R20 billion investment

Local communities to gain from

The De Beers Venetia Mine, sit-uated north of the Soutpansberg, launched the construction phase of the development of an underground project on Tuesday at the site.

The company invested R20 billion towards turning the current open-site mine into an underground mine by 2021.

Anglo-American PLC’s CEO and De Beers Group’s chairman Mark Cutifani said that a huge workforce of skilled women and men would make the job possible. “In 2016, when the lateral development work begins beneath our feet, there will be an exciting hive of activity – de-signed with optimum safety in mind,” Cutifani said.

He said that De Beers would also continue to enrich and help the local communities, by providing employ-ment and bursaries, building houses and developing the youth. According to Cutifani, fi rst diamonds will be produced in 2021 and the mining

production is set to continue into the 2040s. Some of the dignitaries who attended the event included Pres Jacob Zuma, Min Susan Shabangu (Mineral Resources), Premier Stan-ley Mathabatha and the British High Commissioner in South Africa, Ms Judith Macgregor.

Zuma said that the launch of the underground project marked an im-portant milestone in the development of the diamond industry and the country’s mining sector. “The mining sector remains the cornerstone of the economy, due to the number of direct and indirect jobs, its export earnings and other benefits,” said Zuma. “Estimates suggest that our mineral resources will be exploitable for over a century to come.”

He called De Beers’ R20 billion investment in the diamond industry the “biggest single investment in the diamond industry in decades”. “[This] signals that indeed our mining sector is poised for growth, and that it has a bright future,” he stated.

With the Bosvelder train now offering sleeper accommodation once more, passengers can once again step into the bygone era of train travel.

Mainline Passenger Services in Makhado (Louis Trichardt), a division of the Passenger Rail

Agency of South Afri-ca (PRASA), recently introduced coupé and family compartments that are not only com-fortable but also safe for the Bosvelder train. The Bosvelder runs between Musina and Johannes-burg, twice a week, on Thursdays and Sundays. On Wednesdays and Fridays, the train travels

from Johannesburg back to Musina.Family compartments can accommodate families

of up to six members. The coupé compartments can accomodate up to three people, and are perfect for couples.

The compartments offer bedding, a washing basin, overhead lighting, and secure locks. Security on the Bosvelder has also been increased to ensure that passengers are always safe.

The Limpopo Station Operational Manager, Ronelle Vermaak, invites travellers to make their next booking or reservation on the Bosvelder with one of their friendly sales staff. Clients can phone the office at 015 519 4202 and speak to Thomas Ramulondi, Melvin Mulaudzi and Samuel Masha-ba. For bookings in Musina, John Matumba or Noli Cwane can be contacted at 015 534 7225 during normal office hours.

R20 billion investment at Venetia Mine From Page 1Pres Zuma reminded the guests

that South Africa has been ex-porting diamonds for over a century and has not developed the local diamond-cutting and jewellery-polishing industries. “We have therefore not been reaping the full benefits of our commodities,” he said.

“We have thus identified jew-ellery manufacturing as a pri-ority area. Min Shabangu will be hosting the first Jewellery Forum this week (Wednesday), which should generate the ideas that will help take the process further.”

Zuma invited foreign inves-tors to invest in South African business. “South Africa is open for both domestic and foreign investment,” he said.

Zuma pointed out that the Marikana tragedy last year re-minded the government and mining companies of the need to deepen longstanding work direct-ed towards improving the lives of mineworkers and surrounding communities.

“In terms of the Mining Char-ter, mining companies are re-quired to improve housing and living conditions of workers,” he said.

He further highlighted that the Mapungubwe World Heritage Site and the buffer zone are le-gally protected.

“Considerate care must be tak-en to prevent any possible harm-ful effects to the area through mining,” he cautioned. He then added that the change of the mining method from open-site to underground would ensure that the heritage site was not endangered.

De Beers also announced the President JG Zuma Bursary Scheme, which will award a full bursary to a deserving student annually.

Beit Bridge police officer roasted by judge about treatment of suspectIn yet another successful claim for unlawful arrest against the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Lim-popo, the Minister of Police and a police captain this time have to fork out over half a million rand in damages.

The North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria handed down judgement in favour of 32-year-old Mr Rassie van der Laarse, an employee of No-mad Freight Musi-na (Pty) Ltd, on Friday, 18 October.

Van der Laarse was unlawful ly arrested by Capt. Edward Sello Se-kelele (second de-fendant in the case), an SAPS captain stationed at the po-lice’s border control area at Beit Bridge, in May 2010. He was detained for almost three days in what Judge A J Eberson described as “horrifying cir-cumstances” in his judgement. He had harsh words with regard to Sekelele in his judgement. “It is common cause that the plaintiff [Van der Laarse] was treated very cruelly and under horrifying circumstances from the moment of his arrest, which took place in the presence of acquaintances of his, by the second defendant and his sub-ordinates. He was detained in a hopelessly overcrowded con-tainer under filthy conditions. He was arrested by the second respondent [Sekelele] who acted as if he was power drunk and in a disgraceful display to all those who held what was going on. The Court can only hope that the matter somewhere along the line receives attention from some senior officer, for the conduct of the second defendant cannot be left unpunished and he is particularly unsuited to be an officer and to be in charge anywhere,” Judge Eberson said.

Van der Laarse was arrested without a warrant by Sekelele on Friday, 21 May, 2010 in the natural area at the border on a host of charges relating to the Fire Arms Control Act. Van der Laarse brought weapons into South Africa for a client. Most of the weapons were

licenced in South Africa, but some were only licensed in Zimbabwe. At no stage did Van der Laarse try and deceive the police about the weapons kept in a safe in his vehicle. He had all the necessary documentation for all the weapons, never left the neutral area and was in the process of sorting out the paper work. For three days prior to his arrest, he tried to convince the

police to hold the weapons in safe keeping, but they refused.

Van der Laarse was arrested at 16:40 on the said Friday by Sekelele, who blatantly refused to look at or acknowledge the weapons’ documentation. First Van der Laarse was detained at the Beit Bridge SAPS’s facility, from where he was moved to the Musina SAPS. Here he was detained in a 6m x 2m container, together with 23 other detainees in 40°C temperatures until Monday, 24 May, 2010 at 09:00, when he was finally released on bail of R3 000. During his detainment in the container, Van der Laarse was robbed of all his personal belongings by fellow detainees. All the detainees had to sleep like sardines packed next to each other, unable to even bend their knees and their heads and feet pushing up against the sides of the container.

Due to the overcrowded conditions, three detainees had to sleep sitting upright in the overflowing toilet in the con-tainer. Prior to this, when Van der Laarse was first detained at Beit Bridge, he had a bench pulled out from underneath him by police, who told him: “You don’t deserve to sit!”

Following his arrest, a court battle ensued. The matter was

provisionally withdrawn by the state prosecutor in Musina on 17 March 2011 and finally withdrawn by the senior pros-ecutor in Thohoyandou on 8 November 2011.

In the meantime (October 2010), Van der Laarse had al-ready issued a summons against the Minister of Police (first de-fendant) and Sekelele, wherein he claimed R200 000 in respect

of loss of liberty, R150 000 in re-spect of contumelia (a lack of polite-ness) and injury to his reputation, R58 310.05 in respect of legal costs to defend himself in court until the mat-ter was withdrawn on 17 March, and R5 851.96 for legal costs regarding his bail application.

In his judgement last week, Judge

Eberson finally awarded Van der Laarse general damages in the amount of R280 000, and R58 310.05 and R5 851.96 respectively in respect of his legal cost incurred, bringing the amount payable to R344 162.01, with interest thereon (about R160 000) at the rate of 15,5% per annum, calculated from 20 October 2010 (the date upon which the SAPS acknowledged receipt of Van der Laarse’s summons against the two defendants). Both the Minister of Police and Sekelele were also ordered to pay the cost of the action, jointly and severally, payment by the one absolving the other.

“The amounts claimed by the plaintiff are, for all intents and purposes, reasonable when compared to the awards made in other cases, especially when the gruesomeness of what the police officers did to the plain-tiff and the circumstances under which he was detained are taken into account,” Judge Eberson said.

In most cases, interest is only charged on the awarded amount for the day of judgement. In this case, interest was charged from the day the SAPS acknowl-edged receipt of the summons against them.

“This rarely happens. From this I deduct Judge Eberson’s clear dis-gust for the actions of Sekelele,” said Mr André Naude of Coxwell, Steyn, Vise & Naudé, who acted as Van der Laarse’s attorneys.

He was detained in a hopelessly overcrowded

container under filthy conditions. He was arrested

by the second respondent [Sekelele] who acted as if

he was power drunk and in a disgraceful display to all

those who held what was going on.

Driver Gloria aims for the world title

Man severely injured in brutal attackA 46-year-old man who was severely injured when two thugs allegedly attacked him at night, has warned the parents of the ‘young boys’ to teach their children a lesson or else they will cry.

“There was peace in our vil-lage, but each time these boys are released from jail, they just wreak havoc and cause confusion in the village,” said a worried father of two, Mr Rodney Masase. “One day they will do this (pointing to his stitched wound) to somebody else who will just whip out a gun and aim at their heads.”

Masase explained that he was crossing the main road to the Sidija Bakery side when two men stormed at him at around 22:00. One of them then hit him on the nose with a beer bottle.

“I grabbed the other one at the chest in the hope that he wouldn’t run away, and that people who might come to rescue me would also recognise the thug,” said

Masase, who had just returned from hospital for a check up on Sunday. “But he hit me on the head with a stone and I fell down.” The stone left a gaping wound on his head, and he bled profusely. Masase maintains that he recognised the two men, and that they also knew who he was because both of them were from Madombidzha village. “They are jailbirds; once they are out of pris-on, they do a crime and go back,” he said. He adds that the hooligan style of mugging unsuspecting people in Madombidzha seems to be far from over.

The spokesperson for the Tshilwavhusiku police, Const Munyadziwa Marindi, confirmed the incident and said that two suspects were arrested while busy digging a grave at the cem-etery, following the incident. The suspects were identified as Livhuwani Masia and Cry Luvha.

“They have since appeared in the Tshilwavhusiku Magistrate’s

Ms Gloria Ramaano of Ng-wemani ya Ha-Themeli si-lenced all the men in the prov-ince last weekend, when she was crowned the best truck driver in the province.

The Limpopo Provincial Driv-er of the Year Competition was held at Bela-Bela on Friday and Saturday and Ramaano, the only female driver, was competing against 59 men. She won a R5 000 cash price, a microwave oven, a gold medal and a three-day weekend break with her partner.

Although she has just won the top honours, Ramaano was already at work on Monday

where she was driving a truck that collects rubbish bins around Thohoyandou, where she has been working since December last year.

“When I participated, I was very nervous, but I was very happy and proud when I was an-nounced the best driver. This is a huge achievement for me. I think my achievement will also inspire other women to understand that women are as capable as men,” said the excited Ramaano, a family woman and the mother of two children. She said her poor background had forced her into this career. “I always wanted to be a traffic officer, but

when I passed matric at Guvhukuvhu Secondary School in 2000, I opted for a Code 10 driver’s licence as I did not have money to follow my dream.” She found work as a truck driver in Gauteng, but later joined Enos Bush Service as a bus driver. Last Decem-ber, she joined the Thulamela municipality. She also competed in the same competition in 2010 and 2011, where she finished in the second and third positions respectively. “This is good. It is God’s will, and I am very grate-ful to him. I am now aiming to win the national title, so that I can become a world champion,” says

Ramaano. She will rep-resent Limpopo during the national competition to be held in Cape Town next February. If she wins, she will repre-sent South Africa in Po-land next August. The spokesperson for the Thulamela municipali-ty, Nndwamato Tshiila, said that they were very proud of Ramaano’s achievement. “We are confident that she will still represent us well in the national and world competition.”Ms Gloria Ramaano.

Court, where Luvha pleaded guilty and was given 30 days in jail with an option of paying a R300 fine,” said Marindi.

However, Masia is yet to appear in court for trial after he had denied guilt. He reportedly maintained that he saw a thug attacking Masase and rushed to the crime scene to help, since he knew the victim. Vhamusanda Vho-Nt-sundeni Sinthumule condemned the act of violence. “A father and community builder was attacked on the Saturday night during which the communi-ty leadership and the police held a crime awareness campaign,” said Sinthumule. “This is not what we want to see in our village. We will still call a community gathering and talk about these ugly crimes,” he said.

Jubilation and ecstasy dominated the Makungwi Traditional Council's gathering in Nzhelele when Mr David Mureri handed over fencing equipment worth R20 000 on Sunday. The traditional council and the civic association spent the past couple of months seeking donations to fix the dilapidated fence around the local cemetery. According to Mr Mureri, CEO of the Reri’s Insurance Brokers, he felt that it was his responsibility to give back the little they are gaining from the community. “We take responsibility to help people in various areas and I have promised to help even here,” he said. “I stayed here long before I established myself, so I realised when these people approached me that our loved ones needed to rest in a secure and peaceful place,” he said. Photographed during the handing over ceremony are, from left, Mr David Luvhengo (chairperson of the traditional council), Mr Philemon Mureri, Vha-musanda Thomas Mudzunga, Mr David Mureri, and mr Lucas Mutsila (chairperson of SANCO).

A 57-year-old murder accused, Esrom Mabirimisa, appeared in the Dzanani Magistrate's Court last Tuesday in connection with a murder which allegedly took place in the night of 26 April near the Manyii Bridge in Nzhelele.

He is alleged to have shot and killed a Grade 12 pupil, Pfano Screamer Nare (18). According to the state, it is alleged that Mabirimisa found three young men walking along the

Manyii Bridge at around 20:00. He allegedly fi red two shots in the air and fi ve shots at the men. One of the men, who was later identifi ed as Nare, was hit by a bullet in the back of the head and died in hospital in the early hours of 29 April.

Mabirimisa, who is out on extended bail, is a former municipal supervi-sor, who now runs a taxi business in Gauteng. The case was postponed to 13 December.

Members of the South African police at the Beit Bridge border post smashed an ivory-smuggling syndicate last week, when they intercepted a cross-border bus carrying four elephant tusks to the value of R1,6 million.

They arrested two Zimbabwean bus drivers for smuggling the tusks through the border post.

Police spokesperson for Limpopo Province Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi said the two men, James Nyirenda (41) and Langton Saka (40), were arrested on Sunday evening at the border, following the interception of their bus, belonging to Citi-Liner Coaches. “Our offi cers conducted a search and they discovered four elephant tusks hidden in a secret compartment. All passengers in the bus disowned the contraband. We suspect these people have been oper-ating as an organised syndicate that smuggles ivory from Zimbabwe,” said Mulaudzi. Nyirenda and Saka appeared in the Musina Magistrates’ Court last Tuesday, facing charges

of smuggling and illegal possession of ivory. Nyirenda was sentenced to a fi ne R8 000 or four years in jail while charges against Saka were withdrawn, due to a lack of evidence linking him to the offence.

Of late, there has been a sharp a rise in the killings of elephants at Zimbabwe’s biggest game park, the Hwange National Park.\Poachers have killed 106 elephants by cyanide poisoning at the Hwange National Park between May and beginning of October. According to the Zim-babwe Parks and Wildlife Man-agement Authority, other animals that feed on meat and birds, such as vultures, have also succumbed to cyanide poisoning after preying on the carcasses.

The merciless killing of ele-phants and other wildlife species at the game park made international headlines. The Zimbabwean gov-ernment has since appointed an eight-member inter-ministerial task team to investigate the issue and take appropriate measures.

"Leave us alone," says Thovhele Vho-Nngwedzeni Alfred Mphaphuli.

"We are not part of the Malamulele task team," says Headman Simon Mphaphuli, chairperson of the Tshikonelo royal council.

“We are not part of the Malamulele demands”The community of the Thikonelo area are distancing themselves from the demands made by the Malamulele community and the surrounding areas for their own municipality.

Following a wildcat strike that left some shops burnt and looted, together with gov-ernment offi ces and cars damaged in Mal-amulele last week, Thovhele Nngwedzeni Alfred Mphaphuli and Headman Simon Mphaphuli, who is a traditional leader for Lombard under Tshikonelo, called a com-munity meeting for the thirteen villages under Tshikonelo where they discussed their position on the whole saga.

During the meeting, which was held on Saturday morning, under the watchful eye

of police offi cers from the Tshaulu police station, the community resolved that they do not want to be part of the struggle for a new municipality.

Headman Mphaphuli said that they had decided to have a meeting to discuss their stand after realizing “that we are being isolated by the Malamulele task team. The task team had never consulted us or our chief. They never invited us for their meetings. When they protest, they also come into our villages and disrupt school-ing and health services. They also blocked our roads. To us, this is not a good way to protest as we are destroying our children’s future,” said Mphaphuli.

He also added that the community of

Tshikonelo “does not want to be part of the new municipality. We are happy with Thulamela Municipality. There is a project of supplying water and our roads are being maintained. This is better when we com-pare with the service we were getting from the then Levubu-Xingwedzi Transitional Local Council,” he added.

He mentioned that they were not against the demand made by the Malamulele task team for their municipality. “Whether they succeed or not, we do not care. They must not involve us in their struggle,” he stated.

“I have had enough about the whole struggle for the new municipality. These people are using us. When this thing started, they claimed we were together.

But today they meet without involving me or my community. I want nothing to do with them. My people and I are happy with Thu-lamela and we must be left alone,” Thovhele Mphaphuli said angrily.

As part of the resolu-tions taken during the meeting, the community have agreed that bar lounges and bottle stores in the area must close at 17:00 every day.

Mr Ndivhuwo Rama-bulana (30) from Tshi-konelo, however, sup-ported the struggle for another municipality but stated that it must be done in a civilized manner. “They must not damage property as it will take us backward in terms of infrastructure development.”

Police intercept 38 illegal Ethiopians

“Municipality misuses R500 000 on trip”

Zimbabwean immigration au-thorities, in conjunction with the police, have intercepted 38 Ethiopians who intended to cross into South Africa illegally through the Limpopo River.

They were arrested on Monday (21 October) at about 10:00 at the Lutumba toll gate outside Beit Bridge. It followed the interception of the cross-border bus transporting them.

It has been established that the Ethiopians entered Zimbabwe from Mozambique through an illegal crossing point.

Beit Bridge police spokes-person Chief Supt Lawrence

Chinhengo said the group would appear in court soon on charges of entry by evasion. The suspects are aged between 20 and 30. Chinhengo said three bus crew members, Richmore Mundihwo (40), Misheck Demhe (33) and Roselyne Munhenga (29), were also arrested and had already appeared in court.

“We have had a number of such cases, where these illegal immigrants enter the country through Mutare and they would have been assisted by an organ-ised syndicate. We do not tol-erate criminal activities such as irregular migration and we have

intensified our investigations,” said Chinhengo.

In May 2011, Zimbabwe and South Africa immigration offi-cials met and agreed to deal de-cisively with illegal immigrants, mainly from countries in the Horn of Africa.

The resolution was made after a meeting held in Beit Bridge between security agents and immigration officials from both countries.

The barring of East Africans from entering South Africa also follows the recent enactment of the Refugee Amendment Bill by the South African Parliament.

The Democratic Alliance in Makhado is accusing the Makhado Municipality of misusing tax-payers’ money for their recent sports trip to Namibia.

The DA’s PR councillor in the Makhado Municipality, Itani Sikhwari, says that the DA re-cently discovered that the mu-nicipality had spent about R500 000 for a sports trip. More than 70 employees, including the municipal manager, Mr Isaac Mutshinyali, went to Namibia for a trip which lasted for nearly two weeks.

“How can a municipality with financial problems spend about R500 000 on a sports trip?” Sikh-wari asks. He adds that he doesn’t

understand the reason why poor communities that have no basic necessities such as water and electricity in some villages, have to suffer because of the Namibia sports trip.

“We demand a clear expla-nation on how the municipality benefits from a trip of this kind,” fumes Sikhwari.

Now the DA demands to know if the trip was budgeted for. “We have been informed that, on his return, Mutshinyali claimed money amounting to R15 000 because he had bought food for the people,” Sikhwari says. “How does it happen that the municipal manager uses his personal money for the municipality’s official trip?”

Sikhwari complains that the streets in town are riddled with gaping potholes, but the munic-ipality still continues to misuse municipal funds. “It would have been good if such amount of money was used to address some of the pressing issues of service delivery in this town or in the rural communities,” he suggests. “As the DA, we need answers to this trip saga.”

A media enquiry was emailed to the municipality’s spokesper-son, Louis Bobodi, to confirm if the municipality knew about the trip, and the cost of the trip. “I am sourcing for informed responses and will respond in detail once I have been provided with all information,” said Bobodi.

The DA’s PR councillors Reckson Madzivhandila and Itani Sikhwari stand next to the potholes in Kruger Street, near the train station.

Univen partners Zimbabwe universities

In court for robbery

The principal of the University of Venda (Uni-ven), Prof Peter Mbati has promised to partner Zimbabwean universities with books and learn-ing material.

Mbati, who was on a familiarization tour in Manicaland in Zimbabwe where he and his dele-gation from Limpopo toured the newly established Manicaland College of Applied Sciences (Man-icaland State University), said the Zimbabwean Government and leadership in Manicaland were “amazingly” insightful and consistent in taking the university to greater heights. He commended the remarkable progress as well as the province’s tireless efforts to make the university a centre of excellence.

“There will be areas of synergy. The university is an exciting development. I wish you well and we will follow the project closely. We belong together. The (Beit Bridge) border is just a geographical boundary,” he said.

Mbati was accompanied by, among other mem-bers of the delegation, the advisor to the university and director of international relations, Mr Cornelius Hagenmeier. The university has now enrolled 40 students since its inception 10 months ago who are studying for bachelors and honours degrees in mining- and engineering-related fields.

The university now has seven members of staff, including two permanent lecturers.

Three men from Beit Bridge who have allegedly been terrorising residents of the border town appeared in court last Monday.

Freeman Ndlovu (18), Brighton Makumire (18) and Elton Mutemi (24) of Dulibadzimu suburb ap-peared before Magistrate Gloria Takundwa, facing armed robbery charges. The case was postponed and they remain in custody.

The prosecutor, Mr Jabulani Mberesi, said it was alleged that, on the night of 25 September, the three men spotted a cross-border transport op-erator, who had parked his vehicle at Mashakada Shopping Centre. They were armed with knives and a machete and confronted the victim and robbed him of US$250 and R2 560 and then fled the scene, Mberesi said. The court was told that the trio later pounced on another motorist who had parked his vehicle near a local filling station and robbed him of US$100 and R300 and a wrist watch at knifepoint.

It is further alleged that on the same night, the trio robbed a local customs clearing agent of a cell phone.

The three men ran out of luck when Ndlovu was shot and injured in the left leg by detectives. He was positively identified by one of the victims while receiving treatment in the Beit Bridge District Hospital. A report was made to the police, leading to the arrest of Ndlovu. He then led the police to his accomplices and the police recovered machetes and knives.

Affairs, Mr Chris Mushohwe, said the university would play a critical role in the development of education in the country. He called on stakeholders to support the university materially and financially.

Uninen has also, in the past, donated Venda books to the Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) in Masvingo, following the introduction of Venda programmes at the institution a few years ago.

In an effort to encourage young people to preserve their cultural customs and norms, elders in Ha-Funyufunyu village in Nzhelele held a cultural day a fortnight ago (Saturday, 12 October). They spent the day exhibiting some of the Tshivenda traditional customs. In the picture, a group of elders are performing the tshigombela dance. The organiser, Mrs Angelinah Mushaphi, said the event was meant to educate young people to understand their roots. “We also invited the pastor and the traditional healer to educate our young ones,” she said.

When it comes to setting retirement goals, you need to consider the time period you have to build up a nest egg.

Start early, start small

If you are in your early 20’s, you can start by putting away small premiums into a retirement savings plan. Over time, your savings will build up into a meaningful amount. If you save regularly and invest in the appropriate investment portfolios, you will be in a strong position to reach your retirement goals.

Manage your investment plan over time

think of your investment according to how far you have to go until retirement. If you have a long time before you retire, you can invest in growth securities, such as equities and property, which have the potential for higher returns.

When you are close to retirement, your investment time period shortens and it is advisable to reduce your exposure to volatile assets. You would not want to expose your savings to possible negative returns closer to retirement. However, it is important that your savings is not invested in an overly conservative manner either.

South Africa and Zimbabwe have signed an agreement to revive some of the ailing firms in the neighbouring country.

Bulawayo is the most affected city, which was once the indus-trial hub of Zimbabwe. It has suffered massive de-industriali-sation in the past few years that has seen about 100 companies shutting down or relocating.

Speaking during the fifth In-vestment and Trade Initiative (ITI) meeting in Bulawayo last week, South Africa’s Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Mrs Elizabeth Thabethe, said that “Zimbabwe remains a strategic partner to South Africa because of the understanding of the po-tential that lies in this country, waiting to be unleashed. Zimba-bwe is a sleeping giant and it is the revival of Bulawayo which

Bishop David Phaswana of the Holy Evangelical Church official opened the new church building at Tshiozwi two weeks ago. During the ceremony, evangelist Edwin Mavhandu urged the congregation to pray for the leadership in government that they live up to their mandate. “Let us do something about crime. The criminals are our children and it is still us who could expose them, so that they face the might of the law. If we do that, we would see a decline in crime,” he said. Photographed at the church are, from left to right, evangelist Edwin Mavhandu, bishop David Phaswana, deputy bishop Elias Mulibana and elder Eva Phalali.

will awaken the great economy,” she added. She also mentioned that the South African gov-ernment has entered into an agreement with Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises and Co-op-erative Development to look at possibilities to help revive some of the distressed companies in Bulawayo. Thabethe said the process to re-vive some of the dis-tressed industries was already underway and this would serve as a catalyst to restore Bula-

wayo’s industrial hub status. She added that it had become impera-tive that the relationship between Bulawayo and Polokwane as well as Ethekwini be taken to another level to foster speedy economic development between the two countries. It was through partner-ship and collaborative initiatives that the objectives to develop the economy and create jobs in Zimbabwe would be realized, she said.

She also expressed the hope to attract more investors in the city and urge them to make use of the already available infrastructure, although it needs refurbishing.” According to her, South Africa’s continental trade and investment agenda was focused on support-ing Africa’s economy, adding that infrastructure development was vital to achieve the set ob-

jectives. “It is therefore critical that we utilize the advantage of our geographical proximity to focus on targeted high-growth markets, with the objective of creating investment and export opportunities for South African companies while simultaneously creating opportunities for Zimba-bwe companies to partner with their South African counterparts to advance the export opportu-nities of Zimbabwean product.”

Speaking at the same occasion, Zimbabwe’s Deputy Minister of Finance and Economic Develop-ment, Dr Samuel Undenge, said the two countries enjoyed strong bilateral economic relations.

“We (governments and busi-ness community) are all very keen to revive Bulawayo’s in-dustries and we share a common vision,” he said.

The SAPS at Musina have opened a case of arson after the house of Mr Collen Ndou was allegedly set alight on the night of 4 October.

According to the Musina police’s spokesperson, Lt Peter Mudau, Ndou was on his way from a stokvel party at around 23:10 when he met another man, who had a long-standing dispute with him. “The other man had been accusing the victim of taking his wife,” said Mudau. “But it is not clear at this stage that the suspect is the one who had burnt Ndou’s house.”

Mudau stated that Ndou claimed to have seen the suspect coming from the direction of his home, which made him suspect that he might know something about the fire which had consumed his one-room mud house.

In another matter, a 24-year-old woman was allegedly attacked and robbed of her mobile phone while on her way home on 5 October at about 19:40. Mudau said that Ms Suzan Mvula was mugged near the Thusanani Crèche at Harpemine. “The suspect will be arrested soon as the police know him,” Mudau said.

A former agricultural officer and Kutama tribal council chairperson, Mr Daniel Ramuedzisi (72), was buried at the Madodonga cemetery on Saturday.

He passed away on 15 October at the MediClinic in Polokwane after a long illness.

He was started his primary education at Kutama Primary and in 1963 he completed a certificate in agriculture from the Tompie Seleka Agricultural Training College.

During the funeral, the speakers described Ram-uedzisi as a loyal community servant. Vhamusanda Vho-Ntanganedzeni Kutama described him as a pioneer, a born leader and a man of vision. “He was real torch-bearer who never looked back under any circumstance,” one of the speakers said.

Mr Ramuedzisi was an advisor to the tribal coun-cil and, according to members of the council, he is a pillar that will be difficult to replace.

He was actively involved in the development of local football from the early seventies and a found-er-member of Madodonga Limpopo Professionals.

The late Daniel Ramuedzisi.

Calendar 2014

Readers can submit best local photosIt is once again time for the Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror’s very popular calen-dar photo competition.

The region’s photographers will have until 15 November to submit their entries. This year’s prize money totals R8 400, with 12 winning pictures to be chosen for each of the year’s months. Winning entries will be published in an A2-format 2014 calendar, which will be used by the Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror for marketing purposes. The calendars will also be sold to the public at a minimal fee.

Only high-resolution pho-tos of subjects unique to the Soutpansberg and surrounding areas will be considered for the competition. Wildlife pho-tos are welcome, although the newspaper group would like to see more entries depicting the region’s cultural heritage, its people and landscape. The competition is limited to five entries per photographer, which should preferably be submitted in digital format. Cellphone or postcard-size photos will not be considered for the competition.

All entries must clearly in-dicate who the photographer

is, their contact details, where and when the photo was taken and what camera was used. Al-though technical aspects such as the quality and sharpness of the photo will be taken into account, the photo should, however, only make for a nice picture. Each of the 12 winning photographs will be bought from the photographer at a price of R700 per photo. Entries can be handed in at the office of the Zoutpansberger at 16B Joubert Street, Louis Trichardt. For more information, phone Andries van Zyl at Tel 082 603 2419, 015 516 4997 or write to [email protected]

Mayor Matibe promises anew house for needy family

Royal Gardens Festival creates R30 000 bonus for Mutoti

The executive mayor of Vhem-be, Cllr Tshitereke Matibe, has promised a house to Mr Thomas Maluta, one of the needy families at Madimbo village.

Mathibe recently visited Maluta and his family shortly before he interacted with the community dur-ing an imbizo he had at Madimbo Primary School. Maluta is a farm worker and is currently sharing two mud houses with his wife and six children. One of the mud houses that he is using as a main bedroom does not have proper roofing and one can see the sky from inside the house.

After assessing the situation, Matibe told the family that his sup-porting staff would get funding from local businesses to fund the building of a four-roomed house, which will also include three bedrooms and a kitchen.

In his response, Maluta said he was happy about the pledge. “I am very happy that the executive mayor is providing an answer to my prayers. For many years I was pray-ing that my situation will change, with no answer. Today Mr Mathibe has come to my rescue,” said a very excited Maluta.

The Ha-Mutoti community in the Mphaphuli area outside Thohoyandou benefited from the Royal Gardens Fes-tival held earlier last month. The Spring Festival, which was made possible by Phala-Phala FM in association with Nandoni Royal Gardens, donated R30 000 of the profits to the Mutoti Primary School.

The Mutoti Primary School, which caters for pupils from Grade 1 to Grade 7, received the money from the stakeholders on Saturday at Ha-Mutoti village. Pupils, members of the school governing body (SGB) and the chief of the village, Mr Gilbert Masikwa, thanked the stakehold-ers partnership for investing in education.

Chief Gilbert Masikwa commended the festival’s organisers for putting children’s

education at the core of their festival. He said it was an intelligent idea to donate the money to children rather than elders. He jokingly said that if the money were given to the entire community, people would have probably misused it. “This money is going to build the future of our children. I am so excited and I really thank the stakeholders who decided to invest it in our children’s education,” he said.

Phala-Phala FM’s marketing manager, Mrs Rudzani Mulaudzi, thanked the com-munity for supporting and accepting them to host the festival in their area. She said the station established the need to invest in children’s education. “Our station values the importance of education. We chose the school because those children are the men and women of tomorrow,” she said.

The school’s principal, Mrs Rembu-luwani Marole, said the donation came at the right time when the school was in dire need of another teacher. The school has only four teachers. She added that the money will be used to pay the volunteering teacher for a period of six months and they will also use the money do develop the children’s playground.

“We are not saying the government has turned a blind eye to us, but this money will help to pay our volunteering teacher. We tried to get support but received only empty promises,” she said. She added there was a challenge of developing children not only educationally but also physically. “We will build the playground for children to develop them educationally and physically,” she said.

Operations halted at Vele CollieryCoal of Africa Limited (CoAL) is halting mining activities at their Vele colliery, north of the Soutpansberg.

This is to enable CoAL to prepare for their pre-approved R220 million expansion project at the mine, the company an-nounced on Tuesday. “A collaborative and inclusive engagement process with the con-tractor companies op-erating at the mine has been concluded, with 49 people retained,” it said in a statement.

Another 138 em-ployees, said CoAL, had been redeployed to other operations owned by them, while 155 employees were retrenched.

CoAL had already announced the approval of the new budget dur-ing August. The Vele colliery, which is close to the Mapungubwe World Heritage Site, was severely affected by the January floods this year. The new credit will, however, enable Vele to produce a suffi -cient future cash fl ow to support the company’s overheads.

“The approval fol-lows the re-evaluation and confi rmation of the quality of coal at Vele and the conclusion of a

review of the current operations,” said CoAL.

“As part of that process and in order for the colliery to reduce the current cash losses incurred, the colliery will cease production during October 2013 in order to prepare for the construction

phase of the announced expan-sion,” explained CoAL.

Fundraising for the planned expansion is expected to be completed by the end of March next year, which means that Vele would be fully operational again by the end of 2015.

Community to provide police with infoThe SAPS at Tshilwavhusiku interacted with the communi-ty of Madombidzha as part of the station’s crime-awareness campaign in the policing area. The event was held at the Assemblies of God grounds last Sunday.

Makhado SAPS cluster’s commander Brig Alex Seopa requested members of the com-munity to provide the police with information regarding the crimes committed in the area. “We can’t allow a situation where our elderly are mugged and raped, houses broken into and school children murdered, and we keep quiet about it,” Seopa said.

Junior deputy provincial commissioner of the police

Charme Lishivha addressed the youth and parents on the burning issue of teenage preg-nancies. “A child is a gift from God, but what happens when the child bears the notion of having a child and puts that notion into action?” she asked rhetorically.

She then slammed parents for failing to communicate with and leading children in the right way. “Parents, where were you when your child was having sex in your own house?” she contin-ued. “Aborting a life is murder.”

D/Const Mokgadi Mamo-khwane of the Child Protection, Family Violence and Sexual Offences Unit in Makhado informed the community about the services the unit offers to victims of crime before con-

demning these acts of crime. “We work with minors who have been mercilessly raped by people who should have been protecting them against the evils of this world,” she spoke.

Mamokhwane reffered to the case where an 85-year-old lady was attacked and raped while returning from a church service in Madombidzha village. “Who-ever did that urgly thing has no respect even for himself,” she condemned.

Chief Rudzani Sinthumule decried the high rate of crime in the Sinthumule area. “We need to ask God to always help the police in their investigations of the crimes, so that the problem of crime could be solved,” said Sinthumule.

Black Leopards continued to drop points when they were beaten 0-1 by Blackburn Rov-ers at the Seshego Stadium on Friday.

The score was not a true re-flection of the match as the home side missed countless chances. Leopards had their first taste of bad luck in the 10th minute,

when David Zulu shot into the opposing keeper's hands from the penalty area. Rovers realised that it would be difficult to find the net if they continued volleying from behind and then started to cool the ball down in the middle of the park. They were rewarded when Mxolisi Macuphu beat the defence of Leopards and scored.

The second half started at a snail's pace, with both teams struggling to penetrate each other’s defence. Toney Steven of Rovers gained momentum as the game pro-gressed. In the 76th minute, the lethal striker of Leopards, Brian Amidu, missed a fortune. He shot wide with the Rovers keeper well beaten.

Black Leopards drop more points

Tshiombo Try Again reach for the crownAfter failing to maintain the form they commanded in their first season, Tshiombo Try Again seem to have regained their winning formula this season.

After playing eight games in their Super League, Try Again are sitting comfortably in second position with 18 points. They are tied with log leaders Matan-gari High Aims, their next-door neighbours, who are leading them only due to the goal difference.

In their eight matches, Try Again lost once and drew once, while they have won six match-es. They are especially proud of their victory over neighbours Tshiombo Secretes, a team that produced Chiefs defender and Bafana Bafana star Mulomowan-dau Mathoho. Tendani Neluheni is the team’s leading goal scorer with seven goals.

The team is co-owned and run by a woman, Ms Maria Netshishive. Her late husband, Tshifhiwa, founded the team in 2007 as a development project for U/12 boys. They only affiliated to the league in the 2011/12 sea-son, and finished third that year. Things turned bad last season, when they finished in the 11th position on the log.

Maria is adamant that they will

win their stream this season. The captain, Dakalo Mudau, said that their success came from the good leadership of their manager. “She is like a mother to us. When we look at the commitment she gives to the team, we are forced to work extra hard,” he says. “Besides fol-lowing my late husband’s dream of creating a developmental team that must produce national and interna-tional stars, I am also happy that this team is taking our children from the streets as it keeps them busy , " s ays Maria.

M a r i a i s a s s i s t e d b y Awelani Rat-s h i v h a d e l o . T h e i r n e x t match will be against Mak-warani Freli-mo Boys on 30 November. The break is due to the final examinations that are being written all over the country.

The unemployed Maria is struggling to run the team without a sponsor. “It is very difficult to run this team without financing. We do not have basic things like soccer boots and soccer balls. We only rely of hand-outs from some parents of the players. Sometimes we also struggle to pay transport to soccer matches,” she said.

“TT” Katinga to train with SundownsThe fine performances of Le-sedi “TT” Katinga of Benny’s Care during the national finals of the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Competition in Dur-ban last month, are paying excellent dividends for the young player.

The attacking midfielder re-cently received an invitation

to attend a camp of Mamelodi Sundowns. It will take place at the end of November at Chloorkop in Midrand. Not only will Katinga get the opportunity to be trained by some of the best soccer development coaches in South Africa, but he will also play against Mamelodi Sun-downs’ first team.

At the end of the camp, a few players will be invit-ed to join the S u n d o w n s development academy, and Katinga is hop-ing that he will be one of them.

K a t i n g a h a i l s f r o m Musina, where he lives with his mother and half-brother. Soccer is his focus and the career path he would like to follow. “I have not thought beyond soccer and Benny’s S p o r t s h a s been the right school for me,

being the only sports school in Limpopo,” he said.

He was groomed in soccer from an early age by his cousin, the late Lesley Manyathela. “He was my hero and role model and gave me advice on how to be a better player. I would sit and watch him on TV with so much pride. He also did so much to promote our small town of Musina, and I would like to continue to fly the town’s flag, even have my own team one day aimed at helping build future stars,” he said.

He joined Musina United FC in 2010 and was spotted by Ben-ny’s coach, Mr Justice Matloga, at a tournament and invited to join the school. “I joined them in 2011 and have never looked back,” he said.

The young footballer is not new to Chloorkop. “I was invit-ed to attend trials for Sundowns in 2011 and 2012, but was not selected into the academy. This year I have been invited to attend a camp and I am hoping that it will be a case of third time lucky. I just have to work hard and focus on my training. I think that my soccer career has a better chance in Gauteng than in Limpopo, as there are more opportunities and the facilities are better,” he said.

Draw closer by caring

Plain TruthThe quest for morality

When Ringo sang Sondela, the lyrics were meant to bring two lovers together. Many couples are drawn apart and away from each, including divorce, because they do not understand that one of the dynamics of love is caring.

When you say to somebody, '‘I love you'’, in essence you are also saying "I care about you". This is one ingredient of love through which you promise to keep the other one happy at all times. When you married, you promised to do things that would enhance the quality and enjoyment of each other’s lives, just as you were so passionate about it during the courting stage.

When you care about someone, you will make efforts to ensure that he or she is taken good care of emotionally, psychologically and physically. There are many people who claim to love and care about their partners whilst in essence they live to their promise. Think of those who verbally (and by implication also emotionally and psychological-ly) abuse their partners. There are those who justify swearing at their partners, calling them names and so on, by claiming that they are doing it out of love. If you care about the other, you cannot anger them or get angry with them because love does everything possible to be patient and not to get easily angered. It goes to a point of not even trying to keep record of the other person’s wrongdoings.

Being kind to the other demon-strates your love for the other and it always brings the best out of the other. Caring love is pa-tient with someone in ways that make them feel loved. In this way, their emotional and psychological well-being is taken good care of,

thereby ensuring that the married couple draw closer to each other day by day. When care is not there, you risk drifting apart day by day. Everyone has a craving to be taken good care of and when this aspect is not met, we normally tend to attach ourselves to other things (cars, for instance) and other people (other men and women who become our spare wheels or handbags) in an effort to satisfy that need. When this emotional need is not catered for in your marriage, you become angry, unhappy and frustrated, to a point of cheating and sometimes running away from your marriage.

The unfortunate part is when the caring element affects your sex life. There are those people who starve their partners sexually, either as a way of punishing them for the wrong they have done or either as a way of demonstrating that change is needed in the bedroom, to a point of starting to explore new ways to keep each other sexually happy and fulfilled.

If you care for each other, you will always make it a point that you meet each other’s needs sexually, because when you said "I love you", you were also saying "I care enough about you that I will always satisfy your physical needs". This also speaks to my fellow compatriots, South African men, who have the tendency of rushing things – in-cluding sexual encounters with their spouses. You need to slow down, enjoy the foreplay, and also enjoy taking your wife to the level of reaching orgasm. Tell your spouses that you love and care about them every day. - Prof Derrick Mashau, Department of Christian Spiritual-ity, Church History and Missiology, UNISA. ([email protected].)

No activity for MMK league teamsTeams affiliated to the MMK Funeral Services Soccer League will be out of action for the next five weeks. This was announced during the clubs' general meeting which was held at the Thohoyandou library last Saturday.

The decision to suspend the league matches is to allow the players to prepare for the end-of-year examinations.

According to the administra-tive officer of the league, Mr Mulalo Mafenya, the league matches will resume over the weekend of 30 November and 1 December. Mafenya indicated that the suspension of the league activities would not affect the Nedbank Cup programme. He said that teams currently leading their respective streams will play their Nedbank Cup matches mid next month in order to determine the regional champions. The regional champions will play against the other regional winners to determine the team that will represent the province in the last

32 stage of the competition.During Saturday’s meeting,

an audited financial statement of the association was presented to the clubs.

The p r e s -entation of the audited finan-cial statement was in l ine with the re-quest made by the clubs dur-ing a previous meeting, which was held at the Avkhom Ho-tel two months ago.

According to the budget allocation for the 2013/14 soccer season, R692 000 will be distributed to the teams in the form of prizes at the end of the sea-

son. R30 000 has been set aside for the development of women's football, while the same amount will be utilized towards youth development programmes.

Mr Mulalo Mafenya.

Guidance for grade 7’s of EltivillasGrade 7 pupils of El-tivillas Primary re-ceived career guidance from different experts during a career day at the school last Friday.

Mr Walter Matamela, a teacher at the school, said that the day was aimed at providing pu-pils with the best career information as well as the best study methods, so that they can suc-ceed in life. He men-tioned that studying is a process that requires dedication, concentra-tion and effective time management.

“ G i v e y o u r s e l f enough time to study because you will nev-er succeed if you start studying only during examination time. We expect a lot from you. Stop wasting time and giving excuses and start making a positive im-pact to improve South Africa. If we want a better life for all, work-ing together we can do more,” he added.

A loca l med ica l practitioner, Dr Mulalo Mphephu, outlined dif-ferent careers in health, education, rural devel-opment and safety and security.

He encouraged the pupils to pursue educa-tion more than anything, so they can be better people in future.

He advised the pupils to get successful people as role models who can encourage them to work hard to achieve those goals.

“Having a role model in life usually helps a person to be able to draw a picture of where he or she wants to be in the future,” Mphephu added.

Phadziri donates R174 000 to education The Phadziri Bus company do-nated another R174 000 to the education of pupils in the Sin-thumule/Kutama area during a ceremony at Madombidzha last Thursday.

The company first donated R245 000 to finance winter class-es and later donated R270 000 to the autumn classes of the Sin-thumule/Kutama enrichment pro-ject. The latest donation of R174 000 will finance the stationery and the payment of the teachers

during the spring classes.Mr Simeon Mufamadi of

Phadziri said the donation would also help to instil a spirit of coop-eration between businesspeople and education.

“Businesspeople and educators need to develop a good working relationship to restore moral regeneration for the benefit of our children. Teachers need our cooperation as a company to build a strong nation and I urge other companies to support the

development of education in their respective villages,” he added

Mr Charles Lishivha of the Sinthumule/Kutama enrichment project was on cloud nine after receiving the donation.

“This is one of the most mem-orable days in the history of education,” he said. According to him, an educated and independ-ent nation always achieves its goal, as it will always be easier to work together and to plan for their future.

Communities should be educated about environment issues

Municipal i t ies in the Vhembe district of the

Limpopo Province have a statutory obligation to have Intergrated Development Plans (IDPs). These plans encompass matters relating to all the de-velopments of the municipal areas, and seek to promote economic development and the protection of the environment.

On that note, I must concede that all the munic-ipalities in the district have done exceptionally well in coming up with well-crafted IDPs that cover a broad range of societal issues. Indeed, much has been done in trying to attain the objectives set in these IDPs.

Evidently, RDP houses and other public utilities have been built, which is an indication of how successful these plans are. However, it must be mentioned with ap-proval that very little energy and few resources have been channelled into solving the environmental problems that

the district is facing, includ-ing the potential ones.

All four Vhembe dis-trict’s municipalities’ IDPs explicitly acknowledge the prevalence of various environmental challenges in their specific municipal areas. However, measures to curb the identified environmental problems are particularly lacking or insuffient. Perhaps this is a true reflection of a lack of commitment towards environmental issues by those in positions of authority in the Vhembe district.

This sentiment was affirmed by the Makhado Municipality’s 2012/13 – 2016/17 IDP draft doc-ument, which reveals two vital points. Firstly, that the “Integrated environmental ed-ucation programmes are not in place, and as such young people and communities are ignorant of the fundamental environmental principles such as water saving and pollution management”. Secondly, “ a lack of commitment by

government departments and local authorities to implement environmental legislation, particularly the new Environ-mental Management Policy contributes to the problem”.

From the above-mentioned, it is quite evident that the insuffient knowledge of the IDPs by ordinary residents of the Vhembe district has often advocated for the blaming of the municipal-ities without knowing that most of these municipalities have inherited this lack of capacity in dealing with the environmental issues from the top level of governance. This is not a smear campaign or a cover up story line for the concerned authorities, but an attempt to encourage people to use a holistic approach when assessing the root of the municipality’s ineffiencies in dealing with environmental problems in the district.

However, an opportunity exists for private businesses to try to engage the youth, communities and tribal

authorities on environmental issues through the sponsoring of environmental initiatives such as recycling and the use of renewable energy, thus educating them about the importance of taking care of their environment. Similar-ly, institutions for higher learning in the district or province should partner with the municipalities in deliver-ing environmental awareness initiatives in communities in the Vhembe district.

I believe that by now we are aware of the challenges that the municipalities are facing in their attempts to deal with the prevailing envi-ronmental challenges, so let’s all contribute in the creation of a safer and healthy envi-ronment in our district.

and South African National Antarctic Programme’s Deputy Team Leader at

Marion Island

Story: Black Leopards are likely to play their next home league match at the

Makhuvha Stadium.

Comment: Why not go back to the so-called slaughter house, aka Tshi-

fulanani? But anyway, as long as you go and start winning games it’s fine. For the first time in years I see Leopards playing Spanish football. Unfortunately you guys are not scoring. - Fhulu Mueda

Story: The on-going chaos in Malam-ulele is far from over. This follows

after more demands by residents of the area for the establishment of their own municipality.

Comment: The tribalism displayed by these people is very barbar-

ic and unfortunate. This rudimentary comparison of Malamulele town and Thohoyandou is completely misinformed. The Greater Thohoyandou town area (Shayandima, Thohoyandou, Sibasa, Makwarela) on its own (without Mal-amulele) is the biggest urban area in the whole of Limpopo even bigger than Polokwane in terms of population density. (This is per Stats SA.) The reason why Thohoyandou needed a double storey taxi rank is because there simply is no space available in the Thohoyandou CBD. The same applies to Sibasa, whereas Mala-mulele has ample vacant and arid land. You can’t blame Vendas for the economic boom in Thohoyandou as it is not the Thu-lamela municipality behind this, it’s the economic activity, the buying power (most Vendas still make money out of Venda not in the municipality) and the population density of the area that demands that kind of infrastructure. People of Malamulele must just accept that Thohoyandou will continue to grow with or without them just as it did during apartheid times and if they get an own municipality for the wrong reasons it will fail just like many in the country and they will be forced to get basic services and drive to do shopping in Thohoyandou as it is has been since. – Tshifhiwa

Brigadier Mulaudzi is telling the Mala-mulele people that, in order for them

to gather they need the municipality’s permission? I doubt if the Municipality will grant that permit since this anger is directed at them. People must stop

undermining Vatsonga people because chaos like this is bound to happen. To hell with double story taxi ranks and to hell with unnecessary taxi ranks and the decorations at Thohoyandou’s entrance that make no sense while people need basic services like main roads and water. Forward Greater Malamulele Municipal-ity Forward! - Bruno Chuma

Story: The parents of a 19-month-old baby are still aggrieved after baby

Mulalo Prince Mulaudzi died after nurses at the Khakhu clinic refused to help him last Thursday.

Comment: We don’t care about the investigation (of the Department of

Health), we want reasons and we want compensation. Your ANC investigation is late. Baby Malaudzi is gone. Your department should have ensured that the clinic’s staff behaved professionally while the baby was alive. I know the father and the mother very well. I am disgusted by the behaviour of this clinic. As a white African I appeal for support to the Ma-laudzi family. These are people similar to ourselves who do not have access to private medical care. It is unjust that medical care is refused, constitutionally. We as South Africans have the right to life and to medical care. I will fight tooth and nail for Mumsy and Alex to be compen-sated for this injustice. Although money will not bring Baby Prince back, we need to stand up against this negligence. This child had a future - a future destroyed by Government’s disinterest and private gains. It is time for us as a Nation to say no more. –Marcus

Delayed tournament next weekend

All the weekend results at a glance

The much-awaited developmental boxing tour-nament will finally take place next Sunday.

According to the president of amateur boxing in Limpopo, Mr Eric Baloyi, the tournament will involve 20 boxers in Vhembe and will take place at a venue to be confirmed. He added that the tournament had originally been organised for 14 October in Musina. Other sporting codes competed, but due to the fact that there was no boxing ring, the tournament was postponed.

The tournament was then postponed to 19 Octo-ber in Malamulele, but was postponed again, due to the unrest situation.

According to Mr Baloyi, father of well-known boxer Cassius Baloyi, during the tournament 10 boxers will be selected to represent the Vhembe district during the provincial tournament that will take place later this year.

Baloyi said he would inform the relevant stake-holders about the venue as soon as it was confirmed.

After a break of two weeks, it was business as usual for the teams which are affiliated to the National First Division last weekend.

The match between Jomo Cosmos and African Warriors, which was scheduled for Sunday at the Makhulong Stadium in Thembisa, was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. According to the state-ment from the Premier Soccer League, heavy rain fell in the area shortly before kickoff.

Baroka FC proved that they really mean it when they say they want to take part in the promotional play-offs at the end of the season when they beat FC Cape Town 2-0 at the Parow Park Stadium. Four of the six players for Baroka who were injured when the team was involved in a bus accident four weeks ago, were in the starting line-up on Sunday. Baroka have moved four steps up on the log, fol-lowing the impressive result. They are now lying in the seventh spot.

Santos came back from a 0-2 half-time deficit to hold United FC to a 2-2 draw in a fast-flowing game at the Moruleng Stadium in Rustenburg. Maluti FET College and Vasco da Gama played to a goalless draw, but Black Leopards have every reason to panic. They enjoyed ball possession throughout their game against Blackburn Rovers at the Seshego Stadium, but at the end Rovers scored a silly goal to snatch a 1-0 victory.

Milano United continued to pave their way up by beating Witbank Spurs 2-0 at the Wynberg Military Stadium in Cape Town. Sivutsa Stars managed to deposit full points into their account. They beat Thanda Royal Zulu 1-0 at the Kabokweni Stadium in Nelspruit. Sivutsa Stars moved to the fifth posi-tion on the log, following the victory.

Chippa United’s 2-0 victory over Roses United was not a true reflection of the game. Roses United were by far the better side when it came to ball possession, but their strikers were unlucky.

Faith Makubele received the top trophy for culture at the prestige prize-giving ceremony of Louis Trichardt High School on 10 October.

Diwali, the Festival of Lights, will be celebrated by the local as well as the international Hin-du community on 3 November this year.

During the festive period, fire-works will be discharged at the

homes of members of the local Hindu community.

The Festival of Lights signifies the return of Ram to his kingdom, after fourteen years of banish-ment to the forest. According to the Louis Trichardt Hindu Seva

Samaj, the local Hindu commu-nity will discharge fireworks from 26 October to 7 November between the hours of 18:00 and 23:00. They will also celebrate the dawning of a New Year 2070 on 4 November 2013

Firework warning for Diwali festivities

Vho-Mary Mbedzi buys her lunch meal at Merve´s Vuk´uzenzele Meals in Makhado.

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho

“I put my soul in every pack-et” - Merve When the 54-year-old father of four children, Merve Thonga, lost his job at a grocery chain store in 2004, he was devastated. For more than five years he was one of millions of unemployed people and it was only in 2010 that his fortunes started changing.

Merve, as he is affectionately known at the Shoprite taxi rank in Makhado, remembers how he borrowed R350 from his cousin to start his Vuk’uzenzele Meals. “I bought a bucket of mango atchar, loaves of bread, potatoes and russians to make sphahlo,” he explains. “I had an old gas cylinder and a pan at home, and

I used those things to stir-fry potatoes and russians.”

Hunger in the home, and the need to support his children and wife, had forced him out of Tshiozwi village to come and seek greener pastures in Makhado. “When I couldn’t find a job, I started my Vuk’uzenzele Meals,” he explains. “It was dif-ficult during my first days here in the taxi rank, because people didn’t know that there was someone like me who prepared such a tasty menu.”

Vho-Mary Mbedzi, a mother who sells snacks and drinks at the taxi rank, is one of many regular customers at Vuk’uzen-zele Meals. “Merve’s sphahlo is

delicious,” she marvels.Merve speaks about the secret

behind his tasty food. “I put a bit of my soul into every packet of sphahlo to make the meal soulful,” he says.

His biggest challenge is the rainy season. “When it rains, it ruins my business, because I cannot do business,” he says while pointing at his exposed stall structure.

Two of his four children are still at school and he pays for their full tuition from the little that he is able to raise from his small business. “There’s no grave of hunger in this country; just rise up and do your bit to beautify your life,” he advises.

“I put my soul in every packet” - Merve

Pull Together and Dynamos in a drawMailaskop Pull Together held Tshiozwi Dynamos to 1-all draw in their MMK Insurance

league match played at Tshiozwi on Sunday.

Pull Together did not lose their fighting spirit, although two of their key players, Christopher Manyatsha and Melvin Mabatha, were cau-tioned with yellow cards in the 14th and 16th minute respectively. The wheel of fortune turned against Pull Together in the 20th minute. Their defender, Norman Mu-dau, failed to stop the ball, and Mashudu Nen-govhela scored easily.

The technical staff for the visiting team could not forgive him for the blunder he had commit-ted and he gave way to Mashudu Malema. The equaliser of Pull Togeth-er was scored by Melvin Tshifularo from a free kick. After the goal, Pull Together regrouped and started to dictate terms.

The Mailaskop boys were led by their mid-field linkman, Melvin Mabatha. They raided the Dynamos’ danger area continuously, but Lady Luck was not on their side.

They tried to walk the ball into the net, but the Dynamos defence was rock solid.

In the second half, the home team introduced George Phungo and Velaphi Mphaphuli for Rambuda Maphaha and Matodzi Maruli respec-tively.

Their introduction did not change the com-plexion of the match and the game finished without any more ex-citement.

Black Leopards must win their match against Vasco da Gama if they are serious about moving out of the relegation quagmire.

They will battle for points at the Parow Park

Stadium tomorrow afternoon. The local team lost a home match against Blackburn Rovers at the Seshego Stadium last Saturday.

The Thohoyandou outfit is lying in the third-last position on the log and a win against Vasco da Gama will boost the team’s morale for future matches. Leopards' chairman, Mr David Thidiela, remains positive that his charges will prove all the critics wrong tomorrow. Leopards are still to win a league match this season after six outings. They lost two and shared the spoils on four occasions.

Thanda Royal Zulu will host Maluti FET College at the Umhlathuze Sports Complex in Richards Bay. It will be time for Royal Zulu to exact revenge for the defeat they suffered at the hands of Sivutsa Stars last weekend. Jomo Cosmos will rub shoul-ders with Baroka FC. Baroka are in a winning mode after beating FC Cape Town 2-0 last weekend. Just like Black Leopards, Jomo Cosmos are still to win a league match this season.

Sivutsa Stars will host Chippa United at the Kabokweni Stadium and the match between Black-burn Rovers and United FC will be staged at the Umthatha Stadium in the Eastern Cape. The Cape Town derby between Santos and Milano United will be staged at the Athlone Stadium.

In the two matches that will be played on Sunday, Witbank Spurs will take on FC Cape Town and African Warriors and Roses United will meet at the Charles Mopedi Stadium.

Guvhungwa Young Fighters managed to collect the max-imum points when they beat Tshiphuseni All Stars 1-0 in their MMK Funeral Services match at the Tshiphuseni Munwai Primary School grounds on Sunday.

The match started at a slow

pace, with Young Fighters using slow buildups to launch their attacks. Stars' slender striker, Fhatuwani Mulaudzi, wasted a great chance to grab the lead in theeighth minute, when he tried to control the ball instead of picking the spot.

This was after he received

a terrific cross from Shonisani Mavhambe.

Stars' coach was forced to make an early substitute in the 18th minute.

He introduced Khumbelo Ligege and sacrificed Rof-hiwa Matidza. Matidza was looking weary from the onset.

Azwihangwisi Mu-tavhatsindi of Young Fighters was unlucky not to break the ice in the 24th minute, but his shot from inside the penalty box was saved by keeper Vhulenda Matshinyatsimbi.

Stars effected another change to their starting lineup towards the end of the first half. They re-placed Vusani Magoro with Rabelani Muo-beleni. Azwihangwisi Mutavhatsindi wasted another clear-cut scor-ing chance on the stroke of half time when he opted to control the ball instead of taking a shot at goal.

Martin Mathebula of Stars missed a glorious chance three minutes into the last half. At that stage, Fighters’ keeper, Corhan Muk-wevho, was already beaten. The goal which separated the boys from men came in the 67th minute. Ndiambani Mphakwe used his left foot to hook the ball into the net.

Nkateko Nyari of All Stars went into the ref-eree’s book for pulling Dalton Managa's jersey at the edge of the penal-ty box. Young Fighters frustrated the opponents by playing long balls from behind in the last 15 minutes of the game. The strategy worked for them as they managed to defend their 1-0 lead until the referee, Mr Phineas Rambau, blew the final whistle.

After losing 0-1 to Rockers FC at the Makwarela Stadium two weeks ago, Univen FC contin-ued to drop league points last Saturday. They were held to a 1-1 draw with Thohoyandou

Development in their MMK Funeral Services match at the University of Venda open ground.

Univen were lucky not to con-cede an avalanche of goals. The

visitors were by far the bet-ter side when it came to pos-session of the ball. Matodzi Tshirangwana was a thorn in the flesh of the Univen de-fence. He was everywhere , collecting balls from behind and assisting the midfield-ers at the same time by dis-tributing some d a n g e r o u s passes to the goal poachers.

The pressure continued to mount against the defenders of Univen and it was not sur-prising to see them concede three corner kicks in quick

succession. The scoreboard was still blank at half time, despite numerous attempts by the strikers of Development.

Thohoyandou Development took the lead in the 54th minute. Their slender striker, Given Mu-dau, beat the offside trap and ran straight to the keeper. As if they were spectators, the defenders of Univen accompanied him until he unleashed a ground cutter from close range.

Univen suffered a heavy blow when their number one goalkeep-er, Eugene Mbedzi, sustained a knee injury in the 65th minute. Mulalo Ragadza of Development was reprimanded with a card for wasting time and Hector Dama of Development was booked after a heated argument with Referee Kenneth Makondo.

Univen found the equalizer in the 69th minute. Madilonga Mukwevho scored with a header after a corner kick by Mutali Mulaudzi.

The coach of Univen, Mr Mashudu “Cool io” Ndou, watched the last 20 minutes of the game from outside the fence. He was given his marching orders for using abusive words towards the first assistant referee. Ofhani Nelukalo of Univen was also booked for obstruction late in the game.

In their MMK Funeral Services match at the University of Venda open ground on Saturday, Tshakhuma RO United came back from a 0-1 deficit and beat Shayandima Silver Stars 2-1.

It was difficult for the players to control the ball as the pitch was slippery, due

to the rain which fell in the area shortly before the starting time.

United were the first to knock on their opponents’ door. Their right flank, Asivhanzhi Muthubi, received a neat pass from Takalani Ratshilima just outside the penalty area. Muthubi unleashed a pow-

erful volley from inside the box and the Stars’ keeper, Rudzani Hlungwane, braved the shot and fisted the ball away for a corner kick.

That was a wakeup call to the players of Silver Stars. They started to play at-tacking football instead of packing themselves at the back. Silver Stars were the first to find the net. They were awarded a corner kick in the 24th minute.

Fhatuwani Mathivha gave the ball the final touch with a brilliant header. United regrouped from behind and created more dangerous moves from the centre of the pitch.

It took them 35 minutes to retaliate. Their overlapping

defender, Khathutshelo Mukomafhedzi, scored from the free kick to bring back the fans’ hopes. The last ten minutes of the first half were characterized by dan-gerous tackles. The referee normalized the situation by flashing two yellow cards in quick succession.

Ndwamato Miriri of RO United and Victor Mawela of Stars were reprimanded for illegal tackles in the 39th and 44th minute respectively.

The coach of United demonstrat-ed his wisdom by introducing Victor Makhaukhau and Ndivhuwo Makhado for Asivhanzhi Muthubi and Victor Mawela earlier in the last half. Although it was difficult for them to find their way through the defence of Stars, United did not stop fighting.

They then replaced Awelani Nelushi with Rinae Madzhuta in a bid to strengthen their midfield. They took the lead in the 78th minute. Thivhulawi Silima forced his way through the defence of Stars and beat the keeper with a ground cutter. United played defensive football for the remain-ing part of the game in a bid to defend their leadership.

Goal fest at MadabaniThere was a feast of goals when Zoutpansberg Powerline and newcomers Muraleni United Brothers played to 4-4 draw in their MMK Insurance match at Madabani on Sunday.

Powerline squandered three obvious chances within the fi rst minutes. Jayson Maisha caused an upset when he dribbled past everyone and shot wide. Shortly afterwards, Vhutshilo Mafunisa hesitated for too long to unleash within the danger area of Brothers and he eventually lost possession. As if that was not good enough to stir up the team’s supporters, Dakalo Muhali committed a similar blunder moments thereafter.

Brothers were awarded a place kick in the 12th minute. Dakalo Tangananalo tried his luck from the set piece and the ball landed behind the net without any further touch. The celebrations of Brothers were cut short when the home team were awarded a penalty and Dakalo Mohale scored from the white spot.

Tsumbedzo Sekefa of the home team played rough against an opponent inside the penalty area and the referee, Mr Sonnyboy Netshiavha, pointed to the white spot. Muvhulawa Rambuda converted the penalty. The half-time score was 2-1 in favour of Brothers.

Early in the second half, Rendani ”Balo” Mathavha of Brothers increased the margin when he scored his team’s third goal. Powerline came back strongly in the last half. Rudzani Nebulu scored the second goal of his team, following a square pass from Tshifhiwa Netshisaulu.

Rendani Nembidzane of Brothers was cautioned with a card for a dangerous tackle. He tackled Dakalo Mohale off the ball and the referee was lenient enough to let him go with yellow. Mutshut-shu Mbodi replaced Duncan Maringa and his fi rst touch ended in a goal. Powerline scored two goals in quick succession late in the match when Rudzani Nebulu and Tshepo Ragima beat the keeper.

Azwitamisi Mphephu of Brothers (left) and Tshifhiwa Netshisaulu fi ght for the ball.
