this ' T C (therapeutic c o m m u n i t y ) and to speak t o sorr.e o f the Brothers and Sisters. They al l seemed l ike very we l l trained and wel l mannered zoo animals. Pig Weinstein is using t e c h n i q u e s d e v e l o p e d b y t h e Nazi psychiatrist, i n their concentrat ion can p experiments dur ing Wor ld Vv'ar I I . He has hooked these up w i t h experimental data p r o d u c e d by U.S. A r m y doctors on personality cont ro l and development. The purpose o f these experiments is to develop away t o destroy a person's ident i t y and their pride i n being Black or Puerto Ricans.

A few o f the techniques that they are using i n Logos are: 1) i f a person speaks ou t against something, he or she w i l l have their head shaved to show them that they have no right t o express themselves. 2) I f a person has a strong personality and is very aware o f their i d en t i t y , they w i l l a t tempt t6 break them doum and in t imidate then\ by apply ing pressure, eventually forc ing them in to a nervous breakdown after wh i ch they become passive and submit to this dominat i on .

This program was started by A lber t Einstein Medical College. I f anyone has been reading the dai ly rag sheets, they wou ld know that this is the same group o f pigs that awarded HEV/ pig FJehardson for his genocidal attacks on welfare mothers and

chi ldren w i t h the Brownie and work for your checks systems.

These same brainwashing techniques are now being used i n publ ic schools on Black and Puerto Pvican chJldren.

These B r o t h e r s and Sisters, these cx-addicts already vict ims o f a racist genocidal system are no more than guinea pigs being used t o test out these techniques which the pigs w i l l use on al l o f us eventually. We, the members o f the Uni ted Revolut ionary Front against Drugs, ask that i f y o u know an addict v h o wou ld l ike t o k ick his habit w i t h o u t tak ing the risk o f having pigs experiment on h i m , wou ld y o u please refer h im or her t o a peoples ant i -drug program like the one being conducted at L inco ln Hospital in the Bronx. The telephone number t o call is 9605460 .

When y o u rob a person o f the ab ihty to make his or her own decisions and when you rcb them o f their i den t i t y , that person might as wel l be dead. This madness that pig Weinstein and his staf f o f Black and Puerto Rican lackeys are endorsing is mental murder : G E N G C I E J E !

being allowed to graduate with the c l a s s . My diploma was m a i l -

People who 1 haven^t seen i n awhile always ask me how did I get i n t o t h i a shitjl The answer to me. T h i s was supposed to to that i s 1 got i n t o " t h i s s h i t " Duniahment and i t T^robalv became p o l i t i c a l not by rea d in g but by things 1 had went through i n my l i f e , i am going to run some of them down but they won*t be i n any order because my idea s are running everywhere. Some of the b a s i c things were that X was l i v i n g i n a poor t h i r d world communi t y and being sent to c a t h o l i c school by my moms. I n c a t h o l i c school 1 came to

see how the deck was stacked a g a i n s t me i n the way 1 would get bad marks f o r penmanship. 'Uhe reason being that when X went home x. didn« t have a taole to w r i t e on but did i t on my bouncy bed. x t was being t o l d that reading comics was oad f o r ygur reading grade. 1 wasn't " c u l t u r e d " so that was a l l 1 read and yet x had one of the best reading grades.

be punishment and i t probaly would have been'for a middle c l a s s dude f o r who i t was set up f o r . But to me with my poor South jbronx background i t was b e a u t i f u l , l o t only did l not have to wear a funny looking cap and gown a l s o 1 didn't have to pay the money to re n t i t .

Another important p a r t of my education has been my working i n a grocery store ever since 1 was ten years o l d . When X was fourteen 1 was wording a f t e r school and g e t t i n g paid 1 . 2 5 when the minimum was 1.60 Xn the summer X began to work f u l l time 6days a week 9 hours a day. Mj jjob function^was that was stocK, c a s h i e r , d e l i e v e r y boy, and was expected to oe a l s o guard. The two owners of the store a l s o owned the whole b u i l ding. So 1 them not only fucking over me but over the tenants. Right from the g i t X knew what was good l o r these two raother-e r s was bad forme. When X was up f r o n t packing 1 was supposed to check f o r s t e a l i n g out was to busy checking out the g i r l s outside the s t o r e . Another t h i n g

My Diggest l e s s o n on c l a s s CAme I n tne btn grade wiiere i went into school with dreams of good grades and impressing people. tiu% i n l e s s than two months I was h i t i n the face with some r e a l i t y , rhe r e a l i t y came as nuns i n t e n t on creaking my s p i r i t . Check t h i s s h i t out"bad marks a l l 90's h a i ) I . S o wh$n X c o r r ected her and she saw X wasn't going to be passive,shd runs t h i s game, "Well you've been absent alot"and followed that with"anyway don*t answer me Dack". X s t i l l wasn't complet-l y hip to what was going down

SeHTEOUS which was a up f o r me was when ever the store was ripped o f f . X a l s o ±ipped o f f whenever X -could s i n c e i t was r i g h t f u l l y mine, x a l s o learned what a l i o e r a l and conservative was. Smitty was the c o n s e r v a t i v e ' i n that he l e t you knew that he was the boss and you a shitworker. he a l s o l e t you imew that he didn't give-a damn about you. Sol was the l i b e r a l i n that he would t a l k to you about problem l i k e he was one of the boys. But you see he was the proolem because t h i s motherfucker was under paying me and he wasn't about to d e a l with t h a t . So I learned to watch out f o r the r i c h l i o e r a l s .

At the time X was working i u n t i l she kicked me out of c l a s s was a l s o going through heavy fo r s m i l i n g . 1 couldn't get back changes i n high school. Xn high i n u n t i l 1 brought a note oi apology from my moms, imagine how the note would have read.

Many people have asked what the fist symbolizes. It is a symbol of struggle. A symbol of stFug ^ e by the people for the people. The fist stands for all uie people sticking together - td^ether tight like a fist, it means all power to the people. All power to the people. Black power to the blac)^ people, brown power to brown peo{de, red power to red people, ydlow power to yellow i)eople, and white power to wnite people. There can't be one of these with-out aU the rest. White people are not free if black people are not free and black people on not free if white people are not free. Men are not free if women are not free. So it's All Power to All the People!!
