Each month, the winner will be announced on Facebook. Always check the back of the newsletter and on the back of your community insert for living green tips.

Don’t forget to check the back of your District's Newsletter Insert for tree disposal information. If you miss the deadline for tree disposal in your community, visit www.earth911.com and search for nearby tree recycling facilities. Treecycling is an easy

way to return a renewable source back to the environment instead of disposing it in a landfill, where decomposition rates are slowed due to lack of oxygen.

Holiday Lighting Guidelines While you get ready to pull out your tinsel and toolbox, please remember the Lincoln guidelines for holiday décor. Holiday lights can be on display between the hours of 5:00 PM and 10:00 PM from now until the second week in January. After the approved time period for holiday décor has passed, all lighting should be removed and stored properly.

Please keep the following guidelines in mind when spreading holiday cheer with lights and decoration:

• To ensure everyone’s safety, please avoid overloading circuits and/or overusing extension cords. • Before you pull out the ladder, remember that decorations on the roof or above the first floor roofline are not allowed. • Lighting should be turned off when no one is home. • All lights and decorations need to avoid damage to the home. For example, nails/screws/tacks should not be used – please use gutter

clips or a similar clip device to affix exterior lighting. • You are welcome to decorate your front shrubbery but lawns need to remain clear for normal maintenance.

Lincoln and the Community Services Team wish you a very happy holiday season!

This Month’s Living Green TipsLiving Green During the Holidays

Making a difference this holiday season can include volunteering, donating to an organization, or helping out another military family. But don’t forget about the environment too!

Here are some tips to do your part throughout the holidays.

• Use real dishes and flatware, instead of serving food on paper or Styrofoam at holiday parties. If there aren’t enough to go around, use recycled paper products, recyclable and reusable plates. Inexpensive cloth napkins are also a great alternative and a bit fancier. Choose darker colors to help disguise stains. This can become a year round ritual saving you green while living green.

• Send an e-card with a photo of your family and a holiday wish, or an E-vite if you are hosting a party, instead of traditional greeting cards. You may also create a website with holiday wishes, news and images and email the link to friends and family.

• Reduce wrapping by making it part of the present. Put gifts in a basket, terra cotta garden pot, or reusable bag. Use ribbon to tie a bow on larger presents instead of wrapping the entire package. Americans throw away 25% more trash during the Thanksgiving to New Year’s holiday period than any other time of year.

• When going holiday shopping, remember to bring your reusable bags! Two million plastic bags are used each minute around the world, each taking at least 500 years to decompose.
