Welcome to LIGNA 2013!

Forestry industry

At LIGNA 2013 you can discover all the latest trends and technologies for sustainable forestry management, culti-vation and harvesting.

The forestry industry and its technologies form the first link in the value-adding chain for wood. So at LIGNA you can learn all about primary processing in the sawmilling and panel products industry, secondary processing in the skilled trades and manufacturing industry – and also about all the different uses of wood as a fuel source.

In addition, you’ll find all the latest trends as well as new production standards. You can meet the international market leaders and senior decision-makers and establish valuable new business contacts for the future. In short, this is the timber industry’s No.1 event of the year – so a visit is a must!

Bioenergy from wood

The rising cost of fossil fuels such as natural gas and heat-ing oil are forcing us to look around for new sources of energy. In other words, there are very good reasons why wood is becoming increasingly important as a fuel source.

Germany’s environmental and emissions standards are among the strictest in the world. And yet in recent years Germany has emerged as the leading producer of effective environmental technologies.

LIGNA showcases furnace systems for biofuels such as wood that lead the world in terms of energy efficiency and low environmental impact. Many of the state-of-the-art technologies for extracting energy from wood that were unveiled for the first time at LIGNA have subsequently been exported successfully to other countries.

At LIGNA you can explore every aspect of bioenergy and its exploitation – from harvesting, logistics and preparatory treatment to final combustion. See how innovative concepts are now being developed, all aimed at securing energy supplies for the future.

ML Lower Saxony300 years of sustainability: a record that speaks for itself

2013 marks the 300th anniversary of the idea of sustaina-bility in German forestry. The concept was first mentioned by the Saxon mining engineer Hans Carl von Carlowitz in 1713, when in his work “Sylvicultura Oeconomica” he put forward the principle:

“Only fell as much timber as will grow again.”

This simple proposition has established itself as the guiding principle of German forestry management. More than that, it has evolved to become an ecological and economic ideal that is now accepted by the whole of society.

The principle is certainly well understood here in Lower Saxony. At present the quantity of timber grown exceeds the amount that is felled. The long-term aim must not only be to increase timber production, but also to ensure the survival of a sustainable, multifunctional regime of forestry management.

At LIGNA you can see a whole range of innovative tech-nologies and current research and development projects that focus clearly on sustainability. – Pavilion 32

The Lower Saxony Pavilion showcases innovative technologies, current research and development projects, and employment opportunities for forestry specialists. You can also find out about academic degrees in forestry (Master of Science and Bachelor of Science). Various probationary options and traineeships for aspiring forestry professionals will also be featured. Pavilion 32

KWF LIGNA Demonstration Area

One option is to utilize wood from other resources, such as agricultural land, so-called short-rotation plantations or cuttings and trimmings from conservation work or the clearing of tracks and paths.

One of the big challenges for the future will be to trans-form these disparate and heterogeneous raw materials into a homogeneous supply. How that might work in prac-tice will be the subject of demonstrations in and around Pavilion 34.

KWF LIGNA New Trends Pavilion

Here the trade show’s tagline “Making more out of wood” will be taken up and explored, showing that the key to the best possible utilization of wood for all types of use lies in an optimized control of the material flow, sorting and processing. – Pavilion 34

Focus on firewood

Making the most efficient use of wood as a fuel source at every stage of the production cycle – from harvesting, logistics and preparatory treatment to final combustion – is one of the key priorities addressed under the heading “Bioenergy from Wood”. While the traditional forestry industry and the utilization of wood as a raw material in the construction and furniture industries have long been a central theme of LIGNA over the years, the focus now broadens to include the many different ways in which wood can be utilized as a fuel source.

Whatever your area of interest – whether the preparation of firewood, the various furnace or boiler systems available for burning wood, or the growing of trees for firewood – LIGNA 2013 covers all the latest developments, solutions and innovative trends relating to these areas. The range of furnace and boiler systems on display includes wood- burning stoves that heat water, log boilers and automated boilers fuelled by wood chips or pellets, for which LIGNA also features container solutions.

Come and see the presentation “Data and materials flow chain – from harvested tree to factory floor”. As well as the training program “Qualifications – a must for quality”, the forestry invoicing project “Forst – InVoice” will be introduced. This enables business invoices to be produced very quickly on the basis of direct harvesting data. On the open-air site the economics of vehicle use will be exam-ined: do multi-purpose vehicles that can be adapted to a variety of tasks pay their way and give a better return on investment? Also up for discussion will be cordless power tools: are they a serious option for the forestry professional? Plus: LIGNA will be running demonstrations showing the practical side of training to become a skilled forestry pro-fessional. – Pavilion 33

NRW “Making more out of wood”

The state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) is home to a large and flourishing forestry and timber industry. The eco-nomic importance of the forestry sector is illustrated by the fact that the industry in NRW employs 180,000 full-time wor-kers and generates an annual turnover of 38 billion euros.

Recent studies have shown that the industry makes a major contribution to climate protection in North-Rhine Westphalia through the absorption of CO2 emissions by the forests and timber products, as well as through the substitution of fossil raw materials and fuels. Along with GIS-based timber harvesting and transport logistics, the presentation “Virtual Forest” and “Bioenergy from Wood”, this will be one of

the themes explored in the NRW Pavilion. – Pavilion 35

4th LIGNACup in the STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® SERIES

This year’s season in the STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® SERIES starts at LIGNA 2013, when Germany’s top lumberjack athletes go head to head on 9 May in the 4th LIGNACup competition.
