How to defend a castle

Page 17: literacy how a castle was defended

• The castle gate was made of heavy wood and metal to stop intruders from getting into the castle and so the door could not be burnt in a fire.

• In case the enemy got through the castle gate there was also a portcullis which would drop down and stop the intruders getting into the castle.

• Heavy rocks were thrown from above onto intruders in front of the gate.• The thick circular wall of the castle was very important for protection against

attacks.

• Behind the castle was a defensive corridor where knights would stand and protect the castle. The wall next to the defensive corridor had a parapet which is the special way the wall is designed.

• The keep was the highest part of the castle and knights could see intruders from the keep.

• Castles would be used to keep treasure because they were so huge, safe and strong.
