RATIONALE

From June 24th to 28th 2019, Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital will host in Rome the 5th International Conference of Esophageal Atresia (INoEA) - in collaboration with the European support group for the Esophageal Atresia (EAT) and the Italian Asso-ciation of Families with Esophageal Atresia (FATE)- and the 2nd Meeting of the Inter-national Network of Pediatric Airways Team (INPAT), organized together with the Airway Team of Gaslini Institute of Genoa.

It promises to be a memorable weeklong event in Rome – held in the year that marks the 150th anniversary of the Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital.

This will be the first international joint session of INoEA and INPAT and it will bring together professionals specialized in the treatment and management of complex and fragile patients affected by Esophageal Atresia/Tracheo-esophageal fistula and other aerodigestive tract anomalies.

The INPAT meeting will start on 26th, on 27th June INoEA and INPAT will come to-gether in one place to discuss the latest scientific and medical research in their fields. On 28th INoEA will conclude its meeting and the esophageal atresia week.

On 24th and 25th June there will be a Workshop that will offer practical live training sessions on endoscopic, surgical and minimally invasive procedures. Participants will be involved in hands-on practical activities, simulation boxes, demonstrations of rehabilitation strategies and techniques for both medical teams and families. There will be activities dedicated to children born with Esophageal Atresia/Tracheo-e-sophageal fistula, aimed at addressing some of their most persistent eating difficul-ties. It’s Rome, so food will be involved!

These patients require dedicated multi-disciplinary teams, working in close collabo-ration with various specialists, families, nurses and other health care providers. In this spirit, the workshops will offer a unique opportunity to meet the leading specia-lists in the world, to discuss and share ideas on how best to tackle some of the most controversial and pressing issues of pediatric surgery. Young and adult patients, as well as their parents and caretakers, will actively participate in the workshop, brin-ging their own experiences, the results of recent studies and will pose questions on the most challenging issues related to the quality of life of patients, while learning about state-of-the-art surgical and rehabilitation techniques.

Rome is the Eternal City where legend has it a she-wolf nourished to good health the city’s most famously fragile twins, Romolo and Remo. In a myth that Romans are fond of retelling, the twins later grew up to found this wondrous city. What’s true today is this: together, we can improve the lives of those born with these rare diseases by developing and sharing best-practice. We look forward to seeing you in Romolo and Remo’s city where we can make important new contributions to this goal.
