Thugs have been terrorising us for a long time and each time they have committed crime, they come back to the community.” He said the alleged thieves had graduated to be big criminals who now carry dangerous weapons. “We are no longer safe in this community and if they are granted bail, they must just know that they will not be welcomed in this village. They have to go somewhere else as we cannot guarantee their safety here,” he said. The village’s traditional leader, Chief Neckson Shavhani, urged all to be united in the fight against crime. “All we want is a crime-free village where one can sleep outside with open gates, without fear of being attacked by thugs. We are now urging all residents to notify their neighbours if they are away from home. Very soon, we will be launch- ing a street watch, which will serve to secure our village,” he said. State of the Municipality

Address 2013

The budget approved by the

Makhado Municipality totals just

over R826 million for the new year,

but in 2015 this amount will pass

the R1 billion mark. These are some of the fi gures made

available by the mayor, Cllr David

Mutavhatsindi, during his State of

the Municipality Address two weeks

ago.The operational expenses for

2013/14 are expected to be just over

R722 million, whereas the predicted

income will be R692,5 million. This

leaves the municipality with a defi cit

of R29,5 million. In 2014/15, the

defi cit will hopefully be reduced to

R20,2 million, with a budgeted in-

come of R767,85 million against ex-

penses of R788,08 million. In 2015,

the municipality believes the income

will exceed the expenses, which will

result in a surplus of R20,75 million.

This will also the fi rst year that the

operational income, together with the

capital budget’s income, will exceed

R1 billion. The operational budget’s

income for that year is estimated at

R873,13 million against expenses of

R852,37 million.A big portion of the operating

expenses for the next year will be

salaries and wages. Mayor Mutavhatsindi mentioned

that the municipality budgeted for an

overall increase of 6,85%, as guided

by the National Treasury. “The total

salary bill amounts to R233,57 mil-

lion, which includes the budgeted

positions to be fi lled,” he said.

Unlike previous years where the

municipality had to implement

double-digit percentage increases

in electricity tariffs, the increase in

electricity this year is fairly moder-

ate. “Electricity revenue has been

estimated at an increase of 7% as per

Nersa guidelines,” the mayor said.

The proposed tariff increase for

other services such as refuse re-

moval, is 5,6%. The same percentage increase also

applies to sundry tariffs.

The bulk of the municipality’s

capital projects will be funded by

municipal infrastructure grants

(MIGs). This year, R86,7 million

will come from this external rev-

enue source. In 2014/15, this grant

is expected to increase to R107,17

million and in 2015/16 to R116,11

million.Income from operational activi-

ties is expected to bring in R32,38

million in the next year, which

will be used for capital projects. In

two years' time, the municipality

expects that R53,89 million from

operational income will be used for

capital projects.In this year’s budget, R15 million

will come from the integrated na-

tional electrical programme (INEP).

In two years' time, this grant is ex-

pected to increase to R25 million. A

further R319 765 will come from a

fi nancial management grant.

As far as the total budget is con-

cerned, almost R363 million of the

expenses will be funded by grants.

The biggest contributor will be the

equitable shares grant, which pro-

vides R256,24 million. The local

government fi nancial management

grant will contribute R1,55 million

this year, whereas the municipal

system improvement grant will

contribute R890 000.

Construction of the tarred road from Sereni to Mashamba Post Offi ce was budgeted for

R3,5 million.

Fed up with the rampant crime taking place in their area, the community of Shanzha in the Nzhelele area took to the streets on Wednesday,

The fi ght to decide who should be the real leader of the Kutama clan has now moved to the courts. In an affi davit fi led in the Limpopo High Court in Thohoyandou, the late Chief Peter Kutama’s only surviving son claims he should be the chief.

Khosi Fhumulani Peter Kutama ruled as chief from 1989 until his death in August 2011. He was the grandson of Chief Makhado Tshilwavhusiku Ramabulana. CLOSING DATE: 18th July 2013 AT 12 NOON.

(From page 1)The Kutama royal family held a

meeting on 26 December 2011 to decide who the next chief should be. Andries Kutama argues that not all members of the royal family were invited to this meeting. "I was sur-prised when the chairperson of the royal family, Lesley Ramabulana, announced that Vele Prince Kutama was identified as successor to the deceased," he says in his affidavit.

According to Andries Kutama, this decision is contrary to a Venda custom that prescribes that a man cannot succeed his own brother as traditional leader. "... the womb of a woman cannot bear two traditional leaders," he says.

The fact that it took so long for the son to claim the position he believes should be his, is also explained in the affidavit. According to Andries Kutama, they wrote a letter to the Limpopo Premier in September 2012, asking him to intervene. The matter was then referred to the MEC for Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs. In December 2012, they were informed that Vele Prince Kutama was recognised as the new chief. After consultations with some members of the royal family, it was decided to follow the legal route to overturn the decision. It was only in April this year that they managed to collect enough money to instruct an attorney to act on their behalf.

It seems as if the decision to ap-point Prince Vele Kutama as chief was based on the fact that the late Khosi Peter Kutama did not have a

dzekiso wife. A dzekiso wife is the one nominated by the royal family to bear a new chief. His only wife, Martha Kutama, apparently did not come from a royal lineage. "Should there have been a need (for a dzekiso wife), the royal family would have proceeded to look for a dzekiso wife even without the co-operation or consent of the ruling traditional leader," Andries Kutama argues. He reckons that during Khosi Peter Kutama's 20-year reign it was ac-cepted that Martha Kutama was the dzekiso wife.

"Our family knows who the right-ful heir is. I think the truth will soon prevail and he will take the rightful place. Mpho is old enough to take his place now,” Andries Kutama said in an interview two weeks ago.

The spokesperson for the Kutama royal family, Vho-Ntanganedzeni Kutama, did not want to expand on the issue and said such matters should not be discussed in the media or settled in court. He said the cor-rect channels had to be followed and it should be discussed during a gath-ering of the relevant members of the royal family. He said that no single individual person appointed the new chief, as it was the responsibility of the royal family. Ntanganedzeni Kutama explained that, according to Venda culture, the chieftaincy (Vhu-hosi) is the property of the family and the chief is the "manager" of that property. When the chief passes on, the property goes back to the family. "The appointment of the successor will thus be the responsibility of the royal family," he said.

KSCC´s prison director, Mr Lazarus Ncongwane, hands over a table to Pastor Isaac Dagada (Christ Worship House) while Vho-Mbulaheni Nkikana looks on.

Christ Worship House in Shayandima and sen-ior traditional leaders in South Africa received tokens of appreciation in the form of small, artis-tic tables for the continued work they are doing in helping the prisons rehabilitate offenders.

Last Tuesday, the church's pastor, Isaac Dagada, accepted 30 units of tables, which were made by the inmates at the Kutama-Sinthumule Correctional Centre. Dagada welcomed the gift and indicated that the products were only a sign of the hard work done by the correctional centres in South Africa. “We will keep the tables in our offices where everyone, including our visitors, will see them,” said Dagada.

“They are a sign of rehabilitation and the possi-bility of a crime-free South Africa. If an offender is released with skills from prison, I want to be believe that he or she won’t do crime again.”

According to the prison director, Mr Lazarus Ncongwane, prisoners make tables and other stuff as part of skills acquisition and learning. At the end of the day, the products are normally sold to the prison officials and the generated funds are donated

to needy charity projects in the area."We are acknowledging the

church's and traditional leaders' work in the outside community and the inside community as well," said Ncongwane. "As the prison facility

housing offenders who will one day go out to live in the outside world, we feel that we cannot ignore the active participation of the church and traditional leaders in the process of rehabilitation."

Ms Joyce Madima (right) hands the key to the new owner, Mr Phinias Singo, while his neighbour, Ms Sarah Ramathuba, looks on.

The community of Mashamba has shown that when all members of the community agree to stand united, they can achieve more in terms of commu-nity building.

This became apparent when the com-munity noticed one man's plight and decided to help him by donating building material to build a one-room house for him.

Although the house was completed a week ago, the community of-ficially handed the key of the house to its right-ful owner, Mr Phinias Fhedzisani Singo (53), about three weeks ago. “I thank my fellow vil-lagers who gave me the gift of a house,” said Singo. “There's nothing more painful than the frustration of not know-ing where to sleep each day when the sun sets.”

Singo had been wait-ing for an RDP house to become available while

he lived in an unsteady place arranged for him by the ward committee. His mud house had collapsed some five years ago. About six weeks ago, residents decided to contribute a single brick per household and a bag of cement to see that he at least had a roof over his head.

“This kind of achievement domon-strates our solidarity as a community;

it says that if we stick together, we can achieve more,” said local Sanco member Ms Rose Mudau. She said that Singo hoped that his children would come back to live with him, now that a house had been built for him. His house was built by the youths within the Mashamba commu-nity and the neighbouring villages, who volunteered to help.

Former policeman receives ten years for murder

Famanda Foster Namuhuchu.

An ex-police officer was sentenced to an effective 10 years' impris-onment on Tuesday for a murder which took place at his home on the evening of 18 April 2010.

The Louis Trichardt Regional Court convicted Famanda Foster Namuhuchu (34) on a charge of mur-der after he had shot a close relative, Mr Johannes Risimati Mabunda, at least nine times, first in the head and then in other areas of his body. Mabunda died in the attack.

It was heard in court during the trial that Mabunda had asked some money from Namuhuchu at a tavern. When Namuhuchu said he had no money, Mabunda then started insulting him and said that the accused was “fat like a frog, and that he would smash his testicles”.

Namuhuchu then left the tavern, but the deceased followed him into his home with a beer bottle. He then smashed the bottle and charged at the accused with a sharp piece of it.

Namuhuchu stated that he then shot Mabunda in self-defence.

The court rejected the claim of self-defence on the basis that the num-ber of shots fired from the accused's service pistol exceeded the idea or intention of self-defence. Then the

court found him guilty on 18 June.In mitigation, the accused's de-

fence, Adv Ralph Ndleve, stated that the accused was a first offender, was married with two children and was the sole breadwinner. “He also as-sisted in the burial of the deceased by contributing a head of cattle, R1 200 and a tent, an act which indicated his remorsefulness,” said Adv Ndleve. “I submit that the element of mercy be exercised in favour of the accused.”

He further indicated that the ac-cused's elderly father had since died as a result of trauma because his son had been accused of murder. State prosecutor Hilke van Rensburg submitted that the accused be “pun-ished for the death of the deceased,” because he had failed to act like a police officer after he was provoked. “Being sworn at or even assaulted by individuals is part of the daily work of police officers,” she said.

The state prosecutor then read an affidavit filed by the deceased's wife, where she explained that she was now left in the lurch after the brutal death of her husband. “I am physically disabled. My husband, who died like an animal and was left in a pool of blood, accepted and loved me with my disability,” reads the affidavit.

It further reads that she is currently struggling to find another partner, "as most men are prejudiced against disabled women".

In conclusion, the court imposed a direct jail term of 10 years on Namuhuchu.

Mutheiwana Phadziri stands in an almost-empty kraal with a lone calf.

A young cattle farmer's hap-piness and dream of being one of the country's beef suppliers was shattered after his herd of cattle went missing while at a grazing camp late last month.

Mutheiwana Phadziri (29) says that he noticed that his cattle were not in the grazing camp or at home on 24 June and started searching for them. “We went as far as searching for the missing cattle on the farms at Bande-lierkop with the assistance of the Makhado stock theft unit, and the whole of Sinthumule and Kutama area,” says a worried Phadziri, "but we found nothing."

Phadziri then reported the matter to the Makhado Munici-pality's livestock control section

to find out if they had found his cattle roaming near the main road and perhaps impounded them. The results were negative; his cattle were not locked up at the livestock control kraal.

“I then reported the missing cattle at the Madombidzha satel-lite of the Tshilwavhusiku police station last week,” he tells. “Even today, as we speak, nobody has come up to say anything about stray cattle.” He adds that his only conclusion is that his herd of cattle was stolen. “I ask the community to help me find my cattle,” he adds. “We want to believe that someone might have seen something. Kha kholomo dzo tuwaho hu na dza vhadzimu (Some of these oxen belong to the

gods). That's the worst part about this whole issue, because people will suffer the pain that the gods might inflict on them.”

Phadziri explains that rearing a herd of cattle or any other live-stock requires a lot of energy and work in a country with low rain-fall. Most cattle owners normally hew grass along the roadside and take it home for the cattle. “We can't rear cattle and feed them all these years for them to just go missing in a single day,” he laments.

The spokesperson for the Tshilwavhusiku police, Const Munyadziwa Marindi, indicated, however, that no record of the said report could be seen in their case register.

Mutale Ward 4's newly elected councillor, Thinawanga Pandelani, says he is ready to deliver good service to the community. He received an overwhelming victory in a by–election last Wednesday. Pandelani (38), of Tshandama village, the candidate of the ANC, received 86.14% votes and the candidate of the DA, Mr Joshua Mudau, only 13.86%. The by-election was held after former councillor Mr Donald Nekhunguni resigned from his position to rejoin Thengwe Secondary School as a teacher.

The annual Musina Winter Games kicked off with a bang. Mayor Carol Phiri officially opened the games before a jubilant crowd of sport lovers at Lesley Manyathela Stadium on Monday.

The week-long games contin-ue until late today (Friday) and the prize-giving ceremony takes place tomorrow (Saturday).

Mayor Phiri said that the Musi-na Municipality was very proud to host the event, which aimed to discover and nurture young sporting talent.

“The importance of sports in the life of young people is valu-able and goes much further than the basic answer that it keeps kids off the streets. It does in fact keep young people off the streets, but it also instills lessons that are essential in the life of a

human being.”Phiri said thorough sports,

people could learn values like discipline, responsibility, self-confidence, sacrifice, and accountability. “It is up to the municipality, parents, teachers, sports teams, and schools to help mould, develop, and instill these qualities into the lives of young people.”

She added that the winter games programme will take a new direction from next year. “We acknowledge that there have been shortcomings in relation to the running of these games dur-ing the past. We have developed a policy that will assist us to run these games according to basic rules. This policy will be imple-mented in next year’s competi-tions – where we will focus on young people – especially those

of school-going age.”She said after the implemen-

tation of the policy next year, the municipality should be able to stand up and look back with pride and show the world that it had indeed developed talents like Lesley Slow Poison Manyathela. “We will also review how we reward the successful teams as from next year as we will be looking at giving out prizes that will add value to the talents of the young participants.”

She said sports provided many positive opportunities for the community, especially school children.

“Good sportsmanship provides guidelines that can be generalized to the classroom and lifelong achievement. It also teaches chil-dren to function in a competitive society.”

Canadian mining company Diamcor Mining has sold some of the fi rst diamonds recovered during the testing phase of their Krone-Endora diamond mine in the Soutpansberg-area.

Diamcor recently sold 3 123.32 carats of rough diamonds for a total amount of $425 495.03. The diamonds were recovered in August last year, during the commission of the expanded quarrying and in-fi eld screening operations of Krone-Endora.

Diamcor estimated that about half of the rough diamonds sold were recovered from treating previously processed 10mm material through the new expanded quarrying and in-fi eld screening operations, with the remaining recoveries coming from processing new material up to 12 mm in size.

“The overall dollar per carat achieved for these exercises certainly exceeded our expectations,” said Diamcor’s chief executive offi cer, Mr Dean Taylor.

Krone-Endora is situated just northwest of De Beers’ Venetia diamond mine. In total, the project covers a surface area of approximately 5 888 hec-tares. Diamcor acquired Krone-Endora from De Beers, in conjunction with a DMI South Africa subsidiary known as Nozala Investments (Pty) Ltd,

“Educate a child, inspire a community, transform a coun-try.”

The slogan for the annual De Beers Venetia Mine Bring a Child to Work Day initiative speaks to the importance of the South African youth and the signifi cant role that our future leaders will play in shaping the future.

This year, 26 Grade 11 and Grade 12 learners from Musina, Alldays and Taaiboschgroet were treated to an educational tour of Venetia Mine.

The expedition saw pupils

in mathematics, science and accounting interacting with members of the Venetia Young Professionals Society, exploring career opportunities in the min-ing industry and learning basic safety, health and environmental principles.

The action-packed programme included a visit to the Venetia open-pit viewpoint, main treat-ment plant, primary crusher and skills-development centre.

The assistant general man-ager, Mr Hendrick Matjila, and the public and corporate affairs manager, Ms Josephine Pieters,

addressed the scholars and em-phasized that the new Venetia underground project would be mined and managed by aspirant miners and future leaders from their generation. Attendees were encouraged to dream big and to work hard to make their dreams come true.

Through exposing the leaders of tomorrow to the exciting world of mining, Venetia Mine hopes to have inspired them to continue the diamond dream by utilizing the riches of the Limpopo Prov-ince to develop their communi-ties in a sustainable manner.

a 100% women-owned black economic empow-erment company. Taylor said that the sale would ensure a continuation of the company’s efforts to have the mine fully operational in the near future.

Government plans to sell rhino horns

Strike action averted at De Beers mines

Kgatla represents country in TanzaniaEnvironmental Affairs Minister Edna Mole-wa believes the government can stop rhino poaching by a once-off sale of rhino horns.

Molewa made this announcement during a media briefing on Wednesday, 3 July. Accord-ing to Molewa, the South African government has approved the development and submission of a proposal to the 17th conference of parties to CITES (Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora), which is scheduled to take place here in South Africa in 2016.

This proposal will try to lobby for the ban on international trade in rhino horn to be lifted to allow a once-off sale of South Africa’s rhino horn to address the poaching bloodbath in the country. “The establishment of a well-regulated international trade could assist in this regard, if implemented in conjunction with all the other interventions to curb rhino poaching,” said Molewa. “South Africa cannot continue to be held hostage by the syndicates who are slaugh-tering our rhinos,” Molewa added.

Molewa said South Africa had the ability to make rhino horn available on the market without impacting on the species, by means of a regulated trade system.

Deputy Director General of Biodiversity and Conservation of the Department of Environ-mental Affairs Mrs Fundisile Mketeni added that the aim was to sell horns collected from natural fatalities.

The one-off sale model is envisaged along the lines of four CITES-approved auctions of elephant ivory from Botswana, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe during 2008 to accredited traders from China and Japan. Mketeni said South Africa had about 16 437 kilograms of stockpiled rhino horn, while 2 091 kilograms were in private hands.

Members of CITES will vote on South Afri-ca’s proposal in 2016 when it has been submit-ted by Molewa’s department. At the time of Molewa’s press conference, a total number of 461 rhinos had been poached in South Africa for their horns.

In the meantime, the Limpopo Police an-nounced on Monday that they had arrested three suspected rhino poachers at a private game farm near Phalaborwa. One is a 50-year-old South African and two were unidentified Mozambicans.

According to provincial police spokesperson

Strike action was averted at De Beers’ three diamond mines in South Africa after a wage agreement was reached be-tween the mining company and the National Union of Mine Workers (NUM) on Friday.

This according to a press re-lease issued by De Beers Consol-idated Mines (DBCM). DBCM employs approximately 2 550 people working at their three South African mines, namely Kimberley, Venetia (north of the Soutpansberg) and Voorspoed (Free State). The NUM repre-sents 1 300 employees who fill the Bargaining Unit jobs at these operations. DBCM met with the NUM at the Council for Concil-iation, Mediation and Arbitration

(CCMA) on Wednesday, 3 July. This meeting followed a dispute declared early in the negotiations by the NUM on 12 June. The CCMA was, however, unable to mediate the dispute and issued a certificate to this effect on 3 July. That meant that the NUM was able to give the company 48 hours’ notice of its intention to embark on protected industrial action or the company might give the NUM 48 hours’ notice to lock out union members.

On 5 July, DBCM again met with the NUM and a wage agree-ment for 2013 was reached. The terms of settlement apply to jobs in the A, B and lower C band bargaining unit. The employees in these jobs will receive a 9% in-

crease effective from May 2013. The two parties also agreed to phase out the few (25) remaining A Band positions which still exist at the Kimberley Mines operation and at the DTC in Kimberley. As DBCM does not operate hostels, both parties also committed to engage around housing matters and to develop mechanisms which effectively promote home ownership for employees in the ‘Housing Gap market’. This will assist employees who fall between the Government RDP housing schemes and the formal home-loan market.

Amidst the negotiations, min-ing operations continued without interruption at all three of De Beers’ diamond mines.

A 17-year-old Musina High School pupil, Nathaniel Kgatla, recently represented the coun-try in Tanzania.

The young leader from Musina was part of a group of young

Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi, the police acted on a tip-off that the suspects were on their way to shoot and kill the rhinos for their horns. The situation, said Mulaudzi, was monitored and the suspects were spotted in their Ford Fiesta on Sunday near Hoedspruit. The police’s tactical response team and stock theft unit immediately closed in on the suspects and arrested them. During the arrest, an unlicensed hunting rifle and 9mm-pistol were found in the suspects’ possession.

Mulaudzi reminded the public that reward mon-ey of up to R500 000 can be paid to members of the public who can provide information that will lead to the arrest and conviction of suspects involved in the act of rhino poaching or dealing in rhino horns.

The tour was organ-ised by the Somafaco Trust, in partnership with the National Her-itage Council (NHC) of South Africa.

The OR Tambo Edu-tour is aimed at giv-ing young people the opportunity to learn about the history of the Solomon Mahlangu Freedom College, the ANC and the freedom fighters who died in exile while mobilising an underground war to challenge the apartheid

government.Kgatla gained this opportunity

after participating in the Nation-al Heritage Council Outreach Programme in October of 2012, where he and three other pupils

from Musina High, Mpho Brian Tlou, Tshifhiwa Mokone and Polite Singo, won first place in the NHC Outreach Competition.

They also won R25 000 worth of books for their school.

Unity fostered as new mosque opens in ThohoyandouSix years of selfless sacrifice, dedica-tion and hard work among Muslims in Thohoyandou paid off when a state-of-the-art mosque they were building was finally opened.

The Masjid-E-Chistiya Ashrafia in Thohoyandou Block F, whose construc-tion started in 2006, was opened with pomp and ceremony at the weekend. The mosque, which is believed to be the sec-ond largest in Africa, was built through own contributions by the community and was officially opened by Sayyed Hasan Askari Ashrafi, Sayyed Hamza Ashrafi and Cllr Tshifhiwa Dali, the acting Vhem-be district executive mayor.

Hasan Ashrafi is the highest Muslim spiritual leader from Chistiya Ashrafiya international.

The opening was witnessed by coun-cillors from Thulamela, officials from Vhembe district, police officials and many community members. The ceremony was hailed as a uniting factor in a community that is forging unity between Indians and the local community of Thohoyandou, coming together to celebrate the opening.

Rafiq Lakha, a member of the executive at the mosque, said conditions at the old mosque, which is adjacent to the new one, were not conducive to good wor-shipping. “The building was small and

He said the mosque will seat more than 1 250 men and has adequate ablution. It is also unique as it has a floor area that can seat 400 women, which the old one did not have.

Sayyed Hasan Askari Ashrafi urged the

Muslim community to continue doing the good work of assisting the community. He added that he was impressed by the build-ing. “We are more than impressed by the ever-increasing number of Muslims in this area. It is indeed befitting that this building is being opened to cater for the spiritual needs of this community,” said Ashrafi.

Youth Month closed in style

Youth to take education seriously

The juvenile inmates in the Makha-do Correctional Service Centre closed Youth Month in style dur-ing an event held at the centre a fortnight ago. They participated in several traditional dances during the event, while their choir also performed.

Mr Tshilidzi Masikwa of the Tho-hoyandou Victim Empowerment Programme (TVEP) encouraged the juveniles to ensure that people with good influence surround them at all times. He also said that the future of a person was often a result of the deci-sions he made and he encouraged the prisoners never to let their situations deprive them of a wonderful future.

Mr Solomon Demane from the Makhado Correctional Services Cen-

tre said that it had become necessary to interact with different stakeholders in order to make them aware of how they were operating. “We have a mandate to look after offenders and to rehabilitate them while in prison. We should also work out the best way to assist ex-prisoners to make the best of their lives after their release. This is a mammoth task and we feel we will not succeed alone,” he added.

He emphasised that prisoners were normal “people like us. They have made their mistakes, but paid their dues. Let us regard them as reformed beings and help reintegrate them into society. It is our responsibility as a community to see this programme succeeding. Together, we can always do more,” he added.

When the mother of a 56-year-old PhD graduate addressed a large crowd of well-wishers about the difficulties and challenges of taking her son through school, everyone was moved.

“I had to cut the grass to sell for profit and mould clay products to pay my son’s school fees,” recalls the lady, Vhakoma Vho-Alidzuli Mufamadi.

Mufamadi was speaking during the celebration when her son and local headman, Godani Samuel Mashau, successfully obtained a PhD in Eng-lish Studies through the University of Limpopo. The purpose of the event, held at Mavhina at Ha-Mashau-Bod-we on Saturday, was to encourage the youth within the village to take education seriously.

There was an atmosphere of ex-cellence and motivation in the rocky village as the column of graduates dressed in academic regalia marched from the local church to Nwaridi Secondary School.

Mashau completed his matric in 1976 and went on to achieve a BA degree at the University of Venda (1985), majoring in English and Tshivenda; a BA Hons degree in African Languages ( Unisa, 1990), a BA Hons in English (Univen, 1995) and an MA degree in English Studies at the University of Limpopo in 2005

before obtaining his PhD.For his PhD, he produced a disser-

tation titled Myth as a tool of literary, socio-economic, cultural and political liberation in selected works of Naguib Mahfouz , Ngugi wa Thing’o and Zakes Mda.

Mashau has had a deep love for English studies from a very young age. “Studies in English have em-powered me not only to teach it but to give guidance in the teaching of the English language with ease,” said Dr Mashau. “Research has enabled me to influence and guide both teachers and learners on research and writing skills.”

Mashau started working at Vhafam-adi Secondary School in 1980, and became a principal of Davhana Sec-ondary School at the young age of 27. Ever since then, he has been active in the national examination board as a sub-examiner.

Differrent stakeholders within the community, including friends, family members, representatives of the church, the school and the youth, wished Mashau well.

The community leader, Vho-Simon Magoro, said the community was very proud of having a doctor of English studies among them. “He has set him-self a milestone and our children will have to look up to him for guidance and motivation,” Magoro concluded.

Two Limpopo residents lead arts forum

South African ingenuity rewarded

Two personalities from Limpopo are at the helm of a national forum for the development and empowerment of artists, models, actors, presenters and dancers, established during a meeting early last week in Pretoria.

Project manager Freedom Boikanyo, with as-sistant project manager Kotie van der Merwe, dis-closed details of their ambitious project during an interview in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) last week.

“Our mission is to unlock the doors for upcoming artists, with a vision to assist them to the upper levels,” says Freedom.

They envisage that the national dance, mod-elling, music and acting (DMMA) forum will ensure that upcoming artists will get the necessary recognition among all the relevant authorities and structures.

“It can change a lot of lives. The organization stands for development and empowerment and for the creation of managerial structures and processes, which will refl ect the demographics and values of the wider society.

“The forum is pro-transformation and we envisage to be the foremost organization in the

Individuals or small- and medium-sized busi-nesses who have developed or are pioneering some form of technological innovation that requires local and international networks, men-torship and funding to get to the next level have until 30 September 2013 to pitch their ideas in a new innovation competition.

This robust new commercialisation support programme, The Step-Up Technology Innovation Competition, will fast-track the commercialization and business development of technology innova-tions – big and small.

Sponsored by government’s Technology In-novation Agency (TIA) and Sasol’s enterprise development vehicle, Sasol ChemCity, Step-Up seeks innovations in the health and biotechnology, chemicals, mining and manufacturing, information and communication technologies, food and agricul-ture, energy and green environment sectors.

This multi-faceted collaborative programme aims to address the most relevant networking, business, fi nancing and knowledge requirements of each participant who reaches the fi nalist stage. Entry is open to any South African over the age of 16, who can enter online on www.step-up.org.za.

The TIA and Sasol ChemCity will evaluate entries for inclusion in their extensive range of fi nancial and non-fi nancial support programmes, whether it is an initial idea or an existing innovation business. This is additional to the prizes and other benefi ts associated with winning the competition.

Finalists and winners stand to benefit from global introductions to business leaders through the international partnership group, The SABLE Ac-celerator (South African Business Link to Experts), dedicated to helping South African entrepreneurs, new venture start-ups, academic institutions, and companies who commercialise technology inno-vations, promote and protect intellectual property, fund new business concepts, fi nance growth, and expand into global markets.

Top achievers in the competition will be assessed for possible funding by venture capital and growth

development of managerial leadership and advanc-ing development transformation of artists, actors, models, presenters and dancers in South Africa.”

Ms Kotie van der Merwe and Mr Freedom Boikanyo, founder members of the national DMMA forum.

Representatives from various towns in various provinces were previ-ously recruited and ac-tivated for the founder meeting in Pretoria.

The official launch of the forum will take place later this year, but Freedom and Kotie gave a glimpse of some of the upcoming events to be organized by the forum. These include competitions to fi nd The Face of Limpopo and The Face of Gauteng during November and culminating in The Face of South Africa, early in December this year.

Vhutsila Books to be used at schoolsThe national Department of Education has recommended that a local publishing compa-ny, Vhutsila, be used to produce the material for the Tshivenda language studies in the new curriculum (CAPS) next year. The series of grammar books titled Mbeu ya Luambo (The

seed of language) will be used in grades seven, eight and nine.

The company’s founder, prominent Tshivenda author, TV and radio drama actor and stage writer Rudzani Tshianane, says they feel greatly hon-oured by this announcement. He says their books have unpacked the new syllabus in a user-friendly and informative manner. “As an infant, black-owned but very reliable and professional pub-lishing company, we are proud to have achieved our desire and set goal,” he said. According to Mr Tshianane, their books were produced by a team of experts. “Those who teach Tshivenda will love our books. The well-known author, Mudzulathun-go Mmbi, is the leading author of our grammar series,” he adds. According to Mr Mmbi, his goal is to preserve the Tshivenda language, which is gradually disappearing. Mr Mmbi is also an inter-nal moderator of the CAPS exam and he says that it is important to try and ensure that the language is written and spoken correctly. Since its inception in 2007, Vhutsila has published only two books, but this year their grammar and literature series of books was recognised and recommended nation-

wide for teaching and learning Tshivenda. One of the authors, Ms Maria Nevondo, says they were ecstatic when they heard that their material was se-lected ahead of many other publishers who had been in the fi eld for many years.

“We’ve realised our language was lost and we invested the time in our work. If teachers use these books wise-ly, pupils will benefi t enormously and revive their home language,” she says.

funding vehicles, with a focus on alleviating the country’s socio-economic and environmental challenges. These include global and local heav-yweights Hasso Plattner Ventures Africa, Impact Amplifi er, Crowdinvest and Horizen Ventures.

The competition is open to early-stage innova-tors working on projects or ideas with commercial potential, or more established innovation-based SMMEs in need of fi nancial or non-fi nancial sup-port in scaling up. It has the potential to accelerate rapid progress by linking entrepreneurs to the right people, sources of funding and business-develop-ment resources.

In an effort to promote the Mapungubwe Heritage Tour (Tour de Tuli), which is normally held in September each year in the Vhembe district, some of the Vhembe District Municipality officials toured Zimbabwe’s Chiredzi town a fortnight ago. They also attended the Greater Limpopo Cultural Festival. Photographed from left to right are Cllr Elizabeth Moselakoe, Cllr Phineas Temba and the Minister of Hospitality and Tourism in Zimbabwe, Mr Walter Mzembi.

Liaison officers from various departments and municipalities in Vhembe recently held a communicator’s conference and shared their programmes, challenges and experiences during an event at the Vhembe Disaster Centre in Muledane.

Like many people in all parts of the country, the Vhembe District Municipality on Monday held a prayer session for former president Nelson Mandela. “We have gathered here to pray for one of the liberation struggle icons of our country, Africa and the whole world. We have come together to ask our almighty God to provide good health to our struggle icon. We know that with God nothing is impossible,” said Vhembe Executive Mayor Tshitereke Matibe. Matibe, who was joined by officials and representatives of various bodies held a prayer session in the council chambers in Thohoyandou. Photographed from left to right after the prayer session are Moulana Sheik Umar, Archbishop Mutswari, Pastor Sam Mahamba, the chairperson of the Venda Muslim Community, Mathia Abdul, Executive Mayor Tshitereke Matibe and Vhembe Speaker Cllr Mavuyisi Fungheni.

Manchester United scrape through to the quarter finalsNgwenani Manchester United booked a place in the quarterfinals of the Mulindavhathu Soccer Chal-lenge by beating Mudaswali United Brothers 1-0 at the Khubvi Benjies grounds on Sunday.

United Brothers had nobody else to blame for the defeat, as they squandered numerous scoring op-portunities. Manchester were out of touch in the opening minutes. United Brothers capitalised and put more pressure on their defence. It took Brothers 24 minutes to realise that it was not their day. They were awarded a penalty after Khuliso Tshivhengwa was brought down within the penalty area. Fhulufhelo Tshikalange suffered the pain of watching his volley going a little wide, much to the disappoint-ment of the team’s fans.

United Brothers continued to create more dangerous moves from behind,

but their strikers went on shooting aimlessly at the goal mouth.

The keeper of Manchester United, Ndamulelo Ratshikombo, denied United Brothers a sure goal in the 39th minute. Unarine Rambuda tried his luck from outside the box and Ratshikombo palmed the ball away for a corner kick. Manchester United came close to scoring two minutes before the break. Thinavhuyo Khuvhe went loose from the left corner and unleashed a ground cutter. The ball hit the woodwork and bounced outside the field of play for a goal kick.

The second half saw United Broth-ers wasting more scoring oppor-tunities. The goal which separated the boys from the men came seven minutes towards the final whistle. Thinavhuyo Khuvhe received a return pass from Jacob Mamatsharaga and showed the keeper the wrong way.

Iyarunga enjoyed more ball possession, but their promising moves were turned into a night-mare by the defence of Bucs. The home side was strong at the far back and in the striking force department.

In the 37th minute, Philemon Maalazwanda scored for Iyarunga. The centre forward of Iyarunga, Tumelo Managnyi, went into the ref-eree’s book, following dangerous play on Erlyn Nndwambi. Daniel Masedi scored his team’s second in the 64th minute.

The home team realised that it was not their day when they missed three chances in the 74th, 76th and 79th minute respectively. The players who made the supporters jump from their seats in disbelief were Abel Rambuda, Rio Ramabulana and Phrthani Sikhwivhilu. Mashudu Mbau scored Bucs’ only goal, when he received a beautiful pass from Vincent Mathogolo in the 84th minute.

In the 88th minute, Moses Mabeba left the keeper flatfooted after receiving a neat pass from Meshack Matiya and scored.

During the handing over are, from left to right: Mr Abel Rakoma (Safa Capricorn president), Ms Emily Mdebele, Refentse Shinners (SAB), Mr George Kubayi (Safa Vhembe president) and Safa Sekhukhuni president Mr Lazarus Hlokwane.

Players parading in their new colours are, from left, Class Maloma, Tjatji Lehlonono, Thabang Ikhageng, Elias Mnakhe and Thabiso Moela.

SAB teams to parade in new coloursThe top five teams in five districts of Limpopo who will participate in the Safa SAB promotional play-offs will play their matches in new kit.

The official handing over of the kit was held at Jan Furse in Sekhukhune last Thursday.

The two teams that end up in the top two positions will be promoted to the Safa Limpopo second division, known as the Vodacom league. The play-offs will take place at a later date.

During the handing over, SAB’s corporate affairs manager for the northern region, Ms Re-fentse Shinners, said SAB was a proud sup-porter of local football development and “we undertook this sponsor-ship primarily to show-case our support for the sport, because it will help us engage with the people of South Africa.”

She indicated that her company was plough-ing back what it gained from the community. She said that Limpopo was a province rich in talent and "we have over the years seen some

talented South African soccer players being unearthed from this province".

According to her, SAB was committed to local football de-velopment. SAB would like to continue to develop their rela-tionship with the 52 regions of Safa, she added.

Mr Abel “The Lip” Rakoma of Safa Limpopo stated that the government could not curb the high rate of unemployment alone. He appealed to the busi-

ness community to follow in the footsteps of SAB, saying sports had become a major employment provider of late.

He defined football as a good vehicle to fight unemployment and poverty.

According to Mr Edwin Ram-phabana of Joe Express, they are fully prepared for the league's heat. According to him, they have talented players in Thembisani Neluvhada, Lenock Mabila, and Dakalo Ratshitanga.

Friends, relatives and com-munity members braved the cold weather last Saturday and descended on the Tshioz-wi cemetery to bid farewell to a well-known street hawker, Tshioma “Seale” Musenwa.

He passed away on 29 June in the Polokwane Provincial Hospi-tal after a short illness.

When the coffin was low-ered, the sound of hymns was

overpowered by the weeping of Musenwa’s friends and rel-atives. Mr Steven Mamburu, family spokesperson, said that the family was in total shock by his untimely death. He said that Tshioma was a pillar of strength to the family and the whole community.

“The pain we experience as a family is more than words can express,” said Mamburu. “We

thank the community for their support since the tragedy struck us. Your presence and contribu-tions made us strong,” he added.

“We are gathered here today with heavy hearts and we can’t remove the sadness,” said a friend, Mr Tendani Phungo.

"We will always remember Tshioma, because he had done so many good things for this community.”

Peace Makers kick Ficus out of GamesLamvi Ficus FC will not take part in the quarterfinal stage of the Mulindavhathu Soccer Challenge.

They were booted out of the tournament by Khubvi Peace Makers, who beat them 2-0 at the Khubvi Benjies grounds on Sunday.

Although one of their key midfielders, Ipfi Muthubi, was reprimanded with a card in the 14th minute, Peace Makers did not lose their fighting spirit. They continued to pressure their oppo-nents by creating some promising moves from the centre of the pitch.

T h i n g s t u r n e d against Ficus in the 24th minute, when their left flank, Fhatu-wani Mbevhana, was given his marching orders after a contin-ued argument with the referee.

Ficus fought like a wounded tiger af-ter the incident. Their front runner, Vic-tor Netshipale, was brought down within the box and the refer-ee did not hesitate to award them a penalty. Their keeper, Mbu-laiseni Munyai, caused

an upset by shooting straight to the keeper, who easily saved the ground cutter. Ficus were the first to introduce a new face to their starting lineup. They replaced Kholwi Mathivha with Lufuno Munzhelele three minutes into the last half. Peace Makers opened their account in the 64th minute. Ipfi Muthubi went loose from the right cor-ner, from where he blasted in a rocket. Peace Makers later

replaced Madambi Badzhi with Takali Netshavhungwe in a bid to strengthen their midfield. Netshavhungwe formed a dead-ly combination with Mashudu Mukwevho. Ipfi Muthubi com-pleted his brace in the 78th minute after a rebound. The keeper of Ficus, Mbulaiseni Munyai, mishandled the ball and Muthubi, who was waiting nearby, made no mistake to bring the final score to 2-0.

Music legend Shalati Joseph Khosa.

The much-decorated musician and choral music composer and conductor, Shalati Joseph Kho-sa (67), who was regarded as one of the most prolific composers in Southern Africa, is dead.

His death has left his family and the community shattered.

Khosa, whose compositions have been per-formed by several mass choirs, died at the Phal-aborwa Medi Clinic on July 3 after a short illness.

Family spokesperson Nkhensani Maluleke, née Khosa, said the death of the icon left the family devastated. “We take solace in the fact that he has lived life to the full and has done his best for anyone in the family,” she said.

She said the memorial service will be held at the Phalaborwa community hall on Friday.

Khosa was one of the most highly respected choral musicians in the country. He was the first recipient of the Limpopo Premier's Anglo-Platinum Award when this honour was bestowed on him at the Transnet Massed Choir Festival in 2006. He was also honoured with a choral music festival at Phalaborwa Hall by the SABC, in conjunction with Munghana Lonene in Polokwane.

In 1993, the National Symbols Committee at the World Trade Centre chose his song Vun'we (One-ness) as an alternative anthem for South Africa.

Songs by this multi-talented man are prescribed on a yearly basis for music competitions. In the 1980s, Khosa composed a song which was sung in both Shangaan and English, called Afrika Lontshwa (The New South Africa). The song was sung at the Roodepoort International Eisteddfod, where he conducted an international mass choir singing his song.

Khosa held a bachelor of musicology and a master’s degree in musicology from the University of Pretoria.

He also held a bachelor of arts degree from the University of South Africa, a teacher's diploma from the University of the North, a certificate of music and a French language certificate from the Louisiana University.

He had composed hundreds of songs after being commissioned by companies and church groups.

Among his proud choral works was a song he was commissioned to compose by South African Airways on Ubuntu (humanity) with special ref-erence to the treatment of people on aeroplanes.

Another is a song he composed to mark Eskom's 75th Anniversary in the 1980s. Sasol also commis-sioned him to compose a song which he used for a conductor's workshop organised by the company.

When the Kruger National Park celebrated 101 years in 2008, Khosa was commissioned to write a song that would be sung by the KNP choir for the occasion. Khosa composed the song The Great Wilderness Great, which is still popular.

“He conducted several music workshops around the world. Although he had retired, he still got invitations to hold workshops or adjudicate,” said Maluleke.

Khosa will be buried at Mabayeni family burial site on Saturday after the funeral service, which will be held at the Assemblies Church of God at Merwe A Village in Malamulele.

Limpopo ANC boss Falaza Mdaka has also sent condolences to the family.

“The death of this icon has left us the poorer and it will be hard to replace him,” said Mdaka.

Much decorated music legend dies

The Seventh Day Adventist Church recently extended its caring hand and donated food and clothes to orphans and vulnerable children around the Mpheni area. Ms Rineth Thanyani, head of the women´s group in the local Seventh Day Adventist Church, said they were touched by the plight of the poor children and decided to do something. She said the donation was not only meant for providing the children with meals. "We will also assist them to go to school." Photographed during the presentation of the clothes and foods were, from left to right, Polinah Phungo, Ronewa Matumba, Dineo Makhalimela and Rineth Thanyani.

“Disbandment of ANC and ANCYL structures painful but necessary”

Fourteen teams to play in Mulindavhathu

More sponsorships needed for Madiba’s Day

Food and blanket donation for Mandela Day

I guess it was not easy to arrive at decisions to disband the Limpopo

ANC and some ANCYL Provincial Executive Committees.

This warrants the rebuilding of structures from scratch, which require a lot of energy, human and financial resources. The disbandment was very necessary given the fact that the prov-ince had a leadership crisis, which manifested itself through tendencies of factionalism and chauvinism. We witnessed programmes of the peo-ple’s organisation being abandoned to pursue personal gains, thereby hampering the unity in the ANC and derail the delivery of service to our people.

The situation was worse at branch level in that real cadres of the move-ment were sidelined and the member-ship forms of those who do not agree with the leadership, thrown away, which defeats the ANC objective of growth. It is a pity that, in the process,

some cadres got discouraged and decided to be passive passengers in a bus, which they best know its desti-nation which was very unfortunate as the movement can only be corrected from within.

There is no vehicle for transforma-tion to a true non-racial and united society fighting to uplift the quality of life of all South Africans, especially the poor.

In the run-up to the national confer-ence, we have seen the ANC Limpopo PEC and the ANCYL displaying conduct very foreign to the move-ment, including insulting leaders of the ANC, because they had contrary views on leadership preferences. Mangaung was not the first and the last and comrades must understand that people will always have different opinions on who can best lead the organisation at any given time. In fact, that is what has made the organisation strong the way it is.

It is wrong and uncalled for to bulldoze branches, thereby making pronouncements on their behalf, as to who must lead the ANC at any given time, purging comrades and running away with branch packages, because they are likely to nominate contrary to the wishes of the lead-ership. Prophets of doom wrongly prophesied the collapse of the ANC after Mangaung and perceived con-testation for positions as divisions. To the contrary, the ANC emerged more victorious and united with a concrete programme of action to accelerate the delivery of services to our people.

Limpopo will always be the home of the ANC, because people love this glorious movement that liberated them.

There is no doubt that in the 2014 general elections, even the turnout will increase in favour of the ANC for an overwhelming victory.

Comrades must not take the recent disbandment of structures personal including a call for the ANC in Vhembe Region to follow suit, as it is a necessary intervention for the ANC to cleanse itself at this phase of the election campaign.

The ANC-led government has made a lot of strides in the past 19 years to uplift the quality of life of our people and a lot will still be done, guided by the blueprint for development over the next years adopted at the ANC National Con-ference.

Populists must be warned upfront that they are wasting their time and energy and will fail like the rest in coming up with an alternative to the ANC, as South Africa does not need additional armchair critics and good speakers because we have them in abundance. - Moss Tseli, former ANC Limpopo regional secretary writes in his personal capacity.

The Zoutpansberg Private Hospital in Makhado (Louis Trichardt)’s ambitious Man-dela Day project on 18 July is around the corner, but spon-sorships are still needed.

The hospital’s plan was to provide 10 free operations to 10 patients in need of urgent eye sur-gery. They indicated that an 11th patient has since been selected and that this patient’s costs now need to be covered. The patients are all from different racial and cultural backgrounds and have already been identified. These operations will be performed free of charge by two eye surgeons, while the services of the anaes-thetist are also free. The hospital itself will supply the theatre and theatre personnel at no cost.

A major stumbling block was the cost of the initial 10 theatre packs needed for the operations. In this regard, Alcon Pharma-ceuticals has donated R27 750

to help pay for the 10 in-theatre Phaco packs at a cost of R2 770 per pack. In addition, Clouds’ End and Mountain Inn Hotel have offered to sponsor the meals of the patients, surgeons, anaesthetist and theatre staff. The two hotels will also be sponsor-ing the hospitality tent for the patients’ caregivers, as well as accommodation for the doctors and caregivers who need to sleep over for the follow-up clinic the next day.

The hospital also indicated this week that the money needed to cover the theatre and ward medicine has been donated by the Louis Trichardt Rotary Club. More sponsorships are, however, needed for the 11th patient.

Persons wishing to contribute financially to the project are urged to do so. “You can donate any amount, even if it is just R10. We’ll add all the donations and purchase the necessary items

from the total amount,” says Ms Anneke Stroebel of the Zoutpans-berg Private Hospital. She adds that the public is also welcome to support the project by sponsoring their services, such as helping out by providing transport for the patients to and from the hospital. She has indicated that donations need not necessarily be made before 18 July but can still be done at the end of the month or whenever is convenient. Food sponsorships are also welcome.

For more information, phone Stroebel at Tel 015 516 0720 extension 6 or 083 326 6073. The banking details if one wants to make an electronic transfer or pay the money into their account directly are as follows: Standard Bank, branch code 052549, account no. 330190849, current account, reference Mandela Day. The reference is important, so that the money can be allocated correctly.

AFB Makhado, under the leadership of acting officer commanding Colonel Paul Madimabe, received a major donation last week of several tons of food and blankets for distribution to needy people and the elderly on Mandela Day.

The generous donation of bags of maize meal, crates of cooking

oil and margarine, boxes of soap, as well as blankets, was resourced at M Premjee and Son and facilitated by Makhado goodwill ambassador Mr Amie Chhaya.

The donations will be stored temporarily at the base and then distributed to needy people on 18 July (Mandela Day) at various places.

More than 17 projects have been identified by AFB Makhado in partnership with Chhaya for possible support in the form of renovations, cleaning and dona-tion of food.

The areas to receive support are Elim, Waterval, Matoks in Botlokwa, Makhado town in-cluding Tshikota, Sinthumule, Kutama and the Witvlag area.

Members of Air Force Base Makhado, together with goodwill ambassador Amie Chhaya, received a generous donation of foodstuff, soap and blankets on the premises of M. Premjee & Son in Makhado for distribution to elderly and poor residents in various communities of the Makhado Municipal area. From left to right are Sgt. Morris Mugudamani, Warrant Officier Joe Mphela, Col. Paul Madimabe, Acting Officier Commanding AFB Makhado, mr. Amie Chhaya, Chaplain Christopher Barends and Sgt. Thomas Mulaudzi.

Zamenkomste United the new champsZamenkomste United beat their younger brothers, Zam-ekonste FC, 1-0 in the final match of the winter tourna-ment at the Tshiozwi grounds on Sunday.

FC were strong at the far back and in the striking force department, while they lacked

cohesion in the middle of the park. The balls that threatened the defence of FC were bal-looned from behind.

No goal was seen during the first half. It was mainly influ-enced by the fact that United were cooling the ball down in the middle of the park, thus giv-

ing their opponents no chance to do as they pleased. United’s midfielder-cum-striker, Ray-mond Sinhugo, was booked for faking an injury in the 59th minute.

The only goal of the day was scored by Itani Dzhabuli of United in the 78th minute.

Phuluso Simata of United beats Khathutshelo Mukhumeni.

Itani Dzahabuli of United was the only goal scorer.

Khathutshelo Mukhumeni of FC

TOO LATE FOR CLASSIFICATION

A 26-year-old Zimbabwean was sentenced to an effec-tive four months in jail for head-butting and punching his 60-year-old father in the face, after his father had rebuked him over his dagga-smoking habit.

Allan Chishapira was con-victed on his own plea by a local magistrate, Mr Maphios Moyo.

He was sentenced to six

months in jail, of which two months were suspended for five years, on condition of good behaviour.

The court heard that on 29 June at about 12:40, the complainant was at his house when his son, Allan, arrived home after having smoked dagga. He proceeded to the spare bedroom, looking for some glue to sniff. His father followed him to the room and

started rebuking him over his smoking habits.

The younger man got angry and started insulting his father, during which an altercation en-sued between the two. The court was told that Allan head-butted his father and then continued to punch him all over the face.

The father reported the matter to the police, leading to his son’s arrest.

A new addition to Afro-soul music

Vanempha is a newcomer to Tshivenda Afro-soul with her unique voice.

In a country where everyone professes to be a musician or singer but rushes to dish up shoddy projects with the sole intention of financial gain and making a good name, Vanessa Mphanama’s voice is heartwarming and a comfort that artists still exist among the people.

The 27-year-old singer, popularly known in music circles as Vanempha, is a new addition to the Afro-soul genre whose debut album is con-tinuing to receive massive acknowledgement in the province. “I love music so much that I live on it,” she reveals and adds that she was born in the deep rural village of Ngwenani ya ha Mapholi, where she currently resides.

Listening to Untold Story is like unpacking the dimensions of a talent whose entry into the music industry was long overdue. She has ar unique voice, and she doesn't try to imitate the artists who came before her.

Vanempha only released her album a couple of months ago, after distributing an offering of her single to radio stations for sample purposes. Her single, Phala-phala, was dedicated to Phala Phala FM and instantly became popular with listeners. “I believe that I am talented; even my fans say so,” she adds.

Rradio stations were inundated with calls from fans asking about the availability of the album of the woman who sang so well, and that was when Vanempha decided to go back to the studio to record more songs, which eventually made up Untold Story. “I was raised by my grandmother,

Vho-Nyamutshagole Pharamela, whose love of music is immeasurable,” said Vanempha.

Perhaps this singer ought to show her gratitude to Hani Mutele, the man who mixed and mastered her songs. Mutele is a keen, talented and reputable engineer from this district.

Vanempha is a movie actor and comedian, and is also a script writer, whose short drama will be aired soon on Phala Phala FM. The drama is titled Riswiswini Lihulu.

Residents pose with the Munyemela electrical contractor.

One of the Munyemela electrical workers, busy installing cables at Manyuwa.

Electricity for the Manyuwa community For the almost-forgotten community of Manyu-wa near the Timbadola plantation, a ray of hope is starting to shine. This isolated community will soon have electricity, and an access road to the village is in the planning stage.

When Mirror visited the area about a month ago, an electrical contractor, Munyemela, was busy erecting poles and connecting the cables. Resi-dents of the village who had to rely on candles and paraffin lamps welcomed the new developments, but still feel that they have been left behind as far as development is concerned. The village still has no access roads, no pipelines to bring water, no health facilities, no schools or places of recreation. Children have to travel almost 10 kilometres to attend primary and secondary schools in the nearby villages. When it rains, they cannot cross the river.

A resident, Ms Grace Nemakhavhani, said they were forced to collect water for household purposes from a nearby river and spring. This river is polluted and, at any given time, cattle and goats can be spot-ted drinking from and defecating in the water. “No one wants to get involved with our problems here. We are also appealing for assistance in erecting a bridge across the river which separates Shanzha and Manyuha," she said.

The other major need in the village is a clinic to assist when people are ill. According to Ms Nemakhavhani, the community members rely on the services at the Phadzima clinic, which is some 17 kilometres away.

According to Chief Nndanganeni Manyuwa, a clinic was proposed at their village, but up to now, nothing has been done. He said that in the event of

a death in the community, the body of the deceased had to be carried over long distances to a mortuary. “During the day of the funeral, the mortuary vans have to park at Shanza village, so that we can carry the coffin and walk the 10km up the mountain to the burial site. It is difficult to carry a coffin in the mountain where there is no road,” he said.

Thulamela Municipality's spokesperson, Nndwa-mato Tshiila, said the installation of electricity was almost finished and the community of Manyawa would soon enjoy the fruits of democracy like others. Tshiila said the municipality was building an access road to Manyuwa village and, before long, people would be able to reach Thohoyandou and other towns without problems.

Dedication ceremony for new house of pastorSounds of “amen” and “hal-lelujah” reverberated in the house when Rev Malondi Mu-dau, the Zoutpansberg District Superintendent of The Church of the Nazarene, joined by church members, dedicated the Muthubi house in Muledane.

The dedication ceremony was attended by many members of the community, neighbours and fellow congregants from the Lwamondo-Tshifulanani Naz-arene branch where the house owner, Rev Lethabo Muthubi, is pastor. The service took place on Sunday afternoon.

House owners Lethabo and his wife Tshilidzi said they asked

God to help them build a home and felt that it would be the best thing for them to give thanks for the completed house. “Tradition-al rituals are held when people thank their ancestors for their successes. As Christians, we felt that we had to do it in full view of the people. We are children of the mighty God who protects and provides for his children,” said Lethabo Muthubi.

He said they wanted to share their happiness with all the peo-ple.

Muthubi said when they start-ed, they did not have money as they were only getting enough for them to survive as a family, but

out of that nothing God helped them build the house. “We are very grateful and we would like to thank God for this house. In this house, we see the grace of God.” In dedicating the house, Rev Malindi Mudau, the Zout-pansberg District Superintendent of The Church of the Nazarene, urged all to put God first and make him the foundation in all they do. “We are just happy that you thought of God as your foundation and security. The Psalmist says that if the Lord does not build a house, then those who build it work in vain, which shall not be the case here,” said Mudau.

No place for the dead in Waterval cemetery The community of Water-val is currently experiencing the problem of not having a graveyard where they can lay their kindred to rest, as the old cemetery is full.

According to the secretary of the Waterval Sanco, Mr Andy Munyai, the community has en-gaged the municipality on many occasions from the time of the former mayor, Mavhungu Luru-li. Empty promises have been piling upon unfulfilled promises, he said. “Our community was established in around 1986, and 27 years later we are still with-out a cemetery of our own,” said Munyai.

“The community bury their loved ones in the nearby Elim cemetery, which is full to the brim. We have raised this issue be-fore and former mayor Mavhungu Luruli even went on air, saying that the graveyard had been secured and that an en-vironmental compact assessment had been conducted successful-ly. But nothing was done!”

However, Munyai says, the community representative com-mittee on which he sat has also engaged the present mayor, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi, the Speaker, municipal manager and some mu-

nicipal councillors on the issue and it was eventually agreed that the municipality would address the “Waterval disgrace” as a matter of urgency.

“We now say enough is enough,” says Munyai. “If the municipality doesn’t want to help us, they must tell us outright and stop beating around the bush. We are even considering writing to the national office of the ANC that the municipality is betraying us.”

Now residents have acciden-tally damaged the main water pipe which runs through the graveyard while attempting to

dig a grave. “This graveyard is full and

there are water pipes running through remaining spaces,” Munyai complained.

Makhado Municipality’s Mr Louis Bobodi said that the municipality was aware of the problem raised by the Waterval community. “We are in talks with the local traditional coun-cil to give us a piece of land,” Bobodi said.

“We can assure the communi-ty that they will get a graveyard of their own, since it is also covered in the 2013/14 financial year’s budget.”

The Elim graveyard is full.

Waterval Sanco´s Mr Thomas Chauke and Mr Andy Munyai stand inside the partially dug grave, where a water pipe was damaged by grave diggers.

The best goalkeeper, Edward Tshiluka of Masakona, receives his trophy from the sponsor, Mr Ntevhedzeni Makhuvha.

The player of the tournament, Vhutshilo Nthangeni of Univen, receives his trophy from Mr Ntevhedzeni Makhuvha.

The captain of Masakona, Marks Munyai (second from left), receives his team’s trophy from the sponsor, Mr Ntevhedzeni Makhuvha (second from right), while other dignitaries look on.

Masakona win Univen pre-season contestUniven FC are still battling to come to terms with the 0-2 de-feat they suffered at the hands of Masakona FC in the final of the Univen Pre-Season Winter Tournament at the Univen Stadium on Saturday.

Realising that their fitness was below par, Masakona slowed down the tempo of the game. Instead of forcing matters within the first 20 minutes of the game, Univen adopted a wait-and-see style of play. Masakona gained momentum as the game pro-gressed.

The referee, Mr Eric Munyai, booked Ishmael Mabape of Uni-ven for a late tackle on Vuledzani Khomola in the 29th minute. The sharpshooter of Masakona, Gift Ramaxwaila, caught the Univen keeper, Tiego Mpoti, napping and beat him with a long-range half-volley.

Phathutshedzo Matodzi of Univen was lucky to escape with yellow after tackling Eugene Mulaudzi from behind. The score was 1-0 at half time.

Masakona started to play en-tertaining football after introduc-

ing Marks Munyai and Meshack Maphangule early in the second half. The keeper of Masakona, Edward Tshiluka, made his pres-ence felt in the 54th minute. He denied Mutali “Bodelo” Mulaud-zi what everyone thought was a sure goal. Bobelo unleashed a volley from the 35-meter area. Tshiluka stretched to the limit to palm the ball away for a corner kick.

Masakona played the last 20 minutes of the game with 10 men. Gift Ramaxwaila was given his marching orders, following a

heated argument with the referee.

Univen invaded the opponents’ territory soon afterwards, but they could not find their way through the defence of Masakona.

L i t s h a n i M u d a u scored the second goal for Masakona four min-utes before the final whistle.

Masakona received R2 000, a floating tro-phy and gold medals during a ceremony that was held at the stadium shortly after the final. The runners-up, Univen FC, took home R900 and silver medals, while the third prize of bronze medals was presented to Mahematshena Flying Birds. Mahematshena beat Maniini FC 1-0 in their losers’ final match.

The top goal scorer award was presented to Polly Radzilani of Univ-en. He scored two goals in the tournament. An-other player of Univen, Vhutshilo Nthangeni, was the winner of the best player of the tour-nament award. The best goalkeeper award was presented to Edward Tshiluka of Masakona. The coach of Masakona, Mr Dan Mashapha, was the winner of the best coach award. Takalani Mphaphuli of Maniini was the winner of the special award.

Four teams, Masako-na FC, Maniini FC, Mahematshena Flying Birds and the hosts, Uni-ven FC, took part in the one-day event.

Marks Maphiri of Masakona controls the ball, while Vhutshilo Nthangeni of Univen pulls him from behind.

Black Leopards release 18 players

In a quest to rebuild the team and to reclaim their status in the Premier Soccer League (PSL), Black Leopards have released 18 players ahead of the new season.

Most of the players who were released featured primarily in the fi rst team last season. This was confi rmed by the team’s newly appointed public relations offi cer, Mr Barry Ramunenyiwa, who said Leopards wanted to make a quick return to the elite league.

Ramunenyiwa said it was coach Kosta Papic’s

wish to release all 18 players as he wanted to rebuild the team.

Among the players who were released were Er-not Dzaga, Nkosiyabo Xakane, Humphrey Khoza, skipper Mongedzi Bobe, Azwindini Maphaha, Ayanda Mtshali, Victor Gamuka, Moses Kwena, Ntsolise Gumede, Thulani Nontshingila, and Josh-ua Obaje. Vincent Mabusela and Postnet Omony were also given free clearance.

Papic recently started with trials in search of new players in Thohoyandou. Speaking about the team’s new season plan, Ramunenyiwa said: “The team will have a complete new look in terms of
