ICFRC Lecture Luncheon – Wednesday, April 2, 12:00-1:15pm

Nick Grossman, Adjunct Lecturer, UI Political Science “The Future of Drones and Unmanned Systems” In the last few decades, semi-autonomous killer machines have migrated from science fiction to a central role in real-world international relations. The United States utilizes unmanned aerial systems, commonly known as "drones," to strike targets both in and outside of military contexts. Though the US is at the forefront of unmanned technology, all advanced militaries use robots to perform a variety of tasks. From surveillance to ordinance disposal, drones are used in the air, water, and on land. With the US and other militaries' increasing reliance on unmanned systems, the FAA endorsing commercial drones in 2015, and Google developing a self-driving car, the prevalence of robots is increasing exponentially. As Grossman points out, technology often develops faster than humans' understanding of it. Nicholas Grossman is a lecturer in the political science department of the University of Iowa, where he teaches classes on terrorism and insurgency, national security policy, and 21st century technology and warfare. He received a PhD in International Relations from the University of Maryland with a dissertation titled "Robotics and the Future of Asymmetric Warfare." Before coming to Iowa, he presented on preemptive warfare at the Pentagon's Office of Net Assessment, and on terrorism to the Applied Physics Laboratory. As a technology enthusiast, Grossman finds developments in robotics to be both exciting and highly concerning. Register here, or contact the ICFRC office at (319) 335-0351 or [email protected]. Lectures are 12:00-1:15 pm @ Congregational Church, 30 North Clinton Street. Luncheons are $9.00 for ICFRC members, $12.00 for non-members. We encourage you to bring guests who would enjoy this topic. Honors students, please register through the UI Honors or the UI Honors facebook site: www.facebook.com/HonorsatIowa.

Fulbright Lunch and Learn Seminar Series Friday, April 11, 12:30-1:20 p.m. 1117 UCC (bring your lunch) Letters from Catalunya Phillip Round, Professor of English While teaching American ethnic literatures in Barcelona as a Fulbright scholar, Professor Round expected it to be the perfect place for discussions of American literature and culture. After all, Barcelona was the first place Columbus reported on his expedition to the King and Queen of Spain. What Round discovered, however, was that there are many Spains, and the Catalan nationalist outpouring that was reaching a fever pitch when he arrived created a unique opportunity to explore issues related to bilingualism and American Indian language revitalization--but led to some dangers as well. The title of his talk alludes to George Orwell's "Homage to Catalonia," and like Orwell's narrative of the Spanish Civil War, "Letters from Catalunya" will explore a few harrowing moments in his Fulbright year that underscore the surprisingly fiery/fervent nature of cross-cultural teaching.

What If...everyone voted? Tuesday, April 29, 7:00-8:30pm, Iowa City Public Library, Meeting Room A

Volunteer with Access 2 Independence

Access 2 Independence is a non-profit that has been working for over 30 years to increase the self-determination and integration of people with disabilities throughout the Eastern Iowa Corridor. Learn more at http://access2independence.org. Many volunteer positions are available; if you are interested in any of these positions, please email Emily at [email protected].

Peer Counselor: Peer counselors are individuals with disabilities who live independently, who are integrated into their community, and who have a desire to help others do the same. Peer mentors work with anyone who is adapting to a disability or seeking to increase their independence; peer counseling provides consumers with the opportunity to develop coping and advocacy skills, and provides empathy, friendship, and a morale boost.

After a training period, peer counseling can be performed both in and outside of the office, depending on the need of the consumer.

Peer Counselor Coordinator: We are looking for an energetic and dynamic volunteer to help coordinate and expand our Peer Counseling Program. This volunteer would be responsible for training peer counselors, screening applicants, making successful matches between individuals, and following up with matches to ensure long-‐term success. Experience with computers (Microsoft Office specifically) is a major plus. Will work predominantly at the office of Access 2 Independence, but some work from home can be arranged. A long-‐term commitment of at least 6 months at a time is required.

Marketing and Outreach: Since we are a small nonprofit organization, we are always looking for help with our marketing and outreach. Whether it is redesigning our brochure, passing out and posting fliers, or even creating a new logo for our organization, there is always something new and exciting for marketing volunteers to accomplish. These volunteer positions are largely on a by-project basis, so terms of service can vary from one day to many months at a time.

Social Media: Responsibilities include managing the Access 2 Independence Facebook and Twitter accounts, as well as occasional work with YouTube and other social media sites. If interested, this volunteer will also be in charge of photographing special events, group meetings, and other activities for our marketing and outreach team. After a brief supervised training period, this position can be completed from home, with regular in-‐office meetings with the Volunteer Coordinator.

Operations: Duties include filing consumer records, organizing the office, answering phones, and general office tasks. This position can also include helping consumers utilize the computer labs and other resources on an as needed basis, depending on the volunteer’s particular skills and their comfort level. Volunteer openings available range from one-day opportunities to longer-term options.

Fundraising: We are always in need of dedicated volunteers to help with the following tasks: plan and run fundraising campaigns; research, database management, and data entry; develop donor materials, presentations, and direct/indirect mailings. These volunteer opportunities will be mostly long term (at least 6 months), but shorter terms can be discussed on an as-needed basis.

Event Planning: This volunteer helps to plan and execute the annual ADA Celebration, as well as fundraising and outreach events. Volunteers get extensive hands-‐on experience with large-‐scale event planning, and because of this a longer-‐term commitment of at least 6 months at a time is usually required.
