Thisprojectstartedwithaseriesoftypographyexercisesinhierarchyusingvarioustechniquessuchaslinespacing,letterspacing,charactersize,etc.Fromthere,Icreatedanumberofquickdigitalsketchesoftheposterusingdifferentselfgeneratedimages.Theonethatisshownbelowwiththeknifewasthemostinteresting,butitseemedtoneedtointeractwiththetypemore.Additionally,Iwantedtoshowtheactofcuttingsomehow.Tovisuallyrepresentthethemeoftypeoftheedge,Isettledontheideatocutupthetitleoftheconventionfromawatermelon.Letmetellyou,it’snoteasytofindawatermeloninMarch.Butithasgreatcolorsandafruitseemedlikethebestitemtocutlettersfromasithasenoughstructuretoholdtheforms,butit’snotexceedinglyhardtocut,soIwenttoaboutfivegrocerystoresintheBaltimoreareabeforefindingone.AndI’mgladIdidbecauseIcan’timaginehavingasgreataneffectwithanythingelse.

Ilovetoknitandsewandgenerallyworkwithfibers,soIjumpedattheopportunitytoincorporateitwithmydesignwork.Forthisproject,Idesignedthepatternforapairoffingerlessglovesthataremeanttobewornwhileenjoyingafavoritehotbeverage.Thetextonthebackreads“Wheneveryoutakeabreaktoenjoyyourcoffeeortea,CoffeeCoziesfingerlessglovesarethereforyou.Thetexturedpalmhelpskeepyourgripwhilethedelicatecablepatternaddsstyletoyoursips.Keepapairaroundandstaycozy!”

Topackagethegloves,Itookactualcoffeecozies(ThanksStarbucks!)andsandedoffalloftheprintedcopy.Ithenusedwintergreenoiltotransferxeroxprintsofthetexttothecardboard.Soyourcoffeecoziesarelovinglywrappedinacoffeecozy.

PandoricaTheatreCoAnimated LogoPandoricaTheatreCoisnamedafterPandora’sbox,sothelogobecameasquarewithtwocirclesinthecenterbasedoffaparticualrillustrationofthemyth.Ianimatedtheboxrotatingtotheside,openingupandthenturningback,withthewordsexitingfromtheopeningbeforeclosingup.Thisanimationwouldbeusedeitheronatvspotoronthewebsiteasanintroorloader.

AuthoredBranding and IdentityThisbrandingisforanewrestaurantnames“Authored.”Thegoalofthisrestaurantistogivewritersofanysortasafehaventocontinuewritingwhileenjoyingamealandanewsetting.Theinteriorwillbesimilartoalibrarywithbookseverywhereandaquiteatmospheretohelpwritersretainconcentration.Plentyofdictionariesandthesaurusesavailableaswellasoutletsbyeachtableforthosewholikewriteontheirlaptops.Thetargetaudienceispeoplewhocomebythemselvestowriteandmaybeinsmallgroups,butsocializationisnotreallythegoal.Itisnotlimitedtoestablishedorsuperseriouswriters,itisavailabletoanyonewhowouldliketoscribewhileenjoyingasteak(orsaladifheorsheisavegetarian).However,thereistheassumptionofeducationandsophisticationthatcomesalongwiththepracticeofwritingandsothebrandwillreflectthis.

Biscuit’sBilingualGameInteractiveFlashGameThiseducationalgameismeanttobegintoteachchildrencolorsinanotherlanguage.Intheory,thiswouldbeasmallpartofamuchlargergamethatwouldcontaindifferentchallengesandvocabularyandcouldevencomeinmultiplelanguages.Thegamebeginswithapagefullofcoloredbones.Whentheuserrollstheirmouseoveroneofthem,thenameofthecolorinenglishandspanishappearsinthetopleftcorner.Toplay,theuserwoulddragacoloredboneanddropitontoBiscuit,thecorgi.Iftheychooseincorrectly,aprompttotryagainappears.OncetheygiveBiscuitthecorrectbone,Biscuitbarksandtheyarepraisedandmoveontothenextcolor.Thereareatotaloftenquestionsandastheplayeradvances,moreoptionsappear.

MymostlistenedtogenresofmusicareBroadwaymusicalsandmetal.It’sastrangecombinationandsoIdecidedtomakeabookusingtransfermethodstoillustratethis.IrealizedthatbothMetallicaandAChorusLinehaveasongtitledoneandIthoughaboutwhatitmightbelikeifMetallicaperformedtheChorusLineversion.Fromthere,Ireachedtheideaofplacingmetalstar’sheadsontothebodiesofclassicBroadwaycharacters.IncludedinthebookisOzzyOsbourneinAnnie,AliceCooperintheSoundofMusic,MetallicainAChorusLine,andNightwishinPhantomoftheOpera.Tomakethebook,Iusedwintergreenoilandtransfermarkerstotransfertheimagesandcollagesontorivesbfkpaperonanaccordionfold.Ithenpaintedselectareaswithgoldusingagoldinkpen.

RecalculateDrunkDrivingBusWrapThiscampaignseekstoenddrunkdrivingbyshowingwhathappenstoone’sjudgment,or“navigationsystem,”andtheconsequenceswhentheydrivedrunk.Intheadvertisement,theimageisframedbyacardashboardatthebottomandthewindshieldaboveitiscracked.Thenavigationsystemistellingthedriverto“DriveDrunkIntoCar”whichsuggeststhatbyfollowingthenavigationsystem,thedriverisnowinacrash.Thetextplaysoffofthelanguageusedinmostnavigationsystemsandisimperative,demandingthattheviewerrethinkstheirdecision.Theadisexecutedonthebackofthebusasawaytoillustratetheeffectofthedrunkdrivercrashingintothebus.Theimagesalongthebottomarefrommyprocess;frominspirationtoroughdraft.

ClearChannelOutdoorOutdoorAdvertisingDuringthesummerof2010,IworkedasagraphicdesigninternatClearChannelOutdoor’sMD/DCareaoffice.Iworkedonspecartandmockupsformanycompanies.Thesefourwereafewoftheonesthatwereorderedandprinted.Theywereallpremierpanelswhichareroughlyhalfthewidthofafullbulletinbillboard.ThebottomthreewereallpostedincountiessurroundingBaltimore.KevinParsonoriginallyonlywantedonepanelbutendedupactuallyorderingtwopanelsthatwerebothpostedincityofBaltimore.Hewaselected,bytheway.
