Leslie Banks had a privileged start to life in West Derby and must have consid- ered himself lucky to survive the carnage that claimed the lives of so many of his contemporaries. His injury was to have a particular bonus in his chosen career as an actor. It left one side of his face partially scarred and paralysed. If necessary, the scarring could be covered by make-up and publicity photo- graphs show few signs. When playing romantic or comic roles, Leslie could show the unmarked side of his face. He might reveal the damaged side, with its permanently-glar- ing eye, when play- ing dramatic roles or villains. Leslie played a number of criminal types in his success- ful stage and film career, notably as Count Zaroff in The Most Dangerous Game movie of 1932. He rarely gave interviews but was proud to say he was from West Derby. Leslie was born in 1890 to company agent George Banks and his wife Emily at 38 Russian Drive, Stoneycroft. George was suc- cessful and headed George Banks & Co, sole agent for Hannay’s Patent Composition. His office was at 9 Redcross Street, in the city centre. In 1891 the family moved to Holly Bank in Bankfield Road. I remember this ele- gant villa, demol- ished in the 1960s to make way for the college. By 1895 George was describing him- self as a merchant and in 1897 the fam- ily moved to The Coppice in Meols Drive, Hoylake. Leslie was a bright boy and, after attend- ing Glenalmond College in Scotland, went up to Oxford. He considered enter- ing the Church before settling on acting as a career. Leslie rose to the heights of his profes- sion and appeared alongside the great- est actors of the day, both in the theatre and on film. His screen appear- ances included star- ring roles in such classics as Alfred Hitchcock’s The Man Who Knew Too Much, Fire Over England, Jamaica Inn, Laurence Olivier’s Henry V and David Lean’s Madeleine. Perhaps his best- remembered part is as Sanders in Sanders of the River (1935) where he is pictured brandishing a pistol next to Paul Robeson. Father-of-three Leslie collapsed and died while taking a walk in 1952. GUNPOWDER,TREASON AND PLOT

By Stephen Guy

It was 1605 andall England wasagog with news ofthe plot to blowup Parliament,King James I andhis Lords andMPs.

Revenge was swiftand Guy Fawkes andhis fellow Catholicplotters were execut-ed in the most bar-baric manner – hung, drawn and quartered. This meant they werehanged and, while, still alive, choppedup and their headsand body parts dis-played on pikes as awarning to others.

All had activelyplanned the horrificdeaths of theProtestant king in anact of outrageous ter-rorism. It was onlythrough the vigilanceof the authorities thatFawkes was spottedbefore he could lightthe fuse to ignite thepile of gunpowder-filled barrels under

Westminster .This is why we

still celebrate thefoiling of the plot on5 November everyyear by burning andeffigy of GuyFawkes.

In 1605 the areathat is now south

Liverpool was verydifferent from today. It was still partlyancient forest thatwas gradually beingcleared to make wayfor farmland. TinyLiverpool ’s sevenstreets were dominat-ed by an ancient cas-tle.

A track ledthrough the treessouth to Speke Hall.Just one building issaid to have stood

along the way – andstill stands – theAncient Chapel ofToxteth.

Visitors to SpekeHall are always fas-cinated by thepriests’ hidingplaces. In 1605 theHall was occupied bya Catholic family, theNorrises. As follow-ers of the old faith, they had to pay finesfor not attendingChurch of England

services. These finesaccelerated the finan-cial decline of theNorris family.

Thomas Norrisinherited the Hall in1651 and was thefirst Protestant headof the family,However, he was aRoyalist and was onthe losing side in theCivil War when puri-tan Roundheads(Republicans) foughtCavalier dandies

(Royalists).The Norris estates

were confiscated andnot regained untilCharles II – theMerry Monarch –was restored to thethrone amid national

rejoicing after themiserable years ofthe Commonwealth(Republic) wheneven dancing wasbanned.

“FIGHTINGFIT”

by Paul Coshott

Hello, welcomeback to our‘Fighting Fit’campaign. Thismonth we aregoing to talkabout values. Thisis the second partto “motivation”,the first partbeing “beliefs”,which was lastmonth’s topic.

To value some-thing means to placeimportance upon it;anything you holddear can be called avalue. So when youand I make a deci-sion, what are someof the states andemotions that we aremoving towards?Maybe money, fulfil-ment and comfort….

When I have askeda client about thefeelings that are mostimportant for them intheir lives, they’llrespond with wordslike success, free-dom, intimacy, secu-rity, adventure, power, comfort andhealth. There aresome emotionalstates that you’ll domore to achieve thanothers so thereforeyou don’t value themequally.

Take a momentand make a list ofsome of the thingsyou value most.

What did you learnfrom doing this? Ifyour number one val-ues are passion, adventure and power,

I know you are goingto make differentdecisions than some-one whose top valuesare security , com-fort, intimacy andhealth. While youhave ‘movingtoward’ values, youalso have ‘movingaway’ from values.

How many of youhave ever done pub-lic speaking? I knowthe first time I did apresentation in frontof a group of busi-ness leaders, I wasquite nervous butthere are many peo-ple out there whowon’t dare to do anykind of public speak-ing. Maybe they havea fear of failure, rejection or humilia-tion. As well as thesethree emotions, thereare others; rejection, anger, frustration, loneliness, depres-sion, failure, humili-ation, guilt, con-frontation etc.

Take a momentnow and make a listof some of the emo-tions you like toavoid. What does thistell you?

Now that you havemade a list of your‘moving toward’ and‘moving away’ val-ues, does this giveyou an idea of whyyou do what you do?For example, if yournumber one ‘movingtoward’ value isadventure and yournumber one ‘movingaway’ value is fear, you may think twiceabout doing a bungeejump, depending onthe kind of fear youhave.

E X E R C I S E :Think about the goalyou want to achieve .Write down the val-ues you need to havein order to achievethis goal. Once youhave made a list, carry it around withyou and take a lookbefore you make anydecisions withregards to your goal.

Dorothy loved summer nightswhen she would climb the circu-lar staircase to the top of thehigh tower.

While the rest of the house slept, shewould tiptoe out of the bedroom and fumbleher way to the tiny door on the top landingof the ancient house.

STRANGE TALES

THEVEIL

by Anton Valdemart

Lane, the unmaderoad gated to keeplivestock from wan-dering.

It was 1927 andcars had troublenegotiating the lane.It made the isolationeven more intense.

Dorothy stoodlike a statue on theroof. There was acool breeze waftingup from the valley. She was flushedfrom her exertionsand delighted in thesensual feel of thegentle wind on hernaked arms andlegs.

An owl flewabove, passingbefore the full moonlike a swoopingghost. The distantbark of a fox brieflybroke the silence.

Dorothy revelledin the bliss of themoment – she feltso alive, everysinew of her lithebody tingling withpleasurable sensa-tions. She openedher eyes wide toabsorb what shecalled her NightKingdom.

Suddenly she feltsomething was

missing and thissensation grew asshe carefullyclimbed down thestairs to rejoin herunconscious sistersin the huge commu-nal bedroom.

The 19-year-oldlay awake, sleepevading her. Thefollowing day shewas strangely silentand over the nextweek was unable tomake any nocturnalvisits to the towerbecause of poorweather.

Dorothy, whilehelping her mothersort out the contentsof one of the unusedrooms, found abeautiful veilspread out in atrunk. It had beenworn by her deeplyunpleasant grand-mother when shemarried all thoseyears ago inChildwall Church.

Dorothy furtivelyrolled up the veiland hid it away. Shewas fascinated bythe fine, transparentsilk as soft as gos-samer.

It felt like a softbreeze as she ran it

through her fingers. That night she heldthe veil in her trem-bling hand as sheclimbed the stairs.

She must wear it,feel its soft caresson her face in themoonlit breeze. Atlast Dorothy stoodquivering in herfavourite place andslowly – nervously– put on the veil.

At first the sensa-tion was intoxicat-ing, like a hundredtiny hands strokingher hot face. Thiswas the greatest-ever feeling ofu n t r a m m e l l e d ,unconfined joy.

Then all changed.A horrible toothlesshag was staring ather through the veil, her deep-set eyesblazing.

“Take it off!” thecrone screamed.

Dorothy neverreturned to thetower.

Sutton Kersh Lettings isurging landlords andtenants to only deal withagents who are membersof the Association ofResidential LettingAgents (ARLA).

With difficult borrowingconditions and the subduedeconomic climate still affect-ing the traditional residentialsales market, the demand forrental properties is on theincrease, as is the number ofpeople looking to benefitfrom the boom.

Leah O`Neill BranchManager at Sutton KershWest Derby office said: ‘Justas you would never considerusing an unlicensed doctor or

dentist, the same principlemust apply to the lettingsmarket. It is vital to checkthat your agent is ARLA reg-istered.’

ARLA registered agentsare bound by a set of strictindustry standards which areaimed at giving security andpeace of mind in equal meas-ure.

This includes being cov-ered by a Client MoneyProtection (CMP) scheme fortenancy deposits and rents. If tenants deposits are notregistered in one of theapproved schemes then land-lords are at risk of not beingable to recover the cost ofdamages from the deposit. Inthe event of a dispute

between a landlord and ten-ant over repairs then the mat-ter can be referred for adjudi-cation if the deposit has beencorrectly registered.

Leah added: ‘By beingmembers of ARLA we followa strict code of practice andrules of conduct. We are alsorequired to carry out continu-ous professional develop-ment to ensure we are alwaysoffering best possible adviceand aware of the latest legis-lation.’

Sutton Kersh currently hasa large number of tenantslooking for rentable accom-modation in West Derby andis asking landlords to makecontact as soon as possible on0151 256 7837.

the twelfth minute when Adam, the youngestof the Baker boys, broke into the Hale box andhit a sweet right-footed drive just inside theleft-hand post to open the scoring. Six minuteslater he was involved in an altercation with aHale player which saw both of them go intothe referee’s notebook and soon after thatsloppy defensive work let Hale through tolevel the scores.

The score-line remained the same until justbefore half-time when the Hale goalkeeperfelled the Stoneycroft attacker, who was aboutto round him, to concede a penalty and earnhimself a yellow card. Mike Kinney nettedfrom the ensuing penalty kick to put his sidein front going into the break.

Ten minutes into the second half AdamBeckett hit a superb twenty yard drive into theroof of the Hale net to make it three for thehome side. Fifteen minutes later Mick Gough, making his debut for the Croft, latched on to aloose pass to break through and coolly side-foot the ball past the advancing goalkeeper tomake it four. The visitors were trying hard toget back into the game but they were now upagainst a determined home side who had thebit between their teeth and were playing withconfidence, settling in to their passing gamewith some attractive moves with direction andpurpose. It was after one such move that MikeKinney added to his tally.

Hale did pull one back almost straight fromthe restart to make it 5-2 but it was to proveStoneycroft’s day as they added a sixth fol-lowing a brilliant exchange of passes that hadthe Hale defenders mesmerised; that manKinney popped up again to smash a perfectlyhit low cross sweetly into the bulging net andsend his team into the second round.
